Do not stop a suitable, affordable long-term SIP solely because the market is falling. First check whether your goal, time horizon, cash flow and fund’s risk still fit. A Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) is only a way to contribute a fixed amount at regular intervals; it does not insure your money, prevent losses or guarantee a return. If your circumstances or the scheme have changed, revise the plan deliberately rather than reacting to the latest NAV.
What an SIP does—and what it does not do
AMFI defines an SIP as a mutual-fund contribution method in which you invest a fixed amount at fixed intervals, commonly monthly, instead of investing the whole amount at once. The scheme and its underlying assets determine the investment risk; the SIP label does not make those assets safer.

With a fixed-rupee contribution, a lower unit price buys more units and a higher unit price buys fewer. SEBI describes this arithmetic as rupee-cost averaging. Over time, the average cost per unit may tend to be below the average subscription price. “May tend” matters: averaging does not ensure that your total holding is profitable, that every instalment catches a low, or that a SIP will beat a lump-sum investment in every market.
Investor.gov uses the parallel term dollar-cost averaging for investing equal amounts on a regular schedule regardless of market movements. Its educational point is applicable to the arithmetic, not to Indian tax or regulatory rules: a regular pattern can help manage the risk of making one large timing decision, but it cannot remove investment risk.

Start with the question: has your plan changed, or only the price?
A falling NAV is information about recent market pricing. It is not, by itself, evidence that your goal, income or ability to bear risk has changed. Before changing an instruction, separate market movement from a change in your life.
- Goal: Is the amount and purpose of the goal still the same?
- Time remaining: How long before you need to withdraw the money?
- Cash flow: Can you continue the contribution after essential bills, debt payments and an adequate emergency reserve?
- Risk capacity: Could you tolerate a further fall without being forced to sell?
- Fund suitability: Does the scheme’s objective and portfolio still match the role you assigned it?
If these answers are unchanged and the goal is genuinely long term, a decline alone does not invalidate the schedule. AMFI has explained that disciplined regular investing can help investors avoid stopping in falling markets; Investor.gov likewise cautions against rash decisions and attempts to time the market.
Match risk to when you will need the money
SEBI’s investor education guidance is straightforward: align an investment with both your time horizon and your risk tolerance. Volatile or illiquid investments are especially unsuitable for money needed in the near term. An equity-heavy SIP can fall sharply just when a tuition payment, house deposit or other withdrawal is due; a lower NAV does not create a guaranteed recovery window.
If the goal is many years away
You may have time to remain invested through several market cycles, provided the contribution is affordable and the fund remains appropriate. Continue to review the plan at sensible intervals rather than checking the NAV every day. A long horizon is a condition that can make volatility manageable, not a promise of a particular return.

If the goal is approaching
Focus on the amount that must be available and the date it is required. Review the asset allocation and liquidity of the overall portfolio; do not assume an equity SIP can recover before the withdrawal date. Moving risk down may be appropriate for the goal, but the choice depends on your circumstances, current holdings and applicable scheme terms.
If your tolerance for loss has fallen
A plan that looked comfortable in a rising market may be too aggressive after you experience a drawdown. Reassess the mix of asset classes and the size of the target. This is a suitability decision, not a prediction that the market will continue falling.
Inspect the fund instead of judging only its falling NAV
Use the current scheme documents and portfolio information to determine whether the investment still does the job you selected it for.

- Portfolio and concentration: Look for large exposures to one company, sector, theme, geography or credit segment. Concentration can make a decline materially different from a broad-market fall.
- Risk-o-meter: SEBI’s scale runs from Low, Low to Moderate, Moderate, Moderately High, High and Very High. Treat the label as a current risk description, not a return forecast.
- Costs and terms: Check the expense ratio, any exit load, lock-in or liquidity restriction that applies to your units. These details can vary by scheme and option.
- Diversification: Consider the fund together with your other investments. Two apparently different schemes may own many of the same companies or assets.
A falling NAV can occur in a sound scheme during a broad sell-off, but it can also reveal a mismatch between the fund and your objective. Review the evidence in the scheme’s current documents rather than making a decision from a one-day or one-month chart.

