Verify the restriction in the exchange’s official app or website, determine exactly what is blocked, and open one documented support case. Preserve every notice and transaction record, answer information requests only through verified channels, and use the exchange’s formal complaint procedure if support does not resolve the issue. The right outside escalation depends on your country, the product involved, and the legal entity named in your account terms.
Start by verifying the restriction and securing your account
Do not act on a direct message, unsolicited email, or social-media reply claiming to be support. Type the exchange’s known web address yourself or open its official mobile app. Check the in-app notification, the email address registered to the account, and the account’s security history.

If you see a password change, new authentication method, withdrawal-address change, or login that you did not make, report it through the exchange’s official security channel immediately. Secure the email account linked to the exchange, change its password from a trusted device, revoke unknown sessions, and review your authentication settings. Do not disclose a password, one-time code, private key, or seed phrase to anyone, including someone who says they are investigating the freeze.

The reason in your notice, not a guess based on the timing, determines what you should do next.

Identify exactly what is blocked
“My account is frozen” can describe several different situations. Record the precise symptom before contacting support:

Check whether the notice distinguishes fiat from crypto withdrawals. Also look for language such as “recent deposit,” “verification required,” “security review,” “compliance review,” or a stated release date. A review-based restriction and a time-based hold require different questions.
Do not assume a universal waiting period
Some holds are tied to the payment method used to fund an account. For example, Kraken’s published help information describes a 72-hour withdrawal hold in certain scenarios involving ACH, PayPal, card, or digital-wallet purchases. That is an example of that exchange’s policy for the described circumstances, not a general crypto-exchange deadline. Its support guidance also says support cannot bypass some time-based holds.
If your notice gives a date, save a copy of it. If it gives no date, ask whether the restriction is time-based or review-based and what event will end it. Do not promise yourself that a particular number of hours or days applies merely because another platform uses it.
Open one clear, official support case
Use the support form or in-app channel reached from the verified exchange site. If you already have a case number, continue that case instead of opening multiple duplicates. Duplicates can split the timeline and make it harder to see which request is current.

Provide only the information the exchange requests, but make the chronology complete:
- Account email or username, as requested by the official form.
- Asset, amount, currency and withdrawal method or blockchain network.
- Destination address, if relevant, and transaction ID if the transfer was broadcast.
- Date and time, including time zone, when you initiated the withdrawal.
- The exact error message and the wording of any account or email notice.
- Dates of recent deposits, payment-method changes, password changes or authentication events that may be relevant.
- Existing case number and a short list of prior contacts.
Ask focused questions rather than sending an accusation or a long speculative explanation:

- Is the restriction a payment-method hold, a security or compliance review, a verification request, or another category?
- What specific document or information is still required?
- Is the transaction already on the blockchain, and if so, what is its transaction ID and status?
- What is the next update date or the formal complaint step if the review cannot be completed through support?
Kraken’s account guidance tells customers to check their email and respond to requests for additional documentation. Its pending-withdrawal page has described contact within 24 hours for a withdrawal pending review, but that page’s crawl copy is old; treat the timing as historical platform guidance, not a current or universal promise. Binance describes an appeal control for some withdrawal-verification restrictions and directs customers to support when that control is unavailable. Follow the route actually displayed for your account and jurisdiction.
Upload identity documents only through the authenticated support flow or another channel that the exchange confirms inside your account. Never send a seed phrase, private key, password, authentication code, or remote-access credentials.
Build a dated evidence file
Create one folder and one chronological log. Save the original email files or screenshots, in-app notices, support replies, case numbers, account statements, deposit confirmations, withdrawal confirmations, transaction IDs, and the exchange terms and complaint procedure as they appeared when the problem occurred.

Your log can be a simple table:

Keep the file private. Do not post identity documents, full wallet addresses, account numbers, authentication details, or unredacted screenshots in a public complaint. Public posts can attract impersonators and recovery scams.
Respond safely to verification or information requests
A genuine review may require identity, source-of-funds, payment or transaction information. Compare the request with the notice in your authenticated account. If an email asks you to use a new link, call an unfamiliar number, install software, or pay a “release” charge, stop and verify the request through the official app.
Read the requested-document list carefully. Submit clear, current documents in the accepted format, and keep a copy of what you sent and when. If a requested item does not apply, explain that fact in the case rather than substituting unrelated material. Ask support to identify the missing item instead of repeatedly uploading the same files.
A legitimate exchange may charge an ordinary network or service fee disclosed in its normal withdrawal flow. That is different from an unsolicited person demanding a separate “verification deposit,” tax, insurance payment, or fee to unlock an account. Do not send a second transaction unless the requirement appears in the official account workflow and you have independently verified it.
Escalate through the exchange’s formal complaint process
If routine support has stopped responding, repeats a generic answer, or does not resolve the restriction after you provide the requested information, find the complaint procedure for the responsible legal entity named in the exchange’s terms or account notice. A complaint should be different from another informal ticket.

