What to Do If a Stock You Bought Underperforms the Market

By TheFinanceBase Team 10 min read

Do not sell, hold, or buy more solely because a stock trails “the market.” First determine whether the comparison is fair, then check what changed in the company and whether the position still fits your portfolio, time horizon, goals, and risk tolerance. Only after that should you weigh taxes, fees, and order execution.

Underperformance is a signal to investigate, not a verdict that your original purchase was wrong or that the stock must recover. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Investor.gov describe this as a process of comparing like with like, reviewing current company information, and making decisions that match your circumstances. Those resources are general education, not individualized investment, tax, or legal advice.

Start by defining what “underperforms” means

A stock can be down in dollars, positive but behind an index, or ahead of its peer group while still trailing a broad market measure. Those are different situations. Write down the result you are reacting to and the exact period it covers.

  • Absolute return: the stock’s change in value, including or excluding dividends.
  • Relative return: the stock’s result compared with a chosen benchmark.
  • Portfolio impact: how much the position changed your total account after its weighting, fees, and cash flows.

A red number alone does not establish that the investment thesis failed. A company in a falling industry may decline less than its peers, while a high-growth company may rise less than a technology-heavy benchmark during a particular rally. The first task is to identify a meaningful comparison.

Choose a benchmark that matches the investment

The SEC’s Investor Bulletin on Performance Claims says the choice of benchmark matters because investors need to compare “apples to apples.” A benchmark should resemble the stock’s market segment and type of investment. A mismatch can make ordinary performance look unusually good or bad.

Match the market segment

Consider the company’s size, industry, geography, and business model. A small domestic company, a large multinational, and a sector-specific firm can respond to different economic forces. Comparing a narrow, industry-focused stock only with an unrelated broad-market index may conceal those differences. A sector or size-oriented index may provide useful context, while a broad index can still show what a diversified alternative did during the same period.

Match the investment type

Use a total-return benchmark when your stock return includes reinvested dividends, or make the treatment consistent. Price-only indexes omit distributions; comparing one to a dividend-paying stock without adjustment can exaggerate the gap. If your holding is in an account with expenses or transaction charges, note whether the benchmark figure includes comparable costs.

Use identical dates and cash-flow assumptions

Compare the same start and end dates. A stock purchased after a major market drop should not be judged against an index measured from an earlier peak. Record purchases, sales, dividends, contributions, withdrawals, and reinvestment assumptions. If you added shares over time, your personal return is a money-weighted result and will not equal the return from buying once at the start date.

Check the market conditions represented

The SEC advises questioning performance presentations that cover only a favorable slice of history. Look at periods containing both rising and falling markets where possible, rather than selecting the interval that makes one result look best. Past performance does not necessarily predict future results.

Comparison question What to verify Why it matters
Is the benchmark comparable? Similar size, industry, geography, and investment type A mismatched index can create a misleading gap
Are returns measured the same way? Price versus total return; dividends and reinvestment Distributions can materially change the result
Are dates equivalent? Identical start and end dates, with cash flows recorded Different entry points can dominate the comparison
Are costs treated consistently? Fund expenses, commissions, account charges, and taxes where relevant Net results are what you actually keep
Does the period include varied conditions? Up and down markets, not only a selected rally A single favorable period may not be representative

Calculate a fair total-return comparison

For a simple one-time purchase, a basic holding-period return is:

(Ending price − Beginning price + Dividends received) ÷ Beginning price

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is an illustration, not a substitute for your brokerage’s performance calculation. Suppose a hypothetical stock rises from $100 to $96, pays $2 in dividends, and has no other costs. Its holding-period return is −2%. If a comparable total-return benchmark gained 4% over the same dates, the relative shortfall is 6 percentage points. If you paid commissions, account fees, or taxes, your net result could differ.

For recurring purchases, use the account’s time-weighted or money-weighted return report and read its assumptions. Time-weighted returns are useful for evaluating the investment’s performance independent of your deposit timing; money-weighted returns reflect the actual timing of your cash flows. Do not compare one method with a benchmark calculated using another without understanding the difference.

Keep a short worksheet with the ticker, benchmark, dates, share quantities, dividends, fees, and return method. Save the benchmark methodology or fact sheet used, because index providers can change construction rules and data may be revised.

Revisit why you bought the stock

Write the original reason for buying in one or two sentences: for example, expected growth in a product line, durable pricing power, income, or exposure to a particular industry. Then compare that thesis with current public information. A price chart alone cannot tell you whether the business changed.

Separate company-specific problems from broad market moves

Investor.gov notes that a stock can fall because of company events, such as a faulty product, or because of political and market events. Compare the company’s result with its appropriate peers and benchmark, then identify the driver. If nearly every comparable company declined after an industry shock, the move may be broad. If this company lost customers, withdrew guidance, faced a product failure, or changed its financing, the issue may be specific to the business.

Use primary filings and disclosures

Public-company information is available through the SEC’s EDGAR database. Review the latest annual and quarterly reports, current reports, earnings releases, risk-factor updates, and material disclosures. Look for changes in revenue quality, margins, cash generation, debt, share issuance, competitive position, management outlook, and legal or regulatory exposure. Read management’s explanations, but test them against the financial statements and notes.

A filing review can show that the original thesis is intact, weakened, or invalidated. It cannot prove that the share price will recover. Avoid turning one optimistic forecast or one disappointing quarter into certainty about the next price move.

Check whether the position still fits your portfolio

Even a sound business can be unsuitable at its current weight. Investor.gov describes diversification as avoiding reliance on a single holding, while also warning that a narrowly focused fund is not automatically diversified.

