What to Do If a Contra Fund Underperforms for Years

If your contra fund has lagged for several years, do not decide from the return chart alone. First compare it with its stated benchmark and with other funds in the same category over identical periods. Then check whether the fund is still following its contrarian mandate, whether its portfolio and manager have changed, what it costs, and whether the holding still suits your goals and total portfolio. A contra fund can lag during a broad bull market because it deliberately buys unpopular assets, but that explanation is not proof that the fund will recover. There is no evidence-based rule that says an investor should sell after a particular number of years or a particular return gap.

Start with a structured review, not a reaction to one weak year

Several years of disappointing performance deserve investigation, but the right question is not simply “Has the NAV gone up?” Ask whether the result is poor relative to the risk and opportunity set the scheme actually chose. A contra fund may trail a popular growth-oriented category while still behaving as its mandate describes. Conversely, a fund can underperform its benchmark and comparable contra funds because of stock selection, excessive concentration, high expenses, a changed mandate or weak execution.

Use the latest official factsheet, scheme information document, portfolio disclosure and performance disclosure. Record the scheme’s category, stated benchmark, expense ratio, portfolio, fund manager, risk measures and any material changes. Compare all figures for the same dates and periods; a three-year return ending in one month cannot be fairly compared with a peer’s return ending in another.

  • Identify the benchmark named by the scheme and whether it is a total-return index.
  • Compare the fund with same-category peers, not with an unrelated equity category.
  • Review at least one long period, such as five years where available, alongside shorter one- and three-year periods.
  • Check whether the benchmark, investment objective, manager or portfolio construction changed during the period.
  • Separate fund performance from the effect of your purchase date, systematic investments and taxes.

This process cannot guarantee a correct decision. It prevents a short-term market mood, a headline ranking or a purchase made near a market peak from making the decision for you.

Why a contra fund can lag—and why that is not a recovery promise

Contra funds deliberately take positions against prevailing market preferences. The approach generally seeks companies or sectors that are out of favour, trading at prices the manager considers attractive, in the expectation that their prospects will improve over time. Such positions can remain unpopular for long periods, and the manager can be wrong about the business, valuation or timing.

The Association of Mutual Funds in India describes the risk this way: “These funds carry the risk of getting calls wrong as catching a trend before the herd is not possible in every market cycle and these funds typically underperform in a bull market.” That statement explains one possible source of a lagging result: a bull market may be led by expensive or fashionable companies that a contrarian portfolio intentionally avoids.

However, “contrarian” is not a synonym for “temporarily down.” A share can stay cheap because its earnings, balance sheet, governance or industry economics have deteriorated. A fund can also have too little diversification, pay more than peers to manage its portfolio, or make a series of unsuccessful calls. Treat the strategy as a risk factor to investigate, not as a reason to assume that patience will eventually be rewarded.

Compare the fund with the right yardsticks

Use the stated benchmark

Start with the benchmark named in the current scheme documents. The benchmark should reflect the scheme’s objective and portfolio. A benchmark change should be disclosed and reasonably justified; if one occurred, note the old and new benchmarks and avoid treating the entire history as though it were measured against one unchanged yardstick.

For example, SBI Contra Fund’s factsheet reporting as of 31 May 2026 named BSE 500 TRI as its first-tier benchmark. That is a fact about that scheme and date, not a universal benchmark for every contra fund. Your fund may name a different index, and the current document controls.

Compare same-category peers over matching periods

Use the category classification shown in current disclosures and compare one-, three- and five-year periods when those periods are available. A peer’s first-place ranking over six months says little about a strategy intended to work through several market cycles. Also check whether a peer has a different asset mix, market-cap range, cash level or benchmark.

Comparison What it can tell you What it cannot tell you by itself
Fund versus stated benchmark Whether the portfolio added or destroyed value relative to the market exposure the scheme says it represents. Whether the benchmark is still appropriate after a mandate or portfolio change.
Fund versus same-category peers Whether the result is common to contra investing or unusually weak for this scheme. Whether a higher-ranked peer took risks that do not suit your goals.
One-, three- and five-year returns Whether weakness is recent, persistent or visible across more than one market phase. Whether the future will repeat the past.
Absolute return How the holding affected your account value. Whether the result compensated you for volatility, risk and costs.

Make sure returns use the same convention, such as annualised returns for periods longer than one year, and understand whether figures are before or after expenses. Do not rank a fund using a methodology you cannot reconcile with its official disclosure.

Inspect the scheme itself, not only its return history

Objective, mandate and portfolio

Read the latest investment objective and compare it with the actual portfolio. Look for the proportion invested in sectors and companies that are genuinely out of favour, the fund’s market-cap exposure, cash or defensive allocation, overseas holdings if any, and concentration in its largest positions. A portfolio may be labelled contra while holding many of the same dominant companies as a broad index; that is not automatically wrong, but it changes what diversification you are receiving.

Manager and material changes

Note the current fund manager and the period for which that manager was responsible. A long return history may include decisions made by several managers. Check notices for changes to the manager, fundamental attributes, benchmark, risk controls, merger or repositioning. Evaluate performance in the context of who made the decisions and under what mandate.

Costs and risk measures

Review the expense ratio for your plan, portfolio turnover where disclosed, and the risk measures provided in the factsheet. Standard deviation, beta, Sharpe ratio and downside measures can help you understand how much volatility and market sensitivity accompanied the return, but none is a standalone verdict. SBI Contra Fund’s May 2026 factsheet, for example, reported three-year monthly data points for its risk ratios; those figures illustrate the type of information available, not a market-wide standard.

