If your bank account was debited but a UPI payment shows failed or the recipient did not receive the money, the amount should be reversed under the Reserve Bank of India’s failed-transaction rules. The deadline is different for a person-to-person or account transfer (T+1 calendar day) and a merchant payment (T+5 calendar days). If the reversal misses that limit, RBI rules provide ₹100 per day in compensation, credited automatically. First save the transaction details, check the final status in your UPI app and statement, raise the issue in the app, and contact the bank holding the debited account.
Start with the two facts that control your case
A failed UPI debit is not governed by one universal “five-day refund” rule. RBI Circular RBI/2019-20/67, issued on 20 September 2019, separates the problem into two scenarios:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Transaction type | What has failed | RBI outer limit | Compensation after the limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Funds transfer to a person or another bank account | Your account is debited, but the beneficiary is not credited | T+1 calendar day; the beneficiary bank must reverse if it cannot credit the beneficiary by then | ₹100 per day beyond T+1 |
| Merchant payment | Your account is debited, but confirmation does not reach the merchant location | T+5 calendar days for auto-reversal | ₹100 per day beyond T+5 |
Here, T means the calendar date on which the transaction took place. The limits are outer limits for resolution, not a promise that every reversal will take exactly one or five days. RBI says operators should try to resolve failures sooner. The framework quoted in the circular covers domestic transactions in which both the originator and beneficiary are in India.

NPCI uses the plain-language description many customers see in this situation: “My UPI transaction has failed but my bank account has been debited.” That wording describes the problem; it does not by itself establish whether the payment has finally settled, is still pending, or is due for reversal.
What to do immediately
1. Check both the UPI app and the bank statement
Open the transaction details in the UPI app and note whether the status is failed, pending, successful, or otherwise unresolved. Then check the account statement or balance for the debit. A failed-looking screen is not, on its own, proof of the final settlement outcome: a transaction can still be processing, or the debit can reverse after the app displays an error.
Do not assume that a merchant’s first response settles the question either. The merchant may not yet have received confirmation even though the payment network is still completing or reversing the transaction. Use the transaction record and the bank statement together.
2. Preserve the transaction record
Before the app history changes, save the information needed to trace the debit:

- UPI transaction reference or transaction ID
- Transaction date, including the calendar date used as T
- Exact amount debited
- Name or identifier of the beneficiary or merchant
- Status shown in the UPI app and the full failure message, if one appears
- A bank-statement entry or other account evidence showing the debit
Keep screenshots or a downloaded statement in a secure place. Do not publish your UPI PIN, one-time password, card details, or full account credentials while reporting the issue. A complaint needs the transaction identifiers, not your security secrets.
3. Decide whether it was a transfer or a merchant payment
Ask what you were trying to do. Sending money to another individual or to a bank account is the funds-transfer category. Paying a shop, website, biller, ticketing service, or other business for goods or services is the merchant-payment category. The distinction determines whether you use T+1 or T+5.
If the payment was made through a merchant checkout but the beneficiary was an individual, use the facts of the actual transaction shown in your UPI record rather than the appearance of the checkout screen. When the category is unclear, tell the bank exactly what you paid for and provide the transaction ID so it can classify the event.
4. Raise the issue through the UPI app
Use the transaction’s complaint or help option in the UPI application. Select the failed or debited transaction and submit the reference number, amount, date, and the fact that the account was debited. Save the complaint or ticket number returned by the app.

App menus and labels can change between providers, so follow the wording currently shown in your application rather than relying on an old screenshot or a generic button name. If the app cannot accept the complaint, record that failure and move to the bank that holds the debited account.
5. Contact the bank that was debited
NPCI’s UPI FAQ specifically advises contacting the bank when a UPI transaction has failed but the amount has been debited and has not reversed immediately. Give the bank the same transaction ID, date, amount, status message, and statement evidence. Ask the bank to register or trace a failed-transaction complaint and provide a reference number.
The bank holding the debited account is the practical starting point because it can see the debit and the reversal entry. If the payment involved another bank or a merchant, the first bank can route the transaction through the applicable UPI process; you should still retain every reference number.
6. Avoid creating a second debit while the first is unresolved
Before trying the payment again, confirm whether the original transaction is still pending or has already completed. If the merchant or beneficiary needs payment urgently, explain that the first debit is under investigation and keep evidence of any second transaction separately. Treat each transaction ID as a separate case; do not let a new payment replace the record of the original debit.

