Start with the app’s least-permissive privacy choices, then secure the account itself. Turn on phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication (MFA) if available, activate every meaningful security alert, deny optional phone and browser permissions, and disable optional AI training or personalization that uses your data. Keep the device updated and locked, and never put credentials or complete financial identifiers into an AI chat.
Feature names and legal disclosures vary by provider and jurisdiction, so verify each choice in the app’s current settings and privacy notice rather than assuming that an “AI” label means the same data practices everywhere.

Set the account to the most restrictive practical defaults
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Investor Bulletin dated April 23, 2026, states: “Always choose the least amount of data-sharing possible.” Apply that principle to four areas: account access, notifications, permissions, and AI data use. A setting is not protective merely because it exists; it should be enabled only when it improves security or a feature you actually use.
| Area | Recommended setting | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Sign-in | MFA with a passkey or authenticator app; use a compatible FIDO2/WebAuthn security key when offered | Backup codes, recovery contacts, and a process for a lost phone |
| Alerts | Real-time or immediate alerts for access, profile changes, trades, transfers, and linked accounts | That alerts go to a channel you monitor and cannot be silently disabled by a new device |
| Permissions | Deny optional location, contacts, photos, advertising ID, microphone, and similar access | Whether a feature still works without each permission and whether access can be revoked later |
| AI and personalization | Opt out of optional model training, broad personalization, and vendor sharing | Retention period, human review, service providers, deletion controls, and data categories covered |
Turn on strong MFA
Open the app’s Profile, Settings, or Security area and enable two-step verification. Prefer a passkey or an authenticator app over text messages when the provider supports it. A FIDO2/WebAuthn hardware key is a physical second factor that can resist phishing, but compatibility differs by app, device, and jurisdiction.
#1 Best Overall
- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Use a unique passphrase for the investing account. The SEC describes strong passwords as generally 12 or more characters with mixed character types. A password manager can generate and store a different passphrase for every financial service. Save one-time backup codes offline; do not keep the only copy in the same phone that receives authentication prompts.
Review the recovery path immediately after enrollment. Confirm which email addresses and phone numbers can reset access, remove obsolete contacts, and understand whether support will require identity checks. An MFA setting that can be bypassed through an unprotected recovery email is not providing its intended protection.
Enable high-value alerts
In Notifications, Security alerts, or a similar menu, enable alerts for all of the following:

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
- Successful and failed logins, especially from a new device or location
- Password, passkey, MFA, and recovery-setting changes
- Changes to your name, address, email address, phone number, or other profile details
- Every securities transaction, including orders, executions, cancellations, and withdrawals where the app offers them
- Money or securities transfers, beneficiary changes, and requests to add a bank
- Adding, changing, or deleting linked external accounts
Choose push notifications, email, or text according to what you reliably monitor. If the app allows a user to change the destination for security alerts, protect that destination with its own MFA and test an alert before relying on it.
Limit permissions and tracking outside the app
Use only permissions a feature genuinely needs
On your phone, open the operating system’s privacy-permission manager, select the investing app, and review each category. Set location to Never or Ask next time unless a function you use requires it. Deny contacts, photos, microphone, calendar, Bluetooth, and nearby-device access when they are not essential. An investing app normally does not need your address book or photo library to place a trade.
Advertising identifiers, cookies, pixels, device fingerprinting, and cross-device tracking can connect activity across services. In the phone’s privacy or advertising menu, reset or restrict the advertising identifier and turn off personalized ads where available. In your browser, block unnecessary third-party cookies, review site permissions, and clear stored data for an investing site you no longer use. Recheck permissions after app updates because a new feature can request access that was not present at installation.

Do not trade convenience for unnecessary disclosure
Location-based fraud checks, document scanning, voice controls, and contact-based referrals may be useful, but each creates another data stream. Grant access for the shortest period and revoke it after the task. If denying a permission prevents basic account access, ask the provider whether a web sign-in or manual verification route exists instead of granting blanket access.
Control what the AI service can retain or reuse
Read the privacy notice and AI terms together
Look for separate sections headed Privacy, Data use, Generative AI, Personalization, or Service providers. Determine whether the service retains:
- Prompts, chat transcripts, uploaded files, and feedback
- Financial records, holdings, transaction history, risk answers, and account-link data
- Device identifiers, IP addresses, location signals, and click or session data
- Voice recordings, face or voice biometrics, or other identity signals
Then check whether those data are shared with cloud, analytics, advertising, or model vendors; reviewed by people; transferred across borders; or used to train or improve a model. A statement that data are “de-identified” does not tell you the retention period, the re-identification controls, or which vendors receive the original records.

