Do not argue with the chatbot or repost the accusation first. Save the complete conversation and its context, record where it appeared, and assess whether anyone else saw it or whether there is an immediate safety threat. Then use the provider’s feedback channel for a private exchange, report a public copy to the site hosting it, and obtain jurisdiction-specific legal advice if the statement caused real-world harm. A false answer is not automatically a crime, defamation, or a winning lawsuit.
First, preserve exactly what happened
AI responses can change, disappear, or be edited. Make an unaltered record before trying to correct anything.

- Save the full conversation. Keep the exact prompt, the complete answer, date and time, the chatbot and account or platform, and any conversation URL. Include enough preceding messages to show what the chatbot was asked.
- Capture surrounding context. Screenshots should show the username or account identifier, publication date, comments, and the question that produced the accusation. Download or print a copy where the service allows it, but retain the original file as well.
- Record every place it appeared. Note whether the answer was private, sent to another person, posted publicly, embedded in an article, or reposted on social media. Save URLs and timestamps for public copies.
- Keep an incident log. Write down who saw the statement, when you learned of it, and any consequences such as a lost contract, workplace inquiry, school action, financial refusal, harassment, or threats. Keep related emails, messages, notices, and receipts together.
Do not repost the accusation merely to demonstrate that it is false. Repeating an allegation can expose more people to it and make the eventual correction harder. UK police guidance says you do not have to gather evidence before making a report, although screenshots, messages, video, platform details, usernames or IDs, timing, and the wording can help investigators. That is UK reporting guidance, not a universal evidence rule.
Decide whether the output is private or public
The practical response depends less on the chatbot’s confidence than on who received the statement.

How to request a correction
For a private chatbot conversation
Use the service’s in-product report, thumbs-down form, help desk or other official support route. State the exact sentence that is false, provide the factual correction, explain whether the answer was shared, and attach the preserved transcript if the channel permits it. Ask for review, correction and removal from any public display. Keep your request factual and brief.
Do not assume the provider must respond, will remove the conversation, or has a fixed response time. A support form may address model quality without creating a formal legal notice process. Avoid sending unnecessary identity documents or sensitive personal information. If you must identify yourself, provide only what the provider’s verified process requires.
For a public post or repost
Report the copy to the website or social-media platform that hosts it. Choose the closest available category, such as false information, harassment, privacy or impersonation, and describe the specific statement rather than making a general complaint. Include the URL, account name, date, and why the allegation is false. Keep a copy of the report and any automated confirmation.

Report each material copy separately if it has been reposted. Do not edit your saved evidence after filing a report. If the post disappears, your original capture and incident log may be the only record of what was published.
For an employer, school, bank or other decision-maker
Send a calm written correction to the person who relied on the output. Identify the exact allegation, attach the unedited context, and ask that the record be corrected and that no decision be based on an unverified chatbot response. Keep proof of delivery. If a formal disciplinary, admissions, lending or account-review process is involved, follow that organization’s appeal or records procedure as well as seeking legal advice where appropriate.
When legal advice is justified
A hallucinated accusation does not, by itself, prove that a crime occurred or that you have a defamation claim. Defamation rules differ by country and sometimes by state or province. A lawyer may need to examine whether the statement was communicated to someone else, whether it was false, whether it caused legally recognized harm, what fault standard applies, and whether defenses or privileges are available. Your status, the wording, the audience, and the way the content was generated or republished can all matter.

- you lost income, a customer, employment, housing, education, credit or another concrete opportunity;
- the statement remains online after a reasonable correction request;
- an authority, employer or institution is acting on it;
- you are being harassed, threatened or impersonated; or
- you are considering a demand letter, preservation request or court action.
Bring the original transcript, screenshots, public URLs, your reports, the names of recipients, and documents showing harm. Do not delete the conversation before a lawyer has had an opportunity to review it. A lawyer can also tell you whether a local privacy, consumer-protection, harassment or data-removal procedure is more suitable than a defamation claim.
What UK readers should know
Reporting false information
Police.uk describes a specific UK offence involving information that the sender knows is false and shares with the intent to cause serious harm. Its example includes falsely saying that someone committed a crime. The elements are fact-specific. An accidental chatbot output does not automatically satisfy them, and the rule should not be generalized to other countries. The relevant questions can include who generated or republished the material, what intent can be proved, and whether the legal threshold is met.

Website-host notice procedures
The UK Ministry of Justice’s section 5 guidance concerns a defense and notice process for operators of websites hosting user-generated content. It is not a chatbot-specific correction route. A solicitor can explain whether any notice procedure applies to the particular host and publication.
Emergencies
If a post includes a credible, immediate threat to life or violence, call emergency services before spending time on a provider complaint. The Police.uk instruction is 999 for UK readers; use the local emergency number elsewhere.

What the Mark Walters dispute illustrates
A 2024 article in the NYU Annual Survey of American Law describes radio host Mark Walters’s lawsuit alleging that ChatGPT generated a false account accusing him of fraud and embezzlement while answering journalist Frederick Riehl’s question about a different lawsuit. A 2025 Journal of Free Speech Law article discusses the dispute and the difficulty of applying established defamation doctrines to generated text.

Those articles describe allegations and legal analysis; they do not establish that every person receiving a false chatbot answer has a claim or predict the outcome of a different case. Use the dispute to understand why publication, audience, fault, and harm matter, not as a promise that a lawsuit will succeed.
Protect your privacy while seeking help
When asking a chatbot to explain or correct an accusation, remove details that are not needed. Do not paste identity numbers, account credentials, medical records, financial information or another person’s private data into a public AI tool. The Courts and Tribunals Judiciary’s AI guidance, updated on 31 October 2025, warns judicial office holders and their staff about entering private information into public AI tools and discusses hallucinations that produce incorrect or misleading information. Its audience is the judiciary, not a consumer complaint service, but the privacy principle is relevant when documenting your own case.

Use a redacted copy when asking a lawyer, advocate or trusted adviser for an initial view. Store the complete original in a secure location and restrict access to people who need it.
A practical decision path
- Is anyone in immediate danger? Call local emergency services; UK readers should call 999 for an emergency.
- Have you saved the exact output and context? If not, do that before contacting the provider or host.
- Did anyone else receive it? List recipients and preserve evidence of each publication or repost.
- Was it private? Use the chatbot provider’s official feedback or support route and request review without assuming a guaranteed correction.
- Was it public? Report every material copy to the platform hosting it after preserving the copy.
- Is there concrete harm or an official decision? Gather documents and consult a lawyer licensed in the relevant jurisdiction.
- Are you unsure what law applies? Do not make a public accusation in response. Get local advice based on the wording, audience, intent and consequences.
What is not yet known
There is no responsibly established statistic showing how often chatbots falsely accuse people of crimes. A handful of reported incidents cannot be converted into a prevalence rate. Different systems, prompts, account settings and publication paths make broad comparisons unreliable. Focus on the record of your individual incident and the harm it caused rather than on an unsupported estimate of how common the problem is.
