If one stock now makes up more of your portfolio than your plan allows, first measure the position against your goals, time horizon, financial needs and ability to tolerate a sharp fall. Then choose among three legitimate responses: sell part of the holding, direct new contributions to underweighted investments, or combine both. The right action depends on your tax lots, account type, trading costs and intended asset allocation—not on a universal percentage that applies to everyone.
Why a single oversized holding changes your risk
Owning one company can produce a very different outcome from owning a broad mix of companies, bonds and other assets. Company-specific events—an earnings miss, product failure, lawsuit, regulatory action or management change—can damage one stock even when the wider market is stable. As the stock becomes a larger share of your total assets, that single-company outcome has more influence on your ability to fund near-term spending and long-term goals.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) defines diversification as “the practice of spreading money among different investments to reduce risk.” Diversification does not eliminate losses, but it can reduce the effect of one security’s problems on the whole portfolio. Your concentration should therefore be judged in the context of all accounts and assets you own, not just the brokerage account where you noticed the change.
Include taxable accounts, retirement plans, cash, employer stock, concentrated funds and any other investments that provide exposure to the same company or industry. A fund labeled diversified is not automatically broad: SEC guidance warns that a mutual fund or exchange-traded fund can be narrowly focused, such as on one sector, and therefore fail to provide the diversification you expect.

Start with your intended allocation, not a headline percentage
Calculate the holding’s current share
- List the market value of the stock in every account, including shares held through an employer plan or an employee stock program.
- Add the market value of your other investments and cash to determine the portfolio total you are using for the decision.
- Divide the stock’s total value by that portfolio total. Repeat the calculation for any related exposure, such as a sector fund that owns the same company.
- Record the result and the date, because market prices can move the percentage substantially without any trade.
A rising price can make a position overweight even if you never bought additional shares. Conversely, a price decline can reduce its percentage while leaving you with the same number of shares and the same company-specific risk. Measure the actual allocation before deciding how much, if anything, to change.
Define what “too large” means for you
There is no single-stock percentage established by the official guidance that is suitable for every investor. A useful limit is the largest loss you could withstand without jeopardizing essential spending, an emergency reserve, debt payments or a major goal. Consider:
- Goal and time horizon: Money needed soon generally has less capacity for a large, volatile equity position than money earmarked for a distant goal.
- Risk tolerance and risk capacity: Your willingness to see a large drawdown is different from your financial ability to absorb one. Use the more restrictive of the two.
- Income and employment links: If your salary, bonus or future job prospects depend on the same company or industry, your economic exposure is larger than your brokerage percentage suggests.
- Liquidity needs: A planned home purchase, tuition bill or tax payment can make an otherwise tolerable concentration impractical.
- Rest of the portfolio: A concentrated stock combined with a concentrated sector fund may create more overlap than the account statements reveal.
Write down a target allocation and an acceptable range before acting. That turns a market-driven reaction into a repeatable plan.

Rebalancing means restoring a portfolio to its intended mix after market movements or contributions have pushed it away from that mix. The SEC cautions against changing an allocation merely because an asset category recently performed well. The objective is to return to the risk level you selected, not to predict which asset will rise next.

For example, an SEC illustration says an investor might decide stocks should be 60% of a portfolio, then see stocks reach 80% after a market increase. The example says the investor could sell some stock investments or buy investments from an underweighted category to restore the mix. Those figures illustrate the mechanics of rebalancing; they are not a recommended target and do not establish a limit for one company.
Compare the three ways to reduce concentration
| Approach | What it does | Advantages | Trade-offs and checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sell some shares | Reduces the oversized position immediately and moves the proceeds to the assets in your plan. | Fastest reduction in company-specific risk; can bring the allocation back to its target in one transaction or a small number of transactions. | May realize a gain or loss; review basis, holding period, federal and state tax rules, commissions or spreads, and any account restrictions. |
| Direct new contributions elsewhere | Leaves the existing shares in place while new savings buy underweighted assets. | Can avoid an immediate taxable sale in a taxable account and may be simple to automate. | The stock can remain a large exposure for a long time, especially if contributions are small or the stock continues to rise. |
| Combine gradual sales with redirected contributions | Uses both a controlled reduction and future savings to close the allocation gap. | Can balance speed, taxes and cash-flow constraints. | The pace and amount must fit your target allocation, tax lots, trading costs and personal circumstances; official guidance does not prescribe a schedule. |
None of these approaches is universally best. Compare the reduction in risk, the tax cost, transaction expenses and the time required to reach your intended mix. A financial professional can model the alternatives when the holding is large, the tax basis is complicated or the stock is tied to your employment.
If you sell, prepare the tax and execution details first
Inventory your lots and basis
For U.S. federal tax purposes, securities sales generally produce capital gains or losses reported on Schedule D and Form 8949 when required. Your gain or loss depends on proceeds minus the basis of the shares sold, so gather the purchase date, number of shares, cost basis and any adjustments for each lot. The holding period affects whether a gain or loss is treated as short-term or long-term under the applicable rules.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen selling, identify the specific shares or lots in the manner your broker accepts and retain the confirmation. IRS instructions state that investors generally should identify the specific shares sold; if the shares cannot be adequately identified, FIFO (first in, first out) generally determines which shares are treated as sold, subject to exceptions. Choosing lots deliberately can change the realized gain and the remaining basis in the account.

