Do not change the invoice yourself or assume that an electric vehicle must have a particular GST rate. Check the bill against your booking and rental terms, then ask the rental provider in writing to explain the service classification and calculation. If the invoice is wrong, the provider—not the renter—must issue the appropriate correction and deal with its GST records.
First, check what the invoice actually charges
A GST amount can look wrong for several reasons: the taxable value may be incorrect, a rate may have been applied incorrectly, the tax components may not match the transaction, or the bill may describe a different service from the one you booked. Start by identifying the exact line item and the specific discrepancy rather than relying on a rate found in a general online search.

Collect the invoice, booking confirmation, rental agreement or terms, payment record, and any separate documents for a driver, fuel, or charging. These records help establish what the provider agreed to supply and what it actually billed. Note the invoice date, because the applicable rate and correction procedure may depend on the date and rules in force then.

- Check the service description and any SAC or service classification printed on the invoice.
- Identify the taxable value and the rate applied to it. Recalculate the displayed tax amount using those figures.
- Look for separate charges, discounts, or adjustments and compare them with the booking and payment record.
- Check whether tax appears as CGST plus SGST or UTGST, or as IGST. Do not conclude that the split is wrong without the supplier and place-of-supply details.
- Compare the billed service with the contract: self-drive or operator-provided, fuel included or excluded, and rental or lease.
Keep the check focused on the invoice and agreement. The fact that the vehicle is electric does not, on its own, establish the service category or the applicable GST rate.

Why an EV rental does not have one automatic GST rate
GST classification turns on the service supplied, not just the vehicle’s powertrain. CBIC’s published rate material separates categories of transport-vehicle rental services. Relevant facts include whether a driver or other operator is supplied, whether fuel is included, and whether the arrangement is a rental or a lease. Charging arrangements can also matter to understanding what was supplied and billed; a separately listed charging amount should be checked against the contract rather than treated automatically as part of the vehicle-rental rate.
CBIC’s rate table includes a 5% entry for renting a passenger motor vehicle when fuel cost is included, subject to an input-tax-credit condition. That entry is not a blanket rate for every EV rental. CBIC clarifications distinguish renting a vehicle with an operator from leasing without one, and CBIC’s sectoral FAQ points to headings 9966 or 9973 for a vehicle taken on rent or lease. Those classification pointers do not by themselves determine the rate for every arrangement.
| Arrangement detail to check | What the official guidance establishes | What to verify for your invoice |
|---|---|---|
| Passenger motor vehicle rental with fuel cost included | CBIC’s published rate table lists a 5% entry subject to an input-tax-credit condition. | Whether the billed service meets that entry’s conditions, and whether it applied on the invoice date. |
| Vehicle supplied with an operator | CBIC guidance treats operator-provided renting as a relevant distinction from leasing without an operator. | Whether the agreement includes a driver or operator and how the provider classified the actual service. |
| Lease without an operator | CBIC guidance distinguishes this arrangement from renting with an operator; the sectoral FAQ identifies headings 9966 or 9973 as classification pointers. | Whether the contract is a lease or a rental and which rate entry applies to the actual supply. |
The table is a way to organize the questions, not a rate ruling for your bill. In particular, do not take a rate shown for a fuel-included category and apply it automatically to a self-drive EV booking, a lease, or a transaction with separately billed items. The complete terms and the rate notification effective on the invoice date matter.

Ask the provider for a specific explanation
Send a written message to the rental provider’s billing or tax team. A phone call can help resolve a simple query, but keep a written record of the request and response. Ask the provider to identify the service it believes it supplied and show how it reached the amount charged.
Request these details:
- The SAC or other service classification and the invoice’s service description.
- The taxable value used for the calculation, including how separately listed charges or adjustments were treated.
- The GST rate and the notification basis the provider relies on for the invoice date.
- The tax components charged—CGST and SGST/UTGST, or IGST—and the supplier and place-of-supply details supporting that treatment.
- The arrangement facts supporting its classification, including operator, fuel, charging, rental, or lease terms where relevant.
- If the bill is wrong, the correction document and the supplier-side GST record amendment it will make.
Attach or quote the relevant invoice line and booking reference. State the mismatch plainly—for example, that the billed service description appears inconsistent with the agreement, or that the tax figure does not recalculate from the displayed taxable value and rate. Avoid stating that a particular rate must apply unless the contract and applicable rate entry support that conclusion.
If the provider says the amount is correct, ask it to connect the classification to your specific agreement. A different percentage on another rental company’s website, or a general table that covers a different type of supply, does not establish that your invoice is wrong.

