A crypto liquidation closes or reduces a leveraged position when the platform’s margin rules are triggered. Treat the event as both a security incident and a records problem: from a clean device, secure the exchange and email accounts, preserve every liquidation and collateral record, then reconcile the platform’s figures with your own wallet and bank history. Do not open another leveraged trade until you understand what happened.
- Change the exchange and email passwords, enable multifactor authentication (MFA), revoke unfamiliar sessions and API keys, and verify withdrawal addresses and account details.
- Save the liquidation notice, order and fill history, margin ledger, fees, mark-price information, collateral movements and timestamps before changing settings that might remove evidence.
- Export CSV and PDF records and keep offline copies, including wallet addresses, transaction hashes, bank transfers, screenshots and contemporaneous price evidence.
- Compare the liquidation with the platform contract and margin rules rather than assuming a universal liquidation price, appeal deadline or reimbursement right.
Secure the account before investigating the trade
Use a device you trust, ideally one that is updated and free of browser extensions you do not recognize. If you suspect malware or a compromised email account, do not investigate from the affected device. A liquidation can be a normal consequence of leverage, but an attacker who controls your exchange or email account may also change withdrawal settings, create API keys or remove evidence.

Change both passwords
Sign in through the exchange’s verified website or official app, not a link in an email or social-media message. Change the exchange password and the password for the email address attached to it. Use unique, long passwords; a password reused at another service can let an attacker bypass the exchange even when the liquidation itself was legitimate.

Enable MFA for the exchange and email accounts. Prefer an authenticator application or hardware security key where the service supports it. Review the exchange’s logged-in devices, active sessions, trusted devices and API-key pages. Revoke every session, key or withdrawal permission you do not recognize. Verify that the recovery email, phone number, two-factor method and withdrawal whitelist have not been changed.

The SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Assistance gives the essential custody warning: “Never share your private keys, or seed phrases.” It also recommends strong passwords and multifactor authentication for online crypto accounts. Those controls matter even when the liquidation was caused by market movement rather than theft.
Check account details and remaining balances
Confirm your legal name, contact details, beneficiary or recovery settings, linked bank accounts and saved withdrawal addresses. Review every asset that remains, including funds in spot wallets, derivatives wallets, earn or lending products and pending transfers. Do not approve a new withdrawal merely to “test” the account until you have captured the records and verified the destination address independently.
Preserve evidence before you dispute anything
Contact support only through the exchange’s verified website or app. Save the original liquidation notification and the page showing the affected position. Export records before changing leverage, collateral, API permissions or account settings; some interfaces show only a limited history after a position is closed.

- Order, execution and fill history, including partial fills.
- Margin or collateral ledger, transfers between wallets, funding payments and fees.

- Wallet addresses, transaction hashes, deposit and withdrawal records, bank transfers and contemporaneous market-price evidence.
- Terms of service, derivatives contract specifications and liquidation-policy pages in force when the trade occurred.
Keep the original downloads unchanged and make at least one offline copy. A separate copy protects you if the account is frozen or the platform later changes its interface. Record when you downloaded each file and the time zone used by the exchange.
Ask for a written explanation
If the numbers conflict, preserve the original files and ask official support to explain the discrepancy in writing. Request the exact trigger event, mark-price calculation, fills, fees, collateral transfers and any insurance-fund or auto-deleveraging treatment. Do not rely on a chat representative’s informal statement as the final record.

Reconcile the liquidation with the contract
There is no universal liquidation formula. The result depends on the platform, contract, margin mode, collateral asset, leverage, fees, funding and mark-price method. A liquidation normally closes or reduces a leveraged position under those rules; it does not necessarily execute at the last traded price shown on a chart.
Build a position reconciliation table
Use one row per contract or position and fill it from the exchange export, then compare it with your own records.

Compare three independent records
- Recalculate the position from the contract’s margin rules using the recorded collateral, leverage and mark price. Treat this as a check, not a substitute for the platform’s contract-specific calculation.
- Match exchange deposits and withdrawals to on-chain transaction hashes and wallet addresses.
- Match fiat deposits, withdrawals and conversions to bank records. Note fees and conversion rates separately rather than treating the bank amount as the crypto trade price.
A discrepancy does not by itself prove an error. Rounding, funding, partial fills, maintenance-margin tiers, mark-price updates and fees can produce a different result from a simple chart calculation. Ask support to identify the rule and transaction that explains each difference.
How to assess whether the liquidation price was correct
Start with the platform’s trigger, not the chart’s last price
Find the contract’s definition of liquidation and maintenance margin. Determine whether the platform uses a mark price, index price or another reference, and identify the data sources and update interval described in the contract. The price visible on a public chart may be a last-trade price and can differ from the trigger used for risk management.
Check the sequence of events
Put the mark-price updates, margin transfers, liquidation trigger and fills on one timeline. Check whether collateral was credited before the trigger, whether a partial close occurred, and whether fees or funding reduced available margin. Compare the stated trigger with the contract’s maintenance-margin tier for the actual position size; a formula for a small position may not apply to a larger one.