Switch off optional training and broad personalization
If a toggle such as Improve the model, Use my chats to train, or Personalized recommendations is optional, turn it off unless you have a specific reason to participate. Also disable sharing for product research, advertising audiences, and partner offers when those choices are separate. Record the date of an opt-out and look for a deletion or purge request; an opt-out may stop future use without removing data already retained under the provider’s policy.
The Federal Trade Commission’s AI guidance says companies must honor their privacy promises and give clear notice and affirmative express consent before using consumer data for other purposes. That does not mean every app offers a broad opt-out, so the practical safeguard is to minimize what you submit in the first place.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesKeep sensitive material out of prompts
Never paste a password, MFA code, full brokerage or bank account number, Social Security number, tax document, private identity document, or an unredacted statement into an AI assistant. Remove names, addresses, account suffixes, and transaction identifiers before asking a general question. Treat a voice conversation or uploaded screenshot as a record that may be retained under the same terms as typed text.
Best Value
- FIDO2 & Passkey Ready: Business-ready and FIDO2 L1 certified. This key is supported by major management suites and is ideal for both individual and enterprise deployment. Works seamlessly with Gmail, Facebook, GitHub, Dropbox, Coinbase, and more.
- Universal Connectivity (USB-A ): Features a built-in USB-A connector—simply unfold the key and plug it into your compatible PC or laptop for seamless authentication on the go.
- Dedicated Manager App: Use the Thetis Manager App for the initial hardware PIN setup. Setting the PIN on the device first ensures a smooth registration process. Once the PIN is configured, you can begin registering the key across your favorite FIDO2-compatible online services.
- Ultra-Durable & Portable: Featuring a rotating metal cover, this key is water, crush, and tamper-resistant. It fits easily on a keychain and requires no batteries or network connectivity.
- Check FIDO2 compatibility before purchase - Known limitations: ID Austria is not supported (requires FIDO2 Level 2). Windows Hello login only works with Windows Enterprise editions that support Entra ID, and NFC is NOT supported.
Secure the phone, computer, and connection
- Update everything: Install current app, operating-system, browser, and security-software updates. Updates often close vulnerabilities that a privacy toggle cannot fix.
- Lock the device: Use a strong device passcode plus a fingerprint or face unlock, and set a short automatic-lock interval. Enable the manufacturer’s remote-location and remote-wipe functions before a loss occurs.
- Protect the network: Disable automatic connection to Wi-Fi networks. Avoid trading on public or shared computers and on open Wi-Fi; use a trusted cellular connection or a network you control.
- Navigate directly: Open the firm’s app or type its known address yourself. Do not sign in through a link in an unexpected email, text, direct message, or AI-generated message.
- Separate profiles: Use a dedicated browser profile for financial accounts and remove extensions you do not recognize. Extensions and malware can read pages even when the investing app has strong server-side security.
Review an AI investing app before connecting accounts
Do not judge an app solely by its investment features. Ask support for precise answers to the following comparison points, and save the answers with the date and the applicable country or account edition.
| Comparison point | Questions to ask | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Authentication | Are passkeys, authenticator apps, or FIDO2/WebAuthn keys supported? Is SMS the only option? | No stronger factor and no explanation of recovery controls |
| Alert granularity | Can you receive separate alerts for logins, profile edits, trades, transfers, and linked-account changes? | Only a monthly statement or a single all-purpose notification |
| Permission controls | Can location, contacts, photos, advertising ID, and microphone access be denied independently? | One blanket consent for unrelated data categories |
| AI retention and training | Are prompts and financial records retained? Are they used to train or improve models? Can you opt out? | Vague “may use data” language with no retention period |
| Vendor sharing | Which processors receive account-link, device, voice, or biometric data? | No vendor categories or no way to obtain the current list |
| Deletion | Can you delete chats, uploaded documents, and linked-account data separately? What is the schedule? | Deletion applies only to the app profile, not stored AI inputs |
| Device-loss recovery | Can you revoke sessions remotely and restore access without weakening MFA? | Support requires disabling MFA permanently or emailing unverified instructions |
| Human fraud reporting | Is there a direct, staffed channel for unauthorized trades and transfers? | Only an AI chatbot or an unmonitored form for urgent incidents |
Availability of these controls varies by provider and jurisdiction. Verify the current terms before linking a bank, brokerage, retirement plan, or tax account; a control described for one country or account type may not apply to another.
Monitor activity and respond to an incident
Perform routine checks
Read account statements and trade confirmations rather than relying only on alerts. Confirm that holdings, cash balances, beneficiaries, linked institutions, and contact details still match your records. Schedule a monthly review and perform an additional check after a password reset, phone replacement, or app update.

- Use a trusted device to change the investing-account password and revoke unfamiliar sessions. Do not click a link supplied by the suspected attacker.
- Call the firm through the number on a statement or its official website and report unauthorized trades, transfers, or profile changes. Ask for a hold or recall where available.
- Send the report in writing through the firm’s secure message system or a verified email channel. Include dates, transaction IDs, and the time you first noticed the problem.
- Preserve confirmations, screenshots, alerts, chat transcripts, and your communications. Keep originals and note who at the firm received each report.
- Secure connected email and bank accounts, then review credit and identity-protection options if personal identifiers were exposed.
The SEC’s Regulation S-P amendments require covered financial firms to maintain incident-response procedures for unauthorized access to or use of customer information and to provide timely notice in qualifying incidents. Those obligations apply to covered financial institutions, not automatically to every software app, so report through both the app and the underlying regulated firm when they are separate.
Do not treat AI output as an authorization to act
AI-generated investment explanations can be inaccurate, incomplete, or misleading. The SEC, NASAA, and FINRA have warned investors to independently verify urgent requests and to check that a platform is properly registered. Confirm a trade, transfer, tax instruction, or “security alert” through a channel you opened yourself. An AI assistant’s confidence, a familiar logo, or a convincing voice does not authenticate the request.
The FTC has put the principle plainly: “There is no AI exemption from the laws on the books.” Privacy promises, consent requirements, and existing financial-protection rules still apply, but the safest user behavior remains limiting data, using strong authentication, and verifying instructions independently.
Quick Recap
A maintenance schedule that keeps settings effective
- Today: Enable MFA, backup codes, alerts, device lock, remote wipe, and software updates; remove unnecessary permissions.
- Whenever you install or update the app: Recheck permissions, AI-training choices, linked accounts, and privacy notices.
