The Federal Reserve’s household-wealth statistics are not a single live count of every family’s assets. They are two connected products: the triennial Survey of Consumer Finances (SCF), which asks families about assets, debts, income and demographics, and the quarterly Distributional Financial Accounts (DFA), which combine SCF distributional information with the Financial Accounts of the United States. The DFA estimates household wealth from 1989Q3 onward; it is a reconciled, modeled national-accounting series rather than a quarterly census of household portfolios.
That distinction explains both the usefulness and the limits of the numbers. The data show how aggregate wealth and its components are distributed across wealth groups and demographic categories, but some values are self-reported, some are imputed or forecast, and some Financial Accounts categories are residuals that cannot be assigned cleanly to households.

What the Federal Reserve means by household wealth
In these products, household wealth is essentially a balance-sheet concept: the value of assets minus liabilities. Assets can include housing, business equity, financial assets and retirement claims; liabilities include mortgages, consumer credit and other debts. The exact instrument list and labels can change when the Financial Accounts are reclassified or the DFA model is revised, so a category name should always be read with the release documentation for that vintage.
Wealth is different from income. Income measures flows received over a period. Wealth measures the stock of resources available at a point in time, net of debt. The Federal Reserve’s SCF methodology describes wealth information as an indicator of the savings households can draw on if they face unemployment or illness. A family can therefore have high income but modest net worth, or substantial home and business equity but relatively little current income.

What the DFA publishes
The DFA reports the level, composition and share of aggregate U.S. household wealth for five groups:
- the top 0.1 percent;
- the remaining 0.9 percent of the top 1 percent;
- households in the 90th–99th percentiles;
- households in the 50th–90th percentiles; and
- the bottom 50 percent.
It also distributes wealth by income, age, generation, education and race. Those dimensions let users examine questions such as whether changes in housing values affect younger families differently from older families, or how business and financial assets are concentrated across the wealth distribution.
DFA and SCF: two products, different jobs
The SCF supplies detailed household-level information. The DFA supplies a continuous quarterly estimate that is consistent with the Federal Reserve’s national balance sheet. Treating them as interchangeable creates misleading comparisons.
| Feature | Survey of Consumer Finances (SCF) | Distributional Financial Accounts (DFA) |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Collect detailed information on families’ assets, debts, income and demographics. | Allocate aggregate Financial Accounts assets and liabilities across wealth and socioeconomic groups. |
| Frequency | Survey waves are triennial. | Quarterly estimates beginning in 1989Q3. |
| What is observed | Families’ reported answers to item-by-item questions. | Modeled and reconciled estimates built from SCF distributions and Financial Accounts totals. |
| Population detail | Nationally representative cross-section, with a special high-income taxpayer sample. | Five wealth groups plus income, age, generation, education and race categories. |
| Main uncertainty | Sampling error, nonresponse, valuation mistakes, forgotten accounts, sensitive-question nonreporting, multiple imputation and complex survey design. | All of the SCF limitations, plus interpolation, forecasting, allocation assumptions and residual Financial Accounts categories. |
The Federal Reserve summarizes the DFA method this way: “The DFAs use distributional information from the SCF to allocate the Financial Accounts aggregate measures of assets and liabilities to different wealth, income, and other socioeconomic sub-populations.” In practical terms, the DFA starts with totals designed to cover the U.S. economy and uses survey-based distributional information to decide how those totals are split among groups.
How quarterly DFA figures are constructed
A quarterly wealth share is not obtained by asking a new representative sample of families every three months. The construction has three linked stages.

1. Reconcile the concepts
SCF questions and Financial Accounts tables do not use identical definitions, timing conventions or categories. Federal Reserve staff first reconcile those concepts so that a survey item can be compared with the corresponding national-accounting aggregate. This process can require adjustments, exclusions or residual categories rather than a one-to-one match for every instrument.
2. Turn triennial information into a quarterly path
The SCF provides a detailed balance sheet only when a survey wave is conducted. To estimate the intervening quarters, the DFA interpolates between survey observations. After the latest available survey, it forecasts the distribution using model relationships and indicators from the Financial Accounts. A value for a quarter between two surveys is therefore partly estimated; a post-survey value is forecast rather than directly observed in a household interview.

