Do not make a panic trade based on one red candle. First verify that the price move is real and that you are looking at the correct token, trading pair and time period. Then check whether a market-wide move, a project event, or an exchange and wallet problem explains it. Revisit your original investment thesis, position size, time horizon and ability to absorb a total loss before deciding whether to hold or reduce the position. Do not add money simply to get back to your entry price, and treat anyone offering to recover your losses for an upfront payment as a likely scam.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) says, “The risk of loss for individual investors who participate in transactions involving crypto assets, including crypto asset securities, remains significant.” Its March 23, 2023 investor alert is staff guidance, not a Commission rule.

What should I do first when an altcoin suddenly drops?
Use a short pause to establish what actually happened. A quoted percentage can be misleading if it compares different time periods, uses a thin market or reflects a temporary data error.
Confirm the asset, pair and timeframe
- Check the token’s exact name and contract or ticker. Similar symbols can represent unrelated assets.
- Confirm the trading pair, such as the token against a major currency or stablecoin. A move in one illiquid pair may not represent the broader market.
- Compare several reputable market data views and select the same interval (for example, one hour, one day or one week). Record the high, low, volume and time shown rather than relying on a screenshot.
- Check whether the venue actually lists and trades that pair. A stale quote, an index price or a delisted market can look like a live loss.
This verification step is a practical response to risks the SEC describes, including extreme volatility, illiquidity and markets that can become unavailable. It is not an official SEC checklist.

Check trading, withdrawals and custody status
Open the exchange’s status page and your account notices. Look for a trading pause, scheduled maintenance, suspended deposits or withdrawals, changed withdrawal limits, or a requirement to complete identity checks. If you hold the token in a self-custody wallet, verify that the correct network is selected and that the wallet still displays the relevant balance. A price chart cannot tell you whether an access problem is temporary, a venue restriction or a permanent loss of liquidity.
Do not treat an exchange’s statement about reserves as a guarantee that you can withdraw. The SEC notes that “proof of reserves” can be a limited snapshot and is not as rigorous or comprehensive as a financial-statement audit.
How can I find a credible explanation for the fall?
Once the move is verified, separate three possibilities: a broad market move, an event specific to the project, or a trading-platform problem. The same price pattern can result from very different risks, so the response should not be chosen from the chart alone.

Broad market movement
Compare the token’s move with the wider crypto market over the same interval. If many unrelated assets fell at the same time, the token may be participating in a market-wide risk-off move. That observation does not make the asset safe or establish that it will recover; it only prevents you from attributing every decline to a project failure without evidence.

Project-specific developments
Read the project’s official announcements, governance notices, documentation and filing or audit disclosures, where applicable. Look for facts such as a security incident, a chain halt, a material change to token supply, a failed upgrade, a legal action, a treasury or developer departure, or a promised feature being cancelled. Verify the date, the affected network and whether the statement comes from an authorized channel. Distinguish a confirmed announcement from a rumor that merely repeats the price move.
Exchange or market-structure problems
Check whether the venue has paused trading, widened spreads, limited withdrawals or removed the pair. A token can lose its practical value to you if there is no reliable way to trade or transfer it, even when a chart still displays a price. Liquidity can disappear and a market can become untradeable; the SEC includes those possibilities in its crypto-asset risk warnings.
Why social-media explanations are weak evidence
Influencer posts, anonymous accounts and a sudden claim that a “recovery” is imminent are not independent verification. The SEC warns that promoters may use social media in pump-and-dump schemes and advises investors not to make decisions based solely on social-media information. Treat a post as a lead to investigate, not as proof of a cause or a bottom.

The SEC’s investor guidance recommends having a plan, understanding risk tolerance and time horizon, and not allowing short-term emotions to disrupt long-term objectives. Those principles cannot identify the right transaction for a particular person.
Should I sell my altcoin after a crash?
There is no universal source-based instruction to sell, hold or buy more. A reduction can be consistent with your plan when the original reason for owning the asset has failed, the position is larger than your stated limit, you need the funds for a near-term obligation, or trading access and liquidity have materially deteriorated. A sale also creates a realized disposal for tax purposes in many jurisdictions, so record the details before submitting an order.
Holding can be consistent with a plan when you have reviewed credible information, the thesis and allocation still fit your stated risk capacity, and you can tolerate further losses and uncertain access. “Holding” is not the same as assuming a recovery is likely; it means accepting the risks identified in your plan without making a new emotional bet.