Estimate the full cost of the trade
- Estimate the taxable gain or loss for each lot, rather than applying one average percentage to the entire position.
- Check whether selling now would move income into a different federal or state tax bracket or affect a tax credit, surtax or other income-based item.
- Include commissions, bid-ask spreads, fund expenses on replacement investments and any account transfer or plan fees.
- Verify settlement, trading-window and blackout restrictions if the shares came from an employer or insider program.
Tax treatment varies by account type and jurisdiction. Confirm current federal and state rules with a qualified tax adviser before placing a large order; do not assume that a result from one account applies to another.
Know the wash-sale issue when selling at a loss
If you sell shares for a loss and acquire substantially identical securities during the period covered by the wash-sale rule, the loss may be disallowed or deferred. IRS guidance describes a window beginning 30 days before and ending 30 days after the loss sale for certain acquisitions. The rules can include transactions in an IRA and other specified circumstances. Review purchases in all relevant accounts, including automatic reinvestments, before selling and during the window. Ask a tax adviser how the rule applies to your exact security and account combination.
A practical decision process
1. Set a risk-based target and a review band
Choose the allocation you want and a range that triggers review. A band keeps you from trading every day a price moves while still requiring action when the position materially exceeds your plan. Document why the target fits your goals and when you will reassess it.

2. Map every source of exposure
Combine direct shares, options, restricted stock, employee purchase-plan shares and funds with meaningful exposure to the company or sector. Add the economic value of related employment income when judging how much downside your household could absorb.

3. Separate taxable and tax-sheltered choices
In a taxable account, compare the tax cost of selling specific lots with the cost of remaining concentrated. In a retirement account, a trade may not create an immediate capital-gains tax bill, but plan rules, investment menus and withdrawal considerations still matter. Do not transfer assumptions between account types.
4. Select the least disruptive route that meets the risk objective
If the position is only slightly above your review band, redirecting contributions may be sufficient. If a sharp decline would threaten a near-term goal, a direct sale may be more appropriate despite a tax bill. A combination can reduce risk now while limiting the size of a single taxable realization. The decision should be tied to the target allocation, not to a prediction about the stock’s next move.
5. Place trades deliberately
- Confirm the account, number of shares, order type, lot-selection method and estimated proceeds.
- Check for blackout periods, employer-plan restrictions and any pending corporate action.
- Review the order preview for fees and the expected tax-lot selection.
- After execution, save the confirmation and update your allocation spreadsheet or portfolio software.
- Direct future contributions and dividends to the underweighted investments specified in your plan.
Situations that need extra care
Employer stock and compensation plans
Employer stock can combine investment risk with job and income risk. Restricted stock, options, employee purchase plans and tax-advantaged employer shares may have different tax rules, vesting conditions or trading restrictions. Obtain the plan documents and ask a tax professional how a sale affects basis, withholding and any special treatment before acting.
Retirement accounts
Rebalancing inside a retirement account may avoid an immediate taxable capital-gain event, but it does not remove market risk or plan limitations. Check the available investment menu, trading frequency rules, fees and the effect on future withdrawals. Keep the retirement allocation consistent with the role that account plays in your overall plan.

Funds that look diversified but are not
Count the underlying holdings, not just the fund label. A narrowly focused sector or thematic fund can leave you heavily exposed to the same economic driver as your individual stock. Look for overlap by company and industry before concluding that buying the fund has solved the concentration.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using a universal rule: No official source reviewed establishes one percentage that is right for every investor.
- Trading solely because the stock rose: Rebalance to your chosen allocation rather than attempting to time the market.
- Ignoring taxes until after the order: A large unrealized gain can materially change the best route and timing.
- Looking at one account only: Concentration often spans taxable, retirement and employer accounts.
- Assuming new contributions fix the problem quickly: Calculate how long that method would take under realistic savings and market assumptions.
- Overlooking wash sales: Automatic reinvestment or a purchase in another account can affect a loss deduction.
- Replacing one concentration with another: Moving proceeds into a narrowly focused fund may leave the underlying risk largely intact.
How to monitor the portfolio after rebalancing
Set a calendar review—such as quarterly or semiannually—and an allocation band that prompts action. At each review, update market values, new contributions, withdrawals and employer equity. Recheck your target when your time horizon, income, emergency reserve, tax situation or major goals change. A written policy helps distinguish a planned rebalance from an emotional response to headlines.
Keep records of trade confirmations, tax-lot instructions, basis adjustments and the reason for each allocation change. Those records make future tax reporting and portfolio reviews more reliable.
When professional advice is worth the cost
Consider individualized advice when the position represents a substantial share of household wealth, carries a large embedded gain, comes from complex compensation, or is linked to a business or employment relationship. A fiduciary financial professional can compare allocation paths, while a tax adviser can calculate lot-specific consequences and wash-sale exposure. Provide both professionals with a complete list of accounts and related holdings so they evaluate the concentration as a household-level risk.
