If one stock now dominates your investments, first measure your total exposure—including the same company held inside funds and employer plans—then compare that risk with your goals, time horizon and ability to tolerate losses. If the position no longer fits, common responses are selling some shares, directing new money elsewhere and rebalancing into genuinely diversified holdings. Before trading, check cost basis, taxes, liquidity and any employment-related trading restrictions.
There is no regulator-approved percentage that automatically makes a position “too large.” The right decision depends on what the portfolio must fund and how much of your income, benefits and other assets already depend on the same company.

Why one oversized holding is a concentration risk
Concentration risk is the possibility that losses are amplified because a large share of your wealth depends on one investment, asset class or market segment. It can be deliberate, such as choosing to make a high-conviction investment, or accidental, when an employer stock or a fast-rising holding grows faster than everything else. FINRA explains the risk and the need to look beyond the securities listed on a statement in “Concentrate on Concentration Risk” (June 15, 2022).
A single company can suffer an earnings miss, product failure, regulatory action, lawsuit, cyber incident or management change while the rest of the market is healthy. If your salary, bonus, pension, stock options or health benefits also come from that company, a share-price decline could affect both your investments and your household cash flow. Diversifying the investment does not remove every market risk, but it reduces dependence on one issuer’s fortunes.

Step 1: Measure the exposure you actually have
Start with a household-level inventory rather than a single brokerage account. Record the current market value of each holding and calculate the company’s direct and indirect share of the total. Include taxable accounts, IRAs, workplace retirement plans, restricted stock, vested and unvested awards where relevant, and cash that is earmarked for the same employer’s shares.
Look through funds and linked investments
Mutual funds and exchange-traded funds are not automatically diversified. A sector, country or theme fund may hold a small number of companies, and a broad-market fund may still own the stock you already hold directly. Obtain the fund’s current holdings and add the overlapping position to your exposure estimate. FINRA specifically recommends checking fund holdings for overlap and narrow mandates.
Also check securities whose value is linked to the company, such as employee stock units, options, or other contractual interests. An instrument that is not yet a common share can still create future concentration or a cash-flow decision when it vests or expires.
Include liquidity in the measurement
Market value is only part of the picture. Ask how quickly each position can be sold, whether a market is thin, and whether an employer plan or award agreement limits transfers. A position that appears modest on paper may be difficult to reduce when you need the money; a highly liquid position may be easier to trim in stages.

The cited regulator guidance does not set a universal 5%, 10% or other cutoff for a “too large” holding. Treat any percentage you calculate as an input to a personal decision, not a rule supplied by FINRA or another regulator.
Step 2: Match the risk to your plan
Investor.gov says asset allocation should reflect your investment time horizon and risk tolerance. Apply those concepts to the concentrated position by answering four practical questions:
- What must this portfolio pay for? Identify near-term bills, a home purchase, education, retirement income or a safety reserve. Money needed soon generally has less capacity for a severe single-stock drawdown than money with a long horizon.
- When will you need it? A date for a planned withdrawal, an approaching retirement or an expected career change can make the timing of risk more important than a long-run return thesis.
- How large a loss could you withstand? Consider both the percentage decline and the dollar amount, including whether a loss would force you to sell other assets or borrow.
- What else is tied to the company? Add employment income, commissions, unvested awards, pensions, insurance or a spouse’s job. These exposures may make the stock riskier for your household than its portfolio percentage suggests.
Write down the role you want the holding to play—such as a long-term investment, a future spending source or a speculative position. If its current size is accidental, a deliberate reduction may restore the portfolio’s intended balance. If you keep it, document why and what event would cause you to review that choice.

Sell part of the position and diversify the proceeds
A partial sale is the most direct way to lower issuer exposure. You can direct the proceeds to investments that fill gaps in your intended allocation, such as diversified stock and bond funds or cash reserves appropriate to your plan. Selling can realize a capital gain or loss, so identify the tax lots and their cost basis before entering an order. A staged sale may help you manage timing and liquidity, but it is not guaranteed to reduce taxes or produce a better return than selling at once.
Rebalance toward an intended allocation
Rebalancing means bringing holdings back toward an allocation you chose for your objectives. Investor.gov describes two broad methods: review the portfolio periodically, or act when an asset moves beyond a pre-set deviation from its target. Neither source establishes a universal review schedule or a target percentage for one company. Choose a method you can follow consistently, account for trading costs and taxes, and record the rule so a market surge does not silently change your risk.
Use diversified funds carefully
Funds can make it easier to spread money among many securities, but read the mandate, top holdings and sector weights. A fund labeled broad or diversified may still have a meaningful position in the same company, so subtract the overlap when estimating your remaining exposure. A narrow technology, energy or thematic fund may simply replace one concentration with another.
Fund distributions also affect taxes. The IRS explains that mutual funds can distribute capital gains to shareholders, and those distributions may be taxable even when you did not sell your fund shares; see IRS guidance on mutual-fund costs and distributions.

