Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf someone opened an account in your name, contact the company’s fraud department immediately, ask it to close or freeze the account, and change any affected passwords, logins, and PINs. Then place a free fraud alert or credit freeze, check all three credit reports, report the identity theft at IdentityTheft.gov, and document every step. The process below is for U.S. consumers and applies whether you discovered a credit card, loan, utility, phone, bank, or other account you did not open.
1. Contact the company and stop further activity
Use a statement, the company’s official website, or another verified directory to find the business’s customer-service number. Do not use a phone number or link in a suspicious email or text that claims to be from the company. Ask to be transferred to the fraud or identity-theft department.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
What to tell the fraud department
State clearly that the account was opened using your identity without your permission and that you did not authorize any purchases, withdrawals, applications, or other activity. Ask the representative to close or freeze the account so additional charges cannot be added while the investigation is pending. If the account cannot be closed immediately, ask what restriction prevents new activity and how to prevent further transactions.
Write down the date and time, the representative’s name or identification number, the case or reference number, and the exact action the company agrees to take. Keep statements, emails, letters, screenshots, and copies of anything you send.

Secure related accounts
Change passwords, usernames, security questions, and PINs for the affected account and for any other account that reused the same credentials. Use a new, unique password for each service. If an email account or mobile-phone account may have been involved, secure those first because an intruder could use them to reset other passwords. Review recent activity for transactions or contact-information changes you do not recognize.
2. Add a fraud alert or freeze to your credit files
A fraud alert and a credit freeze are different protections. Both are free under federal consumer guidance, but they work differently and have different setup requirements.
| Protection | What it does | How to place it | How long it lasts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Initial fraud alert | Asks businesses to verify your identity before granting new credit. It does not block access to your credit report. | Contact any one of Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion. That bureau must notify the other two. | One year; it can be renewed. |
| Extended fraud alert | Provides a longer identity-verification warning for people who have experienced identity theft. | Request it after obtaining an FTC Identity Theft Report or a qualifying police report, following the bureau’s instructions. | Seven years, according to FTC guidance. |
| Credit freeze | Restricts access to your credit report for most new-credit decisions. It does not change your credit score. | Contact all three nationwide credit bureaus separately. | Until you lift it. You can temporarily lift it when a lender or other permitted party needs access. |
When an initial fraud alert is enough
An initial alert is a quick first step when you want lenders to take extra verification measures but still need ordinary access to your reports. Because one bureau passes the request to the other two, you make the request only once. The alert does not guarantee that a fraudulent application will be rejected, and it does not prevent a business from accessing your report.
When to use a credit freeze
A freeze is stronger when you do not expect to apply for new credit soon or when you suspect that someone has enough personal information to keep applying. You must place the freeze with each bureau. When you legitimately apply for credit, ask the lender which bureau it will use and lift the freeze temporarily or provide the required access before the application is reviewed. Replace the freeze afterward if you still want the restriction.

3. Check your credit reports and make an evidence list
Obtain your reports from all three nationwide bureaus and read every section, not only the list of open accounts. Look for unfamiliar credit inquiries, collection accounts, addresses, employers, names, phone numbers, and account balances. An identity thief may have changed contact information or made applications that have not yet produced a new account.
Create one running record for each suspicious item. Include the creditor or collector, account number (masking most digits in your personal notes), date opened, balance, dates of transactions, bureau where it appears, and the date you disputed or reported it. Keep a separate log of every call, letter, upload, confirmation number, and promised follow-up. Store copies in a secure location, because you may need the same facts for the company, credit bureaus, law enforcement, or a debt collector.
4. Report the identity theft at IdentityTheft.gov
Use IdentityTheft.gov to report what happened. The answers you provide generate an FTC Identity Theft Report and a personalized recovery plan. Be precise about which account you did not open, when you discovered it, what transactions you recognize or reject, and which companies or bureaus you have already contacted.

