Before buying an ASX-listed lithium miner, establish what the company has actually proved, what still depends on assumptions, and how much cash is required to reach production. Check the issuer’s project stage, current mineral resource and any ore reserve, the technical basis for production or financial forecasts, funding and dilution risk, operating constraints, product-price exposure and disclosure quality. Then compare companies using the same evidence standard rather than comparing promotional targets or headline resource tonnes.
This is a company-checking framework, not a share tip. Lithium demand can grow while an individual project fails to obtain permits, finance, recover saleable product or deliver an economic return.

1. Identify what the issuer is today
An explorer, a developer, an operating mine and a processor expose shareholders to different risks. The first question is not “How big is the lithium resource?” but “What has been built, funded or demonstrated?” Match the evidence you demand to the company’s stage.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Stage | Evidence that matters most | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Explorer | Drilling results, geological interpretation and a clearly explained exploration program | Are results repeatable? Is there a current mineral resource, or only targets and early intersections? How much drilling and cash are needed before the next decision? |
| Developer | Resource and reserve work, engineering studies, approvals, infrastructure plan and funding strategy | Has the project reached a study level that supports its production claims? Which permits, contracts and finance remain outstanding? |
| Operating miner | Actual production, recoveries, costs, sales and cash flow | Is output meeting guidance? Are grades, recoveries, unit costs and realised prices consistent with the plan? |
| Processor or integrated business | Demonstrated processing performance, product quality, commissioning and customer sales | Can the plant reliably make the specified product at commercial scale? Are feedstock, energy, reagents and customers secured? |
A large exploration target may be relevant to an explorer’s upside, but it is not equivalent to a financed mine. Conversely, an operating producer may have a smaller resource yet offer evidence that the mine, plant and sales chain work in practice.

2. Separate a mineral resource from an ore reserve
Read the latest resource statement before relying on any tonnes or grade. Record the estimate date, confidence category, competent person, cut-off assumptions, recovery assumptions and the modifying factors described in the report. An old estimate may no longer reflect drilling, prices, metallurgy, permits or mine design.
ASIC describes an ore reserve as the economically mineable part of a measured and/or indicated mineral resource at the time it is reported. That means a mineral resource is not automatically a mineable inventory: economic, mining, processing, legal, environmental, social and infrastructure factors must be considered. The definition and the date belong together; an estimate can change materially when assumptions change.
| Disclosure | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Exploration result | What was intersected or sampled at particular locations | A continuous deposit, a mine plan or commercial economics |
| Mineral resource | A classified estimate of material with geological confidence under stated assumptions | That all tonnes are recoverable, permitted or profitable |
| Ore reserve | The portion assessed as economically mineable when reported, after applying modifying factors | Guaranteed production, price or project funding |
| Actual production | Material the operation has mined and processed, with reported operating results | That future output will remain at the same level |
Read the competent-person and assumptions sections
Find the named competent person, their professional relationship with the issuer and the technical report supporting the estimate. Check the effective date, drilling database, density and metallurgical test work, recovery assumptions, cut-off grade and any exclusions. Look for statements about geotechnical conditions, water, waste, infrastructure, royalties, permitting and environmental constraints. Missing information is itself a comparison point.

ASX Listing Rule 5.6 requires public reports by listed mining companies to be prepared in accordance with the JORC Code, according to ASIC Information Sheet 214. ASIC also warns that the JORC Code is a public-reporting code, not a code that regulates how a competent person estimates mineral resources or ore reserves. In Corporate Finance Update, Issue 27, ASIC says describing the estimates themselves as “JORC compliant” may mislead. Examine the underlying estimate, methods and assumptions instead of treating that phrase as an assurance of value.

