The safest way to assess a defence ETF during or after its new fund offer (NFO) is to verify four things in the latest documents: exactly what index the scheme follows, what the stated costs include, what the fund is actually charging now, and whether it can track and trade close to that index. An NFO document may show an estimated maximum expense, but that figure is not automatically the current total expense ratio (TER). Read the scheme information document (SID) with the statement of additional information (SAI), use the key information memorandum (KIM) as a summary, and then confirm live TER, tracking and trading data from current disclosures.
Start with the exact scheme and document set
Defence products can have similar names while using different structures, benchmarks, plans and cost policies. Begin by recording the fund’s complete legal name, whether it is an exchange-traded fund (ETF) or an index mutual fund, the plan (direct or regular), the option (growth or IDCW), and the date of every document you read.

- Download the latest SID. It contains the investment objective, benchmark, portfolio construction, replication method, risk factors, fees and load provisions. Check the version date and make sure it names the same scheme and plan you intend to buy.
- Read the SAI alongside the SID. The SID is not a complete legal description by itself. The SAI supplies common information about the asset-management company, trustees, valuation, investor services, conflicts and statutory matters that the SID incorporates by reference.
- Use the KIM for a quick cross-check. It condenses the SID into a shorter format, but it is not a substitute for the full SID and SAI. Compare its benchmark, riskometer, plans, loads and expense wording with the longer documents.
- Locate the current TER disclosure. The expense estimate in an NFO document can differ from the charge being applied after launch. Record the TER date, plan and option shown in the asset manager’s latest disclosure.
- Save the source versions. Keep PDFs or dated screenshots. Fees, risk labels, holdings and disclosure formats can change, so a later review should not silently mix old and new figures.
This document-matching step prevents a common error: applying a number from one plan, one launch document or one index fund to a different ETF.
Verify the mandate and benchmark before looking at cost
Identify the precise index
Write down the full benchmark name, including whether it is a total return index (TRI). The reviewed SEBI-filed SID identifies the Nifty India Defence Index (Total Return Index). A TRI assumes that distributions are reinvested, so it is the appropriate basis for comparing a fund’s NAV with the index’s published return. A fund that names a price index, a TRI or a different defence basket is not making the same tracking promise.

Read the eligibility and selection rules
The same scheme summary describes eligible securities as coming from the Nifty Total Market universe, meeting specified industry and revenue criteria, and being selected using six-month average free-float market capitalisation. That methodology determines which companies qualify and how investable size is measured. Do not assume another defence ETF uses those rules; sector labels do not make two indices interchangeable.
Check replication and tracking language
Look for whether the portfolio intends physical replication, sampling or another permitted approach. Note any qualification that tracking error may arise from cash balances, corporate actions, rebalancing, taxes, transaction costs or regulatory limits. The objective is usually to track the index before expenses, not to outperform it. A carefully worded qualification is not evidence of poor management; it tells you what difference the documents consider normal.
Read risk, plan, option and load provisions
Riskometer and concentration
A defence index is thematic exposure, not a diversified substitute for a broad-market fund. The reviewed Axis Nifty India Defence Index Fund page and the ETF page reviewed both display a “Very High” risk label. Concentration in one industry can make the NAV more sensitive to government orders, procurement cycles, export restrictions, regulation, interest rates and company-specific events. Treat the riskometer as a required disclosure, not as a forecast of returns.

Confirm whether you are viewing a direct plan or a regular plan. The two plans can have different expense ratios because regular plans include distribution remuneration. Never compare a direct-plan TER with a regular-plan TER and call one scheme cheaper without adjusting for the plan.
Growth and IDCW options
Check whether the scheme offers growth and income-distribution-cum-withdrawal (IDCW) options, and read the current wording on distributions. The reviewed SID describes both growth and IDCW options. An option label does not change the underlying index mandate, but it can change cash-flow handling and the NAV path.
Entry and exit loads
Read the load table for the exact scheme. One reviewed SEBI-hosted SID describes nil exit load for that scheme, while also directing investors to verify the current terms. Do not transfer that result to another defence product or to a later amended document. ETFs may also involve brokerage and exchange charges when you buy or sell units, even when the scheme’s exit-load field is nil.

