1. Identify what kind of loss the company is reporting
Start with several annual and quarterly periods rather than one headline number. A company can report the same net loss for very different reasons: heavy investment in a growing operation, a temporary restructuring charge, recurring operating losses, high interest costs, or non-cash accounting expenses.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSeparate operating performance from below-the-line items
Trace the income statement in order: revenue, cost of sales, gross profit or gross margin, operating expenses, operating income or loss, interest, taxes and net income or loss. This shows whether the core business is losing money before financing and tax effects, or whether a basically profitable operation was pushed into a net loss by debt costs, taxes or an unusual charge.

- Clear Print Quality: Displays high-resolution printing intended to remain legible through regular use and cleaning
- Revenue: Is it growing, flat or contracting? Check both the reported percentage change and the absolute increase.
- Gross margin: A growing company with a falling margin may be buying revenue at worsening economics. A stable or rising margin can indicate improving unit economics even while the company invests heavily.
- Operating expenses: Compare research, sales, marketing, general and administrative costs with revenue growth. Expenses that rise faster than revenue require a specific explanation and a credible path to operating leverage.
- One-time items: Restructuring, impairment, acquisition and litigation charges may not recur, but management should explain why they occurred and whether they created additional cash obligations.
- Non-cash charges: Depreciation, amortization, stock-based compensation and impairment reduce accounting profit without necessarily using cash in the current period. They still matter economically, because assets wear out, equity awards dilute owners and impairments may reveal that earlier investments failed.
Look for the trend, not a single quarter
Plot revenue, gross margin, operating loss and net loss over the same periods. Ask whether losses are narrowing because revenue and gross profit are improving, because expenses were cut, or simply because a large one-off charge ended. A shrinking loss caused by underinvestment can hurt future growth; a widening loss caused by a deliberate, time-limited expansion may be acceptable only if the company has enough liquidity to complete it.
2. Follow cash rather than relying on earnings
The income statement uses accrual accounting. The cash-flow statement shows whether cash actually entered or left the business. Reconcile net income to operating cash flow and read every major adjustment.
Understand operating cash flow
Operating cash flow begins with net income and adjusts for non-cash items and changes in operating assets and liabilities. A company can report a modest accounting loss while using substantial cash if receivables, inventory or contract assets rise. Conversely, payables or customer deposits can temporarily make operating cash flow look better than the underlying economics.

Compare operating cash use with revenue and gross profit over multiple periods. Improvement means more than a smaller loss: it should appear as a sustained reduction in cash consumed from normal operations, without simply delaying supplier payments or collecting unusually large customer prepayments.
Separate operating, investing and financing cash flows
- Operating cash flow reflects the cash cost of running the business.
- Investing cash flow includes purchases of equipment, software, facilities and acquisitions. A company may have low operating burn but large capital expenditures that still require funding.
- Financing cash flow shows money raised through share issuance or borrowing, as well as repayments, dividends and debt issuance costs. Financing inflows can mask the fact that operations are consuming cash.
Build a bridge from beginning cash to ending cash. If the balance rose, identify exactly how much came from operations, asset sales, new equity or new debt. Cash generated by a financing transaction is not evidence that the business has become self-funding.
3. Calculate cash runway with explicit assumptions
Cash on hand has meaning only in relation to the rate of cash use and the obligations that must be paid. Examine cash and cash equivalents, restricted cash, working capital and unused borrowing capacity in the latest balance sheet and footnotes.

Use the company’s definition of burn, then test it
Determine whether management’s “cash burn” means operating cash flow, operating cash flow plus capital expenditure, or a different adjusted measure. Record the period used—monthly, quarterly or annual—and whether the figure excludes unusual receipts or payments. A simple runway estimate divides available unrestricted liquidity by average cash use for a clearly defined period, but the result is only as reliable as those definitions.
Recommended Free Tools
Calculate at least two cases:
- Base case: management’s stated revenue, margin, expense and investment assumptions.
- Downside case: slower revenue growth, lower margin, delayed milestones, higher working-capital needs or reduced access to financing.
Runway should be measured to the date when cash would become insufficient, not merely to the next reporting date. Include seasonal working-capital swings, debt repayments, lease payments, capital expenditures, severance, restructuring costs and minimum cash requirements. If the company discloses a minimum cash covenant or restricted balances, do not count that money as freely available.
Ask whether runway reaches a self-funding milestone
A runway estimate is useful only when it reaches a concrete event: positive operating cash flow, a contracted product launch, regulatory approval, a refinancing date or another milestone that changes funding needs. If the company needs to raise capital before that event, the relevant question is whether financing is realistically available on acceptable terms—not whether the current cash balance looks large.
4. Match liquidity with obligations and restrictions
Read the current-liabilities section, debt footnotes and commitments disclosures. List obligations by due date and distinguish unavoidable payments from discretionary spending.
- Debt principal maturities and scheduled amortization
- Interest payments and variable-rate exposure
- Operating and finance lease commitments
- Purchase commitments, take-or-pay contracts and supplier obligations
- Convertible notes, preferred dividends and redemption rights
- Restructuring, litigation or settlement payments
- Collateral requirements and minimum-cash provisions
Check the amount and availability of revolving credit, then read its covenants. A facility can be technically undrawn but unavailable if a borrowing-base test, leverage ratio or other condition is breached. Note whether assets are pledged and whether lenders can demand repayment after a default. Compare obligations with unrestricted cash and expected operating cash generation under both the base and downside cases.

