Before buying an AI-focused ETF, verify what the fund means by “AI,” what it actually owns, how concentrated it is, and what you will pay to own and trade it. Read the current summary and statutory prospectuses, shareholder report, holdings file, index methodology (if applicable), and issuer website data. Then compare expense ratios, turnover, bid-ask spreads, premiums or discounts to net asset value (NAV), liquidity, and the fund’s technology, foreign-market, valuation, thematic, and active-management risks.
An AI label does not guarantee broad diversification or pure artificial-intelligence exposure. A fund may emphasize chip manufacturers, data-center infrastructure, cloud platforms, software vendors, robotics, autonomous systems, or companies that merely adopt AI. Treat the ticker as a starting point, not as evidence of what you are buying.

Start with a six-part review: define the exposure, inspect the portfolio, compare every cost, test trading and NAV behavior, read the risk disclosures, and decide whether the fund fits your existing portfolio. Complete those checks using documents dated immediately before your purchase because holdings, fees, assets, index rules, and prospectus language can change.
- Define the mandate. Read the investment objective and the index or portfolio-selection rules. Identify the minimum revenue, business-activity, or issuer-eligibility threshold used to call a company “AI.”
- Measure concentration. Record the largest holding, top-five and top-10 weights, number of holdings, sector mix, country exposure, market-cap mix, and rebalancing schedule.
- Calculate total ownership cost. Capture gross and net expense ratios, any contractual fee waiver, turnover, brokerage commissions, bid-ask spread, and historical premiums or discounts to NAV.
- Check implementation. Review trading volume, median spread, creation and redemption conditions, the liquidity of underlying securities, and how closely market prices have tracked NAV.
- Read the risks. Look for thematic-classification, technology, foreign-market, currency, concentration, valuation, active-management, trading-halt, closure, and delisting disclosures.
- Test portfolio fit. Compare the fund with your time horizon, loss tolerance, current technology exposure, and need for diversification. Past performance describes history; it does not predict future returns.
Investor guidance from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) boils the discipline down to a useful rule: “Do not invest in something that you do not understand.” If a prospectus cannot answer these questions in plain language, pause rather than infer the missing details.

What does an AI-focused ETF actually invest in?
“Artificial intelligence” is not a standardized asset-class definition. One ETF can target the companies supplying computing power while another targets software developers, industrial automation, autonomous machines, or businesses expected to adopt AI. The objective, index methodology, and current holdings—not the marketing name—establish the exposure.
Common AI exposure models
| Exposure model | Typical businesses represented | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| AI infrastructure | Semiconductor designers and manufacturers, networking equipment, data-center hardware, power and cooling suppliers | What percentage of revenue must come from infrastructure, and are suppliers with only indirect exposure eligible? |
| Cloud and computing platforms | Cloud providers, data-storage companies, specialized processors, model-training services | Does the methodology cap large platform companies, or can a few mega-cap stocks dominate? |
| AI software and services | Model developers, enterprise software, cybersecurity, analytics, and automation vendors | Is eligibility based on revenue, patents, text analysis, management statements, or an analyst judgment? |
| AI adopters | Health care, finance, manufacturing, logistics, or other companies using AI in operations | How is actual adoption verified, and how quickly can a company lose eligibility? |
| Robotics and autonomous systems | Industrial robots, sensors, warehouse automation, autonomous vehicles and machines | Does the fund treat robotics as AI, and how does it handle companies whose businesses are mostly unrelated? |
| Mixed thematic basket | A combination of the categories above, sometimes with broad technology holdings | What are the minimum thresholds and the maximum weight for any one category or issuer? |
Index-based funds follow written rules, while actively managed funds allow a portfolio manager to change holdings within the stated objective. Neither approach guarantees a “pure” AI portfolio. SEC guidance recommends checking how an index is constructed and comparing that description with the actual holdings.

