What to do if a jeweller offers less than your gold jewellery is worth

By TheFinanceBase Team 9 min read

Do not accept immediately. Ask the jeweller to show the calculation: the item’s weight, the fineness or karat used, deductions for stones and other parts, the price per gram (or other unit), and every fee. Get that breakdown in writing, check the marks yourself, and obtain comparable quotes from other reputable buyers. If the piece is attractive, branded, antique or in good condition, have its whole-item resale potential assessed before treating it as scrap.

First, identify what the offer actually buys

A jeweller may be offering to buy only the recoverable metal, not the jewellery as a complete object. A scrap offer normally reflects an estimate of gold content less the buyer’s costs and margin. A resale offer values the design, workmanship, condition, maker, age and demand for the finished piece. Those are different transactions, so a low scrap quote does not prove that the jewellery has no value.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Ask the buyer to state, in plain language, which route applies:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Scrap-metal purchase: the item is priced mainly for its gold content and may be melted or refined.
  • Complete-piece resale: the buyer intends to sell the ring, chain, bracelet or watch as jewellery and considers its non-metal features.
  • Consignment or auction estimate: the item is marketed to a later buyer, with a commission or other selling costs and no guaranteed final price.

Do not compare a guaranteed cash scrap payment with an estimated auction result as though they were the same thing. Write down the amount you would actually receive, when you would receive it, and what happens if the item does not sell.

Understand the gold-content calculation

Gold jewellery is commonly alloyed with other metals. In US terminology, karat indicates the number of gold parts out of 24. The Federal Trade Commission explains that 24K is pure gold, 18K is 18 parts gold and six parts other metal, and 14K is 14 parts gold and 10 parts other metal.

Mark or description Gold proportion expressed by the standard What it does not tell you
24K 24 of 24 parts gold (described by the FTC as pure gold) The item’s weight, condition, design value, stones or the buyer’s deductions
18K 18 of 24 parts gold, or 75% The actual precious-metal weight if the item contains stones, springs, solder or other materials
14K 14 of 24 parts gold, or about 58.3% The rate the buyer will apply or any refining and transaction costs
UK 9 carat, marked 375 At least 375 parts gold per 1,000, or 37.5% Whether the complete item has resale value beyond its metal content

These proportions are definitions, not offers or market prices. A simple cross-check is to multiply the item’s estimated gold-free weight by the stated proportion. For example, 10 grams of solid 18K metal would contain about 7.5 grams of gold before accounting for stones, hollow sections, solder and other non-gold parts. A scale reading for the entire object is not automatically the weight of gold that can be refined.

Descriptions such as gold plated, gold filled, gold overlay and gold washed indicate that a layer or surface treatment may be present rather than a solid gold alloy throughout. The FTC’s consumer guidance distinguishes these descriptions from solid-gold karat claims. Ask the jeweller exactly which description they found and how it changes the calculation.

Read the marks without treating them as a price tag

Inspect the inside of a ring, the clasp or a small flat area of the item. A karat stamp or hallmark can help identify the stated fineness, but it is not a complete valuation. In the UK, a hallmark includes a fineness mark; 375 denotes at least 375 parts gold per 1,000 for 9 carat gold. UK guidance says items weighing less than 1 gram are exempt from the compulsory hallmarking threshold, so the absence of a hallmark on a very light item does not by itself prove that it is not gold.

Marks can be tiny. Use a jeweller’s loupe or ask the shop for a magnifying glass, then photograph the mark and the item before handing it over. The British Hallmarking Council and GOV.UK describe hallmarking’s purpose as protecting buyers from fraud and caution that it is very difficult to know what an item is made of merely by looking at or touching it. A mark still needs to be interpreted in context: ask who applied it, whether the mark is consistent with the item, and what testing the buyer performed.

Do not file, scratch or acid-test the jewellery yourself merely to challenge a quote. Such tests can damage a finish or stone setting. Ask the buyer to explain the test method and whether testing will leave a mark.

Request a written, line-by-line offer

Before accepting payment, ask for a written statement containing each of these elements:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Gross weight: the weight of the complete item, with the unit used.
  • Non-gold deductions: the weight or treatment of stones, pearls, clasps, springs, solder, plating, enamel and other components.
  • Fineness assumption: the karat or hallmark relied on and how it was verified.
  • Price basis: the rate per gram or other unit, the reference bullion price and the date and time used.
  • Fees and deductions: refining charges, testing fees, commission, postage, insurance or any other amount removed from the quoted figure.
  • Sale route: scrap purchase, immediate resale, consignment or auction.
  • Payment and cancellation terms: when money is paid, whether the offer expires, and whether you can reclaim the item before processing.

In the UK, Birmingham City Council Trading Standards says that a business offering to buy scrap gold at that day’s bullion price must do so. UK precious-metal pricing guidance also calls for clear information about weight, metal type, fineness and relevant non-weight costs. Those rules and complaint routes are jurisdiction-specific; they are not a universal legal standard for every country.

Check the offer yourself before comparing buyers

Use a scale as a reasonableness check

A digital jewellery scale can reveal whether the stated gross weight is plausible. Weigh the item on a stable surface, record the unit and photograph the display. Keep the result as a rough cross-check only: a scale cannot identify fineness, separate a gemstone from its setting or establish fair resale value. Household kitchen scales may be too coarse for small pieces.

