If an older adult shared information with a suspected scammer, the situation is urgent but manageable. End the contact, send nothing else, and tell a trusted person. Then contact the bank or payment service about any money that moved, secure every exposed account, and use the FTC’s identity-theft tools if Social Security, Medicare, or other identifying details were involved. A payment may or may not be recoverable, and a credit freeze helps with new credit—not every kind of fraud.
Take these steps first
Scammers often create urgency, secrecy, or fear. The older adult is not to blame for being pressured. Focus on stopping further access and preserving choices about what happens next.

- End the conversation. Hang up, stop replying, close the chat, and end any remote-access session. Do not click another link, call a number supplied by the scammer, or trust caller ID.
- Send nothing else. Do not provide another password, one-time code, Social Security number, account number, gift-card number, photograph of an ID, or payment.
- Use a separate trusted device if practical. If the scammer is still connected to a computer or phone, disconnect that session before changing passwords or contacting institutions.
- Tell someone trusted. A family member, friend, caregiver, or other trusted person can help slow down pressure tactics and make calls. The older adult should remain involved and decide what assistance is welcome.
- Write down what happened. Record the date and time, the person’s claimed organization, phone numbers, email addresses, websites, messages, what was shared, and whether money moved. Keep receipts, transaction confirmations, gift cards and packaging, emails, and case numbers.
Verify every future contact independently. Look up the institution’s known website or use a number printed on a card or statement. Never use a callback number, link, or “support” contact supplied by the suspected scammer.

Ask two factual questions: What information or access was shared? and Did money move? More than one branch can apply. For example, a scammer may obtain a bank-account number and a reused email password, or a Medicare number and a payment.

If money was sent or a payment method was exposed
Contact the bank, payment company, card issuer, wire service, gift-card company, cryptocurrency platform, or delivery service immediately. Say that the transaction was fraudulent, identify the payment type and time, and ask whether it can be stopped, reversed, or recovered. The FTC advises acting quickly, but recovery is not guaranteed and depends on the method and facts.
| Payment method | Who to contact | What to request |
|---|---|---|
| Bank transfer or wire | The bank or credit union’s fraud department | Ask whether the transfer can be stopped or reversed and whether the receiving institution can be contacted. |
| Wire-transfer service | The company that handled the wire | Report the fraud immediately and ask what cancellation or recovery process remains. |
| Payment app | The app’s official support or fraud channel and, if linked, the bank or card issuer | Request a reversal, account review, and steps to secure the linked funding source. |
| Gift card | The company behind the card | Report the fraudulent gift-card payment promptly; keep the card and packaging and provide the receipt or card number through the official channel. |
| Cryptocurrency | The exchange or wallet service used, if any | Report the transfer and ask what tracing, account-security, or recovery options exist. A completed blockchain transfer may be difficult or impossible to reverse. |
| Mailed cash | The delivery service and the financial institution, if a withdrawal was involved | Report the fraud and ask whether the package can be intercepted or whether any related transaction can be stopped. |
| Debit or credit card | The number on the card or the issuer’s known website | Report the charge, ask about a dispute, and request a replacement card or account security review. |
Use the FTC’s payment guidance at What To Do if You Were Scammed for the current route for each payment type. The FTC states: “If you paid someone one of these ways, act quickly to report it to the company or bank behind the gift card, cryptocurrency, payment app, or wire transfer service.”
A government report does not replace a call to the payment provider. Ask for a case or reference number and note the representative’s name, the time of the call, and any documents requested. Do not pay a person who promises to recover the money for an upfront fee; that is a common follow-on recovery scam.

Ask what protective action fits the account. Depending on the exposure, the institution may recommend blocking or replacing a card, changing online credentials and a PIN, freezing or closing an account, or adding extra monitoring. IdentityTheft.gov advises contacting companies where fraud occurred, asking them to close or freeze compromised accounts, and changing logins and PINs.
Review checking, savings, card, brokerage, and payment-app activity for unfamiliar withdrawals, purchases, transfers, new payees, changed contact details, or altered security settings. Report unauthorized activity promptly under the institution’s instructions. Save statements and screenshots showing disputed activity. If a caller later asks for a “verification” code or new password, do not provide it; call the institution back through a known channel.
If a password, email account, or device was exposed
Change the exposed password to a new, strong password. Change it anywhere else it was reused. Start with the email account if it controls password resets, then secure financial, health, shopping, and social accounts.
The FTC’s exact instruction is: “If you gave a scammer your username and password, create a new, strong password.” Use each institution’s official account-recovery page or a number from a statement—not a link in the scammer’s message.

