Start by checking whether you were entitled to the distribution, not simply whether its payable date has passed. Compare your trades and transfers with the issuer’s record date and the market’s applicable ex-dividend date. Then use the correct contact route: a broker or custodian for shares held in street name, or the issuer’s transfer agent for directly registered shares.
The process below is designed primarily for U.S.-listed securities. Dividend entitlement and settlement procedures can differ by country, exchange, security type and account registration, so confirm the dates and instructions in the issuer’s announcement and the rules of the market where the security trades.

Why a special dividend can be missing
A special dividend can fail to appear for several different reasons, and they require different fixes. You may not have been entitled to it because you bought on or after the applicable ex-dividend date. The payment may be moving through a broker or custodian and not yet be posted. A sale, transfer or account move may have triggered due-bill treatment. Or a check or electronic payment may have been sent to an outdated address or bank instruction.

The payable date is only one part of the analysis. The issuer sets a record date, while market rules determine the ex-dividend date. Investor.gov states, “If you purchase a stock on its ex-dividend date or after, you will not receive the next dividend payment.” That ordinary rule is not enough for every large special distribution: when a dividend is 25% or more of the stock’s value, Investor.gov says the ex-dividend date is deferred until one business day after the payment date. Always verify the event-specific dates rather than applying an ordinary-dividend calendar.

| Date or event | What it tells you | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Announcement date | The issuer describes the distribution and its terms. | Security, cash or stock form, per-share amount and all stated dates. |
| Record date | The issuer identifies holders on its records under the event’s rules. | Whether your position and settlement history meet the event terms. |
| Ex-dividend date | The market date that generally determines whether a purchase carries the next dividend. | Whether each purchase occurred before, on or after the applicable ex-date. |
| Payable date | The date the issuer scheduled the distribution to be paid. | Whether your intermediary has received and posted the funds. |
Stock distributions, unusually large cash distributions and other corporate actions can use different timing. A special-dividend notice may state an ex-date after both the record and payment dates. The issuer’s notice and the listing venue’s rules control.
Step 1: Confirm the exact event
Find the issuer’s announcement
Open the company’s dividend announcement or your broker’s corporate-action notice and record the exact security identifier, listing venue, distribution type, per-share amount, record date, payable date and ex-dividend date. Check whether the event is cash, stock, property or another form of distribution. A “special dividend” label by itself does not establish the timing or entitlement rules.
Apply the large-dividend rule carefully
For a distribution worth 25% or more of the stock’s value, Investor.gov describes a deferred ex-dividend date: one business day after the payment date. This rule can make a record-date-only reading misleading. Confirm that the threshold and timing apply to the particular event, and check any exchange notice or issuer amendment.

Use the date for the correct market
If the security trades on more than one venue, or if you hold an American depositary security or another instrument with its own settlement process, use the dates applicable to your listing and instrument. Do not infer a special dividend’s ex-date from a familiar calendar for ordinary cash dividends.

Step 2: Reconstruct your holdings around the dates
Review statements and confirmations
Pull the account statement covering the record and payable dates, plus trade confirmations for purchases and sales around the event. Write down the quantity held, the account in which it was held, trade dates, settlement dates when shown, and any transfer or journal entry. Keep copies rather than relying on a current position screen, which may no longer show a historical entitlement.
Test the ordinary entitlement scenario
If you bought before the applicable ex-dividend date, the position is generally entitled to the next dividend. A purchase on or after the ex-date generally is not. The special 25% rule can change that simple sequence, so compare your trades with the event-specific ex-date, not just the record date.
Check sales, transfers and account moves
A sale, broker-to-broker transfer, conversion or account closure around the event can leave the payment with a different intermediary. Note the old and new account numbers, the date the position left each account and the firms involved. Ask which intermediary received the issuer’s payment and how the trade was handled under any due-bill or corporate-action adjustment.
| Your record | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Trade confirmation | Shows when you agreed to buy or sell and the quantity. |
| Settlement or delivery record | Helps determine which intermediary carried the position under the event’s rules. |
| Account statement | Shows the account registration, position and any posted corporate-action entry. |
| Transfer or closure notice | Identifies where a pending payment may have been routed. |
Step 3: Identify who is responsible for payment
Your contact path depends on how the shares are registered.

