What to Check Before Investing in a Regular-Plan Mutual Fund

By TheFinanceBase Team 8 min read

Before buying a regular-plan mutual fund, check two separate decisions: whether the underlying scheme fits your goal and risk capacity, and whether the distributor’s service justifies the plan’s higher ongoing cost. A regular plan uses an intermediary; a direct plan does not. Both plans of the same scheme hold the same portfolio and use the same fund manager, but their expense ratios and NAVs differ.

Use the checklist below in order. Verify live scheme documents, costs, holdings and intermediary credentials before submitting money.

1. Understand what a regular plan actually changes

A regular plan is bought through an intermediary such as a mutual-fund distributor. The intermediary may help you select a scheme, complete transactions and review holdings, depending on the service offered. A direct plan is purchased without that distributor relationship, so you research, select and execute the investment yourself or obtain advice separately.

The plan choice does not change the underlying portfolio within a scheme. According to the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI), regular and direct plans share the portfolio and fund manager. They differ in expense ratios and NAVs because regular-plan expenses include distribution-related costs.

Feature Regular plan Direct plan
How you buy Through a distributor or other intermediary Without a mutual-fund distributor
Portfolio and fund manager Same for the corresponding scheme
Ongoing expense ratio Higher, including distribution-related costs Lower than the corresponding regular plan, subject to the current scheme disclosure
Investor support May include distributor guidance and transaction help; confirm what is actually provided You research and execute independently, or arrange separate advice
NAV Different from the direct plan’s NAV Different from the regular plan’s NAV

A regular plan can be reasonable when you value continuing help and understand its cost. It is not a lower-risk version of the same scheme.

2. Start with your goal, deadline and ability to absorb loss

Do not begin with a distributor’s product list. Write down what the money is for, when you may need it and how much volatility your household finances can withstand. SEBI investor guidance says to consider risk-taking capacity, age and financial position. Your ability to tolerate a temporary fall may be different from your ability to withstand a permanent loss or a forced sale before the goal date.

Questions to answer before looking at a scheme

  • What specific goal will this investment fund?
  • When could you need some or all of the money?
  • What other savings, income and emergency reserves are available?
  • What loss could you bear without abandoning the plan at the worst time?
  • Would a sharp fall force you to sell, borrow or postpone the goal?

Mutual funds are not guaranteed-return products. Their value can rise or fall, and you can lose principal. AMFI states, “Mutual Fund Schemes are not guaranteed or assured return products” in its risk guidance. A distributor, regular plan or familiar fund house does not remove market, credit or liquidity risk.

3. Identify the intermediary and the service you will receive

Ask the person or platform to state clearly whether it is acting as a mutual-fund distributor, what work is included after the purchase and how it is compensated. “Guidance” can mean anything from an application-form service to periodic portfolio reviews, so obtain a specific description rather than assuming ongoing advice.

Credentials to verify

  • Mutual-fund distributors should have relevant NISM certification and an AMFI Registration Number (ARN).
  • Employees who distribute schemes should have the required certification and an Employee Unique Identification Number (EUIN).
  • Check that the ARN or EUIN shown on your application and transaction records belongs to the person or organisation handling your investment.

Registration and certification identify an intermediary; they do not prove that a recommendation is suitable for your goal. Ask the intermediary to explain why the scheme’s objective, asset mix, risk and costs fit your circumstances, and ask what alternatives were considered.

AMFI describes asset-management-company distributor due diligence as including experience, regulatory history and controls. It also notes the importance of separating customer-risk evaluation and scheme-suitability work from sales processes. Those controls are useful safeguards, but you should still make your own suitability check and retain the explanation you received.

4. Compare the current cost of the exact regular and direct plans

The total expense ratio (TER) is a recurring scheme expense deducted from the fund’s assets. Because it reduces the return left for investors, compare the current TER for the regular plan with the current TER for the direct plan of the same scheme. Use the latest scheme disclosure rather than a historical article, an industry average or a remembered number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to record

  • The scheme name and exact plan (regular or direct).
  • The option, such as growth or an income-distribution option, shown in the application.
  • The latest TER for each plan and the date on which it applies.
  • Any entry, exit or other load disclosed for the transaction.
  • Whether the stated charge is recurring, conditional or a one-time transaction cost.

Do not treat a generic TER gap as a quote for a particular fund. TERs can change, and the applicable figure depends on the exact scheme and plan. Read the current offer documents and expense disclosures immediately before investing.

Find the commission actually recorded for your holding

AMFI says the half-yearly Consolidated Account Statement (CAS) reports the actual commission paid by the asset-management company or mutual fund against your holdings in each scheme. Use your own latest CAS to see the amount recorded for your investment. Do not infer a distributor’s compensation from a sales conversation or assume that every intermediary receives the same amount.

5. Read the scheme documents before signing

SEBI’s investor education page advises, “An investor, before investing in a scheme, should carefully read the offer document.” Read the current scheme information document (SID), key information memorandum (KIM) and any relevant addenda or updates issued by the asset-management company. The documents describe the scheme; they do not decide whether it belongs in your portfolio.

