Do not stop paying an installment just because a merchant says it issued a refund. A merchant refund and cancellation of an EMI booking are separate events. First identify whether the purchase used a credit-card merchant EMI or a separate debit-card or consumer-durable loan. Then verify the refund amount, timing and reference, ask the issuer or lender how it was applied, and obtain a written answer about the remaining principal, interest, tax and installment schedule. If a card issuer does not resolve a formal complaint within 30 days, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) says you may approach the RBI Ombudsman under the Integrated Ombudsman Scheme.
Start by identifying the financing product
The correct remedy depends on who financed the purchase. “No-cost EMI” is a marketing description, not a single legal product.

Credit-card merchant EMI
The card issuer converts a card purchase into an installment plan, usually after the merchant submits the transaction for conversion. RBI’s card rules and your card issuer’s EMI terms govern the refund and cancellation process. The merchant may send money back to the card account without automatically closing the EMI plan.
Separate debit-card or consumer-durable loan
A debit-card checkout, point-of-sale finance arrangement or consumer-durable loan may create a separate loan account with a bank or non-bank lender. The refund can reach the payment account while the loan agreement remains active. RBI’s cited refund treatment concerns credit cards; for a distinct loan, use the lender’s agreement, foreclosure rules and grievance channel. Do not assume a credit-card rule or another issuer’s cancellation promise applies.

Why a refund may not remove the installments
A refund reverses money paid to the card or payment account. An EMI plan is a separate booking that schedules principal and financing charges over time. Systems may post the credit first and leave the schedule visible until the issuer matches the refund to the exact converted transaction. A partial refund may also reduce the economic value of the purchase without meeting the issuer’s conditions for cancelling the plan.
RBI’s March 7, 2024 card amendment requires issuers to show, before conversion, the principal, interest and upfront discount offered to make an EMI “no cost.” Those components must also appear separately on the card statement. Therefore, an account credit by itself does not prove that principal, interest and the EMI booking have all been reversed.
Collect the evidence before contacting anyone
Create one file containing the records below. Keep screenshots and PDF statements in their original form, and note the date and time of every call.
- Order confirmation and cancellation confirmation.
- Merchant email or message confirming the refund, including amount, date, payment route and refund reference or retrieval number.
- Original transaction amount, transaction date, merchant name and the date the EMI was booked.
- EMI conversion confirmation, schedule and any disclosure showing principal, interest, tax or upfront discount.
- Card or loan statements showing the refund as pending or posted, every installment still listed, and the current payment due.
- Proof of any payment already made after the refund, including the payment date and amount.
Mark whether the refund is full or partial. Also mark whether it is still pending, posted as a credit, or merely promised by the merchant. A refund reference is not the same as proof that the issuer has received and applied the money.

Use this sequence to resolve a credit-card EMI refund
1. Ask the merchant for a complete refund confirmation
Request written confirmation of the exact amount, the date it was initiated, the route used (the card or another method), and the refund reference. If the order had multiple items, ask which item and amount were refunded. A merchant may have refunded only one item or a deposit, leaving the converted transaction partly outstanding.
Ask the merchant to confirm whether it sent a full reversal of the original transaction or a partial credit. Do not accept “the refund is processed” without an amount and reference that the issuer can trace.
2. Contact the card issuer’s EMI or card-servicing team
Use the number or secure message channel on the card statement, not only the merchant’s help desk. Provide the refund reference and ask for a written response to each question:
- Has the refund reached the card account, and on what posting date?
- How was the credit applied: to the EMI principal, the current statement, fees or another balance?
- Has the EMI booking itself been cancelled, or will installments continue?
- What principal, interest, tax and other amount remains due, and on which dates?
- What action, if any, must you request separately to close or foreclose the plan?
Record the case number, the agent’s name or identifier and the promised response date. Ask for the answer by email or secure message so you can prove what the issuer decided.

