What to check before buying an investment trust through an ISA

Before buying an investment trust in a UK stocks and shares ISA, verify four things in this order: the trust is ISA-eligible and available on your platform, its portfolio and risks fit your plan, its share price relative to net asset value (NAV) is understandable, and the combined trust and platform costs are acceptable. An ISA shelters qualifying investment income and gains from personal tax, but it does not remove investment risk, trading costs or the need to research the company.

Can I hold this investment trust in my stocks and shares ISA?

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) says shares in an investment trust can qualify as stocks and shares ISA investments when the trust meets the applicable investment requirement. Eligibility is a legal test applied to the investment, not a guarantee that every ISA provider will list it. Check both the trust’s status and your ISA manager’s dealing universe before placing an order.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Use HMRC’s guidance for ISA managers to understand the qualifying-investment rules: HMRC stocks and shares investments for ISA managers.
  • Search your provider’s dealing service for the exact company name, ticker and exchange listing. A trust may be eligible in principle but unavailable through a particular platform.
  • Confirm that the order is being placed inside the stocks and shares ISA, rather than in a separate taxable account.
  • Check whether the platform supports the relevant market, dealing frequency and order type. Availability, commission and settlement arrangements vary by provider.

For the 2026–27 tax year, GOV.UK lists an overall ISA subscription limit of £20,000. The allowance is time-sensitive, so verify the current figure and rules before publication and before subscribing: GOV.UK ISA overview. GOV.UK explains that investment income and capital gains within an ISA receive the ISA’s tax treatment: How ISAs work.

What are you actually buying?

An investment trust is a limited company with fixed capital and a closed-ended structure; despite its name, it is not a trust in the legal sense. You buy shares in the company on a market. The company invests the pooled money and is managed professionally, with an objective that may be income, capital growth or both. HMRC describes the structure and objectives in its investment-funds manual: What investment trusts are.

Because the number of shares is not continuously created or cancelled to match investor demand, the market price can differ from the value of the portfolio held by the company. That difference is central to the decision: your return depends on the share price you pay and later receive, not only on how the underlying assets perform.

Does the trust’s objective and portfolio fit your plan?

Read the latest factsheet, annual report and interim report before relying on a platform summary. Establish what the trust is trying to achieve and whether its assets are appropriate for your time horizon and tolerance for losses.

Identify the objective

  • Is the stated aim income, capital growth, or a combination?
  • Does the trust target a particular return, dividend policy or benchmark?
  • Is the strategy intended for a long holding period rather than money you may need soon?

The Association of Investment Companies (AIC) says structure and goals matter more than past performance and warns against choosing solely on previous returns. Its 2024 ISA guide advises investors to be prepared to hold investment trusts for “at least five years, and preferably ten or more”; that is general educational guidance, not a universal rule or personal recommendation. Read the guide at AIC Getting more from your savings (2024).

Map the holdings

  • Record the main regions and countries, sectors and asset classes.
  • Check the largest holdings and how much of the portfolio they represent.
  • Look for exposure that overlaps with investments you already own.
  • Assess whether the underlying assets are readily tradable or could be difficult to sell in stressed markets.

A concentrated specialist trust can behave very differently from a diversified portfolio. The right question is not whether a strategy has recently performed well, but whether you understand the sources of return and can tolerate a prolonged period in which they work against you.

How much gearing does it use?

Gearing means borrowing or using other financing so the trust can invest more than its unborrowed assets alone would allow. It can increase gains when investments rise, but it magnifies losses when they fall and creates interest or other financing costs. The AIC summarises the trade-off as: “Gearing increases the risks, but can boost income and capital profits over the long term.”

Check the current gearing figure, the board’s policy or permitted range, the type and maturity of borrowing, interest-rate terms and any headroom under lending agreements. A trust that does not gear today may still have authority to borrow, while a trust with borrowing may reduce or increase it as markets move. Compare the figure in the latest report with the stated policy rather than treating one date’s number as permanent.

Gearing is only one part of risk. Combine it with portfolio concentration, asset liquidity, currency exposure and the possibility that financing costs reduce distributions or returns. The AIC’s explanations of structure, gearing and risk are at What are investment companies? and Choosing an investment company.

Is the share price at a discount or premium to NAV?

NAV is the value of the trust’s assets minus its liabilities. A discount occurs when the market share price is below NAV; a premium occurs when it is above NAV. Demand, confidence in the manager, the liquidity or valuation of the assets, dividend expectations and wider market conditions can all influence the gap.

Measure What it tells you What it does not tell you
Share price The price at which investors are currently trading the listed shares. The exact value of the underlying portfolio.
NAV An estimate of underlying assets less liabilities, calculated under the trust’s reporting policy. The price you will necessarily receive when you sell.
Discount The share price is below NAV. That the shares are automatically cheap or likely to outperform.
Premium The share price is above NAV. That the trust is overpriced; a premium can persist or disappear.

Inspect the current percentage and its history. Ask why the gap is at that level: a discount may reflect concerns about strategy, governance, gearing or hard-to-value assets. If the discount widens after you buy, your shares can underperform the portfolio even when NAV rises. If it narrows, share-price returns can exceed NAV returns. Treat the discount or premium as a source of possible volatility, not as a standalone recommendation. The AIC explains these effects and return measures at its structure and discounts guide and its choosing guide.

Are you reading performance figures on the right basis?

Separate the return earned by the underlying portfolio from the return experienced by a shareholder.

Figure Use it for Important qualification
Share-price total return Assessing what an investor in the listed shares experienced, including distributions and price movement where the calculation allows. It includes changes in the discount or premium.
NAV total return Assessing the portfolio and manager’s investment result. It excludes the shareholder’s discount or premium effect.
Benchmark return Testing whether the trust met an appropriate comparator over the same period. The benchmark must match the strategy and asset mix.

