A rejection is a lender’s credit decision; it does not by itself show that your credit report is wrong or that the lender acted unlawfully.
This guide applies to borrowers in India. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Fair Practices Code for NBFCs requires fair processing, proper appraisal and grievance arrangements, but the material available does not establish a universal, detailed right for every NBFC applicant to receive a written rejection explanation. A separate RBI direction expressly covering banks and financial institutions (FIs) says they should communicate the main reasons for rejected loans in writing, so confirm which rule applies to your NBFC and product.

Your first 24 hours after the rejection
- Save every record. Download the rejection email or notice, note the application or reference number, record the submission date, and preserve the documents you supplied.
- Request the reason in writing. Ask for the main factor or factors behind the decision and whether the decision used information from a credit-information company. Keep the request and the lender’s reply.
- Check your credit information. Obtain reports from the credit-information companies (CICs) that maintain your file and look for inaccurate identity data, account status, repayment history, balances and unfamiliar enquiries.
- Pause new applications. Applying repeatedly before you understand the rejection can create more enquiries and makes it harder to distinguish the original problem from later applications.
These steps create an evidence trail. They also separate a correct risk decision from a decision based on stale, mismatched or fraudulent information.
Ask the NBFC for a clear written explanation
Use a concise message that identifies your application and asks for the principal reason, not a generic statement such as “internal policy.” Request clarification if the lender cites a credit report, income assessment, documentation problem or existing obligation. You are entitled to keep a record of what was asked and what was answered, even where the lender’s policy does not require a detailed explanation.

Subject: Request for written reason — loan application [application number]
I applied for [loan type] on [date], reference [number]. Please provide the principal reason or reasons for the rejection and identify any information supplied by a credit-information company that materially affected the decision. Please also tell me how to correct or resubmit any document that was incomplete or inconsistent.
The NBFC Fair Practices Code discusses acknowledgement and processing of applications, proper credit appraisal and grievance arrangements. One RBI fair-practices instruction framed for banks and FIs says the main reason or reasons for rejection should be communicated in writing across loan categories. Because that instruction is not presented as a universal rule for every NBFC, do not quote it as an automatic entitlement without checking the current direction, the NBFC’s category and the product involved.
Check every credit report used in the decision
Request your reports directly from the relevant CICs. An RBI circular from 2016 describes one base-level consumer Credit Information Report free each year from each CIC; confirm the current access process and report format when you request it. Download the report rather than relying on a score shown in an app, because the underlying account and enquiry details are what you need to verify.
Review these fields line by line
- Identity: name spelling, date of birth, PAN or other identity details, addresses and phone numbers.
- Accounts: loans and cards that belong to you, lender names, account status, sanctioned and outstanding balances, dates opened and closed, and whether an account wrongly appears active or settled.
- Repayment history: overdue amounts, days-past-due entries and months marked late when you paid on time.
- Enquiries: applications you made and any enquiry you do not recognise.
- Personal details and addresses: old or unrelated information that could cause a lender’s identity or fraud checks to fail.
A rejected application is not itself proof that the report is inaccurate. The useful question is whether the report contains a specific item that is wrong, belongs to another person, or was not updated after you paid or closed an account. A report may list an enquiry even when the lender ultimately says no; any effect on a score depends on the CIC and scoring model, so the available RBI material does not support a universal number of points lost for a rejection.
Dispute an error with evidence
If you find a wrong account, payment status, identity detail or enquiry, write to both the CIC and the lender that supplied the data. Identify the exact field, account number or enquiry date; explain what is incorrect; state the correction you seek; and attach legible supporting records such as payment confirmations, closure letters, identity documents or correspondence.

- Send the dispute through the CIC’s current grievance channel and the lender’s customer-care or grievance channel.
- Save the submission, attachments, acknowledgement and reference number.
- Check the corrected report after the parties respond. If the entry remains wrong, quote the earlier reference number in your follow-up rather than opening an unrelated complaint.
- Keep a dated chronology in case you need to use the lender’s escalation route or an applicable RBI complaint process.
RBI credit-information directions address access and grievance redress, but the detailed text surfaced for this topic came through a secondary mirror. Do not rely on an unverified deadline or compensation figure; use the current official CIC and RBI wording when deciding whether a particular remedy or time limit applies.
Find the real application weakness before reapplying
Once the report is clean or a dispute is underway, compare what you submitted with the NBFC’s stated eligibility criteria. Proper appraisal is part of the Fair Practices Code, but the Code is not an exhaustive list of every reason an application can fail. Use this checklist to identify fixable mismatches.
Documents and identity
- Ensure the name, date of birth, PAN, address and employment details match across the application, identity documents, bank statements and tax records.
- Check that salary slips, bank statements and income-tax documents cover the period requested and are readable, complete and authentic.
- Explain legitimate changes, such as a recent employer change or address update, instead of leaving conflicting information unexplained.
Affordability and existing obligations
- Recalculate income after fixed deductions and list every current loan, card balance, guarantee and recurring repayment accurately.
- Test the requested amount and tenure against the monthly repayment you can sustain; a smaller amount or longer tenure may fit a lender’s affordability assessment, but it increases total interest in many products.
- Do not omit obligations simply because another lender has not yet reported them to a CIC.
Eligibility fit
- Read the NBFC’s current requirements for income, employment type, location, age, credit history, collateral and minimum or maximum loan size.
- Confirm that your requested amount is within the stated range and that you meet any employment-tenure or business-vintage requirement.
- Use the lender’s own calculator or written quotation to verify the repayment, fees and documentation before submitting another application.
These checks are practical diagnostics, not a claim that RBI publishes a single national rejection taxonomy. If the lender will not identify a deficiency, do not invent one; rely on your report, documents and the published eligibility criteria.