State the outcome you want, such as a decision on the withdrawal, a written explanation of the restriction, correction of an error, or return of fiat funds where applicable. Set out the events by date, list your case numbers, identify the documents supplied, and attach only relevant records. Ask for written acknowledgement, a substantive response, and the appropriate external dispute or regulator route if the matter remains unresolved.
The correct external body depends on five factors:
- The legal entity named in the terms, not merely the exchange’s brand name.
- Your residence and where the service was provided.
- Whether the issue concerns crypto custody or trading, a bank or e-money payment, securities, or an alleged scam.
- Whether the agency handles individual compensation or only supervision, intelligence and reports.
- Eligibility rules, filing deadlines and the evidence the service requires.
United Kingdom: firm-first complaints and limited crypto protection
Financial Conduct Authority consumer guidance says to contact the firm first, explain what happened and when, and keep records of your contacts. Firms generally must provide an outcome within eight weeks. If you are unhappy with the response, or do not receive one in time, you may be able to refer an eligible complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service.
Eligibility is not automatic. The FCA warns that most crypto-related activities are not regulated and that crypto investors generally may not have Financial Ombudsman Service or Financial Services Compensation Scheme protection if a firm fails. Check the firm on the FCA Register, read the firm’s own complaint procedure, and confirm that the specific product and legal entity fall within the ombudsman’s remit before relying on that route.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau accepts consumer complaints and says it routes a complaint to the company or another agency. Companies generally respond within 15 days and, in some cases, provide a final response within 60 days. Those time frames describe the complaint process; they do not guarantee that an exchange will release crypto or that funds will be recovered.

The Securities and Exchange Commission accepts crypto-related tips, complaints and referrals for review. Its process is aimed at identifying matters that may warrant investigation, not guaranteeing individual restitution. A custody or trading issue, a linked payment account, and an alleged investment scam may fall under different authorities. Read each agency’s current remit and submit the records that support your specific allegation.

What an external complaint can and cannot do

If the notice suggests law-enforcement action or a court order, the exchange may be legally restricted from explaining more. Preserve the records and obtain qualified local advice when the amount, tax position, business impact or personal safety consequences justify it.
Scams that target frozen-account customers
People who cannot access funds are prime targets for impersonators. Treat an unsolicited promise to “unlock,” “trace,” or “recover” crypto as a warning sign, especially when it demands an upfront fee, a verification deposit, login code, seed phrase, private key, wallet connection or remote access.
- Do not pay a recovery agent who contacted you through social media or a public complaint.
- Do not share passwords, one-time codes, private keys or seed phrases with support or anyone claiming to be support.
- Do not send assets to an intermediary to “test” or “validate” your account.
- Do not assume a threatening message or legal-sounding email is genuine; verify it inside the account.
- Do not publish enough information for an impersonator to identify your account or reconstruct your security answers.
Crypto transfers are generally irreversible once sent. Kraken states this plainly: “Crypto transactions are irreversible–this means we can’t retrieve assets once they’ve been withdrawn from our platform, nor can we reimburse you for crypto transfers you’ve authorized.” If a transfer has already been broadcast, save its transaction ID and confirm its network status; sending another transaction will not reverse the first one.
A practical decision path
- Verify: Sign in through the official app or a manually entered address and read the account notice.
- Secure: If anything indicates unauthorized access, protect the exchange account and its email account before discussing the withdrawal.
- Classify: Identify whether access, trading, fiat, crypto, one transaction or all withdrawals are affected.
- Check timing: Determine whether the notice describes a payment-method hold, a review, a document request or a legal restriction.
- Document: Save the notice, transaction details, case number and a dated contact log.
- Respond: Answer the specific official information request without disclosing secrets.
- Escalate: Use the legal entity’s formal complaint process, then an eligible ombudsman or regulator route appropriate to your jurisdiction and product.
- Protect yourself: Ignore recovery offers and do not authorize another irreversible transfer to solve the first problem.
No regulator, exchange or complaint service can promise an immediate release in every case. The strongest position is a verified account, one coherent case file, a complete timeline and an escalation route matched to the entity and jurisdiction involved.
