SK hynix makes the memory and storage that let modern computers move and retain data: DRAM, high-bandwidth memory (HBM), NAND flash and solid-state drives (SSDs). In an AI server, those products occupy different layers. HBM sits beside an accelerator to feed it data at very high speed, server DDR5 provides a large working pool for the host system, and NAND-based enterprise SSDs hold datasets, model checkpoints and logs when power is off.
That division explains why the company has become strategically important to AI infrastructure. Its HBM3E shipments, HBM4 development and high-density server DRAM address the immediate bottlenecks around accelerator performance, while its NAND and enterprise SSD products address the amount of data AI clusters must store and retrieve.

What SK hynix makes
SK hynix is a Korean semiconductor supplier whose portfolio is organized around two fundamental memory technologies: DRAM and NAND flash. DRAM is volatile working memory; it loses its contents when power is removed. NAND is non-volatile storage, retaining data without continuous power. Products built from those technologies serve phones, PCs, graphics cards, servers and data centers.
| Product family | What it does | Typical AI-infrastructure position |
|---|---|---|
| HBM3E and HBM4 | Vertically stacked DRAM packaged close to an accelerator | High-bandwidth memory for training and inference GPUs or other accelerators |
| Server DDR5, including RDIMMs | Conventional DRAM modules used by the host processor | Large working memory for the operating system, preprocessing, serving and coordination |
| Graphics and low-power DRAM | Specialized volatile memory for graphics and energy-sensitive devices | Products for systems outside the main high-end server memory pool |
| NAND flash | Non-volatile memory cells that retain data | Building block for client and enterprise SSDs |
| Client and enterprise SSDs | Storage devices combining NAND with a controller and firmware | Local storage for PCs, servers, datasets, checkpoints and logs |
SK hynix also names SOCAMM2, GDDR7, processing-in-memory (PIM), Compute Express Link (CXL) and HBF among its emerging AI-memory or interconnect offerings in its 2026 strategy. Those names describe a roadmap, not a promise that every item is available as a retail product or standardized in every server.

Why memory is a limiting factor in AI servers
Training and serving an AI model involve repeated movement of parameters, activations and input data. An accelerator can perform calculations only as quickly as it receives the next data blocks. If memory is too far away, too narrow or too small, arithmetic units wait idle. System designers therefore build a hierarchy rather than rely on one universal memory type.
HBM keeps the accelerator fed
SK hynix defines HBM as a “high-performance, high-value memory” that vertically stacks multiple DRAM chips to raise capacity and significantly improve data-processing speed. Stacking dies and placing the memory package beside the accelerator shortens the electrical path and provides a much wider interface than ordinary DIMMs. The result is very high bandwidth and low access distance for the tensors an accelerator is actively processing.
That is why Nvidia-style AI GPUs and competing accelerators are designed with HBM attached to the package or to a closely coupled module. The GPU’s compute engines need a continuous stream of model data; sending every request across a motherboard from ordinary server DIMMs would add distance and constrain throughput. HBM is still DRAM, so it is volatile and is not a substitute for a disk or SSD.

HBM is fast and physically close, but a server also needs a much larger pool of general-purpose memory. Server DDR5 registered DIMMs (RDIMMs) hold the operating system, data-loading pipelines, CPU-side preprocessing, model-serving processes and coordination tasks. They can stage data before it is copied into HBM and keep services running when the accelerator is handling another batch.

SK hynix reported development of a 256GB DDR5 RDIMM built with 32Gb dies. The announcement illustrates the capacity trend: as AI servers add more accelerators, they also need denser host-memory modules. DDR5 is not intended to match HBM’s accelerator proximity; its value is scalable capacity and compatibility with the server’s CPU memory subsystem.
NAND and SSDs retain the data between jobs
Datasets, model checkpoints, feature stores, container images and logs are persistent assets. NAND flash stores them without power, and SSDs make that storage addressable at practical latency and throughput for servers. SK hynix highlights Solidigm QLC enterprise SSDs (eSSDs) for AI data-center demand and has reported completion of 321-layer QLC development.
Storage is slower and farther from the accelerator than HBM or DDR5, but it has vastly greater persistence and is economical for the many terabytes or petabytes an AI cluster must ingest. A typical data path is therefore: persistent data on SSDs, staging and preprocessing in host DDR5, and the active working set in HBM.
HBM, server DDR5 and NAND/SSD compared
The following distinctions help when a specification sheet lists several SK hynix components in the same server.
Rank #3
| Attribute | HBM | Server DDR5 RDIMM | NAND flash and SSD |
|---|---|---|---|
| Distance to accelerator | On or immediately beside the accelerator package | On the server memory channels, connected to the host CPU | In storage bays or attached storage systems, away from the compute package |
| Bandwidth and latency | Highest bandwidth and shortest path for accelerator traffic | High general-purpose memory bandwidth with more distance than HBM | Storage-oriented latency and throughput; not a replacement for working memory |
| Power behavior | Volatile DRAM | Volatile DRAM | Non-volatile; data persists without power |
| Capacity pattern | Capacity integrated into an accelerator package or module | Capacity scaled by adding or using denser DIMMs, such as the reported 256GB RDIMM | Capacity scaled across SSDs and storage pools for large datasets |
| Main workload role | Active training and inference data for accelerators | Operating system, preprocessing, serving and coordination | Datasets, checkpoints, logs and retrieval-oriented data |
| Normal buying channel | Accelerator and server OEM supply chains | Server OEMs, distributors and enterprise memory channels | Enterprise procurement for eSSDs; consumer retail for some client SSDs |
SK hynix’s HBM timeline and AI focus
The company’s dated milestones show how quickly accelerator memory has advanced:
| Date | Milestone | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| March 2024 | First HBM3E mass production | Moved the newer HBM generation from development into volume manufacturing |
| September 2024 | First 12-high HBM3E mass production | Demonstrated a taller stack aimed at increasing package-level capacity |
| 2025 | HBM4 development completed and preparation for mass production announced | Positioned the company for the next accelerator-memory generation |
At its 78th Annual General Meeting in 2026, CEO Kwak Noh-jung said HBM revenue had doubled year over year and attributed the result to the company’s market share in AI memory. President Song Hyun Jong described the intended role as more than supplying individual parts: becoming an infrastructure partner that helps customers meet AI-performance requirements.
What the financial results say about the shift
SK hynix’s reported results show how strongly the AI-memory cycle affected its business. For fiscal 2024, the company reported revenue of 66.1930 trillion won and operating profit of 23.4673 trillion won. It also said HBM represented more than 40% of fourth-quarter DRAM revenue, a quarterly mix figure rather than a full-year company average.
For fiscal 2025, SK hynix reported revenue of 97.1467 trillion won and operating profit of 47.2063 trillion won. HBM revenue more than doubled year over year. The figures are company-reported totals in Korean won; they are not a forecast and do not by themselves indicate what the shares will return. They do show why HBM capacity, yields and customer qualification have become central to the company’s economics.

