First find out whether the payout failed, is still being processed, or actually reached the old account. Ask the mutual fund’s asset management company (AMC) or registrar and transfer agent (RTA) for the payment status, then update the bank mandate with the fund’s prescribed form and proof. A mandate change does not automatically reissue an earlier payment, so request the returned or unclaimed amount separately after the new account is accepted.
This guidance applies to Indian mutual funds, where “dividend” may appear in statements as an Income Distribution cum Capital Withdrawal (IDCW) payout. The exact documents, validation period and claim route depend on the AMC, RTA, payment channel and whether your units are held in a folio or through a demat account.

Identify which problem you have
The registered bank mandate on the fund’s records usually controls an IDCW or redemption payment. If more than one bank account is registered, the fund generally uses the account marked as primary or default unless the transaction permits another registered account to be selected. Do not assume that changing the bank details in an investment app changed every folio or your demat mandate.
| What you observe | What it usually means | First action |
|---|---|---|
| The old account is open and the statement shows a credit | The payment may have completed normally to that account. | Ask the bank to trace the credit using the value date, amount and transaction reference, and ask the AMC/RTA to confirm the destination account. |
| The old account is closed, or the bank rejected the transfer | The payment may have been returned to the fund or marked unpaid. | Ask the AMC/RTA whether it is pending, rejected, returned or recorded as unclaimed; then submit a new mandate and a separate payout request. |
| No credit appears and the AMC says the amount is unclaimed | The fund is holding the money under its unclaimed-payment process. | Use the AMC/RTA’s official unclaimed-amount facility and follow its identity and bank-verification checklist. |
| The units are in demat form | The depository participant (DP) mandate may control the payout, depending on the scheme and channel. | Check both the DP’s bank details and the AMC/RTA record before filing a claim. |
A completed credit to an active old account is different from a failed transfer. The reviewed investor guidance does not establish a universal recall procedure for a payment that the bank has already credited, so confirmation must come from the bank and the AMC/RTA.

What to collect before contacting anyone
Have a clean record of the specific payout. This prevents the service team from treating a historical payment as a new transaction and helps you prove ownership if the old mandate is no longer valid.
- AMC or fund name, scheme name and folio number, or your demat and DP details.
- Unit-holder names exactly as recorded, including the first holder whose name appears on bank evidence.
- IDCWs or dividend declaration and payment date, amount, and any transaction or bank reference.
- The old account number’s last few digits and the new account details, without sharing passwords, PINs or one-time passwords.
- Bank return, rejection or account-closure information, if the bank supplied it.
- Copies of statements, mandate submissions and service acknowledgements.
Six steps to recover a returned or unclaimed payout
- Confirm the holding and mandate. Download the latest official AMC/RTA statement or sign in through its verified investor portal. Check the bank account recorded for the relevant folio and the entry for the payout. For demat-held units, obtain the corresponding DP statement and mandate details.
- Ask for the exact payment status. Contact the AMC/RTA using the telephone number, email address, portal or service centre published by that institution. Ask specifically whether the transfer is pending, rejected by the bank, returned to the fund, paid to an account, or classified as unclaimed. Request the payment reference and the date on which any returned money was received.
- Submit the current bank-mandate form. AMFI’s investor guidance describes submitting the prescribed form to the fund or its RTA. Follow the current checklist for that AMC rather than an old downloaded form. A new account should not be treated as usable until the AMC/RTA confirms that it has been registered.
- Provide acceptable evidence. Common examples are a cancelled cheque for the new account showing the first unit-holder’s name and account number, a recent bank statement or passbook, or a bank-certified letter. The fund can request additional evidence, particularly where the old account is unavailable.
- File the payout or unclaimed-amount request separately. After the mandate is accepted, ask what declaration, indemnity, claim form or other instruction is required to release the earlier amount. Updating the mandate alone does not guarantee an automatic reissue. Keep the acknowledgement and claim reference.
- Track validation and follow up. Ask which cooling, validation or processing rule applies to this payment. If the stated period passes without a clear status, quote the original reference in a written follow-up rather than opening duplicate requests.
How to change the bank account linked to a folio
Evidence for a new account
AMFI lists a cancelled cheque, recent statement or passbook, and a bank-certified letter as common ways to establish the new account. The document normally needs to show the account number and the first unit holder’s name. A fund may reject an image that is illegible, lacks the holder’s name, or does not match the folio’s holder pattern.
When the old account is closed
AMFI says a signed and stamped original letter from the former bank confirming closure may be submitted instead of the old cancelled cheque. That is a common route, not a promise that every AMC will accept the same document without additions. The AMC may ask for old-account proof to authenticate the request and prevent an unauthorized change.

