Do not invest in a new mutual fund scheme merely because it is launching at a ₹10 NFO price or carries a fashionable theme. Decide only after the scheme’s current documents show that its mandate, risks, costs, liquidity and operating rules fit your portfolio, time horizon and ability to tolerate losses.
Start with the latest Scheme Information Document (SID), Key Information Memorandum (KIM), Statement of Additional Information (SAI) and every addendum issued after those documents. Then test the scheme against the checklist below. A SID is a disclosure document, not a recommendation or a guarantee of returns.

1. Collect the complete, current document set
The document date matters. A fund house may issue an addendum changing an operational term, benchmark, load, investment limit or other condition after the original SID or KIM was published. Obtain the files from the asset-management company’s official disclosure page and check the date of each version.
| Document | What it tells you | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Scheme Information Document (SID) | The scheme’s objective, asset allocation, investment strategy, eligible instruments, concentration limits, benchmark, risk factors, fees, loads, plans and other scheme-specific terms. | Use it as the detailed reference for whether the proposed portfolio is one you actually want. SEBI’s SID format describes it as information a prospective investor ought to know before investing: SEBI SID format. |
| Key Information Memorandum (KIM) | A shorter summary of material features and the application-related information an investor needs. | Read it before applying, then verify important points against the SID. SEBI investor instructions direct applicants to read the KIM and SID carefully: SEBI investor instructions. |
| Statement of Additional Information (SAI) | Information about the mutual-fund structure, trustees, investment manager, service providers, investor rights, taxation and other common matters. | Read it together with the SID. A SEBI-hosted SID dated January 14, 2026 specifically tells investors to read the SID with the SAI and ascertain subsequent changes: January 14, 2026 SID. |
| Addenda and notices | Changes made after the document’s issue date. | Match every term you rely on to the latest addendum or notice; an old PDF can be accurate historically but wrong for a current application. |
Save the documents you used, including their dates. If a distributor’s presentation conflicts with the current SID or KIM, treat the official document as controlling and ask the fund house to explain the discrepancy before applying.

2. Translate the mandate into a portfolio role
A scheme objective is useful only when you can describe the exposure it will add to your own holdings. Write the intended role in one sentence—for example, “long-term diversified Indian equity,” “short-duration high-quality debt” or “a narrow sector allocation that I can afford to lose.” If you cannot state the role clearly, the scheme is not yet understood well enough to buy.
Check the investable universe
- Read the stated asset-allocation ranges, not just the category name. Identify the minimum and maximum permitted exposure to equity, debt, cash, derivatives, foreign securities or other instruments.
- List eligible securities and the strategy used to select them. A broad objective can still permit material concentration in a few issuers, sectors, maturities or geographies.
- Review issuer, sector, group and instrument concentration limits. Compare the permitted maximum with the diversification you expect.
- Check whether derivatives, securities lending, borrowing or other techniques are allowed and why they may be used.
Match it to time horizon and existing holdings
Equity and credit-oriented schemes can suffer large or prolonged losses; a short-term cash need is generally inconsistent with that uncertainty. A debt scheme may still face interest-rate, credit and liquidity losses. Map the new scheme against your current funds, shares, deposits and insurance investments. Two funds with different names may create the same sector, issuer or duration exposure.
Use the exact objective and allocation ranges in the current SID rather than copying figures from another fund’s document. Scheme terms are not interchangeable.

- Market risk: prices can fall as equity or bond markets move.
- Credit risk: an issuer’s downgrade, default or restructuring can reduce value or delay payment.
- Interest-rate risk: bond prices can fall when market yields rise, with sensitivity depending on maturity and duration.
- Liquidity risk: a position may be difficult to sell at a reasonable price, especially in stressed markets.
- Concentration risk: limits may allow substantial exposure to one issuer, sector, theme or country.
- Tracking risk: an index-oriented scheme may not match its benchmark because of fees, cash holdings, rebalancing and implementation differences.
Why an NFO risk label is not a forecast
At launch, a scheme may have no invested portfolio. SEBI-hosted material explains that NFO product labeling can rely on an internal assessment or a model portfolio and may change after actual investments are made: SEBI consolidated scheme disclosure. Treat the initial riskometer as a disclosure of the proposed strategy, not proof of the risk of the eventual holdings. Recheck the label and portfolio after the scheme begins investing.
4. Examine the benchmark and the evidence behind the strategy
Ask whether the benchmark represents the exposure, market segment and investment style promised by the scheme. A benchmark that omits a material part of the mandate can make relative performance look better or worse than the investor’s real experience.
Separate live results from models
A new scheme has little or no live scheme history. Distinguish clearly between:

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match- actual returns earned by the scheme after it commenced operations;
- the fund manager’s prior experience in another product; and
- model, simulated or back-tested results.
Back-tested or model performance is not a record of what this scheme delivered after fees, trading costs, cash balances and real subscriptions. Do not treat a promotional return illustration as a forecast. Once the scheme has a live history, compare it with the stated benchmark over periods suitable for the strategy and include the effect of distributions, taxes and costs where relevant.