Chief financial officer Kim Woohyun said the increased share of high-value-added products created a foundation for sustainable revenue and profit even during a market correction. For an investor or industry watcher, that statement points to two variables to monitor: the mix of premium products such as HBM and the possibility that memory pricing and customer inventories can still change faster than production plans.
How the three memory layers work together in a server
- Persistent read: Training files or a model checkpoint are read from NAND-based enterprise SSDs or a larger storage system.
- Host staging: CPUs and data pipelines place batches, metadata and preprocessing buffers in server DDR5 RDIMMs.
- Accelerator transfer: The selected working set is moved across the server’s accelerator interconnect into HBM.
- Compute: GPU or other accelerator engines repeatedly access HBM while calculating gradients or serving a response.
- Checkpoint and logging: Results, checkpoints and logs move back through host memory to persistent SSD storage.
Increasing only one layer can leave another bottleneck intact. More HBM does not eliminate the need for host RAM, and a large SSD pool cannot compensate for insufficient accelerator bandwidth during a training step.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you buy an SK hynix product on Amazon?
Yes, at least one directly documented consumer product has used Amazon as a retail channel: the SK hynix Gold S31 SATA SSD. SK hynix’s technology timeline records its launch on Amazon. Because retail listings, capacities, sellers and warranties can change, check the current listing and the drive’s compatibility with your computer before purchasing; the timeline entry does not establish that every capacity is continuously stocked.
What is normally not a retail purchase
HBM packages, HBM-equipped accelerator modules, 256GB-class server RDIMMs and enterprise QLC eSSDs are generally sold through server manufacturers, system integrators and enterprise distributors. They may appear in a configured server rather than as a part a home user installs. Compatibility depends on the accelerator package, motherboard memory support, firmware, electrical standards, endurance requirements and qualification status.

Checks before buying a client SSD
- Confirm whether the computer accepts a 2.5-inch SATA drive and whether a mounting bracket or cable is required.
- Match the advertised capacity and interface to your workload; a SATA SSD is storage, not a replacement for system DRAM.
- Review the seller, warranty terms and return policy on the live listing, since marketplace details can change.
- Keep backups of important files. SSDs reduce mechanical failure points but do not remove the need for backup copies.
What to watch in SK hynix’s next product cycle
The 2026 strategy’s references to HBM4, SOCAMM2, GDDR7, PIM, CXL and HBF indicate an effort to expand from one successful memory product into a broader AI-memory platform. HBM4 addresses accelerator bandwidth and capacity. CXL is an interconnect direction for attaching or sharing memory resources. PIM places selected computation closer to memory. GDDR7 serves high-speed graphics-oriented systems, while SOCAMM2 and HBF are additional form-factor or memory-system initiatives named by the company.
These labels should be treated as development and product-planning signals until a specific part, specification, customer qualification and shipping date are published. For buyers, the practical question is always whether the component is supported by a particular server design; for investors, it is whether new products convert AI demand into repeatable, profitable shipments.
Practical takeaway
SK hynix matters to AI servers because it supplies all three critical memory layers: HBM for the accelerator’s immediate high-speed working set, DDR5 for the host’s larger volatile pool, and NAND-based SSDs for persistent data. Its 2024 HBM3E milestones, 2025 HBM4 preparation and sharply higher FY2025 results show the commercial weight of that role. Consumers may encounter a Gold S31 SATA SSD through Amazon, but the HBM and high-density server products that drive AI infrastructure are primarily enterprise components purchased through OEM and server channels.
