If a NEFT, RTGS or IMPS transfer fails after your bank branch changes, first establish whether your account was debited and whether the beneficiary received the money. Then contact the originating bank through an official, secure channel with the transaction reference or UTR, date, amount, both branch details and the beneficiary information. Ask the bank to trace the payment and state clearly whether it is pending, credited, rejected or returned. Confirm the current IFSC before attempting another payment, and do not send a duplicate while the first transaction’s status is uncertain.
A branch move can create an identifier or routing issue that needs checking, but Reserve Bank of India (RBI) rules do not say that changing branches automatically causes a failed payment or alters the normal NEFT, RTGS or IMPS timelines. The bank must determine what happened to your particular transaction.

Start with a two-minute status check
Check the debit, not just the notification
Look at the account statement or transaction history for the sending account. A failed-looking screen, an interrupted SMS or a mobile-app error does not by itself prove that money left the account. Record whether the entry is absent, marked pending, debited, reversed or refunded.
Ask the beneficiary to check the receiving account directly, rather than relying only on an SMS. A credit can arrive even when the sender sees an error. If both sides show no credit and your account was debited, treat the payment as an unresolved failed transaction until the originating bank confirms its status.

Do not create a duplicate payment
Sending the same amount again before the first transfer is traced can result in two successful credits. Wait for the bank to confirm that the original payment was rejected and returned, or otherwise resolved. This is practical protection against a duplicate, not a special RBI rule for branch changes.
Collect the details the bank needs
- Transaction reference or UTR, including the 22-character UTR used for RTGS;
- Transaction date and amount;
- Sender and beneficiary names;
- Sender and beneficiary bank and branch names;
- Sender and beneficiary IFSCs and the beneficiary account details;
- The exact error message, notification or screen status; and
- Any statement entry showing the debit, reversal or refund.
Share these details only through the bank’s authenticated app, internet-banking message facility, branch or official call centre. Never post a full account number, OTP, PIN or login credential in a public forum or an unsecured message.
How a branch change can affect routing
IFSC is the key NEFT branch identifier
RBI describes the IFSC as the identifier used to route a NEFT payment to a bank branch. A branch relocation, merger or internal transfer may leave an old IFSC accepted for a period, replace it, or require the bank to map it to a successor branch. The customer cannot safely infer which situation applies. Confirm the current IFSC with the bank and ask whether the old code remains valid for the beneficiary’s account. RBI’s NEFT FAQ explains the routing role of the IFSC and the handling of uncredited payments: RBI NEFT FAQ.

RTGS has an additional branch-eligibility check
For RTGS, both the sending and receiving branches must be RTGS-enabled. A branch change can therefore make it important to verify that the new branch participates in RTGS, but the bank must confirm the actual reason for a failure. RBI also says RTGS provides positive confirmation through the remitting bank; ask for that confirmation or its absence when you open the trace.

What the bank must establish
Ask the originating bank to identify the payment’s last recorded point: accepted by the bank, sent to the payment system, received by the beneficiary bank, credited, rejected, or returned. The bank should also tell you whether a return has already been initiated, the expected resolution date, and whether compensation is due under the applicable payment rail.
NEFT: what the failed-payment rule means
Use the batch-settlement clock
NEFT works through batches. RBI says the beneficiary should be credited, or an uncredited payment should be returned, within two hours after the relevant batch settles. The clock starts at batch settlement, not necessarily when you pressed “send.” If that period is missed, the bank owes interest at the current RBI LAF repo rate plus two percentage points until the credit or refund, without waiting for you to submit a separate compensation claim. The rule is set out in the RBI NEFT FAQ.
Ask for a return trace
Give the bank the transaction reference, date, amount, sender and beneficiary IFSCs, and the beneficiary account details. Ask whether the receiving bank rejected the account or branch identifier, whether the funds are in a suspense or exception queue, and when the return message was sent. RBI guidance says remitters should be informed of failed or returned NEFT transactions and that funds should be credited or returned at the earliest; see the RBI customer-service circular.

Do not assume an old IFSC is permanently invalid
An old code may be closed, redirected or still mapped during a transition. Only the bank can confirm the mapping for the date of your payment. If the bank tells you to submit a fresh NEFT after the original is returned, verify the current IFSC in the bank’s own records before resending.

