Do not click Buy until you have verified five things: the exact model and measurements, the complete delivery route, utility and installation requirements, the appliance’s estimated running cost, and the seller’s delivery, damage, return and warranty terms. A unit can fit the cabinet opening yet fail to pass through a doorway, require a connection your home lacks, or cost more to install and operate than its headline price suggests.
The five-minute pre-order checklist
- Identify the exact model number. Do not rely on a product family name or a similar photograph. Dimensions, fittings, energy data and included parts can differ between regional or capacity variants.
- Measure the space and the route. Record height, width and depth at the installation point, then measure doors, hallways, stairs, landings and tight turns on the way there.
- Check utilities and installation conditions. Confirm electrical supply, water, drainage, gas (if applicable), ventilation, shut-off valves and any required clearances in the model manual.
- Calculate the real cost. Add delivery, installation, connection parts, haul-away, taxes, financing charges and estimated energy use to the purchase price.
- Read the transaction terms. Verify who is selling the appliance, what delivery includes, how quickly damage must be reported, who pays return costs and where warranty service is handled.
These checks apply everywhere, but energy-label rules and consumer rights depend on your country and the particular seller. Treat every deadline and service promise on a marketplace listing as seller-specific.

1. Verify the exact model and measure twice
Measure the installation space
Use a tape measure rather than the retailer’s rounded “fits standard kitchens” wording. Record the narrowest height, width and depth, including skirting boards, countertops, pipes, wall irregularities and trim. Compare those measurements with the model’s published dimensions, not just the shipping-carton size. Leave the manufacturer’s specified ventilation and service clearances; a refrigerator or air conditioner that is squeezed into a cavity may not operate correctly or may be impossible to service.
Check how the appliance opens. A refrigerator door may need clearance to swing past a wall, and a washing-machine lid or front door must open far enough to load it. For a split or window air conditioner, confirm the mounting or window dimensions and the clearances stated for that exact model. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission advises measuring for full door or lid opening and ventilation, not merely the footprint; see its EnergyGuide shopping guidance.

Measure the delivery route
Measure every restriction from the curb or loading area to the final location: building entrance, lift, corridor, doorway, staircase, landing and the sharpest turn. Include door stops and handrails, and note whether doors can be removed safely. Compare the smallest route width and height with the packaged and unpackaged appliance dimensions. Ask the delivery provider whether the team will unpack the unit before a tight passage, whether a second person is required and whether an external lift or special access fee applies.
A model that fits the appliance bay can still be undeliverable. Save your measurements and the model’s specification sheet with the order so you can show what was checked if the delivery team refuses access.
Confirm opening, ventilation and service space
Do not treat the listed depth as the complete operating footprint. Account for door or lid movement, rear hoses and power cords, side clearances for ventilation, and the space a technician needs to remove panels. If the manual gives a minimum gap, use that figure rather than a retailer’s generic diagram.

2. Confirm utilities and installation conditions
Electrical requirements
Check voltage, frequency, plug type, circuit rating and whether the manual requires a dedicated circuit or a grounded outlet. Do not assume an adapter or extension lead is acceptable. Complex electrical work may require a qualified professional; the appliance delivery and installation guide from Whirlpool cautions that plumbing and electrical modifications can exceed ordinary delivery service.

Water, drainage and gas
Washing machines need the correct inlet fittings, water pressure and drain arrangement. Refrigerators with an ice maker or dispenser may need a shut-off valve and a particular water line. For certain refrigerator installations, Frigidaire specifies a working shut-off valve and a water line within six feet on the same floor; that is a model-specific condition, not a universal refrigerator rule. Verify your model at Frigidaire’s delivery-preparation page and in the manual.
If an appliance uses gas, confirm the permitted gas type, shut-off location, ventilation and who is authorized to connect it. Never infer that an existing hose, valve or connector is compatible because it looks similar.
Find out what “installation” actually includes
Retailers use “installation” to mean different things. Ask in writing whether the quoted service covers placement, levelling, connection, testing, wall or window mounting, sealing, removal of packaging and removal of the old appliance. Hoses, plugs, vents, brackets and other parts may be excluded or sold separately. The major-appliance purchase and returns guide lists accessories such as hoses, plugs and vents as items buyers may need to obtain; match every part to the exact model and local installation rules.

3. Read energy information as a lifetime-cost estimate
Compare only models that pass your fit and installation checks. Then use the energy label and product information required in your market. A cheaper appliance can be the more expensive choice if it consumes substantially more electricity or requires costly installation.

For your own budget, use a simple total-cost calculation: purchase price + delivery and installation + required parts + expected energy cost over your planned ownership period + likely service or disposal costs − any confirmed rebates. Treat the label’s running-cost number as an estimate, not a promise. Use your electricity rate and realistic frequency of use when making a household budget.
4. Check the listing and whether the appliance suits your household
Insist on complete product information
Before ordering, the page should state the exact model number, dimensions, capacity, required connections, energy information, included components and warranty route. If any of those are missing, ask the seller for the manual or specification sheet. Do not infer that a similarly named model has the same fittings, door swing, dimensions or energy class.

