The S&P/ASX 200 measures the performance of 200 eligible stocks listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX), selected primarily by float-adjusted market capitalization and screened for relative liquidity. It is not simply a list of the 200 companies with the highest total market values. Eligibility rules, a three-month size calculation, a 50% liquidity threshold, ranking buffers and Index Committee decisions all affect membership. The index is reviewed quarterly, with additional changes possible after major corporate events.

What the ASX 200 measures

S&P Dow Jones Indices defines the S&P/ASX 200 as a benchmark designed to measure the performance of the 200 largest index-eligible stocks listed on the ASX by float-adjusted market capitalization. The index is intended to represent a liquid, investable segment of the Australian share market rather than every listed security.

Because it is capitalization-weighted, constituents do not have equal influence. A company with a larger float-adjusted market value receives a larger index weight, so a price move in a major constituent affects the index more than the same percentage move in a smaller constituent. The ASX 200 therefore tracks the performance of a market segment, not the average return of 200 equally weighted companies.

“Float-adjusted” modifies the market-value calculation to reflect the shares that are treated as available for public investment. The methodology uses an Investable Weight Factor (IWF) for this purpose. Shares that are not considered part of the investable public float do not receive the same influence in the index calculation as freely tradable shares.

The result is a benchmark that combines three ideas: size, investability and liquidity. A security can be large enough to appear near the top of the ASX ranking yet fail to qualify if it does not meet the index’s security or trading requirements.

How a stock becomes eligible

ASX listing and security type

The selection process starts with the eligible ASX-listed universe. The methodology includes ordinary equity stocks and preferred equity stocks. Common and equity preferred stocks must have a Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS) classification and cannot be fixed-income-like hybrids.

Listed investment companies and listed investment trusts that invest in portfolios of securities are excluded. Equity real estate investment trusts (REITs) and mortgage REITs are eligible, so the presence of a property-related business does not by itself prevent inclusion.

Foreign-domiciled companies can qualify for most S&P/ASX indices, including the S&P/ASX 200, provided they satisfy the other requirements. That is one reason the shorthand “Australia’s 200 biggest companies” can be misleading: the relevant test is eligibility for an ASX index, not necessarily Australian incorporation.

Three-month market-capitalization measurement

For indices other than the All Ordinaries, market-cap eligibility is based on daily average market capitalization over the previous three months. The calculation uses ASX price history adjusted for price-affecting corporate actions, the latest available shares on issue and the security’s IWF.

Using a three-month average reduces the chance that a single day’s unusual price or share-count movement determines a company’s position. It also means that a stock’s ranking can differ from a simple snapshot of its market value on the day someone checks an exchange screen.

After the float adjustment is applied, eligible securities are ranked within the S&P/ASX index hierarchy. The ranking determines which securities are candidates for the ASX 200, subject to liquidity and the committee’s review.

Relative liquidity test

Size alone is not enough. For inclusion in the S&P/ASX 200, a stock needs minimum Relative Liquidity of 50%, according to the October 2026 S&P/ASX Australian Indices Methodology.

Relative Liquidity compares a security’s median daily value traded with its average float- and index-weight-adjusted market capitalization over the preceding three months, measured relative to market liquidity. The data includes both on-market and off-market ASX trades.

This test is designed to distinguish a large security that can realistically be traded from one whose apparent size is not matched by sufficient trading activity. A company may therefore rank highly by float-adjusted value but remain outside the ASX 200 if its Relative Liquidity is below the inclusion threshold.

The methodology also provides a continuing-membership safeguard. If an existing member’s Relative Liquidity falls below half of the 50% inclusion threshold—that is, below 25%—the security becomes ineligible and is removed at the next rebalance. A result between 25% and 50% does not automatically produce the same immediate ineligibility outcome; the security remains subject to the broader review rules and committee decisions.

How rankings, buffers and committee decisions work

Rank buffers reduce unnecessary turnover

The index hierarchy uses rank buffers so that a small movement around the 200-stock boundary does not automatically force a replacement every quarter. For the S&P/ASX 200, the published guidelines identify rank 179 or higher for additions and rank 221 or lower for deletions.

These are buffer guidelines, not mechanical triggers. A stock that reaches rank 179 is not guaranteed admission, and a member at rank 221 is not guaranteed removal. The guidelines give the Index Committee a framework for handling borderline cases while limiting avoidable turnover.

Index Committee oversight

The Index Committee retains discretion to bypass the buffers when circumstances warrant. Its review considers a security’s rank, eligibility, liquidity, corporate actions and position within the wider S&P/ASX index hierarchy.