The rejection decision and the credit enquiry are separate events. A lender may record an enquiry when it assesses your application, while the fact that it declined you is not necessarily shown as a separate “rejection” entry. Inspect the enquiries section of each report for applications you made and for any you did not authorise. The available material does not establish one universal score change for an NBFC enquiry, because CIC data and scoring methods can differ.

If you see an enquiry you did not make, dispute it promptly with the CIC and the named lender. If you are planning another application, first resolve identity or account errors and limit applications to lenders whose published criteria you are likely to meet.
When can you apply again?
No general RBI waiting period was established for a borrower whose NBFC application was rejected. Do not rely on advice to wait exactly 30, 90 or 180 days unless the particular lender confirms that policy. The appropriate timing is when the cause has been addressed: a report corrected, an income document replaced, an existing obligation reduced, or an eligibility requirement met.
Ask the original NBFC whether it permits reconsideration, a fresh application after a stated interval, or a lower amount. A corrected credit report can remove an error, but it cannot guarantee approval; the lender will make a new assessment under its then-current risk policy.

Use the NBFC’s grievance process for process problems
A grievance is appropriate when the lender did not acknowledge or process the application as described, used demonstrably wrong information, failed to respond to a documented correction, charged an unexplained amount, or did not provide the service information required by its policy. It is not an appeal that forces a lender to approve credit.

- Find the grievance officer’s name and contact details in the NBFC’s Fair Practices Code, website or loan communications.
- Write a short chronology with the application date, reference number, rejection date, requests made and responses received.
- Attach the rejection notice, your written request, relevant report pages and proof supporting any correction.
- State the service remedy you want, such as correction of data, an explanation of a processing step or confirmation that a complaint was closed.
- Keep the acknowledgement and final response.
Do not send passwords, one-time passwords or unnecessary full identity documents through an unverified address. Use the contact details published by the NBFC and redact information that is not needed to resolve the complaint.

RBI consumer information describes a complaint route for eligible complaints against covered regulated entities when the lender’s internal process remains unresolved for the stipulated period. The material surfaced for this topic identifies 30 days, but you should check the current scheme, the NBFC’s coverage and the RBI Complaint Management System before filing.
An RBI complaint concerns an eligible service or process deficiency. It does not operate as a credit-approval appeal, and an Ombudsman process cannot guarantee that an NBFC will sanction the loan. Include your internal complaint reference, dates, documents and the specific service failure; explain why the lender’s response was inadequate.
Compare another lender on more than the advertised rate
If you decide to apply elsewhere, shortlist lenders whose criteria match your circumstances and compare the complete borrowing proposition before authorising a new enquiry.

| What to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Eligibility | Are your income, employment, credit history, location and existing obligations within the stated criteria? |
| Total cost | What are the interest method, processing fee, taxes, insurance, late charges and foreclosure or part-payment costs? |
| Repayment | What is the monthly instalment, total repayment and tenure, and can your budget withstand a rate or income change where applicable? |
| Documentation | Which identity, income, bank and collateral documents are required, and how will mismatches be handled? |
| Service and complaints | How are applications acknowledged, how can you contact the grievance officer, and what escalation route is available? |
The Fair Practices Code emphasises material loan information that lets borrowers make informed comparisons. A lower advertised interest rate can still produce a higher total cost when fees, insurance or a longer tenure are added.
A note for first-time borrowers
A text of RBI credit-information directions surfaced for this topic suggests that a first-time borrower’s application should not be rejected solely because the person has no credit history. The available URL was a secondary mirror rather than an RBI-hosted canonical page, so verify the current official direction and whether it applies to your lender and product before relying on it in a complaint. Having no history is different from having a damaged history, and neither condition guarantees approval.
Keep a simple rejection file
Maintain one folder containing the application, acknowledgement, rejection notice, lender correspondence, each CIC report, dispute references, supporting documents and grievance responses. Record dates and the names of people or channels used. This prevents inconsistent explanations on a later application and gives an investigator the facts needed to correct a genuine data or process problem.
