Before you buy an individual U.S. bond, confirm exactly who owes you money, what payments are promised, what you will pay, what yield that price produces, when the debt can end, how you would sell it, and how taxes affect the result. Check the current offering documents and transaction quote rather than relying on a bond screen, coupon, or rating alone. The checklist below is designed for evaluating a specific issue; it does not determine whether any bond is suitable for you.
1. Identify the issuer and the legal promise
A bond is a debt security: you lend money to an issuer, and the issuer promises interest and repayment under stated terms. The promise is subject to credit risk. If the issuer defaults, an interest payment can be delayed or missed, and principal may not be returned in full. The SEC explains the basic structure and risks in its Bonds FAQs.

Verify who is legally responsible
Record the issuer’s full legal name, not merely a brand, project name, or trading symbol. Determine whether the obligation is a senior corporate bond, a subordinated obligation, a municipal issue, an agency security, or another structure. Then identify what supports repayment: the issuer’s general credit, specific revenues, pledged collateral, or a guarantee. Security and seniority affect where your claim stands if the issuer encounters financial trouble.

Map every promised cash flow
- Face (par) value to be repaid at maturity, subject to the issuer’s ability to pay.
- Coupon rate, payment frequency, and the dates on which interest is due.
- Stated maturity date and any conditions that can change the payment schedule.
- Whether interest can be paid in cash, deferred, or added to principal under the offering documents.
Read the prospectus, offering memorandum, and indenture when available. These documents define payment priority, events of default, remedies, and any restrictions on the issuer. A familiar issuer name does not substitute for understanding the particular obligation.

2. Compare price and yield—not coupon alone
The coupon is the rate applied to the bond’s face value. Your return depends on the price you pay, the timing of all cash flows, and what happens before maturity. A bond can trade above face value (a premium) or below face value (a discount). The SEC’s explanation of corporate bonds covers the relationship among price, coupon, and yield in What Are Corporate Bonds?.
| Term to record | What it tells you | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase price | The amount you pay in the quoted transaction, including any accrued interest or stated charges that apply. | That you can later sell for the same amount. |
| Face value | The principal amount scheduled for repayment at maturity if the issuer performs. | That market value will stay at face value before maturity. |
| Coupon | The stated interest rate used to calculate scheduled payments on face value. | Your annualized return when you buy at a premium or discount. |
| Yield to maturity | A comparison measure incorporating purchase price, coupon payments, time, and scheduled repayment if held to maturity. | A guaranteed realized return if you sell early, the bond is called, or the issuer defaults. |
Ask the broker for the current bid and offer, the quoted yield, accrued interest, and every transaction charge. Compare bonds using the same yield convention and assumptions. Yield to maturity is useful for comparing expected cash flows, but it assumes the scheduled payments occur and that you hold until maturity. It does not remove market, reinvestment, liquidity, or default risk.
3. Assess credit quality, security, and payment priority
Use ratings as a starting point
Credit ratings are opinions or estimates of relative credit risk, and agencies can change them. A high rating is not a promise that the issuer will never default. Conversely, a lower rating does not make default certain, but the higher yield commonly offered by lower-rated debt generally compensates investors for taking more credit risk. The SEC discusses high-yield corporate bonds and their risks in What Are High-Yield Corporate Bonds?.

Check the rating, the agency that assigned it, its date, and whether the rating is for the exact issue. Look for recent rating actions and the reasons given. Do not treat a rating as a substitute for reading the issuer’s financial disclosures and the bond documents.
Read the protections and weaknesses in the documents
For lower-rated or complex debt, inspect:
- Covenants: limits on additional borrowing, asset sales, dividends, or other actions that could weaken repayment capacity.
- Collateral and security: which assets, if any, are pledged and how they are valued.
- Seniority and payment priority: whether other creditors are paid before you in a restructuring.
- Payment-in-kind or deferral provisions: whether the issuer can postpone cash interest or add it to the balance.
- Events of default and remedies: what constitutes a breach and what rights bondholders have.
These terms can matter as much as the headline rating. Compare the exact obligation, not just the issuer’s name.

