If online harassment or doxxing follows a public controversy, put physical safety first, preserve what you can without delaying help, report the material to the platform, and contact local authorities when there is a credible threat or suspected crime. Then tighten account and privacy settings. The correct regulator, police process and legal definition depend on where you are; no route guarantees removal or a particular outcome.
What do I do if I’m being doxxed?
Doxxing means publishing someone’s personal information online without consent. Police Scotland describes it as “when someone shares your information online without your consent.” Exposed material can include an address, telephone number, workplace, family details or other information that makes a person identifiable. A large pile-on after a controversy can feel chaotic, but work through the steps below in order.

- Get to safety if a post gives your location, threatens violence or suggests someone is coming to find you.
- Make a short incident record when it is safe, saving links, screenshots, dates, times and account details.
- Report the content through the platform’s current privacy, harassment, threat or impersonation process.
- Escalate credible threats, stalking or suspected crime to local police and seek victim-support or counselling services.
- Reduce further exposure by reviewing privacy, authentication and contact settings.
You do not need a perfect evidence file before asking for help. Police.uk states: “You don’t need to collect ‘evidence’ before you report stalking or harassment to us.”

Step 1: Check immediate physical safety
A specific threat, an exposed home or workplace location, a threat to come to you, or a pattern of escalating contact changes the order of action. Leave the exposed location or move somewhere safer if you can do so without increasing risk. Tell a trusted person what is happening and avoid posting your current whereabouts.

Call the emergency service for your location
Contact local emergency services or police when you face immediate danger. Australia’s eSafety Commissioner gives the instruction: “If you are at risk of immediate harm, call emergency services on Triple Zero (000).” Triple Zero (000) is Australia-specific; use the emergency number for your own country elsewhere. Do not wait for a platform moderator to respond to a violent threat.
Do not amplify the exposed information
When asking for help publicly, describe the problem without repeating an address, phone number, travel plan or other private detail. Ask a trusted person to monitor incoming messages or make reports if reading the material is overwhelming. A helper can reduce the amount of time you spend viewing abusive content, but urgent safety decisions should still go to emergency services or police.
Step 2: Preserve a manageable incident record
Once you are safe, capture enough information for a platform, police officer or regulator to understand what happened. Useful records include:

- a screenshot showing the content, account name and surrounding context;
- the date and time it appeared, including your time zone when relevant;
- the platform, website or messaging service;
- the username, display name, telephone number or other sender details shown;
- what was said, threatened or disclosed; and
- any report number or confirmation received from the platform.
Police Scotland advises recording what was said or sent, the platform, when it appeared and the sender’s name or contact details if known. Singapore’s Online Safety Commission asks for links or screenshots with posting dates and times and copies of reports made to platforms.

Save before requesting removal when practical
Removal can destroy the easiest copy of a post. Singapore’s Online Safety Commission warns: “As reporting to the OSC may lead to the harmful content being removed, please save the evidence if you plan to also report to the Police or take legal action.” Save the material first when doing so is safe and does not delay an emergency report.
Keep the record secure
Store copies in a location that the harasser cannot alter, such as a secure account or an offline copy. Do not send intimate or highly sensitive material widely just to create backups. If a threat is active, stop collecting and report it; evidence gathering is not a condition of receiving police assistance.
Step 3: Report the material to the hosting platform
Use the service’s current in-product reporting route. Choose the category that most closely fits the conduct: doxxing or privacy violation, harassment, threat, impersonation, or exposure of personal information. Platform menus change, so follow the labels currently shown rather than an old screenshot or third-party guide.

- Open the post, message, profile or page that contains the material.
- Select the platform’s report, safety or privacy option.
- Describe the specific information disclosed and explain why it creates a safety risk.
- Attach the saved link or screenshot if the form allows it.
- Save the confirmation, case number or email response.
Reporting may lead to content being hidden or removed, but official guidance does not promise removal, account identification or a response within a particular time. If police or legal action may follow, preserve the original evidence before submitting a removal request whenever practical.