What a filed methodology can reveal
SEC-filed materials for two thematic funds using an AI Substrate concept illustrate why the details matter. The materials describe an 80% policy requiring at least that portion of assets to be invested in companies connected to the defined AI substrate. They also describe tests for an issuer’s competitive “edge,” asymmetric return potential, liquidity, market capitalization, and valuation, followed by a modified equal-weight approach. Those rules can produce a portfolio very different from a market-cap-weighted technology index. Treat the example as a methodology to examine, not as a recommendation.
How do I check an AI ETF’s real portfolio and concentration?
Download the most recent holdings file and shareholder report, then calculate how much of the portfolio depends on its largest positions and related industries. A thematic label does not guarantee diversification.
Record these portfolio measures
- Largest position: Note the issuer and percentage of net assets on the file’s as-of date.
- Top-five and top-10 weights: Add the percentages rather than relying on the number of holdings.
- Number of holdings: Include stocks, depositary receipts, cash, and derivatives when the report lists them.
- Sector and industry mix: Identify whether chipmakers, software, hardware, communications, industrials, or another group drives returns.
- Country and currency exposure: Foreign listings can add political, regulatory, currency, settlement, and market-hours risk.
- Market-cap distribution: A fund with many holdings can still be dominated by a handful of mega-cap companies or by volatile small-cap stocks.
- Rebalancing frequency: Monthly, quarterly, or rule-triggered changes affect turnover and how quickly the fund responds to a company’s changing AI exposure.
| Concentration check | What to write down | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Issuer concentration | Largest, top five, and top 10 weights | A few stocks can determine returns and losses. |
| Theme concentration | Share in infrastructure, software, adopters, robotics, or other categories | The fund may behave like one narrow industry despite a broad-sounding name. |
| Geographic concentration | Country percentages and non-home currencies | Regulation, exchange rates, and local market conditions can affect results. |
| Overlap | Companies already held through your other ETFs or funds | Several funds can create one large, hidden position in the same stocks. |
Compare the holdings date with the prospectus date. A report can be accurate when published yet stale after a rebalance, merger, index change, or large market move.

Which fees and trading costs should I compare?
Compare the expense ratio and the costs of buying and selling. A lower stated expense ratio can be outweighed by a wide spread, high turnover, or persistent trading-price premium to NAV.

Fund-level costs
- Gross expense ratio: The fund’s operating expenses before reimbursements or waivers.
- Net expense ratio: The amount currently borne by shareholders after any waiver or reimbursement. Check whether the waiver is contractual, its expiration date, and what happens afterward.
- Turnover: Frequent rebalancing can increase transaction costs and, in a taxable account, may affect realized distributions.
- Brokerage commissions: Your broker may charge commissions or other account-level fees even when the ETF itself has no commission.
Trading costs
- Bid-ask spread: The difference between the best displayed buying and selling prices. Use the median spread over a representative period rather than a single quiet moment.
- Premium or discount to NAV: The market price can sit above or below the value of the underlying portfolio. Review historical ranges and the frequency of large deviations.
- Market impact: A low-volume fund or an order larger than the displayed quotes can move the price before the trade fills.
| Cost item | Where to find it | How to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Gross and net expense ratios | Summary prospectus fee table | Record both, plus waiver terms and end date. |
| Turnover | Shareholder report and prospectus | Compare funds with similar objectives; high turnover can raise implementation costs. |
| Spread and volume | Exchange quote screen and issuer trading data | Use median spread and normal-session volume, not an isolated quote. |
| Premium or discount history | Issuer NAV/trading-price data | Check the range, frequency, and size of deviations. |
| Commissions and account fees | Your brokerage schedule | Include them in the cost of your actual trade. |
Investor.gov notes that even small fee differences can compound over time and points investors to the FINRA Fund Analyzer for cost comparisons. Enter the same investment amount, holding period, and return assumption for each candidate so the comparison is consistent.
Why can an ETF’s market price differ from NAV?
ETF shares trade on an exchange throughout the day, while NAV is generally calculated at a scheduled time. Supply and demand, market closures, volatile underlying securities, and creation or redemption frictions can therefore push the trading price above or below NAV.
Implementation checks
- Review the fund’s historical premium-and-discount table, including periods of market stress.
- Check the median bid-ask spread and typical volume during the hours you plan to trade.
- Confirm how authorized participants create and redeem shares and whether the underlying holdings are easy to transact.
- For funds holding foreign securities, consider that the local market may be closed while the ETF continues trading.
- Use a limit order when you need a defined maximum purchase price or minimum sale price; a market order accepts the next available quote.
Trading halts, exchange interruptions, or a shortage of willing market makers can make an ETF temporarily difficult to price or sell. Prospectuses also describe the possibility of closure or delisting, which can force shareholders to sell or receive liquidation proceeds at an inconvenient time.
What risks are specific to AI and thematic ETFs?
Read the risk section for the fund itself; two ETFs with similar names can disclose different exposures. The main risks generally fall into several groups.