Compare like-for-like periods, include dividends where the published measure does so, and check whether figures are annualised or cumulative. A strong NAV result is not the same as the exact return received by a shareholder. The AIC’s choosing guide states: “If you know your goals and have decided you’d like to invest in an investment trust, it’s important that you don’t choose one based on its past performance.” Past performance is not a guarantee of future results.

What will the trust and platform charge me?

Calculate the cost of owning and trading the shares using measures with the same scope. No single headline percentage captures every expense.

Internal trust costs

  • Management and administration expenses.
  • Portfolio transaction costs when investments are bought or sold.
  • Interest and other gearing costs.
  • Performance fees, if the trust’s terms allow them.

The AIC’s ongoing charge is backward-looking. It excludes transaction costs, gearing costs and performance fees. “Ongoing charge plus performance fee” is a separate measure. A Key Information Document (KID) is intended to be forward-looking and can include transaction and gearing costs and performance fees where paid. These disclosures have different scopes, so do not compare them as if they were identical. Read the latest accounts, KID and fee notes together. Definitions are set out in the AIC guide at AIC costs and disclosure guidance.

External investor costs

  • The ISA platform or account fee, which may be a percentage, a flat amount or tiered.
  • Dealing commission for each purchase or sale.
  • The bid–offer spread between buying and selling prices.
  • Applicable transaction taxes and market charges.

Obtain the platform’s current tariff rather than relying on an old comparison or a promotional rate. HMRC’s guidance for ISA managers discusses fees and charges at How to manage an ISA investment fund. Ask the provider how its fee is calculated for a trust share, whether regular dealing costs differ from one-off orders, and whether transferring or closing the account carries a charge.

How does tax work inside and outside the ISA?

The ISA wrapper and the trust company’s own tax position are separate. HMRC says an approved investment trust is generally subject to corporation tax on income in the normal way but exempt from corporation tax on chargeable gains. Holding qualifying shares in an ISA gives the investor the ISA’s tax treatment; it does not change the company’s tax status. See HMRC’s investment trust tax manual and GOV.UK’s ISA explanation.

What documents and data should you inspect?

Use primary documents for trust-specific facts because share price, NAV, discount, gearing, holdings, charges and dividend policy change.

  1. Download the latest annual report and interim report from the trust or exchange issuer.
  2. Read the investment objective, policy, principal risks, borrowing arrangements and dividend policy.
  3. Check the latest factsheet for holdings, sector and geographic exposure, NAV, share price, discount or premium and gearing date.
  4. Read the KID for its forward-looking cost presentation and risk indicator, noting what is and is not included.
  5. Compare share-price total return, NAV total return and a relevant benchmark over matching periods.
  6. Check the platform’s live dealing screen, spread, commission, account fee and any market-specific charges.

The AIC’s research tools bring together company profiles, performance, dividends, discounts, charges, portfolio information and gearing data: AIC research tools. Use them as a starting point, then confirm material figures in the trust’s current reports and your provider’s tariff.

  • Eligibility: Does the exact share meet ISA rules, and does my ISA manager offer it?
  • Purpose: Is the objective income, growth or both, and does it match my time horizon?
  • Portfolio: What regions, sectors, asset classes and top holdings drive the result?
  • Liquidity: Could the underlying assets be difficult to value or sell when markets are stressed?
  • Gearing: What is the current level, policy range, borrowing cost and refinancing risk?
  • Valuation: What are today’s NAV, share price and discount or premium, and how have they behaved historically?
  • Returns: Have I compared share-price total return with NAV total return and an appropriate benchmark?
  • Income: What is the dividend objective, and what do the accounts say about coverage and reserves where relevant?
  • Costs: What are the ongoing charge, performance fee terms, transaction and gearing costs, spread, dealing commission and platform fee?
  • Tax and allowance: Is there enough unused ISA subscription allowance, and have I checked the current year’s rules?
  • Exit plan: Under what conditions would I sell, and could a wider discount or thin market make the exit price materially worse than NAV?

Common mistakes to avoid

Assuming ISA eligibility means platform availability

Legal eligibility and a provider’s supported dealing list are different checks. Confirm both before transferring money or planning a purchase.

Treating a discount as a bargain signal

A discount can be compensation for concerns about the manager, assets, gearing or governance. Investigate the cause and history instead of buying solely because the percentage looks large.

Using NAV performance as your personal return

The discount or premium can add to or subtract from the return you receive. Always include the share-price series when assessing the shareholder experience.

Comparing unlike cost numbers

An AIC ongoing charge, a KID cost presentation and a platform tariff answer different questions. Identify each measure’s time period and inclusions before deciding that one trust is cheaper.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buying for a short-term cash need

Listed shares can fall, discounts can widen and dealing costs apply. The AIC’s five-year, preferably ten-year, holding guidance is educational context, not a promise that losses cannot occur. Do not commit money that may be needed at short notice.

Ignoring concentration and borrowing because the recent return was strong

Past returns can hide dependence on a small number of holdings, a favourable market regime or leverage. Read the policy and risk disclosures before relying on the historical chart.

When is the decision ready?

You have a defensible basis for a purchase when the trust is eligible and available, its objective and holdings fit your plan, you understand gearing and liquidity, you have examined the discount or premium and both return measures, and you can state the full cost of buying, holding and selling. If any of those answers is missing or based on stale data, pause and obtain the latest document or tariff. This is general information, not personal investment advice; consider regulated advice if you need a recommendation tailored to your circumstances.