When several accounts are registered
Specify which account is primary or default. AMFI’s guidance says redemption or dividend proceeds generally go to that default when a request does not identify another registered account. A scheme document can use similar wording, but individual AMCs may offer different choices and controls. Check the confirmation letter or portal record after the change.
When a redemption is being placed at the same time
Submitting a bank change together with, or immediately before, a redemption can trigger rejection, extra validation or a delay. AMFI describes a ten-day cooling period for relevant changes. Do not place a time-sensitive withdrawal until the AMC/RTA tells you that the new mandate is active and explains which account will receive the proceeds.
How to claim money listed as unclaimed
CAMS and individual AMCs provide facilities to search for unclaimed dividend or redemption amounts. Search only through the official AMC or RTA service channel and match the result to your folio, scheme and payout date. A search result is not itself approval of a claim; the fund may still require identity, address, bank and signature verification.

- Locate the unclaimed entry with the official facility or ask investor services to confirm it.
- Obtain the fund’s current claim form and document list.
- Submit the claim with the accepted new-bank evidence and any proof requested for the former account.
- Ask whether notarisation, a cancelled cheque, a bank letter, an indemnity or a signature update is required for your holder category.
- Record the service request number and the expected next status, rather than assuming a fixed reissue date.
Claim rules are not standardized across all AMCs and RTAs. The amount may remain unclaimed until the fund receives a valid instruction, so a returned transfer and an unclaimed balance are related but not identical statuses.

If the payout appears credited to the old account
Verify with the bank first
Call or visit the bank through its official channel and provide the account number, value date, amount and payment reference. Ask whether the account is active, dormant, closed, transferred to another branch or subject to a hold. Request written confirmation of the credit or rejection if possible.
Ask the AMC/RTA to confirm the destination
Request the last four digits of the destination account, transfer date, payment reference and whether the transaction was returned. Do not email complete banking credentials, card numbers, passwords or OTPs. If the bank confirms a completed credit, the AMC/RTA may be unable to reverse it; the available remedy depends on the bank’s status and the specific payment channel.
Do not treat a mandate change as a recall
A new mandate controls future eligible payments after registration. It does not, by itself, pull back money already credited to an old account. Get written instructions before filing duplicate claims or asking for a second payment.

How long can validation take?
There is no single all-fund deadline. Published documents illustrate why the AMC/RTA must be asked about the specific transaction.
| Published interval | Where it applies | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Ten-day cooling period | AMFI guidance for relevant bank changes submitted with or just before redemption. | A risk-control interval, not a promise that every payout will be sent on day ten. |
| 10 calendar days for validation | A SEBI-hosted scheme document for a particular fund. | Fund-specific; other schemes can use different validation rules. |
| Dispatch within 10 working days in a stated situation | The same particular scheme document. | Do not generalize this dispatch statement to every AMC or payment type. |
| T+2 working-day retry and up to four working days in a clearing workflow | A platform-specific failed-payout process. | Relevant only to customers and transactions using that platform’s stated process. |
If a service representative gives you a date, ask whether it is a validation date, a reissue date or an outer service estimate. Keep the response with your complaint record.

The mandate was rejected
Check that the form is current, signatures match the folio, the account holder name is consistent, and the cheque or statement is legible. Ask for the exact rejection code or missing document and resubmit through the stated channel.
The fund says no unclaimed amount exists
Ask for the payment reference, destination account’s last four digits and return status. Check whether the amount was paid to the default account, netted against another transaction, or is still within a bank-processing cycle.

The old account belongs to a joint holder or has changed ownership
Do not substitute a different person’s account without written acceptance from the AMC/RTA. The fund may require signatures or documents from all registered holders and may apply additional verification.
The AMC/RTA does not respond
Send a written complaint through the institution’s published grievance channel, quote every prior service number, and attach only the documents requested through that verified channel. Preserve delivery evidence and copies of all responses.
Escalate without losing the paper trail
- Start with investor services and obtain a complaint or service reference.
- If unresolved, use the AMC’s published grievance officer or escalation route.
- State the folio or demat details, payout date, amount, requested remedy and the documents already supplied.
- Ask for a written explanation of whether the payment is pending, returned, unclaimed or completed.
- Retain statements, bank correspondence, mandate acknowledgements and complaint replies.
There is no universal escalation timeline established for every fund house. Follow the timeline given in your AMC’s current grievance policy and escalate again with the existing reference rather than creating conflicting claims.

Quick Recap
Prevent another payout going to the wrong account
- Review the registered default bank after opening a new account or closing an old one.
- Update each folio separately and verify the confirmation before the next IDCW or redemption.
- Keep a current cancelled cheque or bank letter available for future validation.
- For demat units, review the DP mandate as well as AMC/RTA records.
- Use only official websites, portals, telephone numbers and service centres; never disclose login credentials or OTPs.
- When requesting a redemption soon after a bank change, ask in writing whether a cooling period or payment-to-existing-account rule applies.
