Airtel Money reversal rules are country-specific, and a pending transaction should not be retried until its status is confirmed. Save the confirmation SMS, receipt or transaction ID, amount, date, sender number and recipient number, then use the official support route for the country where the wallet was registered.
Kenya publishes a self-service reversal menu, Tanzania lists a different menu, and Uganda’s terms make reversal discretionary rather than automatic. Recovery can depend on whether the unintended recipient has withdrawn or spent the money.

First, identify the Airtel Money country
Airtel Money is not operated through one universal reversal process. USSD codes, helplines, eligibility rules and claim deadlines differ by market. Confirm the country of the sending wallet—not merely the country where you are currently located—before entering a code or calling a number.
The procedures documented for Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania are summarized here. They should not be treated as instructions for every Airtel market.

If the transfer says pending
No reviewed official Airtel source sets a universal resolution time, mandatory waiting period or retry interval for a pending Airtel Money transaction. A pending label therefore cannot safely be converted into a promise that the payment will settle in a certain number of minutes or hours.
- Read the transaction SMS carefully. Check whether it says successful, unsuccessful, pending or gives a reason for failure. In Kenya, Airtel’s terms say an unsuccessful transaction is reported by SMS with its reason, while a successful transfer includes a unique receipt number.
- Check the wallet’s transaction history if your local service provides it. Compare the amount, recipient and status with the SMS. Record the transaction or receipt reference exactly as shown.
- Do not send the payment again while the status is unclear. A second transfer can create two completed payments if the first one later succeeds.
- Use the official local support channel. Give the agent the receipt or transaction ID, the exact wording of the status message, amount, date and time, sender number and intended recipient number. Ask whether the first transaction is completed, failed or still being processed before taking any further action.
- Keep the original message and any case reference. Do not delete the SMS or rely on a screenshot with missing details; the full message can help Airtel identify the transaction.
An SMS that reports an unsuccessful transaction is not the same as a completed transfer that went to the wrong number. Follow the error or support instructions in the message, and do not assume that a failed payment has automatically returned until the wallet balance or an official confirmation shows the credit.
If you sent money to the wrong number
Contact Airtel as soon as you discover the mistake. The practical recovery window can close when the unintended recipient redeems, withdraws or spends the funds, and some terms give Airtel discretion rather than guaranteeing a refund.

Kenya: domestic Airtel Money
Airtel Kenya’s getting-started instructions say to dial *334#, choose My Account, then choose Reverse transaction. The same page directs customers to call 100 for assistance if needed.
Use the transaction SMS to identify the payment. Airtel Kenya’s terms say a successful transfer carries a unique receipt number that can track and identify it. Keep that number with the amount, date, sender number and wrong recipient number when you contact support.
Kenya: international transfer service
A separate Airtel Kenya FAQ covers an international-transfer service and directs the sender to call 1522. Be ready to provide the amount sent, your number, the wrong number and the correct number. Airtel says it can retrieve money from the wrong recipient if that person has not yet withdrawn it, return the money to the sender, and require the sender to make a new transfer to the intended customer.

That instruction applies to the transfer service addressed by the FAQ. It does not establish that 1522 supersedes the domestic *334# and 100 routes for every Kenyan Airtel Money transaction.
Uganda: a discretionary exception, not an automatic reversal
Airtel Mobile Commerce Uganda Limited’s terms and conditions state: “A Transaction once completed is final and irrevocable, and AMC Uganda shall not be under any compulsion to reverse any Transaction.”
The same terms reserve discretion to cancel or reverse for reasonable grounds such as manifest error or fraud when the recipient has not redeemed the e-money and the claim is made within one month of the erroneous transfer. If the mistaken recipient has already redeemed or spent the money, the terms say Airtel is not compelled to compensate the sender.

Report the problem through Airtel Money customer care on 100 or the additional contact number +256200202003. State that the transfer was erroneous, give the transaction reference and make the timing of your claim clear. The published terms do not promise that a request will succeed.
Tanzania: use the listed reversal menu, but verify it first
Airtel Tanzania’s customer guide describes this route for money sent to the wrong recipient: dial *150*60#, select My Account, choose My Transaction Reversals, and then select Initiate Reversal.

The guide separately lists Approve Pending Reversal for a customer who received money by mistake. Because the guide was published several years before the current instructions were compiled, the menu may have changed. If the option is absent, stop rather than guessing and confirm the current process with Airtel Tanzania customer care.

What determines whether the money can be recovered?
- Recipient activity: Retrieval is more plausible before the unintended recipient withdraws, redeems or spends the funds. Kenya’s international-transfer FAQ expressly makes retrieval conditional on the money not having been withdrawn.
- Country terms: Uganda’s terms describe completed transactions as final and irrevocable in general and allow only a discretionary exception for qualifying error or fraud claims.
- Speed and complete information: A prompt report gives Airtel the transaction reference and recipient details while the payment may still be traceable. It is not a guarantee of reversal.
- Transfer type: Domestic wallet transfers and international-transfer services can have different support routes, as the two Kenyan instructions demonstrate.
- Evidence of the transaction: The confirmation SMS and receipt number help support identify exactly what happened. Never alter or forward an incomplete message as if it were the original.
Information to prepare before contacting Airtel
Write down the details before opening a support request so you can give a consistent account:
- Country of the sending Airtel Money wallet.
- Sender’s Airtel number.
- Wrong recipient’s number and the intended recipient’s number.
- Amount and currency.
- Date and approximate time.
- Receipt number, transaction ID or case reference.
- Exact status shown in the SMS or account history.
- Whether the recipient has confirmed receiving, withdrawing or spending the funds, if you know.
For the Kenyan international-transfer route, Airtel specifically asks for the amount, sender number, wrong number and correct number. Providing those details immediately can prevent a second call to collect basic information.
Protect yourself from reversal scams
A caller may claim to be arranging a refund and ask for the information needed to take money instead. Airtel Kenya says its customer care will call only from 0733100000 and will not ask for your Airtel Money PIN or one-time password (OTP).

- Do not approve an unfamiliar prompt on your phone merely because someone says it is a reversal.
- Use the number or USSD route published for your country, rather than a contact supplied by an unsolicited caller.
- Keep the receipt number private except when dealing with verified Airtel support.
A legitimate support agent may need transaction details to locate the payment, but a PIN or OTP is an authentication secret and should remain with you.

- Wrong number in Tanzania: check the listed
*150*60#reversal menu, then confirm with Airtel if the option is not present. - Any suspected scam: end the call and contact Airtel through a verified channel without sharing your PIN or OTP.