Direct shares to a charitable vehicle when giving is already a goal
If charitable giving is part of your plan, investigate whether contributing appreciated shares to a donor-advised fund fits your intentions. The IRS states that the sponsoring organization owns and controls contributed assets; the donor may retain advisory privileges over investments or grants but does not continue to own the stock personally. Read the sponsor’s eligibility and administrative terms, and obtain tax advice about your specific contribution. A charitable vehicle should not be adopted solely as a way to avoid an investment decision.
Use professional help for constraints you cannot model
A fiduciary financial planner, tax professional or both can help coordinate tax lots, employer restrictions, liquidity needs and a target allocation. Ask how the professional is paid, what credentials apply and whether recommendations are limited by an employer plan or product menu. FINRA encourages investors worried about overconcentration to discuss the situation with a financial professional.
| Choice | How directly it lowers single-stock exposure | Tax and reporting considerations | Liquidity and complexity | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sell some shares and reinvest | Direct reduction immediately after execution | Gain or loss may be reportable; confirm lots and basis | Usually liquid for exchange-listed shares; simple order, but execution and timing matter | The holding no longer matches your risk or spending plan |
| Rebalance with a written rule | Reduces the position when it exceeds your chosen band | Repeated sales can create taxable events | Requires monitoring and recordkeeping | You want a repeatable process rather than a one-time reaction |
| Buy diversified funds | Can spread new money, but overlap may leave exposure high | Fund distributions can be taxable; review account type | Generally easy to trade; fund research is required | You need broad exposure that complements existing holdings |
| Contribute shares to a donor-advised fund | Removes contributed shares from personal ownership | Tax treatment and eligibility are fact-specific; sponsoring organization controls assets | Irrevocable contribution; grants are recommended later under sponsor rules | Charitable giving is already a genuine objective |
| Seek professional advice | Depends on the plan implemented | Can coordinate reporting and tax-lot decisions | Adds fees and requires checking credentials and conflicts | Employer awards, large gains, restrictions or several account types complicate the choice |
Understand U.S. tax mechanics before selling
For U.S. investors, selling securities generally creates a reportable capital gain or loss. IRS Topic no. 429 explains that sales are generally reported on Schedule D and, when required, Form 8949, and points investors to capital-loss limitations and wash-sale rules. Read the current instructions at IRS Topic no. 429 and keep purchase confirmations, reinvestment records, option information and employer-plan statements.

Different purchases of the same stock can have different bases and holding periods. Confirm which lots your broker will sell, whether you can specify lots, and how the selection affects short- versus long-term treatment under current tax law. Plan for losses and wash-sale complications
A loss may be subject to annual deduction limits and may interact with purchases of substantially identical securities. The IRS material flags wash-sale rules; review the current rule with a tax professional, especially if you buy the stock in another account, through an automatic plan or through an employee benefit.
Remember that fund sales are not the only taxable event
A mutual fund can pass through capital-gain distributions even if you never sell your fund shares. Check distribution estimates and the account’s tax status before adding a fund to replace the concentrated holding.
Check trading windows, liquidity and execution
Employees and insiders may face blackout periods, pre-clearance requirements, volume limits or a written trading plan. Read the employer’s current policy and award documents; do not trade on confidential information. Restricted shares may have transfer limits or tax withholding at vesting. A financial professional can coordinate a sale with these constraints, but cannot remove the legal restrictions.

For a freely tradable stock, decide whether a market, limit or scheduled order is appropriate for your circumstances and understand that prices can move between decisions and execution. For a thinly traded security, a large order may move the price. Liquidity needs also argue for retaining an emergency reserve outside the concentrated position.
Traps that do not solve concentration
- Applying a magic threshold: No cited regulator source declares that one percentage works for every investor. A household with company-linked income may need a different tolerance from a household with no such link.
- Buying any ETF or mutual fund: A narrow fund or a broad fund with a large overlapping position may leave the same exposure in place. Inspect holdings and update the calculation.
- Using leveraged or inverse single-stock ETFs as a hedge: The SEC warns that these products retain single-company exposure and can amplify movements in the underlying stock. They are not issuer diversification. See the SEC’s July 8, 2022 investor statement at Single-Stock ETFs.
- Waiting for a perfect price: Delaying a decision leaves the concentration unchanged and exposes you to further company-specific moves. If you cannot sell immediately because of taxes or restrictions, document the reason and a review date rather than treating inaction as diversification.
- Assuming a tax benefit is guaranteed: Deferral strategies, charitable deductions and specialized arrangements have eligibility requirements and fact-specific outcomes. The available guidance does not establish the suitability or tax treatment of collars, exchange funds or other complex products.
A practical implementation checklist
- Build the exposure sheet. List every account, direct shareholding, fund holding, award and company-linked income source. Record market value, basis, holding period, liquidity and restrictions.
- Set the purpose and time horizon. Note upcoming withdrawals, emergency needs, retirement timing and the loss you could tolerate without changing your plan.
- Choose a response. Decide whether to sell a portion, redirect new contributions, rebalance under a written deviation rule, investigate a charitable transfer or obtain professional advice.
- Run the tax and restriction check. Confirm lots, estimated gains or losses, wash-sale implications, fund distributions, trading windows and withholding before placing an order.
- Implement and document. Record the order, the allocation you are targeting and why the decision fits your goals. Keep statements and confirmations.
- Review after meaningful changes. Revisit the calculation when the stock price, your employment, a vesting event, a major withdrawal or your risk tolerance changes. Use the review method you selected rather than reacting to headlines.
The bottom line for a concentrated stock position
Do not begin with a universal percentage or an automatic sell order. Begin with a complete exposure measurement, including fund overlap and company-linked income, then test the risk against your goals, horizon, liquidity and tolerance for loss. If the position no longer fits, selling part of it and reinvesting in appropriately diversified holdings is the clearest risk-reduction route, subject to taxes and restrictions. Rebalancing rules, careful fund selection, charitable transfers that match genuine giving plans and qualified professional advice can support that decision, while leveraged single-stock products and unexamined fund overlap cannot substitute for diversification.