Extract these facts from the documents

Document check What to establish
Investment objective What the scheme is designed to invest in and the limits that apply
Asset types and strategy Whether it uses equity, debt or other permitted assets, and how it may change exposure
Risk factors Market, liquidity, issuer-credit, interest-rate and other stated risks
Initial and recurring expenses TER, loads and other charges that can reduce your result
Fund manager Qualifications, experience and the manager’s stated responsibilities
Fund-house record Performance of other schemes and the sponsor’s track record, interpreted in context
Legal and regulatory information Pending litigation, penalties or other disclosures relevant to the sponsor or fund house

Save the version you read, including the date and any addendum. If a distributor’s explanation conflicts with the document, pause the transaction and obtain clarification in writing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Test the scheme’s risk, holdings and concentration

Match the scheme’s stated objective and risk disclosures to your time horizon and loss capacity. Then inspect the disclosed portfolio rather than relying only on the category name. Look at the types of securities, major positions, sector or issuer concentration and how much of the portfolio could be difficult to sell in stressed conditions.

Risks that need separate attention

  • Equity schemes: share prices can fall sharply, and liquidity can deteriorate when markets are stressed.
  • Debt schemes: issuers may fail to pay, and interest-rate changes can reduce bond prices; liquidity can also be limited.
  • Concentrated portfolios: a small number of issuers, sectors or securities can make losses more severe when one exposure goes wrong.

A regular plan does not diversify, hedge or otherwise alter these exposures. The same scheme portfolio is used for its direct counterpart, so the investment decision must stand on the scheme’s own objective and risk characteristics.

7. Compare performance on a like-for-like basis

Compare a scheme with funds in the same category and with an appropriate benchmark. Review more than one period—such as short, medium and longer periods available in the current disclosure—and consider the risk taken, expenses and portfolio alongside returns.

Comparisons to avoid

  • Choosing because the NAV is lower than another scheme’s NAV.
  • Choosing a new scheme because its initial NAV appears inexpensive.
  • Picking the most recent return leader without checking the period, benchmark or volatility.
  • Comparing schemes with different objectives, asset mixes or risk levels.

SEBI explains that a lower or higher NAV among similar schemes has no relevance by itself. Past returns describe what happened during a particular period; they are not a promise about your future result. A fair comparison asks whether the scheme delivered its objective relative to an appropriate benchmark after costs and with a risk level you can live with.

8. Complete KYC and verify the transaction details

KYC is a prerequisite for investing in mutual funds. AMFI describes both online and conventional routes. Follow the current instructions for your chosen route and make sure the identity, bank and contact details match your records.

  1. Complete the applicable KYC process and resolve any verification or document mismatch before placing the order.
  2. Review the fund house, scheme name, plan, option and amount on the application or online order screen.
  3. Confirm the distributor’s ARN and, where relevant, the EUIN shown on the transaction.
  4. Read the applicable loads, cut-off and transaction terms in the current documents.
  5. After submission, compare the confirmation with what you intended to buy.
  6. Check the first account statement and later CAS for the same plan, option and intermediary details.

Do not assume that every bank or investment portal offers both plan types. The confirmation and subsequent statement, not the product description you remember seeing, establish what was actually purchased.

9. Decide whether paying for distribution is worthwhile

Use a regular plan when the service is clear, useful and worth its recurring cost to you. Examples of value may include help understanding documents, completing transactions, monitoring whether the holding still matches the goal and explaining changes when your circumstances shift. Ask how often reviews occur, whether support continues after the purchase and what happens if you stop using the intermediary.

If you can research schemes, compare documents and execute transactions confidently, a direct plan may be the more economical route because it avoids distribution-related expenses. If you want professional advice but not product distribution, AMFI distinguishes a fee-based registered investment adviser as another route. Verify the adviser’s status and fees separately, and do not assume that a distributor’s registration is equivalent to independent advice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. Warning signs that should stop the application

  • The intermediary will not provide an ARN, EUIN where applicable or a written description of services.
  • The recommendation is based only on a low NAV, a recent return ranking or a promised return.
  • You are urged to invest before receiving the current SID, KIM, TER and risk information.
  • The scheme’s objective or portfolio does not match your goal, deadline or loss capacity.
  • Charges, loads or the distinction between regular and direct plans are dismissed as unimportant.
  • The plan or option on the confirmation differs from the one you selected.
  • You are encouraged by gifts or commissions rather than by a documented suitability explanation. SEBI warns investors not to be carried away by commissions or gifts from agents or distributors.

Final pre-investment checklist

  • Goal, deadline and risk capacity are written down.
  • Scheme objective, asset mix, holdings and concentration have been reviewed.
  • Current TERs for the exact regular and direct plans have been compared.
  • Loads, recurring expenses and the option selected are understood.
  • SID, KIM and current addenda have been read and saved.
  • Distributor ARN, NISM certification information and EUIN where relevant have been checked.
  • The service you receive is specific enough to justify its cost.
  • KYC is complete and the transaction confirmation matches your instructions.
  • You know how to verify future commission information in your half-yearly CAS.
