What to do if a share falls sharply after you buy it

A sharp fall is a reason to reassess, not an automatic signal to sell, hold or buy more. The percentage loss alone cannot tell you which action is suitable. First verify that the move is real, then compare the company’s current facts with your original reason for buying, your time horizon, cash needs, risk tolerance and the position’s size in your portfolio.

This is general information, not individualized financial or tax advice. If the decision could affect money you need soon, or you cannot judge the risks objectively, a qualified financial professional can help you apply the analysis to your circumstances.

Start with a fact check before placing any order

Fear and fast-moving headlines can make a normal quote display look like a permanent loss. Work through these checks in order.

Confirm the ticker, price and trading session

Check that you are looking at the correct company and share class, and compare the quoted price with a second reliable market-data source. Note whether the market is open, whether the quote is delayed, and whether the apparent drop occurred outside regular trading hours. A stale quote, an incorrect ticker or a data-feed error can mimic a collapse.

Look for corporate actions and market-wide moves

Review the company’s investor-relations announcements and your broker’s corporate-action notices for events such as a stock split, dividend adjustment, rights issue, merger, trading halt or other change that can alter the displayed price. Also check whether the whole sector or market moved. These checks do not explain every decline, but they prevent you from making a decision on a mistaken price or an incomplete timeline.

Separate verified facts from commentary

Give more weight to filed results, formal company announcements and clearly identified market data than to social-media predictions or anonymous posts. Investor.gov advises investors to understand why they are buying or selling and the risks of the investment; write down the evidence you are relying on before acting: Online Investing.

Reconstruct the reason you bought the share

Write the original investment thesis in one or two sentences. It might have involved expected earnings growth, a dividend, a turnaround, a valuation judgment or a long-term ownership goal. Then ask whether the facts supporting that thesis are intact, weakened or disproved.

What may count as a material change

  • Results, guidance, cash flow or debt have changed in a way that affects the original expectation.
  • A product, regulation, lawsuit, competitor or management change alters the company’s prospects.
  • The share price moved, but the underlying business evidence has not changed.
  • Your own objective changed: you now need the money earlier, or the position has become too large for you to tolerate comfortably.

Do not treat your purchase price as proof of what the share is worth today. It is a historical transaction price, not a guarantee that the market will return to it. A lower price can reflect either an attractive valuation or a permanently weaker business; the drop itself cannot distinguish between those possibilities.

Match the decision to your finances and risk capacity

The same decline can be manageable for one investor and dangerous for another. The SEC’s planning guidance emphasizes objectives, time horizon, current financial situation and willingness to bear losses before making an investing decision: Things to Consider Before You Make Investing Decisions.

Ask when you will need the money

If the cash is needed for rent, tuition, a deposit, debt repayment or another near-term obligation, a volatile individual share may not fit that deadline. Selling or reducing the position can be a liquidity decision rather than a judgment about the company. If the money is genuinely long term, you may have more time to investigate the business and withstand further price movement, but time does not remove the possibility of a permanent loss.

Distinguish willingness from ability to lose

Risk tolerance is both emotional and financial. You may feel comfortable with volatility yet lack enough emergency savings to absorb a large loss, or you may have the financial capacity to hold but find the uncertainty unacceptable. Consider the largest additional loss you could withstand without changing essential plans, and whether you could remain rational if the share fell again.

Measure the position inside the whole portfolio

A single holding can become a disproportionate risk after other assets fall, after you add shares, or simply because the company is volatile. List the current value of every major holding and calculate what percentage the share represents. Also look for indirect concentration: several companies may depend on the same industry, country, currency or economic factor.

Diversification spreads exposure among investments, while rebalancing brings a portfolio back toward a chosen allocation. Investor.gov notes that rebalancing can involve fees and tax consequences, so include those costs in the decision: Beginners’ Guide to Asset Allocation, Diversification, and Rebalancing.

When concentration changes the answer

  • A position that is small relative to your portfolio may be easier to hold while you investigate, provided the money is not needed soon.
  • A position that dominates your portfolio can justify reducing exposure even if you still like the company, because the issue is risk concentration rather than a forecast of next week’s price.
  • Rebalancing can be gradual or immediate, but the plan should specify the target allocation and the costs of reaching it.

Compare selling, holding and adding without using a buy-the-dip rule

Use the same questions for each option: What changed in the investment facts? When will you need the money? How large is the position? Can you and will you absorb another loss? What execution, transaction and possible tax costs apply?

