If a completed UPI payment went to the wrong person, contact the bank that sent it immediately through the payment app’s transaction-help option or the bank’s official grievance channel. Give the bank the transaction reference or RRN, date, amount and recipient details shown, and ask it to register and investigate a wrong-credit complaint. Keep the complaint reference. NPCI says an initiated payment cannot be stopped, so recovery is not guaranteed.
First, check whether the payment completed
Open the transaction in the app and check its status before choosing a complaint route. Save a screenshot or statement entry and note the transaction reference or RRN, date and time, amount, and recipient details displayed. NPCI’s UPI FAQ distinguishes completed payments from failed or pending transactions: failed payments may be reversed, while some pending transactions can take time to resolve. Those processes do not mean a completed payment sent to the wrong person will automatically be refunded.

- Completed and authorized, but sent to the wrong recipient: report it to the sending bank as a wrong-credit complaint.
- Pending or failed, with a debit or unclear status: ask the bank to trace the transaction and explain the applicable status or reversal process.
- You did not authorize the payment: report it to your bank immediately as an unauthorized transaction. Do not describe an unauthorized payment as a simple typing mistake.
How to complain about a wrong UPI transfer
- Start in the app. Open the transaction and use its help, dispute or complaint option if available. State plainly that the payment completed but went to an unintended recipient.
- Contact the sending bank promptly. Use the bank’s official customer-care or grievance channel as well, and ask it to register a wrong-credit complaint and explain its investigation and recovery process.
- Provide the transaction details. Share the RRN or transaction number, date, amount, sending bank and the recipient identifier shown in your record. NPCI’s complaint form requests key transaction information, including the RRN, date, bank and amount; check the live form for its current fields and eligibility.
- Keep a record. Save the transaction evidence, complaint reference, date you reported it and any replies. Ask the bank how to follow up on the complaint.
NPCI says users can raise UPI grievances or check their status through participating banks’ UPI apps. Its complaint route forwards complaints to the relevant member institution, which is responsible for resolution. This is a way to route and track a complaint, not a separate promise that NPCI can recover the payment. For fraud, unidentified or unauthorized transactions, NPCI directs users to complain to their own bank.

Can a UPI payment sent to the wrong UPI ID be reversed?
There is no guaranteed self-service cancellation for a completed payment. NPCI’s UPI FAQ states: “No, once the payment is initiated, it cannot be stopped.” The sending bank can investigate and advise on the process available for your case, but the public guidance does not establish a universal recovery deadline or guarantee that a wrong-recipient transfer will be returned. Do not treat reversal timelines for failed transactions or institution-facing chargeback procedures as a refund deadline for this situation.
Changing UPI apps will not itself reverse a transfer. The relevant next step is to use the original transaction’s complaint route and contact the sending bank.
Escalate an unresolved bank complaint
First complain to the bank or other regulated entity and retain its reference. If it has not replied within 30 days, or you are dissatisfied with its reply, you may be able to take the service complaint to the RBI Integrated Ombudsman, subject to the scheme’s eligibility and maintainability requirements. RBI provides the CMS portal for complaints. Ombudsman escalation concerns the regulated entity’s service; it does not guarantee recovery of money from the recipient.

Protect your account while seeking help
- Never share your UPI PIN. NPCI warns: “Please do not share your UPI-PIN with anyone.”
- Use contact details from your official bank or payment app, rather than relying on unsolicited offers of help.
- Do not approve an unfamiliar collect or request-money instruction as a way to receive a refund. RBI’s CMS guidance warns against responding to unknown request-money options.
NPCI’s UPI FAQ and complaint route describe the UPI complaint process; for an individual wrong-credit case, the sending bank is the first institution to contact.