4. Match maturity to your time horizon and rate risk
Choose a maturity that fits when you may need the money. Longer-maturity fixed-rate bonds generally move more in response to interest-rate changes than otherwise similar shorter-maturity bonds. When market rates rise, existing fixed-rate bonds generally lose market value; when rates fall, their market value generally rises. The SEC describes this relationship in Fixed Income Investments — When Interest Rates Go Up, Prices of Fixed-Rate Bonds Fall.
If you sell before maturity, the price may be below your purchase cost or below face value. A loss can occur even when every scheduled coupon has been paid. A bond ladder or a maturity that coincides with a known cash need can reduce the chance that you must sell during an unfavorable market, but neither approach eliminates credit or liquidity risk.
Write down the earliest date you might need the principal and ask whether you could hold through the stated maturity under realistic circumstances. Do not buy a long-dated bond solely because its yield looks attractive if your cash need is earlier.
5. Read call, redemption, and unusual payment provisions
A callable (redeemable) bond lets the issuer repay you before the stated maturity under specified conditions. Review the SEC’s Callable or Redeemable Bonds explanation and then read the issue’s actual schedule.
Record the complete call schedule
- Earliest call date.
- Call price, including any premium above face value.
- All subsequent call dates and prices.
- Whether the call is optional, extraordinary, or tied to a sinking-fund requirement.
- Any notice period or conditions that must be met before redemption.
Stated maturity is not necessarily your holding period. If the issuer calls the bond when rates are lower, your interest payments can end sooner and you may have to reinvest at a lower rate. Compare yield to call as well as yield to maturity when the quote provides it, and determine which dates and assumptions each yield uses.

6. Check liquidity and plan your exit
Before purchasing, ask how actively the particular issue trades and what bid is currently available. Individual bonds commonly trade through a broker, and price transparency can be limited. A thinly traded issue may be difficult to sell quickly or may require accepting a price that does not reflect an estimated theoretical value.

- What is the current bid, offer, and bid-ask spread?
- How recently did the issue trade, and in what size?
- What mark-up, mark-down, commission, or other transaction cost applies?
- Is the transaction a new issue or a secondary-market purchase?
- Would the broker act as principal or agent, and how is that disclosed?
Include the spread and fees in your return estimate. A bond with a slightly higher quoted yield can be less attractive if selling costs are materially higher or if there may be no ready buyer when you need cash. FINRA’s Bond Investing and Due Diligence guidance lists liquidity, yield, maturity, call status, tax treatment, and credit rating among the characteristics to assess.
7. Determine the tax treatment and after-tax return
Tax treatment depends on the bond and on your tax situation. Municipal-bond interest generally receives federal income-tax exemption, and interest may also be exempt from state or local tax for residents of the issuing state. Do not assume either exemption applies to every municipal bond, every type of income, or every investor. The SEC’s Municipal Bonds overview describes these qualifications.
For a taxable bond, compare after-tax yield using your current assumptions and tax advice rather than simply comparing headline yields. A tax-exempt yield can be more or less valuable depending on your marginal tax rate, state of residence, and account type. Tax rules can change, so verify the treatment for the specific issue.
Watch zero-coupon timing
Taxable zero-coupon bonds can create imputed interest: taxable interest may accrue even though the bond makes no periodic cash payment. That can produce a tax bill before maturity cash arrives. Read the tax sections of the offering documents and plan for the timing of both accruals and cash flows.

8. Review disclosures and the intermediary
For a public-company issuer, review current SEC filings and the bond’s offering documents or indenture when available. Look for debt levels, cash flow, upcoming maturities, material litigation, and disclosures about defaults or missed payments. The SEC’s Research Before You Invest guidance explains why checking primary information matters.
Confirm whether the quote is for a primary offering or a secondary-market trade, when the price is valid, and whether accrued interest is included. Request a written confirmation showing the security identifier, quantity, price, yield, settlement date, and fees. Understand how the broker is compensated and whether the firm is selling from its own inventory.
Check the brokerage firm and the individual investment professional through FINRA’s BrokerCheck. SEC investor-protection resources also provide background on researching firms and professionals at Protect Your Investments. A legitimate intermediary does not make the bond itself safe; it gives you another set of disclosures to verify.

