If the register rings up an item above its shelf price, point out the mismatch before you pay and ask the cashier to verify the tag and adjust the transaction. If you notice it after payment, keep the receipt, photograph or note the shelf price, and take the item and evidence to customer service or a manager. Whether the store must honor the lower price, provide an additional statutory payment, or may refuse depends on the law where you shop and on the details of the promotion.
First, stop the transaction and identify the exact mismatch
Compare the checkout display with the shelf tag, end-cap sign, in-store app listing, flyer or other current advertisement. Confirm that the offer applies to the same product, size, flavor, quantity, store location and dates. A tag for a different package or a sale that ended yesterday may not describe the item in your cart.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) tells shoppers to watch prices as items are scanned and to point out an error immediately. Ask the cashier to pause and check the shelf or the store’s pricing system before the payment is completed. A simple script is: “This item is marked at $X on the shelf, but the register shows $Y. Could you please verify the price and apply the current price-error policy?”

- Keep the item and its location identifiable. Do not move the product or remove its packaging while the price is being checked. Note the aisle, display or sign location.
- Show the evidence. Bring the shelf tag, a current flyer, or an advertisement. If store policy permits, take a clear photograph that shows the price, product description and date or promotion period.
- Ask for the store’s price-error policy. Policies differ. Some retailers correct a scanning error; others apply a stated discount only when specific conditions are met.
- Request the adjustment before paying. Ask the cashier to call a supervisor or customer-service desk if they cannot change the price.
- Check the revised screen and receipt. Make sure the corrected amount appears before you authorize payment, and keep the receipt afterward.
If the store cannot verify the tag quickly, you can ask that the item be held while a supervisor checks the shelf. Do not argue about a rule you have not confirmed for your location; focus on the displayed price, the product match and the store’s published policy.

If you already paid
Review the receipt before leaving
Scan the receipt line by line while the transaction is still easy to trace. Mark the item, the price charged and the lower price you saw. The FTC’s Price Check II report (1998) says a pricing error may still be corrected after you leave the checkout line, although it can require more effort.
Return to customer service or a manager promptly
Take the receipt, the item and your evidence of the displayed price to the customer-service desk. Explain the discrepancy in one sentence and ask for a refund of the difference or whatever remedy the store’s policy provides. If the first employee cannot resolve it, request a manager and ask that the decision be noted on your receipt or case record.
Preserve a complete record
- The original receipt or a legible digital copy.
- A photograph or written description of the shelf tag, including aisle and date.
- The relevant flyer, email, app screen or advertisement.
- The product’s barcode, size and exact description.
- The date, time, store location and names or descriptions of staff who handled the complaint.
Keep the evidence until the refund or adjustment appears on your payment account. If you paid by card, retain the credit or debit statement showing the original charge and any later credit.

Does a store have to honor the shelf price?
There is no single rule that applies to every US store. FTC guidance says that in many jurisdictions businesses must charge no more than an advertised or shelf price, but it directs consumers to state authorities for the rule that applies locally. Some states or cities prescribe a correction, a refund of the difference or an additional payment; others treat a shelf-label error through general advertising or consumer-protection rules. The result can also depend on whether the sign was clear, current and attached to the exact item.
Do not assume that a “free item,” a multiple of the price difference or any other bonus is available nationwide. Ask the store for its policy, then check the law of your state, province or country before insisting on a specific statutory remedy.
Choosing your next step: store correction or public complaint

For a one-time overcharge, start with the store because it controls the immediate transaction. Escalate when the store refuses to investigate, does not issue a promised credit, or the same mismatch appears repeatedly. Describe facts rather than conclusions: the exact shelf wording, the scanned amount, dates, receipts and the response you received.