Thematic-definition risk
A company can be incorrectly identified as part of an AI theme, or the theme can develop in an unexpected direction. A rules-based screen may rely on imperfect data, while an active manager’s judgment may change as technology and business models evolve.
Technology and obsolescence risk
Rapid innovation can make a product, architecture, or supplier less competitive. High expectations for AI growth can also produce sharp valuation changes when earnings, regulation, energy costs, or customer adoption differ from forecasts.
Concentration and correlation risk
Companies that appear different may depend on the same cloud customers, chip supply chain, data-center spending cycle, or interest-rate environment. Correlations can rise just when diversification is most needed.
Foreign-market and currency risk
International holdings add exchange-rate movements, different accounting and disclosure standards, political intervention, capital controls, settlement delays, and market holidays. A domestic investor can lose in home-currency terms even if a foreign share rises locally.
Active-management risk
An active manager may select securities or rebalance at the wrong time, fail to achieve the stated objective, or incur higher turnover than an index fund. Read how the manager defines AI exposure and what discretion the mandate permits.

Market-structure, closure, and delisting risk
Premiums and discounts, trading halts, illiquid holdings, and exchange delisting can impair execution. The prospectus for a robotics and AI ETF, for example, explicitly discusses thematic misclassification, unexpected theme development, premium-and-discount risk, trading halts, and delisting. Those disclosures are reminders to read the exact prospectus rather than assume every thematic fund has identical protections.
How should I compare two AI ETFs?
Put the candidates side by side using the same as-of dates. The following framework prevents a low fee or attractive recent return from deciding the comparison by itself.
| Comparison axis | Evidence to collect | Decision question |
|---|---|---|
| Theme definition | Objective, eligibility threshold, revenue test, and exclusions | Does the exposure match what I intend to own? |
| Process | Index-based or active; screening, weighting, and rebalance rules | Can I understand and accept how holdings are selected? |
| Diversification | Holding count, top weights, sectors, countries, currencies, market caps | Will this duplicate or intensify risks elsewhere in my portfolio? |
| Fees | Gross and net expense ratios, waiver, turnover, commissions | What is the recurring fund cost and what could change? |
| Trading quality | Median spread, volume, assets, NAV tracking, premium/discount history | Can I enter or exit at a reasonable price? |
| Rebalancing and continuity | Schedule, index changes, closure and delisting language | How often can exposure and trading characteristics change? |
| Risk language | Thematic, technology, foreign-market, valuation, concentration, and active-management sections | Are the potential losses acceptable for my plan? |
Do not create a category-wide “best” score from incomplete data. If a comparable value is not disclosed, mark it as “not stated” and investigate rather than filling the gap with an estimate.
How do I decide whether an AI ETF fits my portfolio?
Use the fund as a component of a broader allocation, not as a substitute for understanding your overall diversification. Compare its holdings with every other ETF, mutual fund, retirement account, and individual stock you own.
- Time horizon: A narrow technology theme can experience long drawdowns; money needed soon has less time to recover.
- Loss tolerance: Stress-test how you would react to a large decline caused by valuation compression, a failed product cycle, or a broad technology sell-off.
- Existing exposure: Broad-market funds may already own the largest AI beneficiaries. Adding a thematic ETF can overweight the same companies.
- Role in the plan: Decide whether the ETF is a small satellite position, a replacement for another holding, or an attempt to express a specific thesis.
- Evidence standard: Buy only when you can explain the objective, major holdings, costs, and principal risks without relying on the ticker’s name.
Which documents should I read before placing an order?
Use documents from the fund issuer and SEC filings dated as close as possible to your purchase.