How the RBI deadlines work
Funds transfer: T+1
For a UPI transfer to another person or account, the relevant failure is a debit without credit to the beneficiary. If the beneficiary bank cannot credit the beneficiary by T+1, it must reverse the transaction by that limit. For example, if T is 14 October, T+1 is 15 October because RBI defines T using calendar dates. If the reversal is not completed by the applicable limit, the prescribed compensation is ₹100 for each day beyond T+1.
The ₹100 figure is a regulatory compensation amount for delay beyond the limit, not a fee you must negotiate. RBI directs that the compensation be credited automatically, without waiting for the customer to complain or submit a separate claim.
Merchant payment: T+5
For a merchant payment, the relevant failure is a debit without transaction confirmation reaching the merchant location. Auto-reversal is due within T+5 calendar days. If T is 14 October, the fifth calendar day after T is 19 October. A failure to reverse after that limit attracts ₹100 per day beyond T+5 under the RBI framework, and that compensation is also to be credited automatically.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →This does not mean every merchant debit should remain unresolved for five days. The circular calls the prescribed turnaround time an outer limit and says failures should be resolved sooner where possible. Check the status daily and contact the bank as soon as the debit is visible and does not reverse immediately.

What to do when the applicable limit has passed
Confirm that the money has not already returned
Look for a separate credit or reversal entry in the statement, not only a change in the UPI app’s history. Compare the credited amount with the original debit and check the value date. If the principal has returned but the delay compensation has not, ask the bank to explain how it applied the automatic-compensation direction for the transaction.
Follow up using the existing complaint record
Give the bank your original complaint number and state which deadline applies: T+1 for a beneficiary who was not credited, or T+5 for a merchant who did not receive confirmation. Ask for the current status, the expected reversal entry, and the handling of any compensation due under the RBI rule. Keep the response in writing where the bank offers that option.
Use the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme route
If the applicable TAT has passed without redress, RBI’s circular points customers to the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme. Use the current instructions for that scheme and provide the bank complaint reference, transaction record, statement evidence, dates, and the outcome of your follow-ups. The circular establishes the escalation route, but the material available here does not establish every current eligibility condition or a guaranteed processing time. Do not assume that filing automatically means immediate recovery; submit a complete record and follow the scheme’s current requirements.

Common mistakes that delay resolution
- Treating every case as T+5: a person-to-person or account transfer uses T+1 when the beneficiary was not credited. T+5 is for a merchant debit with no merchant confirmation.
- Counting from the day you complain: T is the transaction’s calendar date. The clock does not start when you open a support ticket.
- Assuming “failed” means the debit is final: verify the account statement and allow for a later reversal or settlement update.
- Waiting silently for the outer limit: NPCI’s guidance supports contacting the bank when the debit does not reverse immediately, even while the applicable TAT is running.
- Expecting to claim the ₹100 manually: RBI’s direction says compensation is automatic. Still mention the missed deadline in your complaint so the bank can trace the required credit.
- Using the wrong bank: start with the bank account that was actually debited, and give it the UPI reference so it can investigate the network leg of the payment.
- Sharing security credentials: transaction support should not require your UPI PIN or one-time password.
- Assuming the rule covers every geography: the cited RBI framework is for domestic transactions where both originator and beneficiary are in India.
A compact record to keep until the case is closed
Create one note containing the transaction ID, T date, amount, beneficiary or merchant, app status, failure message, debit timestamp, reversal timestamp if received, bank complaint number, and every follow-up date. Add copies of the relevant statement entries and screenshots. This prevents a support agent or an Ombudsman submission from having to reconstruct the timeline from memory.
Keep the record until the principal has returned and any compensation required for a late reversal has been credited or explained. If you make another payment to the same beneficiary or merchant, record that transaction separately so the bank can distinguish the two debits.
The practical answer
Identify the transaction category, preserve the reference and debit evidence, report it in the UPI app, and contact the debited bank without waiting for the money to disappear from your records. Apply T+1 to a funds transfer where the beneficiary was not credited and T+5 to a merchant payment where confirmation did not reach the merchant. Those are RBI outer limits for domestic transactions, with ₹100 per day in automatic compensation after the relevant limit. If the bank does not provide redress after the limit, take the documented complaint to the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme route.