How to report a refusal or recurring overcharge
Write to the retailer
Use the chain’s published customer-service channel and attach a receipt image and the shelf-price evidence. State the store number, transaction date, item, amount charged, amount displayed and remedy requested. Ask for a written response and keep a copy of your submission.
Contact the right local authority
Search your state, county or city government site for the consumer-protection office or weights-and-measures department that handles retail pricing. Provide copies, not your only originals. Include contact details so an investigator can clarify the location and product.
Use the FTC complaint channel with realistic expectations
The FTC’s 1998 report explains that the agency generally does not take over individual cases. A complaint can still help identify a pattern in scanner pricing, but it is not a promise of a personal refund. Pursue the retailer and the appropriate local authority for an individual remedy.

Special cases that change the analysis
Multiple-item or loyalty promotions
“Buy one, get one,” multi-buy discounts and loyalty prices often require a membership, a minimum quantity or a specific combination. Check the full terms on the sign or app and verify that your account was recognized. A shelf tag that omits a required condition can create a separate disclosure issue, but the remedy still depends on local law and the promotion’s wording.
Expired, misplaced or ambiguous tags
A tag may have been left up after a sale ended or placed beneath a neighboring product. Photograph the location and wording, then ask a supervisor to verify which item the sign describes. Do not remove a tag or alter a display; preserving it as found makes your account more credible.

Electronic labels and app offers can update at different times. Record the time, store and exact screen showing the lower price. Ask whether the offer is store-specific, online-only or limited to registered members before treating it as the in-store shelf price.

Rain checks, substitutions and unavailable stock
If the advertised item is unavailable and the store offers a rain check or substitute, read the terms before accepting it. A rain check may preserve a sale price without changing the price of a different product. Keep the original advertisement and the rain-check document together.
UK price-label and transparency rules
UK retailers must display product prices in pounds and pence and include VAT where applicable, according to GOV.UK’s product-labelling guidance. For a labeling question or suspected breach, that guidance points consumers to their local Trading Standards service.
A CMA/GOV.UK summary updated 7 January 2026 says total prices should be clear and provided in good time, normally including unavoidable mandatory fees and taxes, reflecting relevant parts of the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024. This is a price-transparency standard; it should not be read as an automatic promise that every shelf-to-checkout mismatch entitles a shopper to a particular refund or bonus. Follow the same practical sequence—capture the displayed price, check the receipt, ask the retailer to correct it, then contact Trading Standards if the issue is unresolved or recurring.
Why old examples are not a current guarantee
An FTC release from October 1996 described Michigan law as requiring a retailer to pay an overcharged consumer ten times the price difference, up to $5. That is a historical example of how a jurisdiction can create a specific remedy, not a statement of current Michigan law or a rule for the United States as a whole. Verify the present statute or agency guidance before relying on any quoted amount.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Waiting until weeks later: delayed reports are harder to verify. Contact the store as soon as you notice the error.
- Relying on memory: save the receipt and a contemporaneous photo or note of the tag.
- Assuming every sign applies: match brand, size, quantity, dates, membership terms and store location.
- Demanding a nationwide remedy: local law may provide only a price correction, or a different remedy altogether.
- Sending originals to an agency: keep the originals and submit copies or scans.
- Expecting the FTC to issue a refund: its complaint data supports monitoring; individual recovery normally comes from the retailer or a local process.
A concise checklist for your next shopping trip
- Watch the register display as each item is scanned.
- Point out any mismatch before payment is completed.
- Show the current shelf tag, flyer or qualifying app offer.
- Ask for the store’s price-error policy and a supervisor if needed.
- Check the final receipt before leaving.
- If already charged, return promptly with the receipt, item and evidence.
- For refusal or a recurring pattern, contact corporate customer service and the relevant local consumer-protection or weights-and-measures office.
- Check your jurisdiction before claiming a statutory bonus, free item or multiple of the price difference.
Bottom line
Raise a shelf-price discrepancy immediately, document the lower price and secure a corrected receipt or refund. If the retailer refuses or the problem repeats, escalate with organized evidence to the appropriate local authority. The practical steps are broadly useful, but the legal remedy—including whether the store must honor the tag or pay extra—is determined by the jurisdiction and the exact facts.