Once the distributions are estimated, the DFA calculates asset and liability shares for each wealth or demographic group and applies those shares to Financial Accounts aggregates. The result is a reconciled quarterly estimate of levels, shares and composition. It is especially useful for tracking broad changes through financial-market and housing cycles, but it should not be described as a direct count of bank accounts, brokerage balances or individual families.
What the SCF contributes—and why its answers are uncertain
The SCF’s strength is detail. Respondents are asked about individual assets, debts, income sources and demographic characteristics instead of being represented only by a single aggregate balance. The survey also uses a special high-income taxpayer sample to improve coverage of wealthy families, whose holdings have an outsized effect on top-percentile estimates.
That design cannot eliminate measurement problems. Respondents may not know a current market value, may forget an account, or may be reluctant to disclose financial information. Closely held businesses, private investments and other concentrated holdings are particularly difficult to value. Nonresponse among very wealthy families can matter disproportionately because a small number of households account for a large share of total wealth.

Imputation in the 2025 SCF
The current SCF documentation identifies the 2025 survey as the most recent wave. Missing values are multiply imputed: 4,367 interviewed families produce 21,835 records across five implicates. Disclosure deletions leave 21,800 public records representing 4,360 families. Analysts must account for those implicates and the SCF’s complex sample design when calculating standard errors; treating the public records as a simple random sample will understate uncertainty.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Multiple imputation means that a missing answer is represented by several plausible completed values rather than one mechanically filled number. Estimates should be combined across the five implicates using the survey’s recommended procedures. The resulting uncertainty reflects both sampling variation and the fact that some household characteristics were not directly observed.
Does net worth include homes, pensions and debt?
Home equity
Housing is represented as an asset and mortgage balances as liabilities, so home equity contributes to net worth after the associated debt is deducted. The treatment is not a promise that every reported property is matched perfectly to a market transaction: survey respondents may estimate values, and the DFA may reconcile housing categories to Financial Accounts totals.
Financial assets and business ownership
Deposits, publicly traded securities, retirement accounts, privately held businesses and other financial claims can appear in the balance sheet, subject to the product’s classification rules. Publicly traded assets have observable market prices, while private businesses and unusual investments depend more heavily on respondent reports, estimation and reconciliation.
Defined-benefit pensions
Future defined-benefit pension payments are not reported by households in a single unambiguous market-value field. Their inclusion and valuation therefore depend on the product and reconciliation method. A headline net-worth figure should not be interpreted as if every pension promise were measured in exactly the same way as a stock or a bank deposit.

Debt
Mortgages and other household liabilities reduce net worth. As with assets, some liabilities are reported directly in the SCF while Financial Accounts totals can be allocated from sector-level aggregates. A group’s wealth share can change because assets moved, debts changed, or both.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the headline wealth number leaves out or handles imperfectly
Assets are not observed through one uniform channel
Some categories originate in self-reported SCF answers. Others come from Financial Accounts totals that may be residual estimates or allocations from broader sector data. Combining them creates a nationally consistent picture, but not a record in which every asset has the same measurement quality.
Comparability adjustments remove or alter difficult categories
Federal Reserve comparison work has removed hedge funds, life insurance and policy loans, selected small categories and certain second homes when aligning SCF and Financial Accounts concepts. If a published table uses an adjusted concept, it may not match a household’s own inventory of everything it considers wealth.
Residual categories can include nonhousehold holdings
Some Financial Accounts residual measures cannot cleanly separate nonprofit organizations from households. A residual assigned to the household sector should therefore not automatically be read as property owned only by families. The category may be the best available reconciliation of national totals rather than a pure observation of household portfolios.

