1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf an income-tax reassessment does not show which income item changed or how the authority calculated the change, do not guess and do not ignore it. First authenticate the notice through the tax authority’s official online account or a telephone number published on its official website. Record the issuing agency, tax year, reference number, notice date, amount, stated legal provision and response instructions. Then compare it with your filed return and supporting records, request an issue-specific explanation, and check the formal objection or appeal deadline immediately. A clarification request should not be assumed to pause or extend that deadline.
This is general information, not jurisdiction-specific legal or tax advice. The correct response depends on the country or state, the type of notice, the tax year, the date of issue and the authority’s procedure. Follow the instructions and law that apply to the notice you actually received.

Why a reassessment can look disconnected from your income
A reassessment is not necessarily a finding that you earned undeclared wages. An authority may be correcting an arithmetic or data-entry issue, applying information received from another organization, changing a deduction or credit, or asking you to substantiate a position on the return. The document may also be a proposed adjustment or information request rather than a completed reassessment. Those categories can have different response channels, evidence requirements and deadlines.

Step 1: Authenticate and identify the exact notice
Use an independently verified channel. Sign in to the tax authority’s official taxpayer portal by typing the known web address yourself, or call the published number shown on the authority’s official website. Do not rely solely on a phone number, QR code or link contained in an unexpected email or text. Ask the representative to confirm that the notice exists in your account and that the reference number and issue date match your copy.
Create a one-page identification record containing:
- The issuing tax authority and, if relevant, the state, province or local office.
- The tax year or accounting period.
- The document title, such as proposed adjustment, information request, notice of assessment or notice of reassessment.
- The notice or case reference number and date of issue.
- The amount changed, including tax, interest or penalties if separately shown.
- The legal section, code provision or explanation printed on the notice.
- The response method, mailing address, portal path and any stated deadline.
Save the original PDF or scan, the envelope or electronic delivery record, and screenshots showing when the notice appeared in your account. Keep a log of every call, including the date, time, department, name or identification number supplied by the representative, and what was said. A call log does not replace a formal filing, but it prevents a later dispute about what you asked and when.

Step 2: Determine whether it is a proposal, request or final reassessment
Look for words such as “proposed,” “preliminary,” “request for information,” “notice of assessment” or “notice of reassessment.” The practical differences are significant.
| Document situation | What it usually means | Immediate focus |
|---|---|---|
| Information request or proposed adjustment | The authority is seeking information or has not completed the final decision. | Answer through the stated channel, identify the requested items, and note any separate deadline. |
| Completed assessment or reassessment | The authority has recorded a tax result that may be disputed under a formal objection or appeal process. | Confirm the formal dispute deadline and filing method even while seeking an explanation. |
| Correction of an omission or incorrect entry | Your filed return may contain missing, transposed or incorrectly entered information. | Ask how to amend or correct the return and whether the authority requires a particular form or portal action. |
| Disagreement with a complete return | You believe the information was reported correctly but the authority applied the law or evidence incorrectly. | Use the jurisdiction’s objection or appeal route and explain each disputed issue with supporting facts. |
Do not infer the category from the amount alone. A small balance can still have a short response period, and a large balance can arise from a routine third-party mismatch.

Step 3: Ask for a usable explanation
Contact the authority through the verified channel and ask narrowly framed questions. Request the specific income item, information source, calculation and legal adjustment that produced the change. For example, ask:
- “Which line, schedule or income category on my return was changed?”
- “What amount did you use, and what amount did I report?”
- “What information source produced the figure—an employer, financial institution, payer or another record?”
- “Was the change caused by income, a deduction, a credit, withholding, interest or a penalty?”
- “Which provision or published rule was applied?”
- “What documents would resolve or substantiate this issue?”
- “Is this a proposed adjustment, or has a final reassessment already been issued?”
Ask for the response in writing when possible. Keep your question, attachments and the authority’s reply together. The Canada Revenue Agency’s objection guidance indicates that it can provide certain documents related to disputed issues to help explain an assessment, although exceptions apply. That does not mean every document must be supplied before your dispute deadline, so continue protecting the deadline independently.

Step 4: Reconcile the notice with your own records
Start with the filed return exactly as submitted, not a reconstructed version from memory. Mark every line or schedule mentioned in the notice and compare it with the original data. Build an issue-by-issue worksheet with four columns: your reported figure, the authority’s figure, the difference and the evidence that explains the difference.
Records to gather
- A complete copy of the filed return and schedules for the affected year.
- Income slips, statements, invoices, payment-platform reports and accounting ledgers.
- Bank records or other proof of receipt where the authority’s figure differs from your records.
- Documents supporting deductions, credits, business expenses or loss claims connected to the disputed line.
- Prior assessments, reassessments and correspondence about the same item.
- Proof of filing and delivery, including portal confirmations and mailing receipts.
Check for common mechanical causes without assuming one occurred: a slip assigned to the wrong tax year, a duplicate information slip, a transposed digit, a currency conversion difference, a late correction by a payer, or a deduction entered on the wrong line. These are possibilities to test against the documents, not explanations you should assert without evidence.
Separate a return error from a legal disagreement
If you discover that you omitted income or entered a figure incorrectly, ask the authority how to correct the return. If the return is complete and accurate but you disagree with the authority’s treatment, use the formal dispute route. Canada Revenue Agency guidance makes this distinction expressly for federal personal income tax: correcting omitted or incorrectly entered information is different from registering a formal dispute when the taxpayer disagrees with an assessment or reassessment. Other jurisdictions use different terminology and forms, so confirm the route with the issuing authority.