Separate the NFO estimate from the live TER
An NFO SID may state a ceiling or estimate so investors can understand the proposed cost structure before the fund has an operating history. The reviewed Motilal Oswal Nifty India Defence ETF SID from 2025 states an estimated maximum base expense ratio of up to 0.90% of daily net assets and tells investors to consult the asset manager’s website for actual current expenses. This is a scheme-specific document estimate, not a universal defence-ETF rate and not proof of the charge being levied today.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen recording a TER, capture all of the following in the same row of your worksheet:
- Scheme, plan and option.
- Effective date or publication date of the TER disclosure.
- Whether the figure is a base expense ratio, a total expense ratio or an NFO maximum.
- Whether goods and services tax (GST), statutory levies, brokerage and transaction costs are included.
- Any separate charge or regulatory cap described in the SID.
Only compare figures that use the same definitions. A lower-looking base expense can become a higher all-in cost if another document includes items that the first excludes.
Find costs that may sit outside the base expense ratio
The reviewed SID says certain brokerage costs, transaction costs and statutory levies may be charged in addition to the base expense ratio, subject to the terms and regulatory limits described there. This does not mean every period will incur the same amount; it means the base TER alone may not capture every cost affecting NAV or trading.
Read the cost section for language about:
- Brokerage and securities-transaction expenses arising from portfolio trades.
- Transaction costs associated with purchases, sales, rebalancing or creation and redemption of ETF units.
- GST or other statutory levies applied to management or transaction services.
- Permitted limits, exclusions and the method used to disclose these amounts.
For a fair comparison, label each number as “base TER,” “reported TER” or “other permitted cost” rather than combining unlike figures. If a document does not state a comparable amount, write “not stated” and identify the document and date instead of estimating it.

Account for a new scheme’s missing history
A newly launched scheme cannot demonstrate a long-run realized TER, tracking difference or trading record. The Axis Nifty India Defence Index Fund KIM says actual expense data for the financial year ended March 31, 2026 was not applicable because the scheme was new. It directs readers to the asset manager’s TER disclosure and the SID for full details.

That disclosure has two implications:
- An NFO estimate describes intended or permitted costs; it does not establish what investors will pay over several years.
- The absence of a prior-year figure is not evidence that costs were zero or that tracking was perfect. It means the required operating history did not yet exist for that period.
Use the first available full-period TER and tracking disclosures after launch, and keep the observation period consistent when comparing funds.
Measure tracking with two different statistics
Tracking difference
Tracking difference is the gap between the index return and the fund’s return over a stated period. It answers, “How far behind or ahead did the fund finish?” Expenses, taxes, cash drag, rebalancing, corporate actions and other implementation effects can all contribute. Compare the same benchmark return convention, period and NAV basis.
Tracking error
Tracking error measures the variability of the fund’s deviations from the index. It answers, “How consistently did the fund stay near the index?” A fund can have a small average tracking difference but large day-to-day variation, or a stable pattern of modest underperformance. The reviewed KIM describes regular tracking-error and tracking-difference disclosures; record both when available.

|---|---|---|
| Tracking difference | What was the cumulative return gap? | Index and NAV returns, period, benchmark convention and sign of the difference. |
| Tracking error | How variable were the deviations? | Reported calculation period, frequency and the fund’s stated methodology. |
Do not compare one fund’s six-month statistic with another fund’s three-year statistic, or mix a TRI benchmark with a price-index figure. If a fund has no published history, mark the field “not stated” rather than inferring quality from the NFO estimate.
Assess the ETF’s real trading cost and ease of execution
An ETF’s document fees do not tell you whether units are easy to buy or sell on an exchange. Before placing an order, check current assets under management (AUM), traded volume and the bid–ask spread for the exchange and session you will use. These figures change daily and should be captured with a timestamp.
AUM
A larger asset base can support operations and market-making, but AUM alone does not guarantee a tight spread or continuous liquidity. Look for the latest exchange or asset-manager disclosure and note the date.

