The right start month depends on your personalized benefit estimates, birth year, earnings record, plans to keep working, household eligibility, health coverage and need for income. Before you submit an application, compare your own estimates in your my Social Security account and work through the checklist below.
1. Compare your benefit estimates at several start ages
Retirement benefits can generally begin at age 62. Starting before your full retirement age permanently reduces the monthly amount. Delaying after full retirement age raises the benefit month by month until age 70; waiting beyond 70 does not add delayed-retirement credits.

Social Security Administration guidance describes the decision as personal. Its filing-rules page states: “Determining when to start your Social Security benefits is a personal decision.” Do not choose an age from a rule of thumb or an average benefit figure. Use the estimate generated from your own earnings record.
- Sign in to your my Social Security account.
- Review the retirement estimate and change the proposed claiming age to compare starts between 62 and 70.
- Record the monthly amount, the start month and the assumptions about future earnings.
- Compare the earlier income with the higher amount available after a delay.
Your comparison should include more than the check amount. Ask how many months of payments you would receive sooner, whether you will still be working, whether earnings could cause withholding before full retirement age, and how the choice fits with other retirement income and household benefits. The adjustment for early or delayed claiming is lasting, so the decision affects every future payment rather than only the first year.

Social Security says that claiming at 62 can reduce a benefit by as much as 30% below the full-retirement-age amount when full retirement age is 67. That is a maximum example, not a prediction of your personal reduction. Your account estimate is the relevant number.
2. Confirm your full retirement age separately from Medicare age
Full retirement age is determined by your birth year, not by the age at which Medicare generally begins. Social Security says people attaining age 62 in 2026 have a full retirement age of 67; people born in 1960 or later also have a full retirement age of 67. Check the agency’s table for your date of birth rather than assuming that age 65 is your full retirement age.
Medicare eligibility remains generally age 65, three years before a full retirement age of 67. Turning 65 therefore creates a separate health-coverage deadline. A Social Security claiming decision does not by itself determine when you should enroll in Medicare.
| Milestone | What it means | How to use it before filing |
|---|---|---|
| 62 | Earliest ordinary age described by SSA for retirement benefits | Compare the permanent reduction with your need for income and other resources. |
| Full retirement age | Birth-year-based point at which early-claim reductions end and the earnings-test rules change | Verify your exact age from your date of birth; for people reaching 62 in 2026, it is 67. |
| 65 | General Medicare eligibility age | Plan Medicare enrollment independently of your Social Security start date. |
| 70 | Age at which delayed-retirement credits stop increasing the retirement benefit | There is no additional delayed-credit increase for waiting past 70. |
3. Audit the earnings record behind your estimate
Social Security calculates retirement benefits using your highest 35 years of earnings. If you have fewer than 35 years with earnings, years with no earnings can enter the calculation as zeros and lower the average. Continuing to work can add a new year and replace a lower-earning year, potentially increasing the eventual benefit.

Before relying on an estimate, inspect the earnings history in your account year by year. Look for missing employers, an incorrect amount, or a year that does not match your tax records. The general calculation rule does not prove that an individual record is accurate. If you find an error, contact Social Security and provide supporting records before choosing a start month. Keep copies of wage statements, tax returns and correspondence.
- Check every reported year, especially years when you changed employers or worked for yourself.
- Identify whether planned future work could replace a zero or low-earning year in your 35-year calculation.
- Run the estimate again after correcting a record or adding expected earnings.
4. Calculate how continued work could affect payments
If you claim before full retirement age and continue to work, Social Security’s retirement earnings test can temporarily withhold benefits. The test counts wages and net earnings from self-employment, not every kind of income.
| 2026 situation | Earnings limit | Withholding formula |
|---|---|---|
| Under full retirement age for the entire year | $24,480 annually | $1 in benefits withheld for every $2 of wages or net self-employment earnings above the limit. |
| Year you reach full retirement age, before the month you reach it | $65,160 for earnings before that month | $1 in benefits withheld for every $3 above the limit; only earnings before the full-retirement-age month count. |
| From the month you reach full retirement age | No earnings-test reduction | Earnings no longer reduce benefits under this test. |
These are Social Security’s 2026 thresholds and can change each year. Recheck the limits for the calendar year in which you claim. The agency reviews your benefit at full retirement age and credits months in which payments were withheld, so withholding is not necessarily a permanent loss of those months.

The earnings test does not count investment income, pensions, annuities, interest, veterans benefits, or other government or military retirement benefits. It is based on the kinds of earned income described above, so classify your income correctly before estimating a withholding amount.