Should I buy more after the price drops?
A lower quote alone does not show that an altcoin is cheap, that its fundamentals improved, or that a rebound is probable. Adding money only to return to your entry price is a form of recovery trading: it increases the amount at risk while leaving the original uncertainty unresolved. The token may continue falling, lose liquidity or become untradeable.
Consider an additional purchase only if it is permitted by a plan you made independently of the drop, fits your target allocation and time horizon, and leaves you able to meet essential obligations even after a severe loss. Treat a new purchase as a new investment decision; do not use the old purchase price as evidence that the new one is sound.

Document the problem immediately: capture the displayed balance, error message, order status, transaction ID, network and timestamp. Read the venue’s official status and support instructions, and use only contact details obtained from its verified website or application. Do not repeatedly submit transactions while a chain or exchange is reporting an outage; duplicate attempts can create additional fees or confusion.

Do not assume that a later price recovery will restore access. Keep copies of account statements and correspondence in case you need them for a complaint, legal process or tax records. The SEC’s risk guidance specifically warns about platform failure, withdrawal suspensions and the possibility that a market becomes unavailable.

How do I avoid scams after a loss?
Losses create a target-rich moment for fraudsters. Be especially skeptical of unsolicited messages that know the amount you lost, promise a guaranteed recovery or claim to be affiliated with a regulator, exchange or law firm.
- Never disclose a private key or seed phrase. A legitimate support representative does not need it to inspect an account.
- Do not pay an unexpected “tax,” release charge, verification deposit or unlock fee to withdraw funds.
- Do not send additional crypto to a purported recovery agent who says it is needed to retrieve your original funds.
- Navigate to the platform’s known website or application yourself instead of clicking a link in a direct message.
- Preserve the message, wallet address, transaction hash and payment record if you suspect fraud, then report it through the relevant platform and authorities in your jurisdiction.
SEC staff have described false withdrawal charges and recovery solicitations that request private keys or more cryptocurrency. A promise of guaranteed recovery is a warning sign, not evidence that the person can access your account.
What records should I keep for taxes?
Save trade confirmations, execution dates and times, quantities, prices, fees, wallet transfers, deposits, withdrawals and the method used to calculate your cost basis. Keep records for each lot if you bought the same token at different prices. Export statements before closing an account or moving assets to another wallet.
U.S. federal tax reminder
In Tax Tip 2026-07, published January 28, 2026 for 2025 digital-asset documents, the Internal Revenue Service says broker Form 1099-DA statements may omit basis, so taxpayers may need to calculate it themselves. The IRS states: “Every taxpayer must report any related income, gains, or losses, whether they receive a Form 1099-DA or not.” A price decline by itself is different from a completed sale or another disposal; the tax result depends on what happened and on the taxpayer’s facts.
That guidance is U.S.-specific. If you live elsewhere, use your local rules and obtain professional advice when records are incomplete, transactions span wallets or jurisdictions, or the amounts are material. Do not infer a tax loss from an unsold chart decline.
A practical decision sequence
- Pause: avoid market orders placed solely because the chart is falling.
- Verify: confirm the token, pair, timeframe, venue, volume and current trading or withdrawal status.
- Investigate: compare broad-market movement with dated, independently verifiable project and platform information.
- Re-read your plan: test the original thesis, allocation, time horizon and maximum tolerable loss.
- Choose only a plan-consistent action: hold, reduce or add only when the decision fits rules made for your circumstances; otherwise wait and seek qualified advice.
- Secure access: ignore recovery offers, protect private keys and use official support channels.
- Record everything: preserve statements, transfers, fees, basis data and the reason for your decision.
Questions this process cannot answer
No general guide can identify the cause or future direction of a particular altcoin’s move without the token, venue, jurisdiction and current facts. It also cannot determine your suitable allocation, tax treatment or whether a specific exchange is solvent. Those questions require current, independently verified information and, where appropriate, advice from a licensed financial or tax professional in your jurisdiction.