The company may request the FTC report or its own identity-theft form before it investigates or blocks information. 5. Follow up with the company in writing
After you have the FTC Identity Theft Report, contact the company’s fraud department again using the case number from your first call. Ask for written confirmation of three points:
- The account is not yours and was opened without your authorization.
- You are not liable for the fraudulent balance or transactions.
- The company has removed its information from your credit reports, or has submitted the appropriate request to the bureaus.
Ask whether the business requires its own dispute form, a copy of your report, identification documents, or an affidavit. Send only the documents requested through a verified channel and keep a copy of everything. Request information about how the account was opened. For a fraudulent credit-card account, IdentityTheft.gov gives the example of requesting the application and the applicant’s signature. The business may limit what it can disclose, but asking can reveal which address, phone number, or identifying information was used.
If the company says you must pay
Do not pay a debt merely because a company or collector says it belongs to you. Tell the caller or writer that the account resulted from identity theft, ask for the dispute procedure, and provide the FTC Identity Theft Report or other requested documentation. Keep the dispute and all supporting records. Paying can complicate your position and does not substitute for having the fraudulent account investigated and corrected.
6. Dispute fraudulent information with the credit bureaus
Dispute every fraudulent account, inquiry, collection entry, address, and other inaccurate item with each bureau that reports it. Follow the bureau’s current instructions and identify the information as the result of identity theft. Include copies, not originals, of your FTC Identity Theft Report and relevant company correspondence when requested.

Ask the bureau to block or remove information that resulted from identity theft. Track the date each dispute was submitted, the documents included, the confirmation number, and the response. If an item remains, read the explanation, correct any missing information, and submit a follow-up dispute with the company’s written confirmation or other new evidence. Continue monitoring all three reports for accounts that appear later.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Handle other types of identity theft through the right branch
A fraudulent financial account is only one form of identity theft. IdentityTheft.gov provides separate recovery steps for systems that use different records and agencies.
- Tax identity theft: Follow the tax-specific instructions if someone used your information on a tax return or to obtain a tax refund.
- Medical identity theft: Contact the provider, insurer, and medical-record department if services, diagnoses, or bills appear under your name.
- Child identity theft: Check whether a child’s Social Security number was used for credit or employment and follow the child-specific process.
- Benefits identity theft: Contact the agency administering the affected benefit if an application or payment was made in your name.
- Government-ID misuse: Report misuse of a driver’s license, passport, or other government identification to the issuing agency.
The general account-and-credit sequence may not resolve these records, so use the specialized steps for the system involved.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Ask the caller or letter writer for the company name, mailing address, account number, and the process for disputing an account opened through identity theft. Do not confirm that the debt is yours or provide additional personal information until you independently verify the business through an official source. Submit the dispute in the format requested, attach the relevant report if required, and retain proof of delivery.

If the account reappears after the original company said it was removed, compare the account number, creditor name, and reporting date. Report the new occurrence to the company and the bureaus rather than assuming it is the same record. Update your contact log so you can show the sequence of events.
9. Keep monitoring after the first correction
Review your reports and account statements regularly after the fraudulent account is closed. Watch for new inquiries, unfamiliar addresses, collection notices, password-reset messages, and small “test” transactions. Keep a freeze in place if you do not need new credit, or renew the initial fraud alert when it expires. If you use a freeze, remember that legitimate applications may require a temporary lift.
Optional monitoring and recovery services
Paid identity-monitoring or recovery services are optional. Some recovery services may help prepare letters or manage follow-up tasks, but they do not replace contacting the company, placing bureau protections, disputing inaccurate information, or reporting at IdentityTheft.gov. The FTC also notes that identity-theft insurance generally does not reimburse money stolen by scammers, so read any policy’s exclusions before paying for it.

10. Prevent a second incident
Shred papers that contain personal or financial information before disposal, as the FTC advises. Secure mail, limit the personal details you post publicly, and use multifactor authentication where available. These precautions reduce exposure but cannot repair an account that was already opened; complete the recovery steps above first.
When to seek additional help
Consider contacting a lawyer or an appropriate government agency if a company continues to bill you after you supplied identity-theft documentation, a collector threatens legal action over a disputed fraudulent account, your government benefits or tax filing are affected, or the theft involves an ongoing safety risk. This guide is general U.S. consumer information, not individualized legal advice.