Examples of why the primary documents matter
An April 30, 2025 summary prospectus for the Alger AI Enablers & Adopters ETF states a goal of long-term capital appreciation and directs investors to the prospectus, shareholder reports, and other fund information before investing. That language is a reminder to read the fund’s stated objective and disclosures rather than infer them from its name.
The SEC-filed AI Substrate materials mentioned earlier show that a fund can combine a high minimum thematic policy with issuer-quality tests and modified equal weighting. A robotics-and-AI prospectus demonstrates how a fund can spell out misclassification, premium-and-discount, trading-halt, and delisting risks. These examples are useful reading models; they are not endorsements.

- Write your intended exposure in one sentence. For example, specify whether you want chip and data-center suppliers, AI software, adopters, robotics, or a diversified mix.
- Download the latest documents. Save the summary prospectus, statutory prospectus, shareholder report, holdings file, and index methodology before comparing funds.
- Build a one-page data sheet. Record objective, process, holding count, top weights, sectors, countries, currencies, rebalance schedule, gross and net fees, waiver terms, turnover, spread, volume, assets, and premium or discount history.
- Map overlap. Compare the candidate’s top holdings with your existing funds and identify duplicated exposures.
- Read every principal-risk heading. Highlight statements about thematic classification, technology, foreign markets, valuation, concentration, active management, liquidity, trading halts, closure, and delisting.
- Check trading conditions at the intended time. Look at the current quote, spread, volume, and NAV data; do not assume a normal market during volatile or overseas sessions.
- Decide your portfolio role and maximum size. Base the decision on your allocation plan and ability to tolerate losses, not on a recent performance chart.
- Set a review date. Recheck issuer and SEC documents immediately before purchase and whenever the fund announces a methodology, fee, merger, closure, or other material change.
What are red flags, and how can I fix an incomplete review?
- Only a marketing page is available: obtain the current prospectus and holdings file before proceeding.
- The AI definition is vague: identify the eligibility test, data source, and minimum exposure; if they are not stated, treat the exposure as uncertain.
- The top positions dominate: calculate the combined weight and compare it with your existing holdings rather than assuming the number of tickers means diversification.
- The net fee is much lower than the gross fee: read the waiver’s contractual end date and whether the adviser can recoup expenses.
- The spread is wide or volume is thin: use a limit order, reduce order size, and reassess whether the ETF is practical for your account.
- NAV data are difficult to find: locate the issuer’s historical premium-and-discount table and investigate why information is incomplete.
- Risk language mentions closure or delisting: understand the liquidation process and how you would replace the exposure before buying.
- You cannot explain the fund: stop. The unresolved question is itself a reason not to invest yet.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does “AI ETF” mean if the fund owns companies outside the technology sector?
Some methodologies include businesses that use AI in health care, finance, manufacturing, logistics, or other industries. Check the stated eligibility test and the revenue or activity threshold to see whether those holdings are intended adopters rather than infrastructure suppliers.
How can I tell whether a low expense ratio is temporary?
Compare the gross and net expense ratios in the fee table and read the waiver or reimbursement agreement. The document should state whether the reduction is contractual and when it can expire; the net figure may rise afterward.
What happens if an AI ETF is liquidated or delisted?
The fund may stop accepting creations, cease exchange trading, and distribute liquidation proceeds after selling its holdings. Read the prospectus and any issuer notice for the timetable and consider how you would replace the exposure without an emergency trade.
Why might an ETF look liquid while its underlying holdings are not?
Exchange volume reflects trading in the ETF shares, while the portfolio may contain foreign, small-cap, or otherwise difficult-to-trade securities. During stress, authorized participants may face wider costs, which can increase spreads and premiums or discounts even when the ETF itself usually trades actively.
