First determine whether you are dealing with an incoming deposit or an outgoing withdrawal. Then check whether the exchange provides a transaction hash and inspect that hash on the correct network. Do not send a second payment until you know whether the original transaction was broadcast, confirmed, or rejected.
What “pending” means depends on the transaction type
An exchange status is an account-platform label, not a universal blockchain status. The same word can describe an unbroadcast withdrawal, a transaction waiting in the Bitcoin mempool, an Ethereum transaction waiting for validator inclusion, or a deposit that has confirmed but has not yet met the exchange’s crediting threshold.

Kraken describes a pending or processing deposit as one that is confirming on its asset network. For withdrawals, Kraken distinguishes an internal “Pending” stage from “Sending,” which indicates that the withdrawal has been broadcast and is waiting for blockchain confirmation. Coinbase likewise keeps deposits pending until they reach the required number of network confirmations. These labels and thresholds can change, so use the current help page for your exchange and asset.

Incoming deposit
You are waiting for Bitcoin or Ether to arrive in your exchange account from another exchange, wallet, or person. The sending wallet or service controls whether a transaction is created and broadcast. The receiving exchange cannot credit funds it has not detected, and it may not credit a detected transaction until its confirmation policy is satisfied.

Outgoing withdrawal
You instructed the exchange to send Bitcoin or Ether to an external address. The exchange may perform internal checks before broadcasting anything. Until a hash exists, a blockchain explorer cannot show the withdrawal because there may be no on-chain transaction to find.
How to troubleshoot an incoming Bitcoin or Ethereum deposit
- Ask the sender for the transaction hash. A screenshot of an exchange status is not enough. Request the full transaction ID (hash), the asset, the network used, the amount, and the destination address or memo/tag if the asset requires one.
- Confirm the network matches the receiving exchange. Bitcoin must be sent over the Bitcoin network, and Ether must be sent over a network the exchange explicitly supports for that asset. Do not assume that similarly named networks are interchangeable.
- Check the hash on an explorer for that exact network. Confirm that the destination address matches your exchange deposit address, the amount is plausible, and the status is either unconfirmed or confirmed. An Ethereum hash must be checked on the same Ethereum-compatible network on which it was sent; a Bitcoin hash belongs on a Bitcoin explorer.
- If the hash is unconfirmed, investigate the sender side. The sending exchange or wallet may be waiting to broadcast, may have selected a low fee, or may be experiencing its own queue. The receiving exchange cannot accelerate a transaction that the network has not confirmed.
- If the hash is confirmed but your balance is unchanged, stop sending more funds. Recheck the network, address, amount, and any required memo or tag. Then contact the receiving exchange through its official support channel with the hash and screenshots that do not reveal passwords, recovery phrases, or private keys.
Coinbase warns that unsupported assets or networks may be lost and advises contacting support about possible recovery options. Recovery is not guaranteed, especially after a confirmed transfer to an unsupported network or incorrect address.
How to troubleshoot an outgoing withdrawal
When there is no transaction hash
No hash generally means the exchange has not broadcast the withdrawal, although the exchange’s interface may use different terminology. Read the detailed status, not just the word “pending.” An internal review, identity check, risk control, wallet maintenance, or payment-gateway queue can all occur before broadcast.

If the status remains pending beyond the exchange’s published guidance, or changes to “On hold,” open a support request with the withdrawal ID, asset, amount, destination network, and exact timestamps. Ask whether the transaction has been broadcast and, if not, what requirement is blocking it.
When a hash appears
Once the exchange says it is sending or supplies a hash, check the network transaction. A confirmed hash means the blockchain accepted the transfer; your exchange account may still take additional time to update, but repeatedly submitting a new withdrawal creates confusion and can produce duplicate payments.
Can you cancel it?
Cancellation rules are exchange-specific. Kraken states that a cancellation can be requested only while a withdrawal is “Initiated” or “Pending,” and that a request made during “Pending” is not guaranteed. Once a withdrawal is being sent or has a hash, assume cancellation is no longer available unless the exchange explicitly says otherwise.