3. Read the issuer’s disclosure pack in a fixed order
Use the same sequence for every company so a persuasive presentation does not replace primary evidence.
- Confirm the ticker and stage. Note the principal project, jurisdiction, ownership percentage, listed securities and whether the issuer is an explorer, developer, producer or processor.
- Read the latest annual report. Check the accounting treatment of exploration and evaluation expenditure, project ownership, commitments, related-party transactions, contingencies and going-concern language.
- Read the latest quarterly activities and cash-flow report. Record cash on hand, quarterly expenditure, exploration spend, administration costs, financing receipts and the stated funding horizon. Compare actual spending with the development timetable.
- Read the investor presentation as a map, not proof. Use it to locate projects, milestones and claims, then trace each material number to a technical report or ASX announcement.
- Search price-sensitive ASX announcements. Look for resource updates, study results, drilling changes, permitting decisions, offtake or processing agreements, capital raisings, director transactions and revisions to guidance.
- Locate the current resource and reserve statements. Write down their dates, categories, competent persons and key assumptions. Check whether a newer announcement supersedes an older table.
- Reconcile documents. Investigate different project names, ownership percentages, production dates, capex figures or resource totals rather than selecting the most favourable version.
Give greater weight to dated technical disclosures and audited financial statements than to undated presentation graphics. A claim that cannot be traced to a source document should be marked as unverified in your notes.
4. Test every production target and financial forecast
Production targets, revenue estimates and project returns are forward-looking statements. Ask what technical work supports them, which assumptions are material and whether the issuer can fund the work needed to test those assumptions.
Check the technical basis
- Identify the study type and date, such as a scoping-level assessment, prefeasibility study or feasibility study, and read its limitations.
- Separate material based on measured or indicated resources from material that depends on exploration targets or lower-confidence estimates.
- Check mining rate, strip ratio, dilution, recovery, concentrate or hydroxide specifications, ramp-up period, downtime and sustaining capital assumptions.
- Test whether infrastructure, power, water, transport and processing capacity are available at the stated cost and schedule.
- Look for sensitivity analysis covering lithium prices, exchange rates, recovery, capex, operating costs, schedule delays and grade.
ASIC guidance says a production target or forecast financial information must have reasonable grounds and disclose material assumptions. Forecasts based solely on exploration targets or historical or foreign estimates are too conceptual, speculative and unreliable to establish reasonable grounds. A table showing annual tonnes is therefore not evidence of future cash flow unless the supporting work and assumptions are adequate.

Follow the money to first production
Compare the cash balance and expected expenditure with the capital required for the next milestone. Identify whether the plan assumes a project loan, strategic investment, prepayment, joint venture contribution or another equity issue. Record the amount, timing, conditions and security of proposed finance where disclosed.
If new shares are needed, estimate how the issue could dilute existing holders under plausible financing sizes. Also check options, performance rights, convertible notes and any placement capacity. A technically attractive project can still produce a poor result for current shareholders if repeated raisings fund a long, expensive development.
5. Examine practical execution risks
Commercial success requires more than ore in the ground. Build a constraint list from company disclosures and mark each item as demonstrated, contracted, permitted, under study or unresolved.

Processing and product quality
Lithium projects may sell spodumene concentrate, lithium carbonate, lithium hydroxide or an intermediate product. Each has different plant, quality, reagent, energy and customer requirements. Look for pilot or demonstration results, impurity limits, recovery variability, commissioning performance and evidence that the intended product meets customer specifications.
Infrastructure, approvals and community factors
Verify access roads, rail or port capacity, power, water, tailings storage and site services. Identify environmental approvals, land access, rehabilitation obligations, native-title or community agreements and conditions that could change the schedule or cost. Do not fill a disclosure gap with an assumption that infrastructure or permits will arrive on time.
Sales and operating evidence
Read offtake terms carefully: product, volume, pricing formula, quality adjustments, duration, take-or-pay commitments, termination rights and counterparty obligations. For an operating asset, compare reported tonnes mined, processed and sold with guidance, and examine recovery, realised price, cash cost and downtime. For a developer, treat an offtake memorandum or non-binding agreement differently from binding sales.