Step 5: Protect the objection or appeal deadline
Read the deadline printed on the notice and verify it against the authority’s current official instructions. Record the date calculated from the notice date, the permitted filing methods and any rules for substituted service or late delivery. A request for clarification, a telephone conversation or an extension request may not suspend the clock.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For context only, the Canada Revenue Agency’s current guidance accessed in 2026 states that in most Canadian income-tax cases a formal dispute must be registered within 90 days from the notice date. That 90-day period is a Canadian example, not a universal tax deadline and not a rule for every Canadian tax, taxpayer or notice. The notice and current instructions control.
If the explanation is still incomplete as the deadline approaches, file the required objection or appeal with the information available, identify the disputed items and state that additional documents or reasons will follow if the local procedure permits. Do not submit a generic protest if the process requires itemized reasons. Keep proof of timely delivery.
Step 6: Prepare an issue-by-issue response
A strong response lets a reviewer match each disputed amount to a document and a reason. Organize it in this order:
- Identify the decision. State the notice type, tax year, reference number and date.
- List each disputed item separately. Use the notice’s line, schedule or description where available.
- State the facts. Explain what happened, when the income was received and which records support it.
- State the requested result. Say whether you seek cancellation, a different amount, correction of a data entry or another specified action.
- Attach indexed evidence. Number the documents and refer to each number in the explanation.
- Address undisputed items. If part of the reassessment is correct, say so rather than disputing the entire notice.
Ontario guidance for certain listed provincial taxes illustrates the level of detail expected in an objection: describe each issue and fully set out the supporting facts and reasons. That is an Ontario example, not a universal federal income-tax rule, but it is a useful model for making a submission reviewable.

Country and notice examples
Canada: federal personal income tax
For a Canadian federal assessment or reassessment, first determine whether you are correcting a missing or incorrect entry or disputing the result despite a complete return. The Canada Revenue Agency’s decision guidance directs taxpayers to have related correspondence available. Its dispute publication explains that certain documents connected with disputed issues may be provided to help explain the reasons, subject to exceptions. Confirm the formal objection route and the deadline shown for your notice; the 90-day period described above applies to most Canadian income-tax objections, not automatically to every situation.
United States: CP2000 only
An IRS CP2000 is a specific notice reflecting a mismatch between information on a filed return and third-party information received by the Internal Revenue Service, such as information from an employer or financial institution. If your document is a CP2000, follow its response instructions and compare the listed third-party amounts with your return and payer records. Do not assume that every U.S. reassessment or balance-due notice is a CP2000; other IRS notices have different purposes and procedures.
India: reassessment process under the Income Tax Act, 2025
The Income Tax Department’s FAQ describes a process that can involve information suggesting escaped income, an opportunity to respond to a show-cause notice, consideration of the reply and a reasoned order. Confirm that the statute has commenced and applies to the notice at issue, and follow the period and portal instructions printed on that notice. Do not import a deadline or form from another Indian tax procedure.
Ontario provincial taxes
For the specified provincial taxes covered by Ontario’s guidance, an objection should describe each issue and fully set out the supporting facts and reasons. Identify the provincial tax and notice type before using that guidance; it should not be treated as a rule for every Canadian federal or provincial income-tax matter.
When to get professional help
Consider a qualified tax professional or tax lawyer when the amount is high, several years are involved, the notice raises fraud or gross-negligence allegations, records are missing, a business or trust is affected, or the legal issue is unclear. Verify the person’s qualification, authorization to deal with the relevant authority and experience with the specific tax. Ask what they will do before the deadline and who is responsible for filing proof of the submission. A professional cannot safely advise on a deadline without seeing the actual notice and jurisdiction.

Common mistakes and safer alternatives
- Ignoring an unclear notice: uncertainty about the explanation does not remove the response obligation. Authenticate it and calendar the deadline.
- Assuming the authority made a mistake: obtain the underlying line, source and calculation before choosing correction or dispute.
- Waiting for a phone call to resolve everything: ask for written clarification but preserve formal rights independently.
- Sending every document you own: provide relevant, indexed evidence and protect unrelated personal information.
- Using a deadline from an online discussion: rely on the notice and current official instructions for your jurisdiction.
- Disputing the whole amount automatically: concede accurate portions and identify only the items in issue.
- Paying or refusing payment without checking consequences: payment, collection activity, interest and stay rules vary by authority and notice type; obtain jurisdiction-specific advice promptly.
A compact action checklist
- Authenticate the notice through the authority’s official portal or published contact channel.
- Record the issuer, tax year, notice type, reference number, date, amount, legal provision and response instructions.
- Save the document, delivery evidence and all correspondence.
- Ask which income item, source, calculation or legal adjustment caused the change.
- Compare the notice with the filed return, slips, statements and prior correspondence.
- Decide whether the records show a correction or a disagreement with the assessment.
- Confirm the formal objection or appeal deadline and filing method.
- Prepare an issue-by-issue explanation with indexed supporting documents.
- Submit through the required channel and keep proof of delivery.
- Escalate to an appropriately qualified adviser when the value, complexity or risk warrants it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does asking the tax authority for more details extend my deadline?
Do not assume it does. Check the notice and current official instructions, and preserve any objection or appeal deadline while waiting for a reply.
What if I cannot tell whether the notice is genuine?
Do not use contact details in an unexpected message. Sign in through the authority’s known official portal or use a telephone number published on its official website to verify the notice.

Should I amend my return or file an objection?
If your return contains omitted or incorrectly entered information, ask about the correction route. If the return is complete and you disagree with the authority’s treatment, the formal objection or appeal route may be appropriate; the issuing authority’s rules control.
Can the authority collect the reassessed amount while I dispute it?
Collection, payment, interest and any suspension rules differ by jurisdiction and notice type. Check the notice and obtain local advice rather than assuming that filing a dispute stops collection.
