Do not immediately pay the same Lightning invoice again. First open the payment details and determine whether the transaction is still pending/in flight, has succeeded, or has failed. A payment with an HTLC still locked into its route cannot normally be canceled or safely retried; it must resolve through the payment preimage or time out. Retry only after your wallet reports a final failure.
If the cost looks high, compare the amount delivered to the recipient with the total amount sent. Lightning routing nodes can charge a base fee and an amount-based fee, and multi-part payments can incur base fees on more than one route.

Start with the payment status, not a second payment
Lightning wallets use different labels, but the underlying states are similar. LND documentation distinguishes initiated, in-flight, succeeded and failed payments. Core Lightning’s pay method reports complete, pending or failed. A wallet may call an in-flight payment “pending,” “processing” or “stuck.” Those labels do not mean the same thing as a confirmed failure.

The most important distinction is between an ordinary routing failure before an HTLC is locked and an HTLC that is already in flight. LND’s payment guide says a failed first stage can be retried, but once an HTLC is locked into the route, the sender must wait for the preimage or a timeout. Lightning Labs describes this situation as a “stuck payment” that “cannot be retried” while it is unresolved. That guidance does not establish one universal waiting period for every wallet.

What to record before troubleshooting
Write down the information support or a node operator will need while the payment details are still visible:
- The invoice or payment identifier.
- The amount and currency unit shown by the wallet.
- The date and time of the attempt, including your time zone if relevant.
- The wallet or node software name and version.
- The exact status, error text and any displayed fee.
Never send a seed phrase, private key or recovery phrase to a wallet provider, node operator or anyone claiming to offer payment recovery. A payment identifier and diagnostic details are not substitutes for wallet credentials.
Step-by-step: diagnose a pending or failed payment
- Open payment history and the individual payment record. Look for a terminal status, route error, fee, amount sent and amount received. A notification that merely says “processing” is not a failure confirmation.
- Check the wallet’s own tracking view. Consumer wallet controls are not standardized, so use the status and detail screens provided by that wallet. For a node, LND exposes
TrackPaymentV2, which reports in-flight, succeeded or failed states. Core Lightning documentslightning-paystatusfor monitoring progress and retries. - If the payment is still pending or in flight, leave that payment alone. An HTLC may be locked on one or more channels. If the receiver has not revealed the preimage, or a route node has gone offline, resolution can take longer. Keep the payment identifier and ask the wallet provider whether it remains in flight and whether that wallet has a documented recovery procedure.
- Wait for a final result rather than assuming that elapsed time equals failure. The documentation does not define a universal point at which every wallet can cancel a pending payment. Do not use a second payment to “test” whether the first one worked.
- Retry only after a final failure appears. Confirm that the invoice is still valid, the amount is correct and the recipient is the intended one. A route that failed before an HTLC was locked can generally be attempted again, but that rule does not apply to a payment still marked in flight.
- Save the new attempt’s details separately. If the retry also fails, compare its error and fee with the first attempt instead of treating both records as one transaction.
Why a Lightning payment can remain pending
An HTLC is still locked
Lightning uses hashed timelock contracts (HTLCs) to link the hops in a route. When an HTLC is locked, the sender cannot simply erase the payment from the network. Settlement requires the recipient’s payment preimage; otherwise the timelock process must unwind. That is why an in-flight payment is operationally different from a failed route search.

If the destination does not reveal the preimage, the sender’s wallet continues to report an unresolved payment until the route settles or times out. The absence of a success notification is not proof that the recipient never saw the attempt.

A forwarding node is unavailable
A route can include several forwarding nodes. If one becomes unreachable after the HTLC is locked, the payment may take longer to resolve. Core Lightning identifies route failures as a common cause of payment problems, but a generic error does not identify which node failed in your particular transaction.
The wallet is showing an intermediate state
Some wallets expose only a simplified “pending” label, while node software exposes more granular states. The displayed label is therefore a reason to inspect the payment record, not a guarantee that cancellation is available.
Can you cancel or reverse a stuck payment?
There is no universal consumer-wallet cancellation command supported by the documentation reviewed here. Once an HTLC is in flight, the payment must settle or time out. A wallet provider may have its own safe recovery process, but you should not assume that deleting the invoice, closing the app or restarting the wallet cancels the network payment.
Contact the wallet provider when the payment remains unresolved and provide the payment identifier, timestamp, status and software version. Ask specifically whether the record is still in flight, whether the wallet exposes a documented cancellation or recovery operation, and what state you should wait for before making another payment. Do not authorize a manual channel operation merely because the payment screen looks stuck.