That discretion matters because real markets do not move in neat, isolated steps. Mergers, restructurings, suspensions, sudden changes in trading activity or other events can make a strict rank-only approach impractical. The published thresholds should therefore be read as decision guidelines rather than promises about the next constituent list.

When the ASX 200 changes

Quarterly reviews

The regular review cycle is quarterly. Changes become effective after the market close on the third Friday of March, June, September and December. The October 2026 methodology identifies these four review dates as the standard schedule.

At each review, the provider reassesses the eligible universe, updates the three-month size and liquidity calculations, ranks securities and applies the hierarchy’s buffers and committee judgment. The resulting additions and deletions are then implemented on the stated effective date.

Between-review changes

The methodology also permits changes between scheduled reviews. Examples include acquisitions, mergers, spin-offs, trading suspensions and bankruptcies. These event-driven actions prevent the index from retaining a security that no longer represents an eligible, investable constituent until the next quarterly date.

Because constituents and corporate circumstances change, a historical list of 200 names should not be treated as a permanent definition of the index. The selection framework is more durable than any particular membership list.

What “float-adjusted” means in practice

A company’s total issued shares are not necessarily all available to ordinary market participants. Strategic holdings, controlling interests or other restricted holdings can reduce the portion regarded as public float. The IWF incorporates that distinction into the capitalization calculation.

Suppose two eligible companies have the same total market value, but one has a much smaller proportion of shares available for public investment. The company with the larger investable float can receive the larger float-adjusted market capitalization and, consequently, greater influence in the index. This is why an unadjusted market-cap league table will not always match the ASX 200’s effective ranking.

Float adjustment also supports the index’s investability objective. Weighting by shares that investors can actually trade is intended to make the benchmark more representative of the opportunity set available in the market, rather than of ownership interests that are not freely circulating.

ASX 200 versus the All Ordinaries

The two indexes are often mentioned together, but they answer different market questions. The ASX 200 focuses on a liquid, investable large-cap segment. The All Ordinaries is broader and covers the 500 largest ASX securities.

Comparison S&P/ASX 200 All Ordinaries
Number of securities 200 eligible constituents 500 largest ASX securities
Primary purpose Track a large, liquid and investable segment of the ASX market Provide broader coverage of the largest listed securities
Liquidity screen Yes; inclusion requires minimum Relative Liquidity of 50% No liquidity screen stated in the methodology
Weighting basis Float-adjusted market capitalization The S&P/ASX family’s non-float-adjusted exception
Minimum IWF requirement Applies through the index methodology’s investability rules No minimum IWF requirement

The All Ordinaries is therefore not just a larger version of the ASX 200. Its absence of a liquidity screen and its different weighting treatment can produce different constituents, weights and performance patterns. Calling the ASX 200 “the 200 biggest Australian companies” misses the ASX-listing, float, liquidity and eligibility conditions that separate it from the broader index.

Common questions about ASX 200 selection

Is admission automatic when a company becomes one of the 200 largest?

No. The company must first be an eligible ASX-listed security, satisfy the liquidity requirement and pass the index review. Rank buffers and committee discretion also mean that crossing a numerical boundary does not guarantee an immediate addition.

Can a large company be excluded?

Yes. A security can be excluded because of its security type, lack of the required classification, treatment as a fixed-income-like hybrid, exclusion as a listed investment vehicle, insufficient Relative Liquidity or another eligibility issue. Foreign domicile alone is not an automatic disqualifier for the ASX 200.

Does every member have the same effect on the index?

No. The ASX 200 is capitalization-weighted after float adjustment. Larger investable companies have greater weights, while smaller constituents have less influence on the index’s daily movement.

Why can the index change outside March, June, September or December?

Quarterly reviews are the normal schedule, but the methodology allows event-driven changes for events such as mergers, acquisitions, spin-offs, suspensions and bankruptcies. Waiting for the next quarterly review could leave the benchmark with a security that no longer meets its intended role.

How to interpret the index as an investor or analyst

  • Use it as a benchmark, not a census. It represents a defined, investable segment of ASX-listed equities rather than every listed company or every Australian business.
  • Expect concentration. Float-adjusted capitalization weighting gives the largest constituents more influence than the smaller names.
  • Check the date. Membership, weights and linked investment products can change, while the methodology may be updated in future editions.
  • Separate size from investability. A high total market value does not override the float, liquidity and security-eligibility rules.
  • Read rank thresholds as guidelines. The 179th-addition and 221st-deletion levels help manage turnover but remain subject to Index Committee judgment.

The most accurate one-sentence description is therefore: the ASX 200 is a quarterly reviewed, float-adjusted, capitalization-weighted index of 200 eligible and sufficiently liquid ASX-listed stocks, with membership determined through ranking rules and committee oversight.