After changing the password, review:
- Recovery phone numbers and email addresses.
- Logged-in devices and active sessions; sign out of ones the older adult does not recognize.
- Email forwarding rules, filters, and sent messages.
- Multifactor-authentication methods and backup codes.
- Recent password-reset notices or account changes.
If remote-access software was installed or the scammer controlled the phone or computer, disconnect the session and use a trusted local technician, manufacturer support channel, or other independently verified help to remove unauthorized access. Secure accounts from a clean device when possible. Do not call a number displayed in a pop-up and do not pay an unexpected “technician” or “recovery specialist.”
If a Social Security number or other identity details were disclosed
Go to IdentityTheft.gov and answer its questions. It provides an individualized recovery plan and, when identity theft has occurred, an FTC Identity Theft Report. The plan can include contacting companies where fraud occurred, changing passwords and PINs, checking credit reports, and reporting the theft.
Identity information can be misused even when no fraudulent account is visible yet. Watch for unfamiliar credit inquiries, accounts, collection notices, tax correspondence, employment records, insurance claims, or government benefits. Keep a dated file of every call, letter, report, and account change.

Fraud alert or credit freeze? Know the difference
Both measures concern access to credit reports, not the security of an existing bank account. They can be used separately or together, depending on the circumstances.

| Feature | Fraud alert | Credit freeze |
|---|---|---|
| Who can use it | Anyone can request a free one-year alert; an extended alert is available to identity-theft victims. | Anyone can place one, and it is free to place and remove. |
| How to start | Contact one nationwide credit bureau; that bureau must notify the other two. | Contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion separately. |
| What it does | Asks businesses to take steps to verify identity before granting new credit. | Restricts access to the credit report, which can make opening new credit in the person’s name harder. |
| How long it lasts | One year for the standard alert; seven years for the extended alert described by IdentityTheft.gov for identity-theft victims. | Until the consumer lifts it temporarily or removes it. |
For current bureau contact routes and instructions, use the FTC’s IdentityTheft.gov guidance. A freeze does not secure an existing checking account, stop a scammer from using an already compromised login, or prevent every form of identity misuse. Continue monitoring accounts and resolving problems with each affected company.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If a Medicare number or medical information was disclosed
Do not give a Medicare number to an unexpected caller. The FTC says, “Medicare representatives will only ask for information if you contact them first.” Review Medicare statements and explanations of benefits for services, equipment, or providers the older adult does not recognize.
Question unfamiliar services with the provider or health plan. If someone used the information for medical care, notify the provider or plan, ask how to correct the record, and report medical identity theft through IdentityTheft.gov. The FTC also identifies Senior Medicare Patrol and Medicare as reporting routes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIn a May 2026 consumer alert, the FTC estimated that Medicare fraud, errors, and abuse cost taxpayers about $60 billion every year. That figure is an estimate for the combined problem, not a precise measure of intentional fraud alone.

Report the scam and preserve evidence
Report the incident to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. If identity theft occurred or identity details were exposed, use IdentityTheft.gov for the report and recovery plan. Reporting helps authorities identify patterns, but it does not itself stop a payment or guarantee a refund.
Keep evidence in a private folder: messages, emails and available headers, caller numbers, websites, receipts, card packaging, transaction records, screenshots, and institution case numbers. Do not post Social Security numbers, account numbers, passwords, or medical details in email, social media, or public comments.
A practical follow-up schedule
Today
- End contact and remote access.
- Tell a trusted person.
- Call every bank, card issuer, payment provider, or service involved in a payment.
- Change exposed and reused passwords, beginning with email.
- Ask institutions whether cards or accounts should be blocked, replaced, frozen, or closed.
Within the next few days
- Review statements, transactions, account settings, and credit activity.
- Place a fraud alert or freezes if appropriate to the identity exposure.
- Complete the IdentityTheft.gov plan if Social Security or other identity information was involved.
- Check Medicare statements and contact the provider or plan about unfamiliar care.
- File the FTC report and organize your evidence.
Keep monitoring
- Open every bank, card, credit, insurance, tax, and medical notice and question anything unfamiliar.
- Follow up on institution case numbers and keep copies of correspondence.
- Recheck recovery email addresses, phone numbers, forwarding rules, and multifactor settings after account changes.
- Be suspicious of anyone who now promises a refund, demands secrecy, or asks for another fee or code.
How a family member or caregiver can help
Ask permission before taking over calls or accounts. Sit with the older adult while they contact the institution, read back the facts, and help maintain the evidence file. Use the older adult’s known contact information and let the institution explain which authority or authorization it needs before discussing account details.
Keep the conversation factual and nonjudgmental: what was shared, what money moved, which accounts may be affected, and what action is next. Pressure, embarrassment, or blame can make someone hide a second contact from the scammer. The goal is to restore control, not to punish a mistake.
When to get additional help
Ask the financial institution about its fraud or elder-abuse team if money is missing, a caregiver suspects ongoing exploitation, or the older adult cannot safely manage the account alone. Consider local legal or adult-protective services resources when there is coercion, a dependent adult is at risk, or someone has unauthorized control of finances. Use official government and institution channels, and avoid paid “recovery” services that demand money before doing anything.
For readers outside the United States, the FTC and IdentityTheft.gov procedures are US-specific. Use your country’s financial regulator, fraud-reporting service, identity-recovery process, and credit-reporting agencies instead.