Blocking and limiting contact
Block unwanted accounts when doing so helps you feel safer. Police Scotland and eSafety support blocking as a way to limit contact. Blocking is optional, may not stop coordinated or newly created accounts, and does not erase copies already saved or reposted elsewhere. Preserve the relevant record before blocking if you may need to show the account’s conduct.
Step 4: Decide when to contact police, a regulator or a support service
Use the route that matches the urgency and purpose of your problem. Police handle threats, stalking and suspected offences; platforms handle content and account moderation; regulators may have limited intervention powers; support services help with safety planning and wellbeing.

Scotland and the wider UK
Police Scotland’s doxxing and online-harassment guidance covers recording the material, reporting it to the platform and contacting police. Its channels and definitions should not be assumed to apply in another country. Police.uk’s stalking and harassment guidance confirms that you can report without first collecting evidence.

Singapore
The Online Safety Commission describes platform, police and regulator routes for doxxing. Its intervention has eligibility conditions, so a report is not automatically within the Commission’s remit. Save links, screenshots, posting dates and times, and copies of platform reports before seeking intervention when possible.
Maryland and other US states
The Maryland Attorney General’s 2026 announcement describes state guidance on evidence preservation, safety assessment, reporting and legal protections. It is Maryland-specific and does not establish the criminal or civil law of another state or country. In the United States, contact the police agency with jurisdiction over the threat or incident and ask a local victim-support or legal service which state and federal options may apply.
When a specialised alert does not fit
An FBI 2025 alert about retaining identifiers and material concerns suspected violent-network crime in a specialised context. Do not treat that alert as a universal procedure for every harassment incident. For ordinary doxxing or online harassment, follow your local police and platform reporting instructions.
Step 5: Reduce additional exposure
After urgent reports are made, review each account that may reveal your identity or location. These measures reduce exposure but cannot guarantee that copied information will disappear.

- Remove public addresses, personal telephone numbers, private email addresses, routine locations and family details where they are not needed.
- Enable two-factor authentication or another secure authentication method wherever available.
- Use a unique, strong password for each important account and review active sessions or logged-in devices.
- Check recovery email addresses and telephone numbers so a harasser cannot use exposed information to reset an account.
- Limit who can send messages, tag you, add you to groups or search for you by telephone number.
- Block or mute abusive accounts when appropriate, while retaining evidence needed for a report.
If exposed information includes details connected to financial or other high-consequence accounts, prioritize those accounts in your security review and contact the relevant institution through its official channel rather than replying to an unsolicited message. Do not share verification codes with anyone contacting you about the incident.
What should I do if I’m being harassed online after a controversy?
A public controversy can produce a sudden, high-volume pile-on, but there is no special universal response protocol for controversy-driven harassment. Treat each threat, disclosure or impersonation as a separate incident where useful, and keep the response measured.
Choose whether to make a public statement
You are not required to answer publicly. A statement may be useful for correcting a dangerous falsehood, but responding can also draw more attention to the abusive thread. Do not assume that ignoring the abuse, deleting an account or arguing with harassers will stop it. Make the choice based on safety, work or family considerations, and advice from people you trust.
Use one controlled communication channel
Ask a trusted helper to collect links and sort urgent threats from general abuse. Keep your own public message free of the exposed personal details. If the volume becomes unmanageable, pause notifications while preserving access to emergency messages and platform confirmations.
Common mistakes that can make the situation worse
- Waiting for a perfect evidence file: report promptly; partial information is better than delaying a threat report.
- Reposting the private data to warn others: describe it without reproducing the address, number or document.
- Deleting everything before saving it: preserve a link or screenshot first when safe and practical.
- Assuming one country’s regulator applies everywhere: verify your local eligibility and covered services.
- Expecting guaranteed takedown: platforms and authorities make their own decisions under local rules.
- Relying only on blocking: coordinated accounts can reappear, so combine blocking with reporting and security changes.
What outcomes can you realistically expect?
Authorities and platforms may remove material, restrict an account, investigate a threat or provide support, but none of the cited guidance guarantees a result. Definitions of harassment, stalking, doxxing and criminal threats differ by location. Eligibility for a regulator, the evidence requested and the time taken to respond also differ. Keep your records, follow up using the reference number you receive, and seek local legal advice if you need an assessment of a specific claim or remedy.