Measure concentration

Calculate the stock’s percentage of your investable assets and of the account where it is held. Include exposure through funds, employer plans, options, or other securities tied to the same company or industry. A falling stock may shrink its weight; adding shares may increase concentration even if the purchase feels like a bargain.

Compare the position with your intended allocation

Write down the allocation you intended when you bought the stock: for example, a limited satellite position around a diversified core. If the position has drifted materially, rebalancing can restore the intended risk level. Rebalancing is an allocation decision, not an automatic instruction to sell whichever asset recently performed best or buy whichever performed worst.

Reassess risk tolerance

Ask how you would react to another substantial decline, not merely how you feel after the decline already occurred. Risk tolerance includes both financial capacity for loss and your ability to remain invested without making an emergency decision. If the holding keeps you from following your plan, its size may be wrong even if the company outlook has not changed.

Match the decision to when you need the money

Investor.gov says goals five years or less may be poorly matched with risky investments because you might have to sell during a loss. That is general education, not a universal allocation rule. List the date and amount of each goal the account is expected to fund.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Near-term need: a volatile individual stock can create a forced-sale risk if the money is needed soon.
  • Longer-term goal: you may have more time for uncertainty, but time alone does not repair a broken business thesis or excessive concentration.
  • Changed circumstances: a job loss, new debt, health expense, or approaching tuition bill can change the appropriate risk even if the stock has not changed.

Keep emergency reserves and essential near-term spending separate from money that can remain invested through market declines. If your situation is complex, a qualified financial professional can help connect the position with your complete plan.

Before selling, estimate the transaction consequences

A sale can have costs beyond the visible share price. Review the account type, tax basis, holding period, commissions or other charges, and any restrictions. The SEC’s March 31, 2026 investor bulletin notes that account tax benefits differ and that investors should understand fees. Tax treatment varies by jurisdiction and circumstance; a tax professional can address questions about capital gains, losses, wash-sale rules, retirement accounts, and reporting.

Consider whether selling changes your diversification, cash reserve, or ability to meet a stated goal. Also decide what the proceeds would do. “Sell” is incomplete unless you know whether the money will remain in cash, move to a different security, or fund spending. A replacement investment has its own risks and costs.

Understand order execution

If you proceed with an order, read the broker’s current order descriptions. A limit order sets the maximum price you will pay when buying or the minimum price you will accept when selling, but it may not execute. A market order generally prioritizes execution over price certainty, subject to the broker’s terms and market conditions. Check the estimated proceeds, settlement information, and any account warnings before submitting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Decide what evidence would change your mind

Turn the review into explicit conditions rather than a prediction. Examples include a debt covenant breach, a permanent loss of a key customer, a product problem that management cannot address, or a revised allocation target. Also record what would support continuing to hold, such as evidence that the business thesis remains intact and the position is within its intended risk limit.

Do not use a lower share price as proof that the stock is cheaper. A stock can become less valuable as its outlook deteriorates, and a high-quality company can still be overpriced. “Averaging down” increases exposure; it should be considered only after a fresh thesis and portfolio review, not as an automatic response to a loss.

A practical review you can complete in one sitting

  1. Record the facts. List purchase dates, quantities, cost basis, dividends, fees, current value, and the exact period you are evaluating.
  2. Select a fair benchmark. Choose a comparable segment and investment type; document whether returns are price-only or total return.
  3. Recalculate consistently. Use identical dates and account for dividends, cash flows, expenses, and taxes where the data is available.
  4. Read current disclosures. Check EDGAR filings and company reports for changes to revenue, cash flow, debt, competition, guidance, products, and risks.
  5. Test the original thesis. Mark each premise as intact, uncertain, or contradicted by evidence.
  6. Review portfolio fit. Measure concentration, diversification, intended allocation, risk tolerance, and any exposure through funds or other accounts.
  7. Map the time horizon. Identify when the money is needed and whether a forced sale during a decline is plausible.
  8. Model a transaction. Estimate taxes, fees, account effects, and what you would do with the proceeds.
  9. Choose a rule-based action. Possible actions include holding, reducing to a target weight, selling, or waiting for more information; the appropriate choice depends on the evidence and your circumstances.
  10. Set a review date. Monitor the specific business and allocation conditions you wrote down instead of reacting to every daily price change.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using an unrelated index: a broad benchmark may not explain a specialized company’s risks.
  • Ignoring dividends and fees: gross price changes can differ from the return you actually received.
  • Cherry-picking dates: a short, favorable interval can disguise weak performance in other conditions.
  • Confusing a lower price with lower risk: deterioration in the business can make the investment riskier after a decline.
  • Trading to relieve discomfort: an emotional sale can create taxes and leave you without a plan for the proceeds.
  • Assuming a fund is diversified: a narrowly focused fund can still concentrate industry or company risk.
  • Treating a filing as a forecast: disclosures describe information available at a point in time, not a guaranteed future return.

When to seek professional help

Consider an adviser or tax professional when the position is a large share of your assets, tied to employer stock or complex compensation, held across multiple account types, or connected to a major tax decision. Check credentials, registration, services, and how the professional is paid. A professional can help apply general principles to your circumstances, but no one can guarantee that a stock will recover or eliminate investment risk.

Decision checklist

  • Have I compared the stock with a genuinely comparable benchmark?
  • Are the dates, dividends, fees, cash flows, and return methods consistent?
  • What does the latest company information say about the original thesis?
  • Is the weakness company-specific, industry-wide, or market-wide?
  • What percentage of my portfolio is exposed, directly or indirectly?
  • When will I need this money, and could I be forced to sell?
  • What taxes, fees, account rules, and execution risks would a sale create?
  • What specific evidence would make me change my decision?