Volume and order book
Review recent traded volume rather than a single exceptional day. Thin volume can make a market order expensive or difficult to execute. Consider a limit order and verify that the quantity visible at your price is adequate.
Bid–ask spread
The spread is an immediate trading cost: you typically buy near the ask and sell near the bid. Observe the spread at the time you plan to trade, not only at market open or close. The available documents do not establish comparable live AUM, volume, spreads or current TER figures for every defence ETF, so obtain those values from current asset-manager, exchange and AMFI disclosures before publishing a head-to-head comparison.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use a like-for-like comparison table
When reviewing more than one scheme, build a table with one date and one plan basis. The following fields prevent the most common mismatches:
| Comparison axis | Evidence to capture | If unavailable |
|---|---|---|
| Index and eligibility | Exact index name, TRI or price index, universe, industry or revenue tests and selection measure. | Write “not stated” with the document date. |
| Structure and replication | ETF or index-fund structure, physical or sampled replication and tracking qualifications. | Do not infer the method from the product name. |
| Plan-specific cost | Current TER, plan, option, effective date and whether it is base or total. | Use the latest dated disclosure, not an old NFO page. |
| Additional costs | Brokerage, transaction costs, GST and statutory-levy treatment. | Mark the component “not stated”; do not assume zero. |
| Tracking record | Tracking difference and tracking error over matching periods. | Mark history as unavailable for a new scheme. |
| Trading conditions | AUM, recent volume and bid–ask spread with timestamp. | Fetch current exchange data before drawing a conclusion. |
| Risk and investor terms | Riskometer, concentration, loads, direct or regular plan and growth or IDCW option. | Return to the current SID and KIM. |
This format lets you distinguish a genuinely lower ongoing cost from a merely lower NFO estimate, and a liquid ETF from one that is inexpensive only on paper.
A practical review workflow
- Freeze the review date. Write the date and market close time for every live figure.
- Match the legal identity. Confirm scheme name, ETF or index-fund structure, plan and option across SID, SAI and KIM.
- Copy the benchmark wording. Include “Total Return Index” where applicable and record the eligibility methodology.
- Extract investor terms. Record riskometer, loads, plan choices and option choices exactly as disclosed.
- Separate cost layers. Put the NFO estimate, current TER and permitted outside costs in different columns.
- Check operating history. Note whether a full financial-year TER and tracking series exists; if not, label the gap.
- Collect tracking data. Use equal periods and the same benchmark convention for tracking difference and tracking error.
- Check execution conditions. Capture AUM, volume and spread immediately before making an ETF order.
- Write a qualified conclusion. State what is established, what remains unavailable and which figures may change.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Treating an NFO ceiling as today’s charge
Why it fails: The ceiling is an estimate or permitted maximum in a launch document. Correction: cite the current plan-specific TER disclosure and keep the estimate in a separate historical column.
Recommended Free Tools
Calling every defence product an ETF
Why it fails: The Axis example is an index mutual fund, not an ETF. Correction: label the structure first; then compare only products with comparable trading and cost mechanics.

Comparing unlike benchmarks
Why it fails: A TRI and a price index produce different return bases, and different eligibility rules produce different portfolios. Correction: reproduce the exact benchmark and methodology before comparing performance or tracking.
Using the base TER as an all-in trading cost
Why it fails: Brokerage, transaction costs and statutory levies may be treated separately under the SID. Correction: list each component and disclose when a component is not stated.
Ignoring execution friction
Why it fails: A narrow document fee does not compensate for a wide bid–ask spread or thin volume. Correction: inspect current order-book conditions and use a limit order when appropriate.
Filling missing history with assumptions
Why it fails: A new scheme has no realized long-run TER or tracking record. Correction: mark the statistic unavailable and revisit after comparable periods are disclosed.
What your final assessment should establish
A defensible review should let a reader answer four separate questions: What index and portfolio rules am I buying? Which plan and option am I using? What is the latest actual TER, and which costs sit outside it? How closely and how easily can the product follow and trade against its benchmark?
If any answer depends only on an NFO estimate, an undated page or a different product structure, say so plainly. A defence ETF’s suitability cannot be established from a single expense number: the benchmark, concentration, plan terms, realized tracking and live trading conditions all belong in the same dated record.