3. Reconcile the next statement
Compare the statement’s refund credit with the EMI schedule. Check whether the credit is shown separately from the installment and whether interest, tax or foreclosure charges remain. Continue to monitor the “minimum amount due” and total amount due; a visible EMI line is not enough to determine what you must pay.
Refund timing changes the card payment treatment
RBI’s FAQ distinguishes a refund received before payment from one received after the cardholder has already paid. The practical result is that a refund may reduce the amount currently payable without deleting every line in the EMI schedule.
| Situation | What RBI’s credit-card FAQ describes | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Refund credited before the payment due date and the bill has not been paid | The refund is adjusted against the payment due; you owe the remaining outstanding after subtracting the refund. | Recalculate the amount due from the statement and obtain the issuer’s written figure. Do not pay twice, but do not ignore an amount still shown as due. |
| Refund arrives after you already paid the dues | The issuer must seek your explicit consent to adjust the refund. If there is no consent or response, the stated rule provides for credit to your bank account. | Tell the issuer whether you consent to an adjustment. You may request that the refund be credited to your bank account for an already-paid transaction. |
| Refund is pending or cannot be matched | No universal processing time is established across issuers. | Give the issuer the merchant reference, ask for a trace, and obtain a case number rather than relying on a verbal estimate. |
These provisions address credit cards. They do not create a universal deadline or automatic cancellation rule for every card issuer, debit-card finance product or consumer loan.

Full and partial refunds are not treated the same
Full refund
A full refund can support cancellation, but only if the issuer’s terms and transaction matching conditions are met. Ask the issuer to state explicitly whether it cancelled the EMI booking and to show the resulting zero balance or revised schedule.
Rank #4
Partial refund
Do not expect a partial refund to cancel the plan automatically. For example, SBI Card’s published terms say a partial refund does not affect its EMI booking. Those are SBI Card’s contractual terms, not an RBI rule and not a general standard for other issuers. The remaining installments may continue even though the merchant has returned money for one item or part of the order.
SBI Card’s issuer-specific example
SBI Card’s terms describe automatic cancellation for a qualifying single full refund received within 45 days, with matching refund information. The same terms say automatic cancellation does not apply when a full refund reaches the card before the EMI booking. The 45-day condition is an issuer-specific contractual condition, not a universal service-level deadline; the publication date of the accessed terms is not stated. If your card is not SBI Card, read your own issuer’s current EMI terms instead of borrowing these conditions.

If the financing created a loan account, ask the lender whether the merchant refund was sent to the lender, your bank account or the payment processor. Request a transaction-level allocation showing how the refund changes principal, interest and any fees. Ask whether the agreement requires a separate cancellation, prepayment or foreclosure request and whether a written no-dues certificate will be issued.
Keep paying according to the loan agreement unless the lender confirms in writing that a payment is not required. A missed auto-debit can create late charges or credit-report consequences even while a refund dispute is open. If a debit has to be stopped, use the lender’s documented mandate-cancellation or payment-change procedure and obtain confirmation; do not rely solely on a merchant promise.

Escalate when the issuer does not fix the account
File a formal complaint with the issuer
Use the issuer’s official grievance or nodal-officer channel. Include the transaction and EMI details, refund reference, statement dates, the remedy you want and copies of prior correspondence. State whether you are requesting EMI cancellation, correction of the outstanding amount, bank-account credit or a written explanation of why the plan remains active.
Save the complaint number, submission date, acknowledgment and every response. The 30-day period is measured from the date you lodged the complaint, not from the merchant’s refund date or your first informal call.
Approach the RBI Ombudsman after the applicable 30-day period
RBI’s March 7, 2024 amendment says: “If a complainant does not get satisfactory response from the card-issuer within a maximum period of 30 days from the date of lodging the complaint, he/she will have the option to approach the Office of the RBI Ombudsman under Integrated Ombudsman Scheme for redressal of his/her grievance/s.” Use the RBI’s currently applicable Ombudsman process and eligibility requirements when filing. Attach the issuer complaint acknowledgment, the refund evidence, statements and the response or proof that no satisfactory response arrived.

Payment and statement pitfalls to avoid
- Do not stop payment merely because the merchant issued a refund. Confirm the amount due and the EMI status with the issuer or lender.
- Do not treat a posted credit as a cancelled plan. Require a revised schedule or written cancellation confirmation.
- Do not use another issuer’s deadline. A 45-day full-refund condition in one issuer’s terms cannot be applied to every card.
- Do not overlook partial refunds. Match each refunded item and amount to the original converted transaction.
- Do not pay twice. If RBI’s timing rule means the refund reduces the current amount due, ask the issuer for the exact remaining figure before making an additional payment.
- Do not rely on a phone promise. Keep a case number and written response, especially before escalating.
What a resolved account should show
For a fully refunded credit-card purchase, ask for confirmation that the refund is posted, the EMI booking is cancelled or otherwise settled, and no future installment, interest or tax remains for that transaction. For a partial refund, the written schedule should identify the remaining principal and charges. For a separate loan, request the lender’s updated outstanding statement and, when applicable, a closure or no-dues document. Continue checking subsequent statements until the promised correction appears.