Check execution and loss allocation
Liquidation may close a position through multiple fills, and the average execution price can be different from the trigger price. Look for insurance-fund or auto-deleveraging entries in the ledger. The platform’s contract determines how any residual loss or surplus is handled. Do not infer a right to reimbursement or a universal appeal period from another exchange’s policy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat protection does not cover the loss
Investor.gov states that SIPC “does not protect you against losses caused by a decline in the market value of your securities nor does it protect for the loss of most crypto assets.” The SEC explains that non-security crypto assets are not protected by SIPA, so customers may face loss if a broker-dealer becomes insolvent. SIPC protection is therefore not a general guarantee for a leveraged crypto loss or an exchange balance.
Do not treat a platform’s proof-of-reserves report as an audit. The SEC investor bulletin says such reports “are not equivalent to financial statement audits and lack important investor protections provided by financial statement audits.” A reserves snapshot may not establish the platform’s liabilities, segregation practices, legal ownership of assets or ability to return customer property.

For U.S. taxpayers, keep records sufficient to establish each position on a federal return. Retain acquisition date and basis, proceeds, fees, transfer identifiers, wallet addresses, liquidation fills and evidence supporting the value used at each relevant time.
Reconcile broker reporting
The IRS says broker reporting on Form 1099-DA applies to certain digital-asset dispositions for transactions on or after January 1, 2025. Reconcile any form with your complete history. A form can omit self-custody transfers or show basis limitations, so do not copy its proceeds or basis into a return without checking the underlying transactions.

Do not assume every liquidation has the same tax character
The tax treatment of a forced liquidation, derivatives position and resulting loss depends on the instrument, how it was held and the taxpayer’s facts. A platform’s “realized P/L” label is not a tax conclusion. Obtain qualified tax advice for a material, unusual or cross-border position, and preserve the adviser’s calculations with the transaction records.
Protect assets that remain after the review
Once the account is secured and the records are complete, decide whether keeping all assets with the custodian still fits your risk tolerance. A hardware wallet is one self-custody option for assets that remain. It can reduce dependence on an exchange login, but it replaces custodian-access risk with irreversible key-management risk.
| Custody choice | Control of private keys | Main exposure | Recovery and backup | Fees and transfer friction |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Exchange custody | The custodian controls the keys; you control account credentials and withdrawal permissions | Account compromise, withdrawal restrictions and custodian insolvency | Account recovery, MFA and the custodian’s procedures | Exchange withdrawal fees, limits and processing rules |
| Hardware-wallet self-custody | You control the keys | Phishing, seed-phrase theft, and loss, damage or theft of the physical device | Secure seed-phrase backup and a tested recovery process | Network fees, device cost and transfer friction |
The SEC notes that physical cold-wallet devices can be lost, damaged or stolen. Never photograph or share the seed phrase. Store it offline, verify the receiving address on the device screen, and test recovery with a small amount before moving a larger balance. A wallet transfer is not a way to undo a liquidation; it protects only assets that still exist.
Choose a proportionate dispute path
First ask the platform for a written explanation and the underlying records. Then assess whether escalation is worthwhile using four questions:
- Evidence quality: Do your exports, timestamps, hashes and screenshots establish the alleged error?
- Contract: Does the platform’s governing agreement describe a calculation, exception or outage that fits the event?
- Jurisdiction and time limits: Which entity provided the service, where is it located, and what notice, arbitration or limitation terms apply? Do not assume a universal deadline.
- Amount at stake: Is the potential recovery large enough to justify professional legal or tax advice and the applicable filing costs?
Keep communications factual and attach copies, not your only originals. Do not grant a third party access to your account or seed phrase while seeking help. Legitimate support will not need your private keys.
Prevent a repeat
- Set leverage and collateral limits you can explain before opening a position.
- Know the maintenance-margin tiers, mark-price method, liquidation fees and auto-deleveraging rules for every contract you trade.
- Maintain a local transaction log rather than relying on the exchange interface alone.
- Review sessions, API keys, withdrawal addresses and MFA methods on a regular schedule.
- Keep a cash and unleveraged-asset reserve so a margin call does not force an emergency transfer.
- Pause leveraged trading whenever you cannot reproduce the platform’s balance and P/L from your own records.
The immediate objective is not to win back the loss. It is to secure access, preserve proof, establish exactly how the position was closed and report the event accurately. Only after those steps should you decide whether to contest the calculation, change custody or trade again.