What to do if the provider confirms an error
The renter cannot edit the supplier’s tax invoice or amend the supplier’s GST return. Ask the provider to issue the appropriate corrected tax document and update its GST records through the valid supplier-side process. Keep the original invoice and the correction together; do not silently overwrite or discard the original record.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsGSTN’s Invoice Management System FAQ, question 9, advises that an incorrect invoice should be corrected through an invoice amendment in GSTR-1 rather than through a credit note unlinked to the original invoice. The FAQ explains that without the relationship between the invoice and credit note, the system may not be able to determine whether the original invoice was accepted or rejected. GSTN’s portal guidance also describes invoice amendments and amended notes.
There is a separate e-invoice nuance. IRIS IRP guidance says an e-invoice cannot be amended on the portal and describes cancellation within 24 hours; after that window, it says the supplier may need to change GSTR-1, for example by using a credit note. This is guidance about e-invoice system handling, not permission for a renter to cancel or change the supplier’s document. GSTN’s later IMS FAQ favors amending an incorrect invoice through GSTR-1. The provider should determine the valid correction route for its document type, filing period, and current portal workflow.

When the provider agrees to correct the bill, ask what document it will issue, when it expects to issue it, and how the corrected details will appear in the relevant GST records. If the invoice is an e-invoice, ask the provider to explain how its proposed correction fits the applicable e-invoice and return process. The portal mechanics can change, so the supplier should verify the current procedure rather than treating an older cancellation instruction as universal.

Preserve the invoice, contract, payment evidence, your written query, and the provider’s reply. If the discrepancy remains clear and unexplained, use the provider’s customer complaint or escalation route and include the specific calculation or contract mismatch. Ask for a written decision. For a business rental
Send the invoice and correspondence to the person responsible for accounts payable or GST reconciliation. Ask them to track whether the supplier’s corrected document and corresponding portal record are received. If the provider disputes the correction or the tax amount is material, consult a tax professional with the invoice, contract, invoice date, and supplier explanation. Those details are needed to assess both classification and the appropriate response.

Business recipients: reconcile before deciding on input tax credit
GST appearing on a rental invoice does not, by itself, establish that the recipient can claim input tax credit. Eligibility depends on the law and the recipient’s circumstances, and a disputed invoice should not be treated as conclusive proof of entitlement. Obtain the supplier’s correction where needed, reconcile the corrected document with the relevant GST portal data, and get tax advice before claiming or retaining disputed ITC.
Keep a simple record of the sequence: original invoice, supplier query, response, corrected invoice or amendment details, and reconciliation outcome. This makes it easier to show which document supports the accounting treatment and to resolve a mismatch if the portal record and invoice do not agree.
A practical decision path
- Save the source documents. Keep the invoice, booking confirmation, rental terms, payment record, and driver, fuel, or charging details.
- Pinpoint the mismatch. Recalculate tax from the displayed taxable value and rate, check invoice descriptions, and identify whether the question concerns the rate, value, tax split, or service classification.
- Ask the provider in writing. Request the SAC, rate basis, calculation, tax components, and facts supporting the classification.
- Assess the answer against the deal. Compare the provider’s explanation with the contract and the applicable CBIC category for the invoice date; do not rely on the EV label alone.
- Request supplier-side correction if warranted. Ask for the corrected tax document and the appropriate GST record amendment. The supplier must choose the valid procedure for the document and filing period.
- Close out your own records. Consumers should keep the correspondence and use the provider’s complaint route if needed. Business recipients should reconcile records and assess ITC separately.
Rate rules and portal workflows can change. For a precise rate conclusion, the invoice date, full rental terms, supplier details, place of supply, and current official notification all need to be checked together.