Separate metal weight from complete-item weight

Ask how the buyer estimated the precious-metal portion. A heavy stone, steel spring, base-metal clasp, hollow tube or soldered joint can make the gross weight materially different from the gold weight. If the buyer simply multiplies the entire scale reading by a karat percentage without explaining non-gold parts, ask for a revised calculation or a second test.

Check the day’s price, not an old headline figure

Gold prices move continually. For a fair comparison, check the current reference price on the same day and record the time and currency. No single website price guarantees what a local buyer must pay: the buyer may quote a different unit, purity basis, spread or transaction cost. The useful comparison is the net amount after all deductions, not the largest number displayed in an advertisement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare at least two other reputable buyers

Contact more than one established buyer and request the same written breakdown from each. Nottinghamshire Trading Standards’ practical guidance recommends weighing items, checking marks, comparing several buyers and current prices, and including fees or postage. That guidance is an older document, so confirm current local rules and charges, but its comparison method remains sensible.

Comparison point Question to ask every buyer Why it changes the result
Assessed metal What fineness did you use, and how was it checked? A higher assumed karat can inflate a quote; a lower one can depress it.
Weight basis Is this gross item weight or estimated precious-metal weight? Stones and mixed components may not be payable as gold.
Price basis What rate per gram or unit, reference price and time apply? Different rates or currencies make headline quotes incomparable.
Deductions and fees What will be removed for refining, testing, postage, insurance or commission? A higher stated rate can produce a lower net payment.
Sale route Are you buying for scrap, reselling the complete piece or taking it on consignment? Design and maker value may be lost in a scrap transaction.
Practical outcome When is payment made, and can I cancel or reclaim the item? Speed, delivery risk and return rights matter alongside price.

Use one worksheet for every quote. Record the buyer’s name, date, item description, stated fineness, gross and net weights, rate, deductions and final payment. If posting jewellery, photograph the item, marks and packaging first; use tracked, insured delivery only on terms you understand.

Decide whether scrap is the wrong route

A desirable piece can be worth more intact than its melt value. Ask a reputable second-hand dealer, auction service or specialist appraiser for an estimate when the item is:

  • from a recognised maker or designer;
  • antique, vintage or associated with a documented period;
  • set with attractive or potentially valuable stones;
  • in unusually good, original or wearable condition; or
  • an uncommon design that could appeal to collectors.

Request the likely net proceeds, not just an optimistic estimate. A resale or auction route may involve photography, listing, insurance, commission, a waiting period and the possibility that the item sells for less than expected or does not sell. Compare that risk and delay with the certainty of the best cash scrap offer. No premium is guaranteed merely because a piece looks old or has a famous-looking mark.

Common reasons a quote looks low

The buyer used the wrong fineness

A 9-carat item and an 18-carat item can look similar but contain very different proportions of gold. Ask the jeweller to point to the mark and show the arithmetic. If the mark is unclear or contradictory, obtain an independent test before accepting a lower classification.

The quote uses gross weight

Some buyers quote after removing stones and non-gold components; others first display a gross weight and then deduct. Confusing the two figures makes a legitimate deduction look like an unexplained discount. Require both numbers.

The item is plated or filled

A surface layer may have little recoverable gold compared with a solid-gold alloy. The buyer should identify the construction and explain the test, rather than silently applying a solid-gold karat rate.

Fees were hidden in the headline rate

Testing, refining, commission, postage and insurance can reduce the amount paid. Compare the final amount in your hand, including delivery costs, rather than the advertised rate alone.

The piece has a resale market the buyer is not using

A scrap buyer may not be equipped to price design, provenance or collector demand. That is a limitation of the route, not proof that the jewellery is worth only its metal content.

What to do if the jeweller will not explain the calculation

  1. Pause the transaction. Take back the item if you have not agreed to a binding sale, and do not leave it for processing while you investigate.
  2. Preserve evidence. Keep photographs, written quotes, receipts, test reports, emails and notes of what staff said, including dates and names where available.
  3. Ask for a manager’s written response. Identify the disputed weight, mark, deduction or price basis and request a corrected statement.
  4. Obtain an independent assessment. A qualified appraiser or another established buyer can test fineness and explain whether resale is realistic.
  5. Use the appropriate consumer authority. In the UK, GOV.UK directs consumers with hallmark questions or disputes to Citizens Advice; possible hallmarking-law concerns can also be raised with local Trading Standards. Outside the UK, contact the consumer-protection or hallmarking authority for your location.

Do not accuse a business of fraud solely because its offer is lower than an online calculator. A calculator may assume pure gold, ignore stones and use a retail or spot price that no buyer pays. Concentrate the complaint on a specific, documented misrepresentation or undisclosed charge.

Questions to ask before you sign

  • Is this a scrap purchase or a resale assessment?
  • What exact mark or test establishes the fineness?
  • What is the gross weight, and what is the payable gold weight?
  • Which stones and non-gold parts are excluded, and how were they valued?
  • What reference price and timestamp set the rate?
  • Which fees, commissions, postage or refining charges reduce the payment?
  • When will I be paid, and can I cancel or reclaim the item?
  • Can you give me the complete calculation in writing?

If the answers are clear and comparable quotes support the figure, a lower-than-expected offer may simply reflect alloy content, non-gold weight and transaction costs. If the answers change from one employee to another or the buyer refuses to document them, walk away and keep the jewellery while you obtain another assessment.