| Indicator | September 2026 government forecast | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Spodumene | Average price around US$2,410 a tonne in 2026, easing to around US$1,500 a tonne by 2031 | Stress-test a project whose economics depend on a high concentrate price. |
| Lithium hydroxide | Declining from US$21,100 a tonne to US$16,200 a tonne by 2031 in real terms, with 2026 as the base year | Check whether conversion costs, product premiums and financing remain viable at the later price. |
| Global demand | Growth above 11% a year through 2031 | Demand growth supports a market thesis but does not guarantee a particular mine’s sales. |
| Global supply | Growth around 7.3% a year through 2031, with near-term oversupply before gradual movement toward balance | Expect price and margin pressure before any tighter market; test the project’s cash runway. |
| Australian mine output | Growth around 8.8% a year to 2031 | More domestic supply can increase competition for processing, logistics and capital. |
| Australian export earnings | Nearly A$10.2 billion in 2025–26, over A$16.6 billion in 2026–27, then around A$13.6 billion in real terms by 2030–31 | These are national export forecasts, not a prediction of any company’s revenue or return. |
Use the outlook to choose price and timing scenarios for your own review, then apply them to the issuer’s product, payability, costs, hedging and ownership share. Do not convert national demand, supply or export figures into a target price for one security. Forecasts can change as new mines, plant performance, inventories, technology, policy and economic conditions change.
7. Compare ASX lithium companies on identical axes
Build a side-by-side sheet and leave “not stated” where an issuer has not disclosed a comparable figure. Do not reward a company merely because it provides a larger number in a less mature category.
| Axis | What to record for every issuer |
|---|---|
| Project and business stage | Explorer, developer, operating mine or processor; ownership percentage; what has actually been built or produced. |
| Resource and reserve quality | JORC category, estimate date, competent-person disclosure, assumptions and whether an ore reserve has been stated. |
| Study and forecast maturity | Study level, production target, financial forecast, reasonable grounds, material assumptions and technical gaps. |
| Funding and dilution | Cash, spending rate, capital required for the next milestone, debt or partner funding and likelihood of further equity. |
| Execution and operating evidence | Drilling, development, commissioning, production, recoveries, costs, processing and sales evidence appropriate to stage. |
| Market exposure | Product form, pricing mechanism, customer terms, sensitivity to the dated outlook and exposure to oversupply. |
| Disclosure quality | Recency, completeness, consistency, clear assumptions and prompt reporting of setbacks as well as successes. |
Comparison is fair only when the denominator is similar. A developer’s forecast tonnes should not be ranked against a producer’s actual tonnes without labelling the difference. Likewise, a resource total should not be treated as equivalent to reserve tonnes or annual saleable output.
8. Red flags that deserve a pause
- Resource figures are repeatedly promoted without a current estimate date, category or competent-person report.
- The company uses “JORC compliant” as a substitute for explaining estimation methods and modifying factors.
- Production or revenue targets depend mainly on exploration targets, historical estimates or foreign estimates.
- A major capital requirement is mentioned without a credible financing path or dilution discussion.
- Project dates, capex, ownership or output change between announcements without a clear explanation.
- Metallurgical results are from small samples, while commercial-scale recovery and product quality remain untested.
- Permits, water, power, transport, tailings or community agreements are described as future tasks but are absent from the schedule and budget.
- Non-binding memoranda are presented alongside contracted sales without distinguishing their legal status.
- Cash runway ends before the next technical or permitting milestone.
- Management highlights market growth but does not show the project’s price sensitivity, costs or customer terms.
9. A practical worksheet before placing an order
| Question | Evidence to write down | Decision implication |
|---|---|---|
| What does the issuer own and operate? | Project, jurisdiction, ownership, stage and latest activity | Sets the evidence standard and main risk type. |
| What is the current resource and reserve? | Date, category, tonnes, grade, competent person and assumptions | Shows geological confidence and whether economic mineability has been assessed. |
| What must happen next? | Drilling, study, permit, financing, construction, commissioning or ramp-up milestone | Defines the next source of value and failure point. |
| How is it funded? | Cash, spending rate, capex, debt, partners, equity and securities on issue | Highlights liquidity and dilution risk. |
| What product will be sold? | Concentrate or chemical, specification, recovery, customer and price formula | Determines exposure to processing, quality and market pricing. |
| Which assumptions drive the forecast? | Price, exchange rate, grade, recovery, capex, costs, schedule and ownership | Identifies what to stress-test and what is not yet demonstrated. |
| What is missing? | Unstated permits, infrastructure, contracts, test work or updated studies | Prevents an absence of disclosure being mistaken for a positive. |
10. Make the decision repeatable
- Set a minimum evidence rule. Decide in advance whether you will buy only after a current resource, a defined next milestone and enough cash to reach it, or whether you accept earlier-stage exploration risk.
- Write a base case and a stress case. Use the company’s disclosed assumptions for the base case. For the stress case, apply a lower lithium price, delayed schedule, higher capex or lower recovery, and note which assumption is unsupported.
- Check dilution before upside. Calculate how much capital is needed and what securities could be issued. Treat a project that cannot reach its next milestone without new money as a financing decision, not just a geology decision.
- Verify the newest announcement. Confirm that no later drilling, study, capital raising, permit decision or guidance change has superseded your notes.
- Compare at least two alternatives. Use the same axes and mark missing information explicitly. A smaller but better-documented project may be easier to assess than a larger promotional story.
- Define what would invalidate the thesis. Examples include a failed pilot, delayed permit, financing on highly dilutive terms, sustained production below guidance or a material resource downgrade.
- Size the position for uncertainty. Keep the position consistent with the possibility that forecasts, prices and project timelines will not occur as planned; this is risk control, not a prediction of outcome.
Bottom line
The essential pre-purchase check is whether the issuer’s evidence matches its stage. Verify the resource and reserve separately, read the assumptions behind every forecast, fund the path to the next milestone, test operational constraints and compare product exposure with a dated lithium outlook. Treat the September 2026 market numbers as scenarios, not promises, and never turn a national growth forecast into an individual share-price claim.