Why the amount sent can exceed the amount received
Lightning does not use one universal flat transaction fee. Forwarding nodes set their own routing fees. The LND payment guide describes two components:

| Amount-based fee | A variable rate calculated from the amount forwarded. |
| Multiple routes in a multi-part payment | Each route can add its own base fees, so splitting one payment can increase the total base-fee component. |
To inspect the actual cost, compare the two amounts in the payment details. Core Lightning uses amount_msat for the amount the destination receives and amount_sent_msat for the total sent, including routing fees. The difference between those fields is the fee paid for that attempt. If your wallet uses different labels, look for an equivalent “recipient amount” and “total sent” pair.
Example of reading the fee
Suppose the payment record shows 100,000 millisatoshis delivered and 100,250 millisatoshis sent. The 250-millisatoshi difference is the routing cost recorded for that payment. It is not evidence of a network-wide fixed fee; another route, amount or set of forwarding nodes can produce a different result.
How to prevent an unexpectedly expensive retry
- Review the wallet’s fee preview before sending. Note the maximum fee, the estimated total and whether the wallet is splitting the payment across multiple routes.
- Set a fee limit when the wallet supports one. LND’s API recommends setting a limit for a new attempt. Core Lightning can report “route too expensive” when the fee or total locktime exceeds configured limits.
- Do not set the limit to zero unless you intentionally accept only zero-fee routes. LND documents that a zero limit means only zero-fee routes will be considered and will often prevent a route from being found.
- Choose a maximum you accept rather than copying a universal number. The appropriate cap depends on the amount, available routes and your tolerance for failure. A limit that is too low can leave no usable route.
- Compare the result after settlement. Record the recipient amount, total sent and fee for each completed attempt so you can tell whether a higher cost came from a different route or from multiple route segments.
Fee controls differ by wallet and node implementation. A limit protects a new attempt; it does not retroactively cancel a payment that is already in flight.

Understanding common failure messages
“Route too expensive”
Core Lightning uses this error when a candidate route exceeds configured fee or delay limits. Check the fee cap and the wallet’s route estimate. Raising the limit may make a route available, but it also permits a more expensive payment, so change it only to a maximum you have chosen.
“Unable to find a route”
This means the wallet could not find a route that met its requirements at that moment. It is distinct from a payment that is still pending. Check the invoice details, available balance and fee limit, then make a new attempt only after the prior attempt is definitively failed.
Timeout
A timeout is a terminal failure, not merely an elapsed-time guess. Once the wallet reports it, verify the invoice and recipient before retrying.

Incorrect payment details or insufficient balance
Correct the invoice or fund the sending wallet as appropriate, then create a new attempt. Keep the failed record for your support case instead of repeatedly submitting the same unresolved attempt.

Why force-closing a channel is usually the wrong fix
A channel force close is a unilateral channel operation, not a payment-cancellation or retry control. Lightning Labs explains that the party initiating a force close may have funds locked for a period before they can be redeemed. Closing a channel can therefore create a separate liquidity and access problem while doing nothing to resolve the payment record in the way you intend.
Do not force-close a channel merely because one payment is pending or expensive. First use the wallet’s payment tracking, wait for a terminal result, and contact node or wallet support for persistent channel trouble. Channel balance, channel activity and payment settlement are related but separate matters.
A practical decision tree
- The record says succeeded: verify the recipient amount and total sent, then calculate the difference as the routing cost.
- The record says failed: read the reason, verify the invoice and amount, review the fee limit, and retry once you are satisfied the invoice is still valid.
- The record says pending or in flight: do not duplicate the payment, track the same identifier and ask the provider whether an HTLC remains locked.
- The wallet cannot display a clear state: preserve the identifier and diagnostic information, avoid channel closure, and escalate to the wallet provider.
Questions to ask support
A useful support request is specific and reproducible. Include the payment identifier, exact timestamp, amount, wallet and version, displayed status, displayed error and whether the payment details show a fee. Ask whether the payment is in flight or terminally failed, whether the wallet has a documented cancellation or recovery path, and what status must appear before a retry is safe.