Your choices when the market keeps falling
There is no universal “correct” button. Compare the alternatives against the same facts: goal and time left, affordability, loss tolerance, fund category and exposures, diversification, Risk-o-meter, costs and liquidity terms.
| Choice | When it can fit | What to check first | Main risk of a hasty decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Continue the same SIP | The goal is long term, contributions remain affordable and the scheme is still suitable. | Objective, portfolio, risk label and your ability to stay invested. | Continuing an unsuitable or unaffordable plan simply because it is automated. |
| Change the amount | Cash flow or the target amount has changed. | Essential expenses, emergency savings, debt and revised goal value. | Cutting contributions for a temporary fear reaction and later missing the target. |
| Revise allocation or switch | The fund’s risk, concentration or role no longer matches the plan. | Replacement objective, holdings, costs, exit load, lock-in and tax consequences. | Switching after a fall and locking in losses, or moving into a fund you have not evaluated. |
| Pause contributions | You face a genuine short-term cash-flow problem and need to protect essentials. | How long the pause lasts, missed-goal effect and restart conditions. | Turning a temporary pause into an unplanned market-timing strategy. |
| Redeem units | The goal is due, the investment is unsuitable, or liquidity is genuinely required. | Required amount and date, exit load, taxes and the replacement for the money. | Selling solely to escape a fall, then being unable to fund the goal if prices recover. |
| Add extra money | You have surplus cash, a suitable horizon and a risk level you can tolerate. | Emergency reserve, debt, concentration and whether the fund remains appropriate. | Assuming a lower price proves an asset is undervalued or must rebound. |
“Continue” and “add more” are different decisions. A lower price means a fixed contribution buys more units; it does not establish that the asset is cheap. Extra investment should never require borrowing, missing essential bills or emptying necessary emergency liquidity.
A step-by-step review before you change the instruction
- Write down the goal and withdrawal date. Record the amount you need, the date and how much of the target this SIP is expected to fund.
- Test affordability. Review income, essential spending, high-cost debt and emergency savings. If the instalment is causing financial stress, adjust it rather than sacrificing necessities to preserve an automatic debit.
- Measure time and loss capacity. Ask how a further fall would affect your behaviour and whether you could wait for a recovery. If a forced sale is possible, the current risk may be too high for the goal.
- Read the current scheme information. Check objective, category, holdings, concentration, Risk-o-meter, costs, exit-load rules, lock-in and liquidity.
- Check the whole portfolio. Include other mutual funds, shares, deposits and liabilities. Look for accidental duplication or excessive exposure to one risk.
- Choose the smallest change that fixes the problem. That could be continuing, changing the amount, rebalancing, pausing for a defined reason or redeeming for a defined need. Do not make a switch merely to find the fund with the best recent chart.
- Document the reason and review date. Note what changed, what you decided and when you will reassess. A written rule is less vulnerable to the next alarming headline.
When stopping, pausing or switching is reasonable
Cash-flow stress
If income has fallen or essential costs have risen, protect day-to-day needs and emergency liquidity first. You do not need to prove confidence in the market by continuing an amount you cannot afford. Set a practical restart or review date so a temporary pause does not become an accidental abandonment of the goal.

A near-term liability
If the money is needed soon, review the asset allocation and liquidity now. The relevant question is not whether prices look attractive but whether the required amount will be available on time with an acceptable risk of loss.

A material change in the scheme
A changed objective, unexpected concentration, a risk level that no longer fits, or terms that conflict with your needs can justify a switch or redemption. Compare the replacement on the same criteria and check exit-load and tax implications before executing it.
Personal risk tolerance has changed
It is valid to acknowledge that you cannot stay invested through the expected volatility. Rebuild the plan around a risk level you can actually maintain; do not choose an allocation that looks good on paper but causes panic selling.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you invest extra during a fall?
Only treat an additional lump sum as a separate, optional decision. Confirm that you have a suitable horizon, an emergency reserve and no more urgent use for the cash. Then examine the scheme’s objective, valuation is not established by a falling NAV alone, portfolio concentration and your overall allocation. A lower unit price increases the number of units bought for a fixed amount, but neither SEBI’s SIP explanation nor general dollar-cost-averaging education supports a promise of a rebound or a superior outcome.

What a falling market cannot tell you
- It cannot tell you when the decline will end.
- It cannot prove that your fund is undervalued or that the next instalment will be the low.
- It cannot guarantee that continuing every instalment through every downturn will produce a profit.
- It cannot replace the fund’s current documents or your own goal and cash-flow assessment.
AMFI’s August 2026 SIP information page reported ₹32,297 crore in SIP collections for that month. This is a dated industry-flow figure, not a measure of investor returns and not evidence that any individual should invest or continue.
In an April 2025 monthly note, AMFI chief executive Venkat N. Chalasani wrote: “While geopolitical developments and border tensions may introduce short-term market volatility, investors are encouraged to stay focused on their long-term financial goals.” That is a historical AMFI statement, not a current market forecast.
Questions to ask before acting
Use these questions as a final checklist:
- What exact goal is this SIP funding, and when is the money needed?
- Would I still select this scheme today after reading its objective, holdings, risk label and costs?
- Can I continue the contribution without borrowing or reducing essential liquidity?
- How much of my total portfolio is exposed to the same companies, sector or asset class?
- If I redeem, what will fund the goal instead, and what exit-load or tax terms apply?
- Am I changing the plan because my facts changed, or because I want to predict the next market move?
When to seek individual advice
Personal advice is especially useful when the goal is near, the portfolio is concentrated, several schemes overlap, a large redemption is required, or your capacity for loss is unclear. If you consult someone in India, verify the person’s registration and qualifications with the relevant Indian regulator or professional body. No adviser can reliably call the market bottom; the value of advice is in matching risk, liquidity and implementation to your facts.

A market decline alone is not a sell signal for a suitable, affordable long-term SIP. Keep contributing only when the goal, horizon, cash flow and fund risk still fit; change the amount, allocation or scheme when those facts have changed. Use rupee-cost averaging as an explanation of how units are purchased—not as a guarantee—and make no decision on the assumption that anyone knows when the market will recover.
