Then check that the transaction posted and met the offer’s spend, timing, merchant, location and channel rules. Wait through that issuer’s stated processing window; if the credit is still absent, contact the issuer through the channel it specifies with the offer and transaction details ready.
Start with a four-step check
- Open the offer record. Confirm the offer was added or enrolled before you bought anything, note its end date, and check whether it was attached to the exact account and card used for the purchase.
- Verify the transaction. Make sure the charge has posted rather than remaining pending, and compare the posted amount, date, merchant descriptor and currency with the offer terms.
- Match every eligibility rule. Check the required spend or purchase count, eligible merchant and location, online or in-store channel, exclusions, and any rules about shipping, intermediaries or third-party payment processors.
- Use the correct deadline. The clock can start when a qualifying transaction posts or when the offer period ends, depending on the program. If the applicable window has passed, contact the issuer rather than asking the merchant to issue the reward.
A missing promotional credit is not automatically a billing error. Follow the card issuer’s offer-inquiry process first, and keep copies of the terms and your transaction record in case support needs to investigate.

Confirm that you enrolled the right card before purchase
Card-linked offers normally require enrollment before the transaction. An offer displayed in an account is not proof that it was activated, and activating it after the purchase generally does not make that earlier purchase eligible.

Chase Offers
In the Chase offer wallet, review the Added, Redeemed and Expired tabs. The offer must be linked to the account and card that generated the transaction, and the transaction must have posted. Chase says the Redeemed and Expired sections retain entries for 90 days, so check them before an old record disappears. Its FAQ is at Chase Offers FAQs.

American Express Amex Offers
American Express requires the offer to be enrolled on the eligible card before purchase and that same enrolled card to be used. Check the offer history on that card, not merely another card under the same online profile. The U.S. FAQ is at American Express Amex Offers FAQs.
Check whether the purchase actually qualified
Most missing credits are explained by a term that was easy to overlook. Read the individual offer, because the headline discount or cashback percentage does not describe every condition.
Spend and purchase-count thresholds
Confirm whether the offer requires a minimum amount before tax, a specific number of transactions, or a maximum amount that can earn the reward. Compare the qualifying amount with the issuer’s posted transaction, not only the receipt total. Multiple small purchases may not satisfy a single-purchase threshold, while an offer requiring several purchases may not trigger after only one.

Date and timing rules
Check the offer start and end dates and determine which date the issuer uses. A purchase made before enrollment, after the end date, or close to midnight in the merchant’s time zone can fall outside the window. A transaction may also post on a different date from the day you placed the order.
Merchant, location and sales channel
Verify the exact merchant or participating location. Some offers cover only a named store, a particular country, or purchases made directly through the merchant rather than through a marketplace, mobile wallet, travel agency, delivery service or other intermediary. The merchant name shown on a receipt can differ from the descriptor transmitted to the issuer. The offer terms, not the branding on the checkout page, determine eligibility. American Express explains that it relies on merchant transaction information and lists offer conditions on its Amex Offers page.
Excluded items and payment paths
Look for exclusions such as gift cards, subscriptions, fees, taxes, shipping, split tender or purchases processed by a different entity. A transaction routed through a third-party processor may not carry the merchant information needed for automatic recognition. If you used a digital wallet or a virtual card number, confirm that the enrolled card was still the funding card identified in the offer terms.

Use the issuer’s actual posting window
There is no universal credit-card cashback deadline. The following windows come from the issuers’ published U.S. guidance and should be read together with the specific offer terms.

These are operational periods, not guarantees that every qualifying charge will be recognized automatically. They also are not a card-network-wide standard. Use the schedule attached to your offer and start counting from the event that schedule specifies.
Check for a return, refund or changed transaction
A purchase can look eligible at checkout and lose its reward later. Review the transaction for a full or partial refund, cancellation, return, chargeback, replacement order or other modification. If the final amount falls below a threshold, the transaction may no longer qualify. A credit that already appeared can also be reversed after a return.

American Express states that returns, refunds, cancellations and purchase modifications can interfere with or reverse a credit, and that third-party transaction information can affect recognition. Review the relevant offer terms and the final posted transaction at Amex Offers. For any issuer, keep the original receipt and the later adjustment so support can see the complete sequence.

Chase: inspect the wallet, then inquire
- Open the Chase Offers area for the card used.
- Look in Added to confirm enrollment and in Redeemed to see whether the credit was already recorded.
- Check Expired if the offer period has ended; those wallet records are retained for 90 days.
- Open the card activity and confirm the merchant charge has posted, then compare its details with the offer’s requirements.
- Once the applicable offer window has elapsed, call the number on the back of the card or submit an Account Inquiry through the Secure Message Center. Include the offer name, enrollment date, transaction date and posted amount.

American Express: verify enrollment and card identity
- Open the Amex Offers list for the card that made the purchase and confirm the offer was enrolled before the transaction.
- Verify that the charge used that same enrolled card, rather than another card in the account or a replacement number.
- Compare the posted transaction with the required spend or purchase count, offer dates, eligible location and channel, and exclusions.
- Check whether the order was returned, cancelled, refunded or altered after purchase.
- If the applicable period has elapsed without a credit, call the number printed on the card with the offer and transaction records ready.

Prepare a useful support request
Good documentation lets the issuer compare your claim with the transaction data it received. Save the offer page or a screenshot showing its terms, your enrollment or offer-wallet record, the receipt, the posted transaction, and any refund or cancellation notice. Record the merchant’s legal or billing descriptor, purchase date, amount, location, order number and the last four digits of the card used. Keep copies of secure messages, case numbers and the date of each call.
Describe the issue as a missing promotional credit and ask the issuer to verify eligibility and fulfillment. Point to the exact rule you believe was met rather than saying only that the merchant advertised cashback. Ask whether the transaction data shows a different merchant, channel, date or amount, and whether a return or adjustment removed eligibility. Follow the issuer’s requested inquiry channel; the reviewed guidance does not establish that a missing offer credit should automatically be filed as a general billing dispute.
What to do when support says the purchase was ineligible
Ask for the specific term or transaction attribute that caused the denial. Compare that explanation with the saved offer terms as they appeared when you enrolled. Common decisive differences include a nonqualifying location, a marketplace or intermediary descriptor, a purchase made before enrollment, an amount below the threshold, or a refund that reduced the final charge.

You can still request a receipt correction or refund from the merchant when the underlying charge is wrong, but that is separate from the promotional program. If the issuer confirms that the transaction qualified and the credit is still missing, ask for a case reference and the expected fulfillment action in writing.
Prevent the same problem on the next offer
- Enroll before shopping and capture the confirmation or wallet entry.
- Use the exact enrolled card and avoid switching cards, virtual numbers or payment intermediaries unless the terms allow them.
- Read the merchant, location, channel, spend, count, date and exclusion rules before checkout.
- Keep the receipt until the transaction posts and the credit appears.
- Track the offer end date and the issuer’s stated processing event so you know when an inquiry is timely.
- After a return, cancellation or replacement order, recheck whether the original reward remains valid.
Following this sequence separates a normal processing delay from a transaction that never met the offer. It also gives the issuer the evidence needed to resolve a genuinely missing credit through its own support process.