| Holding method | First contact | Information to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Brokerage or custodian account (street name) | The broker or custodian shown on your statement. | Eligibility, eligible share count, amount received, posting status, withholding or reinvestment election, and any payment routed from a former institution. |
| Direct registration | The issuer’s named transfer agent. | Payment method, registered address or bank instructions, issuance date and replacement-payment process. |
| Paper certificate or other issuer-held registration | The issuer or its transfer agent identified in the issuer’s instructions. | Registration details, delivery address and whether a check or electronic payment was issued. |
Investor.gov explains that brokers maintain ownership records for street-name holdings and that broker disbursements can be delayed. For directly registered holdings, the issuer or transfer agent sends the payment using the holder’s instructions. CME Group’s investor FAQ likewise directs beneficial owners to their bank or broker and registered holders to the transfer agent for account-specific questions.
Step 4: Ask your broker or custodian to trace the payment
Use a secure channel
Sign in to the firm’s secure message center or call the corporate-actions or dividend department. Do not send full account credentials or identity documents through an unverified email address. Explain that you are requesting an entitlement and payment trace for a named special dividend.
Include the facts that let the firm investigate
- Issuer name, ticker and the exact security or class of shares.
- Announcement, record, ex-dividend and payable dates.
- Trade dates, quantities, settlement information and any transfer dates.
- The account identifier through the firm’s secure process and the statement showing the position.
- Whether you elected cash, reinvestment or another option, if the event offered one.
- Any former broker, custodian or closed account that may have held the shares.
Ask precise questions
- Was my account eligible under the event’s record and ex-date rules?
- What share quantity did you report as eligible?
- When did you receive the issuer or depository payment?
- What gross amount, deductions and net amount were recorded?
- Is the payment pending, rejected, held for an instruction review or already sent elsewhere?
- Was a due bill or other corporate-action adjustment applied to a sale or transfer?
- Can you provide the corporate-action record or payment trace number in writing?
A broker may need time to reconcile its ledger with a custodian or depository. Ask for a case number, the current status and the date by which it will update you. Investor.gov notes that slight broker disbursement delays are possible; that observation is not a promise of a universal posting schedule.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesStep 5: Contact the transfer agent for registered shares
Confirm the registered details
The transfer agent is named in the issuer’s investor-relations materials or corporate-action notice. Provide the registered holder name, security identifier, event dates and the reference number requested by the agent. Confirm the mailing address, bank instructions and payment preference on file. An address or bank change may require identity verification before a replacement can be issued.

Ask whether payment was issued
Request the issue date, delivery method, check number or electronic-payment reference, and the procedure for stopping and replacing a payment. Keep the agent’s case number and follow its written instructions. S&P Global’s investor FAQ gives an issuer-specific example of allowing a few days for mail delivery before reporting a missing check. That example is not a universal waiting period; follow the particular issuer’s directions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When a sale or transfer creates a due-bill question
Nasdaq’s equity rules describe due-bill treatment for certain distributions. In practical terms, a transaction around the ex-date may carry an obligation to pass the distribution to the party entitled under the event’s terms, rather than leaving the payment with the account that happens to show the shares later.
Give the broker both sides of the transaction: who held the shares before the sale or transfer, when delivery occurred, and which firm received the issuer’s funds. Ask the firm to identify the applicable ex-date and due-bill treatment for this event. Nasdaq’s rulebook does not determine an individual account’s result without the issuer’s announcement and your trade records.

If the records still do not reconcile
Escalate inside the firm first
Ask the broker, custodian or transfer agent to open a formal corporate-action or payment investigation. Request a written explanation identifying the eligibility decision, payment path and any missing documentation. If a former institution is involved, ask the current firm to tell you whether it has sent an inter-firm inquiry or whether you must contact the former firm directly.

Use the applicable complaint route
If the investigation does not resolve the discrepancy, obtain the firm’s formal complaint procedure and the deadlines that apply to your account agreement. There is no single escalation deadline or regulator route that covers every broker, security, account type and country. Before filing a complaint, identify the regulator or dispute channel applicable to the firm and the market where the security trades, and preserve your case numbers and correspondence.
Common mistakes that delay a resolution
- Checking only the payable date: entitlement usually turns on the applicable ex-date and the event’s terms.
- Assuming every special dividend follows ordinary timing: a distribution at or above 25% of stock value can have a deferred ex-date, and stock distributions may follow different procedures.
- Contacting the wrong party: a broker handles the account ledger for street-name holdings; a transfer agent handles directly registered holdings.
- Using only a current position screen: historical statements and confirmations are needed to reconstruct ownership around the event.
- Ignoring transfers or sales: due bills and payment routing can shift responsibility between intermediaries.
- Requesting a replacement before checking delivery details: confirm whether a check or electronic payment was issued and where it was sent.
- Assuming a quoted delay is universal: broker posting times and issuer mail guidance vary by firm and event.
Records checklist for your case
Assemble one folder containing:
- The issuer’s announcement or corporate-action notice.
- The security identifier, listing venue and distribution form.
- Record, ex-dividend and payable dates, including any amended date.
- Trade confirmations and settlement or delivery records around the event.
- Statements showing the position and account registration.
- Transfer, journal, closure or broker-change documents.
- Your messages, call dates, names or departments, case numbers and written responses.
Send only the documents the firm requests through its secure channel. This record lets the intermediary compare the issuer’s entitlement file, its own ledger and any payment or due-bill entry without asking you to recreate the timeline repeatedly.
What a complete answer should establish
By the end of the investigation, the responsible firm should be able to state whether you were entitled under the event’s dates and terms, how many shares qualified, which intermediary received the payment, whether the amount was posted or routed elsewhere, and what action is required if delivery failed. If the firm cannot reconcile those points, request the formal complaint process for the specific account and jurisdiction rather than assuming that a missing credit will correct itself.