The first-year monthly rule
Social Security also describes a special monthly rule, usually relevant in the first year you begin benefits. In its 2026 publication, a person under full retirement age is treated as retired for a month when earnings are $2,040 or less. Self-employed beneficiaries face a service-based test as well as an earnings test. Because the threshold and its application are year-specific, ask Social Security to apply the rule to your actual start month, work pattern and self-employment facts before depending on it.
5. Check spouse, former-spouse and survivor eligibility
Marital history can change both the application rules and the household result. Ask whether you could qualify on a current spouse’s record, a former spouse’s record or a deceased spouse’s record. Do not assume that filing for your own retirement benefit automatically captures every family benefit for which you may qualify.
Deemed filing
For covered birth cohorts, deemed-filing rules can require a person who applies for a retirement benefit to apply for a spouse benefit at the same time, subject to statutory exceptions. Eligibility and exceptions depend on your birth date and circumstances. Confirm the rule with Social Security when you discuss the application.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSurvivor benefits
Survivor benefits are handled separately from deemed filing. A surviving spouse may be able to start a survivor benefit independently of their own retirement benefit and make a different decision about when to claim each. The precise options depend on entitlement and age, so ask Social Security to evaluate both records rather than selecting a strategy from marital status alone.

- Ask Social Security which applications are required and which benefits can be filed independently.
- Compare the effect of your start month on a spouse’s or survivor’s future benefit, not only your own check.
6. Coordinate Social Security with Medicare
Do not treat full retirement age as your Medicare enrollment age. Medicare generally begins at 65, while your Social Security full retirement age may be 67. Determine when and how to enroll in Medicare based on your age, current employer coverage and other applicable enrollment rules.
Part B premiums may be deducted directly from a Social Security payment. That deduction reduces the amount deposited to you even though it does not change the gross retirement benefit estimate. Include the premium in your cash-flow calculation and confirm the current premium and enrollment instructions through Medicare and Social Security.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Estimate taxes and your actual net payment
Social Security benefits may be taxable. Whether tax applies and how much is due depends on your complete income and filing situation, not just the benefit estimate. Use current Internal Revenue Service guidance or qualified tax advice for your circumstances; the general claiming rules cannot determine an individual tax liability.
Build a net-payment worksheet with:
- the gross monthly amount shown in your SSA estimate;
- any Part B premium or other authorized deduction;
- estimated federal and, where applicable, state income tax;
- income from work, pensions, investments and other retirement sources; and
- the month in which cash will actually arrive.
8. Pick the start month based on payment timing
Social Security generally pays a benefit in the month after the month for which it is due. SSA’s example is straightforward: if you request benefits to start in May, the first check arrives in June. Make sure you are eligible for the entitlement month you select and allow for the one-month payment lag when planning bills or a bridge from employment to retirement.

- Choose the entitlement month in your application.
- Confirm that you meet the age and other eligibility requirements for that month.
- Count forward to the expected payment month rather than treating the entitlement month as the deposit date.
- Keep the confirmation and check your payment schedule after approval.
9. Use a decision worksheet before submitting
A one-page comparison can expose a problem that a single estimate hides. Create a row for each start age you are seriously considering and fill in the figures from your SSA account.
| Question | What to record |
|---|---|
| Monthly benefit | Your personalized SSA estimate for that start age. |
| Earlier-payment value | How many months of payments you would receive before a later option begins. |
| Work plan | Expected wages or net self-employment earnings before full retirement age and possible withholding. |
| Household effect | Spouse, former-spouse and survivor eligibility, plus any deemed-filing requirement. |
| Health coverage | Medicare timing, other coverage and the potential Part B deduction. |
| Net cash flow | Taxes, deductions and the month money will reach your account. |
| Contingency | What happens if work ends earlier, lasts longer or your income changes. |
Do not turn this worksheet into a universal break-even rule. A break-even age depends on the estimates, taxes, health, longevity, earnings and family circumstances specific to you. The official materials establish the comparison factors, not one answer for everyone.
10. Final pre-submission checklist
- Have you compared personalized estimates for more than one start age between 62 and 70?
- Have you verified full retirement age from your birth year rather than using age 65?
- Have you reviewed all 35 years, including possible zero-earning years, in your earnings record?
- Have you estimated wages or net self-employment earnings for the claiming year and checked the current earnings-test limits?
- Have you asked whether the first-year monthly rule applies to your work pattern?
- Have you checked current-spouse, former-spouse and survivor eligibility and any deemed-filing requirement?
- Have you separated Medicare enrollment from Social Security claiming and budgeted for Part B deductions?
- Have you considered potential taxation and calculated a net, rather than gross, payment?
- Have you selected an entitlement month while accounting for payment arriving the following month?
- Have you saved your estimates and supporting records and contacted Social Security about any unresolved issue?
For a straightforward case, the official account tools and application provide the core information. Complicated earnings histories, self-employment, multiple marriages, survivor claims or competing cash-flow needs may justify individualized guidance from Social Security or a qualified retirement professional. No private service is endorsed by Social Security merely because it offers claiming analysis.