RTGS: trace the UTR and branch eligibility
Understand the return path
When a beneficiary cannot be credited, the receiving RTGS bank must return the funds to the originating bank within one hour of receipt at the Payment Interface or before the end of the RTGS business day, whichever comes first. The originating bank should reverse your debit after it receives that return. Delay in returning a failed RTGS payment attracts the current repo rate plus two percentage points under RBI guidance. The detailed rule appears in the RBI RTGS FAQ.
Use the 22-character UTR
The UTR is the strongest starting point for an RTGS investigation. Give the bank the complete 22-character identifier, date, amount and both branch details. Request the receiving bank’s response, the time the payment reached the RTGS interface, and confirmation of whether the return has been received and posted to your account.
Check both branches, not only the new one
Confirm that the remitting and beneficiary branches are RTGS-enabled. Also ask whether the beneficiary account can receive RTGS credits under its current branch arrangement. A branch change may require an updated branch record even when the account number has not changed.
Use positive confirmation and written records
Because RBI describes positive confirmation through the remitting bank, ask for a written status or service-request number. Keep screenshots and statements, but do not treat a staff estimate as a guaranteed recovery date.

IMPS: understand T+1
What T+1 means
For the failed-payment framework, RBI defines “T” as the transaction calendar date. If your account is debited but the beneficiary is not credited, the beneficiary bank should auto-reverse the transaction by T+1. In plain language, a payment made on Tuesday should be reversed no later than the next calendar day under that rule, subject to the transaction’s actual date and system records.
Compensation for a late IMPS reversal
If the reversal is later than T+1, the framework provides ₹100 per day for the delay. RBI says applicable compensation should be credited automatically, without waiting for a complaint or claim. Ask the bank to identify the transaction date used for T, the date the reversal was due, and the date it was actually posted. The framework is in the RBI failed-payment circular.
Check the beneficiary details before another attempt
IMPS failures can involve an incorrect account number, IFSC, beneficiary-bank response or a temporary system interruption. Have the bank verify the recipient and bank details against the original instruction. Do not rely on a branch name alone if the bank says the account is now serviced by a different branch.
Step-by-step: open and manage the bank trace
- Confirm both account positions. Record the sender’s debit or pending entry and ask the beneficiary to check the receiving account.
- Assemble the evidence. Save the UTR or reference, date, amount, branch and IFSC details, error text, and statement entry.
- Contact the originating bank. Use its official app, secure message, call centre or branch. State that the payment was sent before or after a branch change and request a formal trace.
- Ask five specific questions. What is the current status? Was the payment accepted by the receiving bank? Has a return or reversal been initiated? When should the money be credited or refunded? What compensation applies?
- Verify the current branch data. Ask for the correct IFSC and, for RTGS, confirmation that both branches are enabled. Do not assume the branch move changed the IFSC, and do not assume it did not.
- Get a complaint number. Record the date, channel, representative’s name or identifier, promised action and follow-up date. Request written confirmation where available.
- Wait for resolution before retrying. Send a replacement only after the bank confirms that the first payment was returned or otherwise closed.
At-a-glance comparison of the three rails
| Rail | When a debit occurs but the beneficiary is not credited | Delay compensation in RBI guidance | Details to give the bank |
|---|---|---|---|
| NEFT | Credit or return within two hours after the relevant batch settles. | Current RBI LAF repo rate + 2% until credit or refund if the period is missed; no specific claim is required. | Transaction reference, date, amount, sender and beneficiary IFSCs; confirm the current branch IFSC. |
| RTGS | Receiving bank returns the payment within one hour of receipt at the Payment Interface or before RTGS business-day end, whichever is earlier; the originating bank reverses the debit after receiving the return. | Current repo rate + 2% for delay in returning a failed payment. | Complete 22-character UTR, date, amount and branch details; confirm both branches are RTGS-enabled. |
| IMPS | Beneficiary bank auto-reverses by T+1 when it cannot credit the beneficiary. | ₹100 per day for delay beyond T+1. | Transaction reference, date, amount, recipient and bank details. |
These are regulatory time and compensation rules, not statistics about how often branch changes cause failures. The RBI framework describes the payment-system obligations; it does not diagnose the cause of an individual transaction.

If the bank does not resolve the complaint
Escalate inside the bank first
Submit a written complaint through the bank’s grievance channel and attach the transaction reference, statement evidence and prior service-request number. Ask for a final written position: credited, rejected, returned, or still under investigation. Keep copies and note when the bank received the complaint.
Consider the RBI Ombudsman route
RBI’s RTGS FAQ says a qualifying complaint may be taken to the Reserve Bank – Integrated Ombudsman Scheme when the bank has not resolved it within 30 days. The FAQ also identifies the Complaint Management System (CMS) as an online filing route. Check the scheme’s current scope, eligibility and filing instructions before submitting, because the 30-day reference does not guarantee that every payment dispute qualifies. Start with the RBI RTGS FAQ and the RBI failed-payment framework.
What the RBI rules do—and do not—promise
The RBI rules establish outer limits and compensation mechanisms for specified failed transactions. They do not promise that every branch-related failure will be resolved on the same day, identify which IFSC was correct for your account, or prove that the branch change caused the failure. Your bank’s trace, the receiving bank’s response and the transaction records determine those facts.
