Start by finding the exact charge, then deal with the company that actually processed it. Check the voice-assistant app, the linked retailer or app-store order history, and your card or bank statement. Record the date, amount, item or service, seller and order number. Request cancellation or a refund immediately, because eligibility depends on the product, payment route, location and what happened after the purchase.
Next, disable or tighten voice purchasing before anyone tries again. Alexa, Google Assistant and third-party skills can route payments differently, so an Amazon setting may not control a charge made directly by a skill developer or another service.

Identify the charge before asking for money back
A voice command can create several kinds of transaction: a physical item from a retailer, digital content, a video rental or purchase, an app-store charge, a subscription, or an order handled by a third-party skill. The refund path follows the billing owner, not necessarily the assistant that heard the command.

- Open the assistant’s activity and purchase records. In Alexa, check the Alexa app and Amazon order history for product and order information.
- Check the linked store. Review Amazon orders, Google Play order history, or the merchant account associated with the skill or service.
- Match the payment statement. The descriptor on a card, bank or mobile-wallet statement can show whether the charge came from Amazon, Google Play, an app developer, a restaurant, or another service.
- Save the evidence. Keep the order number, receipt, date, amount, item name, seller, device and account used. A screenshot of the order page can help if the transaction later disappears from the assistant’s activity view.
If the statement names a company you do not recognize, do not assume the assistant itself billed you. Some Alexa skills collect payment through a method supplied directly to the skill developer, and Amazon’s ordinary voice-purchasing controls may not cover that transaction.

Use the transaction type to choose your first contact

Try cancellation or a refund immediately
Physical goods ordered through Amazon
Open the order in Amazon’s order history and use the cancellation option if it is offered. If the order has already entered fulfillment, the available route may be delivery refusal, return or another option shown on the order page. Amazon’s Alexa guidance points customers to its standard returns policy for non-digital products; it does not promise that every voice order can be cancelled after placement.
Do not discard packaging or use the item while the request is pending if you expect to return it. Follow the instructions attached to that specific order rather than sending a package to an address found elsewhere.
Digital Alexa content and subscriptions
Amazon generally treats digital purchases as final, but its Alexa FAQ states that accidental digital content or a subscription to a non-Amazon service purchased through Alexa can be eligible for return and refund when Amazon receives the request within seven days of purchase. Contact Amazon Customer Service promptly, identify the transaction and explain that the voice purchase was accidental. “Eligible” is a policy condition, not a guarantee that every request will be approved.
Give the representative the order number, the account email, the device used and whether the content was opened, downloaded or consumed. Avoid claiming that the transaction was unauthorized if someone in your household intentionally issued the command; describe accurately what happened.

Prime Video purchases in the UK
For a Prime Video purchase covered by the UK help process, open Your Transactions, select the order, choose Cancel Your Order, select a reason and confirm. Amazon says the accidental-order route is available within 14 days only when the viewer has not tried to watch or download the purchase. The refund is issued to the payment method used.
That 14-day rule is UK-specific. Do not apply it automatically to another country, another Prime Video storefront or a different type of digital purchase. If playback or download was attempted, use the support route shown in the account and explain the sequence of events.
Google Play purchases
Use Google Play’s refund request flow for an accidental charge made by a friend or family member using the account. Google states that refund policies differ according to what was bought, when and how it was paid for, and where the user is located. For app-related problems, Google says the developer may often be the quickest contact and can issue refunds under its own policies and applicable law.

Third-party skills, restaurants and other services
If the charge was processed by a skill developer, restaurant, app developer or another merchant, contact that business directly. Amazon says its own return policies do not apply to non-digital products or services purchased through third-party Alexa skills; the provider’s policy governs. Include the merchant’s transaction ID and ask whether the order can be cancelled before fulfillment.
Amazon’s voice-purchasing terms also warn that its settings may not apply when a third party takes payment directly. That is why the billing descriptor and receipt matter more than the assistant brand.
Turn off or restrict voice purchasing
Disable Alexa voice purchases entirely
On the current UK Alexa app instructions, use More > Settings > Account Management > Voice Purchasing > Purchase Controls > No one. App labels can change as Amazon updates the interface, so look for the Voice Purchasing or Purchase Controls area if the wording differs.

Keep voice shopping but require confirmation
If you want to retain hands-free ordering, Alexa also offers a voice confirmation code and recognized-voice controls. A code adds a spoken secret before an order is submitted; recognized-voice restrictions attempt to limit purchasing to enrolled voices. Amazon notes that recognized-voice restrictions exclude some digital-purchase categories, so they are less comprehensive than switching voice purchasing off.
Use a code that household visitors and children cannot guess, and do not speak it aloud while others are listening. Recheck the setting after changing accounts, devices or household profiles.
Protect children’s profiles
Amazon says approval is required by default for each Amazon voice purchase made through a kid skill, and voice purchasing is off for Amazon Kids on Alexa. Confirm that the child is using the intended Amazon Kids profile and that the device is linked to the correct adult account; a child speaking to an unrestricted adult profile may not receive the same controls.

For Google Assistant devices, Google says children enrolled through Family Link are prevented from making purchases through Assistant. Verify the child’s Family Link enrollment and the device association rather than assuming that a child’s voice alone activates the restriction.

Add Prime Video account protections
For households using Prime Video, Amazon’s UK guidance recommends enabling parental controls and setting a Prime Video PIN through account permissions. A PIN reduces the chance that a child can complete a purchase or open restricted content from a shared device, but it does not replace checking the billing account after an accidental order.

An accidental purchase usually means someone in the account or household issued a command, but the result was unintended: the wrong item, an accidental confirmation or a child’s command. An unauthorized charge is one that no permitted user recognizes. The distinction affects the support route and the information you should provide.
- Known household mistake: request cancellation or a refund from the billing platform, describe the error plainly and provide the order details.
- Unrecognized transaction: review account activity, change the account password, remove unfamiliar payment methods and use the platform’s unauthorized-charge process. Notify the card issuer or bank if the platform cannot resolve it.
- Compromised assistant or account: sign out unrecognized devices, review linked skills and app permissions, enable multifactor authentication where available and then contact the billing provider.
Do not call a purchase fraud simply to seek a faster refund. An inaccurate fraud report can complicate the account review and may delay a legitimate request.
What to include in your support request
A concise, factual message helps the responsible seller locate the transaction:
Order or transaction number: [number]
Date and time: [date and time]
Amount and currency: [amount]
Item or service: [description]
Account email or username: [account]
What happened: A voice command placed this order accidentally.
Requested remedy: Please cancel the order or review it for a refund.For digital content, add whether you opened, streamed or downloaded it. For a child’s purchase, state which profile and device were used. For a third-party charge, quote the exact statement descriptor and attach the merchant receipt. Keep the case number and any promised response date.
Regional and platform limits to keep in mind
Refund windows are not universal. The seven-day Alexa digital-content exception is an Amazon policy condition; the 14-day cancellation rule described above belongs to the UK Prime Video process and depends on no attempted viewing or downloading. Google explicitly says location and payment method affect eligibility.
The evidence for these exact controls is strongest for Amazon Alexa, Amazon UK Prime Video and Google Play or Assistant child features. Do not import Alexa or UK Prime Video deadlines into another assistant, country or storefront. For Siri and other platforms, identify the merchant or billing platform shown on the transaction and follow that provider’s current policy.