Also check the fund’s riskometer and portfolio disclosures. A fund that has become more concentrated or more volatile may no longer play the same role in your asset allocation, even if its name and category remain unchanged.

Decide whether the holding still fits your plan

Performance is only one part of suitability. Write down the goal for which you own the fund, the date by which you need the money and how much loss you could tolerate without abandoning the plan. A contrarian equity strategy requires the ability to withstand substantial volatility and an uncertain recovery period. Money needed for a near-term obligation generally has less capacity for that uncertainty than a distant retirement goal, but the appropriate choice depends on your circumstances.

Examine the holding in your whole portfolio. If several funds own the same companies, your apparent diversification may be smaller than it looks. If the contra fund is your only equity exposure, replacing it with a different fund could alter your risk dramatically. Consider equity, debt, cash and other assets together rather than judging one scheme in isolation.

Broad investor guidance from the US Securities and Exchange Commission similarly highlights volatility, costs, manager or strategy changes and diversification as review factors. Those points are educational only; Indian tax, regulatory and product rules require India-specific documents and advice.

Choose among keeping, reducing, redeeming or switching

There is no universal correct action. Use the following decision framework after completing the comparisons and suitability review.

Possible action When it may be reasonable to examine Issues to resolve first
Keep and monitor The mandate remains clear, the portfolio is consistent with it, the long-period result is acceptable relative to the benchmark and peers, and the risk still fits your plan. Set a review date and specific evidence to check; do not rely on an assumption that a rebound must occur.
Reduce the position The fund still has a role but has grown too large, overlaps other holdings or creates more volatility than you want. Plan the target allocation, transaction costs and tax effect before selling units.
Redeem The objective no longer matches your goal, the mandate or execution has materially changed, or the risk is no longer acceptable. Check exit load, tax treatment, settlement timing and where the proceeds will be held.
Switch to another scheme You want a different strategy or category and have identified a replacement on objective, risk, cost and portfolio fit—not merely recent returns. A switch is normally a sale and purchase for tax and cost purposes; verify the rules and compare plans carefully.

Do not switch solely because another fund topped a recent ranking. A new fund can disappoint for the same reasons, and moving after a fall can lock in a loss without solving the underlying allocation problem.

Exit loads are scheme-specific

Read the current exit-load schedule for your exact scheme, plan and purchase date. As a dated example, SBI Mutual Fund’s factsheet for SBI Contra Fund reporting as of 31 May 2026 listed a 0.25% load for exits within 30 days, 0.10% for exits after 30 days and within 90 days, and nil after 90 days. These percentages apply only to that scheme and document date; they are not a rule for all contra funds. A later factsheet may change them.

Taxes depend on your facts

The tax result can depend on the type of fund, holding period, purchase lots, gains or losses, residency and the tax rules in force when you transact. The title alone does not provide enough information for a current Indian tax calculation. Obtain India-specific guidance for your circumstances and retain purchase statements, redemption confirmations and capital-gains reports.

Direct and regular plans

SEBI investor education distinguishes direct plans, purchased from the asset-management company without an intermediary, from regular plans distributed through intermediaries. Direct plans generally have lower expenses because intermediary commissions are not included. Regular plans may provide advice, paperwork and service, with higher expenses. Compare the cost saving with the value of the help you actually use; a lower expense ratio does not replace a sound asset-allocation decision.

A practical review process you can document

  1. Collect current documents. Download the latest factsheet, portfolio, scheme information and performance disclosure from the fund house or another official source.
  2. Record the mandate. Write down the investment objective, benchmark, category, plan type, expense ratio, riskometer, manager and any material changes.
  3. Build a like-for-like comparison. Capture benchmark and same-category peer returns for identical one-, three- and five-year periods where available, using the same return convention.
  4. Explain the gap. Review sector and stock exposures, concentration, cash levels, turnover, manager tenure and whether the portfolio reflects a contrarian approach.
  5. Test personal fit. Match the fund’s volatility and recovery uncertainty with your goal date, loss tolerance and other assets.
  6. Calculate the cost of action. Check the current exit load, tax consequences, transaction timing and the expense and risk of any replacement.
  7. Record the decision rule. State what evidence supports keeping, reducing, redeeming or switching and when you will review the position again. Avoid changing the rule merely because markets move next week.

Warning signs that deserve closer attention

  • The fund trails its benchmark and most same-category peers across multiple matching periods, not just a single quarter.
  • The portfolio no longer resembles the stated objective, or its concentration and volatility have increased materially.
  • The benchmark, manager or fundamental attributes changed and the historical record is being presented without that context.
  • Expenses are materially higher than comparable plans without a service benefit you value.
  • You cannot explain the fund’s role in your overall allocation or the loss you could tolerate.
  • You are being urged to act on a short-term ranking, a guaranteed-recovery claim or an unverified return projection.

None of these signals automatically dictates a sale. They identify questions that should be answered from current documents and your circumstances.

When professional help is worthwhile

Consider a SEBI-registered investment adviser if you need a written asset-allocation plan, have several overlapping holdings, face complicated tax lots, or cannot evaluate whether a replacement really fits your goals. Verify the adviser’s registration and understand fees and conflicts. An adviser can help structure the decision, but cannot remove market risk or guarantee that a contra strategy will recover.

The central test is straightforward: is the fund’s current strategy, risk, cost and portfolio role still justified for you when measured against its proper benchmark and peers? Answer that question with current evidence, then implement the least disruptive action that restores alignment with your plan.