The top tail remains sensitive to method
The high-income oversample improves coverage of wealthy households, but it does not remove nonresponse, valuation difficulty or the statistical influence of a few extremely wealthy families. Estimates for the top 0.1 percent and other top groups can be sensitive to modeling and classification choices. Comparisons across releases should identify the release vintage and any documented methodology changes.

Historical estimates can be revised
New SCF waves, model updates, error corrections and Financial Accounts reclassifications can alter historical levels, distributions or labels. The 2022 SCF was incorporated into the DFA in the 2023Q3 release, and subsequent announcements documented corrections to several asset distributions and other category changes. A time series downloaded today may therefore differ from an earlier article that used a previous release.
Why the Fed’s figures differ from other wealth estimates
Disagreement does not necessarily mean that one source is wrong. Sources may define the population differently, include or exclude pension claims, use market values at different dates, or rely on survey answers versus national-accounting totals. One estimate may report median family net worth from an SCF wave; another may report an aggregate DFA level for all households; a third may use tax records or a research model with different treatment of private businesses and offshore assets.
Before comparing numbers, check four items: the concept of wealth, the population covered, the date or quarter, and whether the value is observed, imputed, interpolated or forecast. Also check whether the source reports a median, a mean, an aggregate total or a percentile share. Those statistics answer different questions even when they use the phrase “household wealth.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAre top-1-percent estimates real time?
No. DFA top-group figures are quarterly estimates, not real-time observations of every top-1-percent household. They use Financial Accounts indicators and modeled distributions between SCF waves, and they forecast beyond the latest survey. Financial-market prices can update aggregate totals quickly, but the distribution of those totals across wealth groups still depends on the model and the latest available survey information.
For a precise citation, state the DFA release and quarter used, rather than presenting a percentile share as timeless. If a later release revises the series, the earlier number remains a description of that older vintage, not necessarily the current estimate for the same quarter.
How to use the data responsibly
- Choose the product. Use the SCF when you need detailed family balance sheets, reported characteristics or survey-based medians. Use the DFA when you need quarterly aggregate levels, shares or distributions consistent with the Financial Accounts.
- Define the measure. Specify whether you mean net worth, an asset category, a liability, an aggregate dollar level, a mean, a median or a percentile share.
- Record the vintage. Note the release date, quarter and SCF wave incorporated. Historical observations can change after revisions.
- Read the notes for categories. Check whether pensions, second homes, insurance, hedge funds or residual categories were adjusted or excluded.
- Carry uncertainty into the conclusion. Use “estimate,” “modeled,” “reconciled” and “reported by families” precisely. Do not describe an interpolated quarter as a direct survey observation.
- Use survey methods for inference. With SCF microdata, combine the five implicates correctly and use the supplied weights and complex-design procedures for standard errors.
Questions the data can answer—and questions it cannot
| Reasonable use | Overinterpretation to avoid |
|---|---|
| Track how aggregate household wealth and its composition changed across quarters. | Claim that every family’s portfolio was measured in that quarter. |
| Compare broad wealth shares across the five DFA groups. | Treat a percentile group as a direct list of identified households or accounts. |
| Study differences by income, age, generation, education or race. | Assume a reported category is free of sampling, nonresponse or valuation error. |
| Use SCF detail to examine family balance sheets and debt. | Treat one imputed SCF record as an observed fact or ignore the complex sample design. |
| Compare releases while documenting revisions. | Assume an older historical download is unchanged after a new SCF wave or accounting reclassification. |
The practical bottom line
Federal Reserve household-wealth data is best read as a layered measurement system. The SCF provides detailed but intermittent, self-reported and multiply imputed family information. The DFA combines that distributional detail with Financial Accounts aggregates to produce quarterly estimates from 1989Q3 onward. Its five wealth groups and demographic breakdowns make concentration and broad trends visible, while interpolation, forecasting, residual categories, pension assumptions and top-tail uncertainty limit the precision of any single figure.
Use the numbers confidently for the question they are designed to answer—how U.S. household wealth is distributed and how that distribution changes over time—but attach the release vintage and methodological qualification whenever the distinction matters.