Turn the plan into measurable milestones
Write down each step management says will reduce losses: a product launch, price increase, plant opening, head-count reduction, customer contract, regulatory decision or refinancing. For every milestone, record the expected date, cash cost, required revenue or margin, and evidence that the work has started.
Then compare the current report with prior reports. Did the date move? Did the expected cost increase? Was a promised customer, approval or financing actually obtained? A plan that repeatedly slips, changes its metric or depends on an unnamed future investor deserves a larger risk discount than a plan with signed contracts and funded implementation.
Check the assumptions behind improvement
Management may forecast operating leverage from revenue growth, but that requires enough gross profit per additional dollar of sales to cover incremental expenses. Examine customer concentration, renewal rates, pricing, backlog and capacity disclosures where provided. Do not treat a non-binding pipeline or an internal target as revenue already secured.

Search the auditor’s report and notes for language about substantial doubt about the company’s ability to continue as a going concern. Identify the conditions causing doubt—recurring losses, negative operating cash flow, debt maturities, covenant breaches or dependence on a capital raise—and read the stated plans to address them.
Distinguish actions that are completed from actions that are merely intended. Cash already raised, a signed credit agreement or a completed restructuring is different from a proposed offering, an expected waiver or management’s hope of selling an asset.
For U.S. GAAP reporting, a historical SEC staff page dated June 23, 2020 described evaluating obligations due within one year after the financial statements are issued and disclosing conditions and management’s plans. That page was marked withdrawn on May 6, 2025. It is useful as a checklist of questions, not as a current rule or legal advice. Confirm the requirements that apply to the issuer’s reporting jurisdiction and the latest filing.

7. Examine how the company would finance the plan
If the business cannot reach sustainable cash generation before its runway ends, financing is part of the investment case. Analyze the terms, not just the amount management hopes to raise.
Equity financing and dilution
Start with basic shares outstanding, then add options, warrants, restricted awards and convertible securities that could become shares. Read the filing for authorized but unissued shares, at-the-market programs and prior issuance discounts. Model ownership after a plausible raise at several prices. A successful capital raise can keep a company alive while reducing each existing shareholder’s percentage ownership and earnings claim.
Debt financing and refinancing risk
For each loan or note, record principal, interest rate, maturity, security, covenants, conversion terms and mandatory amortization. Debt may delay dilution but increase fixed cash obligations and can transfer control to lenders after a default. A maturity that falls before projected positive cash flow creates refinancing risk even when the balance sheet currently shows adequate cash.
Access is not the same as availability
Management may state that additional capital is available, but verify whether a facility is committed, conditional or merely under discussion. Review prior offerings, lender waivers and covenant compliance. Funding uncertainty can impair operations if suppliers, employees or customers doubt the company’s ability to perform.

Use businesses in the same sector and at a similar stage. Compare consistent periods and definitions rather than selecting whichever metric makes the company look best.

9. Use valuation methods that work when earnings are negative
A conventional price-to-earnings ratio uses price per share divided by earnings per share. When earnings per share are negative, the usual positive-earnings comparison is not meaningful. Do not force a negative P/E into a ranking that assumes profitable companies.
Instead, choose a sector-appropriate approach and state its assumptions. Depending on the business, investors may examine enterprise value relative to revenue, gross profit or a realistic future cash-flow scenario. These measures are not automatically safer: a revenue multiple can look cheap while margins deteriorate, and a discounted cash-flow model can produce any value if growth, margins, terminal value and discount rate are overly optimistic.
Use valuation only after establishing liquidity and financing needs. A stock that appears inexpensive on a sales multiple may still require repeated dilutive raises; a higher multiple may be justified only if the company has a funded path to durable cash generation.
10. A practical filing-review workflow
- Collect the latest annual and quarterly reports. Note the reporting date, accounting basis, auditor’s opinion and any subsequent-events note.
- Build a multi-period income statement. Enter revenue, gross profit, operating expenses, operating loss and net loss for each annual and quarterly period.
- Reconcile cash. Record beginning cash, operating cash flow, investing cash flow, financing cash flow and ending unrestricted cash.
- Create an obligation calendar. List debt, leases, purchase commitments, preferred payments and other material amounts by due date.
- Calculate base and downside runway. Use a clearly defined burn measure and include mandatory payments and capital spending.
- Audit management’s milestones. Compare current statements with prior promises, dates, costs and results.
- Model financing outcomes. Estimate dilution from equity and fixed obligations from debt under realistic terms.
- Benchmark peers. Use comparable periods, definitions and stages of development.
- Write an explicit decision rule. State what must be true for the investment to work, what evidence would disprove it and how much loss you can afford.
11. Red flags that require a higher margin of safety
- Revenue growth is slowing while operating expenses continue to accelerate.
- Gross margin falls without a credible explanation or recovery plan.
- Operating cash use remains high even after management excludes repeated “one-time” charges.
- Cash improves mainly because of new borrowing, share issuance, asset sales or delayed payments.
- Restricted cash, covenant limits or collateral rules make the headline cash balance unavailable.
- Debt maturities arrive before the stated path to positive cash flow.
- Going-concern uncertainty depends on an uncommitted financing or asset sale.
- Milestones are repeatedly postponed, redefined or replaced with non-binding targets.
- Share count, options, warrants or convertibles create substantial potential dilution.
- Peer comparisons rely on inconsistent adjusted metrics or ignore sector economics.
12. Decide what evidence would change your mind
A disciplined review ends with conditions, not a prediction. Write down the evidence that would support the investment—such as sustained improvement in operating cash flow, a funded milestone, secured financing or declining leverage—and the evidence that would invalidate it. Recheck those conditions after each filing.
This process cannot eliminate business or market risk. It can prevent a common error: treating a low share price or a narrowing accounting loss as proof that the company has enough cash, adequate financing and a viable route to self-funding.
The SEC’s educational material is general information, not a buy or sell recommendation.