5. Find the real costs and choose between Direct and Regular plans
Locate the current total expense ratio (TER) in the latest disclosure. TER is not a permanent property of a fund; it can change within regulatory and scheme limits. Do not substitute a category average, an old factsheet or an illustrative figure for the scheme’s current TER.
Understand plan differences
SEBI-hosted scheme disclosures state that the Direct Plan has a lower expense ratio than the Regular Plan because distribution and commission expenses are excluded from the Direct Plan: SEBI disclosure on Direct and Regular plan expenses. The choice is about how you invest, not simply a label:
- Direct Plan: generally suited to an investor who can select, purchase and monitor the scheme without an intermediary’s distribution service.
- Regular Plan: includes intermediary distribution arrangements and may be appropriate when you intentionally want that service and guidance.
Compare like with like: Direct against Direct or Regular against Regular. Record the TER, any applicable transaction charges, and whether the selected option is growth or a distribution option. A SEBI-hosted document may illustrate 2% for a Regular Plan and 1% for a Direct Plan, but that is an example rather than a universal or current fee: SEBI scheme document with illustrative expense example.

Read the exact exit-load schedule: the rate, the period during which it applies, the transaction types or exceptions, and whether the charge is calculated on the amount redeemed or another stated basis. Exit load is a charge on redemption, and the prevailing structure can change; the applicable SID or addendum is the authority: SEBI exit-load disclosure.

Also look for:
- statutory or scheme-specific lock-in periods;
- limits on frequent, large or early redemptions;
- redemption-gate, suspension or restriction provisions in exceptional market conditions;
- settlement timing and the point at which a request is valued; and
- any separate terms for systematic investment, switch, transfer or withdrawal facilities.
Do not assume that an NFO’s initial subscription period, allotment date or ₹10 unit price tells you anything about future liquidity or the cost of exiting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Verify practical operating terms before submitting an application
Use the current KIM and SID to confirm every number and selection on the application form:
- Check the minimum initial investment and additional investment amounts.
- Confirm whether lump-sum, systematic investment, switch and transfer facilities are available and from what date.
- Choose the correct plan (Direct or Regular), option and payout or reinvestment choice.
- Verify the benchmark and the scheme’s valuation, purchase and redemption cut-off rules.
- Check who may invest, including resident, non-resident, minor, trust or institutional eligibility where relevant.
- Review the bank, KYC, nomination, joint-holder and payment requirements.
- Confirm how and when account statements, confirmations and redemption proceeds are delivered.
- Check the grievance, investor-service and escalation channels stated in the documents.
These details are scheme-specific. Never copy a minimum amount, cut-off time or facility from a different fund, even if both schemes share a category label.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute8. Compare multiple schemes only when their jobs are comparable
When assessing more than one NFO or a new scheme against an existing fund, compare products seeking the same portfolio role. A thematic equity NFO is not a meaningful alternative to a diversified debt fund simply because both are accepting subscriptions.

| Comparison axis | Questions to answer from each current document |
|---|---|
| Mandate and exposure | What assets, sectors, geographies, maturities and instruments can the scheme hold, and within what ranges? |
| Risk and concentration | What are the scheme and benchmark riskometers? What issuer, sector, duration, credit and liquidity limits apply? |
| Benchmark and method | Does the benchmark reflect the promised exposure? Is the strategy active, passive, rules-based or dependent on derivatives? |
| Current costs and plan | What is the current TER for the selected Direct or Regular Plan, and what service does the chosen plan provide? |
| Liquidity and exit | What are the redemption timetable, exit-load schedule, lock-in and any redemption restrictions? |
| Operating terms | What minimums, options, eligibility rules, cut-offs and transaction facilities apply? |
Do not rank schemes by NFO unit price. A ₹10 starting unit is only a denomination; it does not make one scheme cheaper, safer or more likely to appreciate than another. Likewise, a launch-period return claim cannot replace a documented mandate and an appropriate risk assessment.
9. A decision process you can repeat
- Define the job. Write the target allocation, purpose and minimum holding period before reading marketing material.
- Download the documents. Obtain the current SID, KIM, SAI and all later addenda, noting their dates.
- Extract the terms. Record objective, asset ranges, concentration limits, benchmark, riskometers, TER, plan, minimums, exit load and redemption rules.
- Stress-test the fit. Ask what happens if the relevant market falls sharply, an issuer defaults, liquidity dries up or you need the money earlier than planned.
- Check overlap. Compare permitted exposures with your existing funds and investments.
- Compare only comparable alternatives. Use the same axes and the same plan type for each candidate.
- Recheck immediately before applying. Look for a new addendum, changed TER, riskometer, benchmark or load schedule.
- Monitor after launch. Once a live portfolio and regular disclosures exist, check whether holdings, risk and performance remain consistent with the stated role.
When to pause or seek advice
Pause if you cannot explain the scheme’s strategy, cannot identify the current cost and exit terms, or would need the money during the period in which losses are plausible. A qualified financial adviser can help when your tax position, family obligations, existing concentration or risk capacity makes the decision difficult. Advice should supplement—not replace—reading the current scheme documents.
The practical decision rule is simple: invest only when the current terms match your goal, time horizon, risk tolerance, desired portfolio allocation and liquidity needs, and when you understand what could make the investment perform differently from its stated objective.