Choice Questions it must answer Main risks to examine
Sell all or part now Has the thesis been broken, or is the position too risky or illiquid for your circumstances? You may lock in a loss, miss a later recovery, or incur transaction and tax consequences.
Hold Can you explain why the original thesis still stands and wait through the relevant time horizon? The business may deteriorate further, and holding may leave the portfolio too concentrated.
Add shares Would you buy this company today at its current price if you did not already own it, and does the larger position fit your allocation? A lower price is not evidence of value; adding increases exposure if the decline continues.

Adding solely to reduce your average purchase price is an accounting result, not a reason that the investment will recover. If you cannot state the new evidence that supports a larger position, pause rather than averaging down automatically.

Market orders

A market order generally prioritizes execution, but it does not guarantee the execution price. In a rapidly moving or thinly traded share, the fill can differ from the quote you saw. Investor.gov explains the basic trade-off in Types of Orders.

Limit orders

A limit order sets the highest price you will pay for a purchase or the lowest price you will accept for a sale. It can protect the price boundary, but it may not execute if the market never reaches that level. A limit order that remains unfilled is still an exposure decision: you continue to own the share while waiting.

Stop orders

A stop order, often called a stop-loss order, becomes a market order when the stop price is reached. The SEC’s bulletin, updated August 18, 2026, states: “The stop price is not the guaranteed execution price for a stop order.” In a fast market, execution may be significantly away from the trigger: Stop, Stop-Limit, and Trailing Stop Orders – Investor Bulletin.

Stop-limit orders

A stop-limit order becomes a limit order after its stop price is triggered. It gives you more control over the acceptable execution price, but the order can fail to execute if the market moves past your limit. That may leave you holding the share during a further decline.

Confirm what happened after clicking submit

Check the broker’s order-status page for the symbol, side, quantity, order type, trigger or limit price, time-in-force and whether the order is open, partially filled, filled or canceled. Do not assume that an online order executed, or that a cancellation succeeded, until the brokerage confirms it. Investor.gov’s online-trading guidance covers these verification steps: Online Investing.

Account for costs and tax effects before rebalancing

Changing the position can create commissions or other transaction charges, bid-ask spread costs and, depending on the account and jurisdiction, tax consequences. A sale at a loss may have rules affecting how that loss can be used; a sale at a gain may create a taxable event. The exact treatment depends on your country, account type, holding period and personal tax situation. Check your broker’s fee schedule and consult a tax professional for advice that applies to you rather than assuming that a trade is cost-free.

Use a written decision process when emotions are high

  1. Record the facts. Note the verified price, date and time, the size of the move, relevant company announcements and whether the broader market moved.
  2. State the thesis. Write why you bought, what evidence would disprove that reason and whether any such evidence exists now.
  3. Set the constraint. Record the money’s required date, the maximum loss you can absorb and the position percentage you are willing to hold.
  4. Choose a response. Sell, hold or add only if the choice follows from the facts and constraints, not from the desire to undo an uncomfortable paper loss.
  5. Define a review date. Identify the next company report, filing or objective milestone that will cause you to reassess. Avoid inventing a precise price target that the available evidence cannot justify.

This process also creates a record of what would make you change course. It is more reliable than checking the quote repeatedly and reacting to each intraday move.

Know when the situation is outside a do-it-yourself decision

Consider individualized advice if the holding is a large share of your net worth, the money is needed for a major near-term obligation, the account has complex tax consequences, or you cannot determine whether the company’s facts have changed. A qualified financial professional can help evaluate your objectives, risk capacity, diversification and tax questions. No professional can guarantee that a particular sell, hold or buy decision will produce a profit.

Ordinary ownership is also different from short selling. A short seller borrows shares and can face obligations and losses that do not apply in the same way to someone who simply owns a share. Investor.gov describes those distinct mechanics in An Introduction to Short Sales.

A practical final check before you act

  • Is the quote for the correct security, and have you checked market hours and corporate-action notices?
  • Can you state the original reason for buying in a sentence?
  • What verified evidence supports or contradicts that reason now?
  • When will you need the money, and how much further loss could you absorb?
  • What percentage of your portfolio is this holding, including related exposures?
  • Which order type matches your priority, and what could happen if it does not fill?
  • Have you checked fees, spreads and possible tax consequences?
  • Will you verify the order status with the broker after submission?

Former SEC Office of Investor Education and Assistance Director Lori Schock wrote, “One of the best ways to manage the impact of market volatility on your portfolio—whether you are an experienced investor or just starting out—is to create and stick with a risk-appropriate, diversified investment plan.” The Investor.gov page carrying that quotation says it is no longer being updated and may contain out-of-date information, so treat it as attributed background rather than a current SEC recommendation: Don’t Panic, Plan It!