Evaluate the proposed purchase alongside the rest of your holdings. Concentration can arise from owning several bonds of the same issuer, sector, state, maturity range, or bond type. Diversification can reduce concentration exposure, but it cannot eliminate default, interest-rate, call, tax, or liquidity risk.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Issuer exposure: Would one company, government, or project represent too much of your fixed-income assets?
- Sector or geographic exposure: Could the same economic or regional event affect several holdings?
- Maturity exposure: Do many bonds mature or become callable at the same time?
- Liquidity needs: Do you have cash reserves outside the bond that cover likely near-term expenses?
- Risk tolerance: Could you tolerate a price decline or delayed payment without selling in distress?
FINRA’s due-diligence guidance and the SEC’s Investment Products overview both emphasize considering a security’s characteristics in the context of your objectives, time horizon, and risk.

How to compare two individual bonds
Put both issues on the same worksheet and compare the following fields before deciding. A higher yield is not automatically better if it comes with weaker protection, a shorter call date, higher trading costs, or a tax disadvantage.
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Issuer, credit quality, and seniority | Who owes the money, what is the current issue rating, what collateral or guarantee exists, and who is paid first? |
| Price, yield, and cash flows | What will you pay, what coupon and payment dates apply, what is the yield to maturity, and are accrued interest and fees included? |
| Maturity and rate sensitivity | When is principal scheduled, and could you hold through that date if market rates move against you? |
| Call and early-payment terms | When can the issuer redeem, at what price, and what happens to your income if it does? |
| Liquidity and transaction cost | What bid, offer, spread, trading activity, and broker compensation would apply? |
| Tax treatment | Is interest taxable, federally exempt, or potentially exempt in your state, and what is the estimated after-tax yield? |
| Portfolio fit | Would the purchase increase issuer, sector, maturity, or bond-type concentration beyond your plan? |
A practical pre-purchase workflow
- Get the exact identifier and quote. Obtain the security identifier, quantity, clean price or displayed price convention, accrued interest, yield, settlement date, and all fees from the broker.
- Collect the governing documents. Read the prospectus or offering memorandum, indenture, call schedule, and any supplemental terms for the exact issue.
- Confirm the payment map. Write down coupon amount, payment dates, face value, maturity, and any deferral or payment-in-kind feature.
- Analyze credit and priority. Check the current rating and its date, review issuer disclosures, and identify collateral, covenants, guarantees, and seniority.
- Model the exit paths. Compare holding to maturity, selling earlier at a plausible bid, and each callable or sinking-fund redemption date. Include spreads and fees.
- Calculate the tax result. Determine whether interest and any accrued or imputed income are taxable for you, then compare after-tax yield on a consistent basis.
- Check concentration and liquidity. Add the proposed position to your portfolio totals and verify that other cash is available for near-term needs.
- Verify the intermediary. Review the firm and professional in BrokerCheck, understand whether the trade is principal or agency, and retain the written confirmation.
- Set a review trigger. Keep the documents and note what would cause a reassessment, such as a rating change, missed payment, or a change in your cash requirement.
Can you lose money if you hold a bond?
Yes. Holding to maturity can expose you to issuer default, in which case scheduled interest or principal may not be paid in full. Holding does not protect you from a callable redemption that ends income early, nor from taxes that reduce your net return. If you sell before maturity, market rates, a weak bid, or a wide spread can produce proceeds below your purchase cost. These risks exist even when the bond has made every payment so far.
The practical question is not whether a bond has a coupon, but whether its issuer, terms, price, liquidity, tax treatment, and maturity fit your plan after considering those failure paths.
Final pre-trade checklist
- Legal issuer and exact obligation identified.
- Face value, coupon, payment dates, maturity, and settlement details recorded.
- Purchase price, yield to maturity, accrued interest, spread, and fees understood.
- Current rating, rating date, security, seniority, covenants, and default provisions reviewed.
- Call, sinking-fund, extraordinary-redemption, and payment-deferral terms checked.
- Bid availability and a realistic exit route assessed.
- Federal, state, local, and zero-coupon tax consequences considered.
- Issuer disclosures and offering documents read.
- Brokerage firm and professional checked through BrokerCheck.
- Issuer, sector, maturity, and bond-type concentration tested against your portfolio.
FINRA summarizes the core task this way: “Before buying a bond, you should assess the many characteristics that are associated with these fixed-income securities, including maturity, security provisions, yield, call status, tax treatment and credit rating.” Apply that review to the specific issue and current quote in front of you, not to a generic description of the issuer.
