If AI-linked shares fall sharply, start with a portfolio inventory and your existing investment plan—not a prediction about the next market move. Identify direct and hidden AI exposure, compare it with the allocation that fits your goals and risk tolerance, then use a preselected rebalancing method while checking taxes, fees, liquidity and diversification. A decline is a scenario to prepare for, not an event that current evidence proves is certain or precisely predictable.
What an AI-stock bubble burst would—and would not—mean
Investor.gov defines a bubble as “the rapid rise in the price of an investment, reflecting a high degree of collective enthusiasm or exuberance regarding the investment’s prospects.” That definition describes a market condition, not a timetable. The available evidence does not establish that AI stocks are currently in a bubble, identify a burst date or provide a dependable way to time one.

There are reasons to examine concentration risk. The International Monetary Fund has discussed vulnerabilities from high valuations and concentrated exposure. In one calculation, private fixed investment in information-processing equipment—used as a proxy for AI-related data-center investment—contributed around 57 percent of U.S. real GDP growth since the fourth quarter of 2024. That figure measures a proxy’s contribution to GDP growth, not AI-stock performance and not proof of a bubble.

1. Inventory every source of AI exposure
List direct positions
Write down each individual company whose revenue expectations, valuation or investor narrative is strongly tied to artificial intelligence. Record the ticker, number of shares, current value, account type and percentage of the total portfolio. Include positions held in taxable accounts, retirement accounts and employer plans if you are assessing household exposure.
Look through funds, not just at their labels
Open the latest holdings report or fact sheet for every broad-market, technology-sector or thematic fund you own. Note the largest positions and their weights. Several funds can hold the same large technology companies, so adding funds does not automatically reduce concentration. A fund marketed as focused on a particular theme may be especially concentrated, while a broad fund can still have substantial exposure to a handful of very large companies.
| Holding type | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Individual company | Company value, portfolio percentage and dependence on AI-related growth expectations | A single security can dominate losses even when the rest of the account is diversified |
| Broad-market fund | Largest positions and combined weight of overlapping companies | Multiple funds may repeat the same holdings |
| Technology or thematic fund | Mandate, top holdings, sector and geographic mix | A basket of securities is not necessarily diversified |
| Employer or retirement plan | Plan fund menu and any company-stock position | Exposure can be overlooked when accounts are reviewed separately |
Build a simple exposure worksheet
For each holding, enter its portfolio weight and classify it as direct AI exposure, indirect exposure through a fund, or not materially AI-linked. Do not try to assign a precise “AI percentage” to a diversified company when the information is unavailable. Instead, flag positions where the investment case and valuation are heavily dependent on AI-related expectations. Add the flagged weights to see how much of the household portfolio could be affected by the same narrative.

2. Compare the actual portfolio with your plan
Start with goals and time horizon
Write the purpose and expected date for each major pool of money: emergency reserves, a near-term purchase, education, retirement or a long-term legacy. The amount of loss you can financially absorb may differ between a goal due in two years and one due in three decades. A temporary decline is not equally manageable in every account.
Separate willingness from capacity to take risk
Risk tolerance is your willingness to endure losses; risk capacity is what your finances can withstand without derailing a goal. Consider income stability, debt, emergency savings, upcoming withdrawals and whether a large decline would force you to sell. If either your circumstances or your willingness has changed, revisiting the allocation can be appropriate. A recent winning streak by itself is not a sound reason to chase a sector.
Measure drift from the intended allocation
Compare current percentages with the asset mix you selected for your goals and risk profile. Include stocks, bonds, cash and any other categories in the comparison. The question is not whether AI shares have risen the most; it is whether the portfolio still serves the plan you chose. Save the target percentages and the date of the review so a later decision is based on a documented rule rather than on a headline.

3. Choose a rebalancing rule before you need it
The SEC describes rebalancing as returning a portfolio to its intended allocation. It recognizes calendar-based reviews and threshold-based reviews, without prescribing one schedule for everyone. A rule can reduce the temptation to make an all-or-nothing decision during a volatile session.

Choose a recurring review date, such as a period you can consistently follow, and compare actual weights with targets. Rebalance only when the review shows that an action is warranted under your plan. The SEC notes that rebalancing tends to work best relatively infrequently; excessive trading can add cost and complexity.
Threshold review
Set a written tolerance for allocation drift and act when a category moves outside it. The appropriate threshold depends on your plan, account taxes, costs and ability to monitor it. Do not adopt a numerical threshold simply because another investor uses it.