How to read a pending Bitcoin transaction
Bitcoin transactions wait in the network’s mempool until a miner includes them in a block. Bitcoin.org says blocks are added approximately every 10 minutes on average, but block discovery is probabilistic. There is no guaranteed minimum or maximum wait for an individual transaction. A transaction paying a fee below the network’s current priority can wait considerably longer than the average block interval.
The approximately 10-minute figure is a network average, not an exchange service-level promise. Congestion, fee selection, transaction size, and temporary exchange batching can all affect when a withdrawal appears and confirms. If the hash is visible and valid, waiting is usually safer than attempting another transfer.
Bitcoin.org also uses six confirmations as an analogy for a level of finality comparable to waiting six months for a credit-card transaction. That is a general security analogy, not a universal deposit requirement. Each exchange and asset can require a different number of confirmations before crediting or releasing funds.

How to read a pending Ethereum transaction
Ethereum.org explains that a pending transaction is waiting for a validator to include it in a block. Transactions can become stuck when the gas fee set by the sender is lower than what the network currently requires.
If you control the sending wallet
A wallet owner may be able to speed up a pending transaction by issuing a replacement with a higher fee, or cancel it with a replacement transaction using the same account nonce. The wallet must support the operation, and the replacement must follow Ethereum’s nonce and fee rules. Confirm the destination and amount before signing anything.
If an exchange controls the withdrawal wallet
Do not try to replace or cancel the transaction yourself. You do not control the exchange’s private key or nonce, and a third-party “accelerator” cannot legitimately take over that account. Contact the exchange and provide the hash, withdrawal ID, and status. The exchange must decide whether it can rebroadcast, replace, or otherwise resolve the transaction.

Exchange confirmations are different from blockchain confirmations

Coinbase states: “Once a transaction is confirmed, it will show as Completed. This indicates that the transaction cannot be reversed and the funds can be withdrawn.” That describes the exchange’s status policy, not a guarantee that every asset has the same confirmation count. Coinbase’s live asset guidance should be checked because requirements can change.
What to do when the status says “On hold,” “Failed,” or “Completed” but funds are missing
On hold
Treat “On hold” as an exchange-side issue unless a hash proves otherwise. Use only the exchange’s official support route. Ask what verification or account action is required and whether the withdrawal has been broadcast.
Failed or rejected
Read the failure reason and verify whether the exchange returned the funds to your available balance. If no refund appears, provide the withdrawal ID and timestamp to support. Do not immediately submit a replacement until the first request’s final state is clear.

Completed or confirmed, but not credited
Compare the destination address, network, amount, and required confirmations. A confirmed blockchain transaction is generally not reversible by the receiving exchange. If everything matches, send support the hash and evidence that the required confirmations have been reached.
Information to include in a support request
- Account email or user ID, submitted only through the exchange’s authenticated support process
- Asset and network, such as Bitcoin or Ether on the supported network
- Deposit or withdrawal ID shown by the exchange
- Full transaction hash, if one exists
- Amount and destination address (redact unrelated personal information)
- Exact status text, including whether it says Initiated, Pending, Sending, On hold, Failed, or Completed
- Submission time and your time zone
- Screenshots with passwords, two-factor codes, seed phrases, and private keys removed
Support should be able to tell you whether the transaction was broadcast, what confirmation threshold applies, and whether any account restriction is preventing credit or release.
Security rules while a transaction is pending
- Never share a seed phrase or private key. No legitimate exchange employee needs them to clear a transaction.
- Ignore unsolicited recovery offers. The cited exchange and network documentation supports using the exchange’s own help channel; it does not establish any paid recovery service as reliable.
- Verify addresses and networks before sending. A confirmed transfer to the wrong address or unsupported network may be impossible to reverse.
- Do not pay a stranger to “release” funds. A pending label cannot be cleared by sending an additional payment to an individual or by installing unknown software.
- Keep the original transaction evidence. Preserve the hash, exchange status, and timestamps until the issue is resolved.
A safe decision checklist
- Is this an incoming deposit or outgoing withdrawal?
- Does a transaction hash exist?
- Was the correct network used and checked on the matching explorer?
- If Bitcoin, is the transaction merely waiting for a block and fee priority?
- If Ethereum, does the sender control the wallet and nonce, or does the exchange?
- Has the exchange’s required confirmation count been reached?
- Is the status On hold, failed, or otherwise beyond the exchange’s published waiting guidance?
- Have you contacted official support with the hash and exact status?
- Have you avoided resending funds and refused requests for seed phrases, private keys, or unofficial fees?
The practical rule is simple: a hash lets you diagnose the blockchain; no hash means the exchange still controls the next step. Establish that distinction before taking any action.