Choose capacity according to household size, load frequency and the items you routinely wash, chill or cool. List the functions you will actually use—such as particular wash cycles, cooling or heating modes, dispenser features or controls—and verify that the model provides them. Paying for capacity or features that do not fit your routine raises the upfront cost without solving a household need.

Check accessories and repairability
Look for hoses, power cords, drain kits, vents, mounting hardware and other consumables in the “in the box” list. If an accessory is separate, identify its required fitting and specification before purchase; a generic part is not automatically compatible. Consumer Protection New Zealand recommends researching repairability and common failures with repairers, as well as reading reviews and the seller’s complaint process. An appliance that is difficult to repair can create a larger long-term cost even when its energy use is attractive.

Identify who is responsible
On a marketplace, the platform, marketplace seller, delivery contractor and manufacturer may each handle a different problem. Record the legal seller name, contact method, delivery provider and warranty contact shown at checkout. An overseas retailer can be harder to pursue if a dispute arises; New Zealand Consumer Protection highlights that practical limitation in its pre-purchase guidance.
Confirm delivery scope and timing
Check the delivery window, building-access rules, stairs or lift charges, placement limits, connection service, old-appliance removal and packaging disposal. Ask what happens if access fails or the delivery is delayed. Keep the promised service description and appointment confirmation with your order records.
Understand damage, returns and cancellation
Read the procedure for visible damage, concealed damage, missing parts, wrong-model delivery and a failed installation. Note the reporting channel, required photographs, deadlines, collection arrangements and who pays return freight. A seller’s deadline is not automatically the legal deadline in your jurisdiction. For example, Walmart’s policy states a 48-hour window for reporting damage or defects after acceptance under that policy; check the actual terms attached to your order rather than applying 48 hours universally.

Check warranty and service access
Find out whether warranty work is in-home, depot-based or handled only through the seller. Confirm geographic coverage, labour and parts duration, exclusions for incorrect installation, and whether registering the product is required. Save the invoice, model and serial numbers, manual and all correspondence.
6. Compare shortlisted models on the same axes

Reject a listing that omits the model number, dimensions, required connections, energy information or included components until the seller supplies them. A low price is not a saving if the appliance cannot be installed or returned economically.
7. Appliance-specific checks
Fridge or freezer
- Measure door swing, hinge side and the clearance needed to remove drawers or shelves.
- Confirm ventilation gaps and the route for any water line.
- For ice makers or dispensers, verify the shut-off valve, line length and same-floor condition where the manual requires them.
- Decide whether the old refrigerator will be removed and how food will be protected during installation.
Air conditioner
- Confirm whether the model is intended for your window, wall or other mounting arrangement and measure the opening or mounting surface.
- Check electrical load, ventilation, drainage or condensate handling and any required brackets, seals or hoses.
- Verify who performs mounting, sealing and testing; these tasks may not be included in ordinary delivery.
- Use the regional energy label or product information for the exact model rather than comparing a different capacity or climate rating.
Washing machine
- Measure door opening and depth with hoses connected, not just the cabinet depth.
- Confirm hot- or cold-water configuration, inlet fittings, water pressure, drain height and a level floor.
- Check whether inlet hoses, drain extensions, stacking hardware or transit-bolt removal are included.
- Ask how installation handles leaks, levelling and removal of the old machine.
8. What to do on delivery day
- Keep the order accessible. Have the model number, delivery confirmation and service terms ready.
- Inspect before acceptance where the policy allows. Check cartons, panels, doors, controls, displays, hoses and visible dents or cracks.
- Photograph damage and labels. Capture the damage, packaging, model and serial number, and the delivery condition.
- Record exceptions on the delivery document. Do not sign a statement that says “undamaged” if it is not accurate.
- Report problems through the specified channel immediately. Follow the seller’s stated deadline and retain confirmation numbers, emails and photographs.
- Do not connect an appliance that fails the manual’s requirements. Stop and ask the seller or a qualified installer rather than improvising a fitting or electrical connection.
Once installed, keep the receipt, energy information, manual, warranty registration, serial number and service records together. Those documents support a return, warranty claim, resale or insurance claim.

- The listing has no exact model number or omits dimensions and connection requirements.
- The appliance only fits if you ignore the manufacturer’s clearance or opening instructions.
- The delivery route has a restriction that the provider will not confirm in writing.
- Required installation parts or professional work are unavailable or cost more than your budget allows.
- The seller will not explain damage reporting, return freight, warranty handling or who is responsible for installation.
- The energy information is missing, uses a different regional scale, or is for a different capacity or variant.
Pause the purchase until the missing fact is documented. Spending a little longer on verification is cheaper than paying to return a heavy appliance that cannot enter the home or be connected safely.