Use contributions, sales or both
| Method | How it works | Questions to answer |
|---|---|---|
| Direct new money | Send new contributions toward categories that are below target | Will contributions be large enough to correct the drift, and are payroll or account rules flexible? |
| Trim overweight holdings | Sell part of positions that exceed the plan’s weight and direct proceeds to underweight categories | What transaction fees, spreads and taxable gains could result? |
| Combine methods | Use contributions for part of the correction and sales for the remainder | Does the sequence reduce taxes or concentration without delaying the plan? |
Before selling, the SEC advises considering whether the chosen method will trigger transaction fees or tax consequences. In a taxable account, identify the lots, estimated gain or loss and holding period; in a retirement account, check the plan’s trading rules and any applicable withdrawal restrictions. A tax professional can address circumstances that a general checklist cannot.

There is no universally suitable replacement for AI holdings and no hedge that fits every investor. Judge any proposed change by its role in your plan rather than by its label.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Goal and horizon: Does the change support the date and purpose of the money?
- Concentration: Would it reduce dependence on the same companies, sector or economic driver, including overlap inside funds?
- Risk: Could the proposed asset fall for a different reason, or introduce risks you do not understand?
- Diversification: Does it spread exposure across asset categories and, where appropriate, across holdings within each category?
- Fees and liquidity: What ongoing expense, bid-ask spread, trading cost or withdrawal limitation applies?
- Taxes: Would implementation create taxable gains or alter the tax characteristics of the account?
- Rule consistency: Is the move required by your written rebalancing process, or is it a reaction to recent performance?
Keep diversification in two dimensions. Across asset categories, review the balance among equities, fixed income, cash and other permitted categories. Within a category, inspect whether funds and individual securities repeat the same companies or industry risks. A fund containing many securities can still be dominated by a few positions.

5. Use a decline checklist instead of trying to call the bottom
Before a decline
- Save current statements and holdings reports for every account.
- Calculate direct and estimated indirect AI exposure and record the assumptions used.
- Document goals, time horizons, target allocation and the circumstances that would justify changing them.
- Choose a calendar or threshold review process and note how often you will check it.
- Identify cash needs so a market decline does not force an avoidable sale to fund a near-term expense.
During a sharp fall
- Verify the price move and the information source; do not make a decision from an unverified social-media post or an AI-generated forecast.
- Recalculate portfolio weights after the move. A falling asset may be less overweight, while another holding may now dominate the risk mix.
- Ask whether your goals, time horizon, finances or risk tolerance changed. If not, follow the rebalancing rule rather than inventing a new one in the middle of volatility.
- Check estimated taxes, fees, spreads and account restrictions before placing any order.
- Document the decision, including why it fits the plan and what would cause the next review.
After the review
Update the holdings worksheet and target percentages. If the experience shows that a loss was larger than you could tolerate, address that mismatch through a deliberate plan change after the review—not by making a series of unplanned trades. A qualified financial professional or tax adviser can help with complex retirement, tax or allocation questions.
6. Filter AI investing claims and fraud signals
The SEC, the North American Securities Administrators Association and FINRA warn about schemes that claim artificial intelligence can guarantee returns or predict market direction and security prices. SEC guidance specifically cautions investors against relying on AI-generated information to forecast a market or a security’s price. Treat confident language, “can’t lose” systems, pressure to act immediately and unverifiable performance records as warning signs.
- Ask who operates the service, how it is regulated and what the complete fee schedule is.
- Demand a clear explanation of risks, assumptions and the possibility of loss.
- Independently verify account statements, custody arrangements and withdrawal rules.
- Do not send money or personal information solely because a chatbot, video or website claims an AI model has special predictive power.
- Compare any proposal with your written allocation plan and with information from official investor-education or regulatory sources.
7. Know when personal advice is warranted
A general checklist cannot determine an appropriate allocation, tax strategy or hedge for an individual. Consider qualified advice when selling could create a large taxable gain, when several retirement accounts interact, when a concentrated position came from employer compensation, or when a near-term goal conflicts with long-term investing. Bring the exposure worksheet, account statements, target allocation, tax basis information and written rebalancing rule to the conversation. Ask the professional to explain conflicts of interest, fees, assumptions and how recommendations fit your goals and time horizon.
