Set up a screen lock, bank and UPI transaction alerts, low payment limits and a written emergency card before your parent starts using UPI independently. The parent should keep the UPI PIN, one-time passwords (OTPs), card details and passwords private; check the recipient and amount before every payment; and remember that entering a UPI PIN authorizes money leaving the account, never money coming in.
Build a safer UPI setup first
Use the parent’s own SIM in a screen-locked phone. Keep the phone’s operating system and UPI application updated, and install only the official bank or UPI app. An app sent by a caller, text message or social-media contact may be malicious.

Create a UPI PIN known only to the parent. If a trusted caregiver must help, agree on that arrangement explicitly rather than sharing the PIN casually. Bank employees, callers claiming to be support staff, relatives and “verification” agents do not need the PIN, OTP, password or full card details.

Turn on transaction notifications in the bank and UPI app. Where the bank or app allows it, set both a low daily limit and a low per-transaction limit; raise them only when a specific, understood need arises. Alerts give the family an early warning, while limits reduce the amount exposed if a mistake occurs.
#1 Best Overall
Write the bank’s official support number (copied from its website or a statement), the UPI app’s in-app complaint route, two trusted family contacts, 1930 and cybercrime.gov.in on paper beside the phone. Do not rely on a number supplied by an unexpected caller.
India’s UPI design includes device binding, PIN-based two-factor authentication, daily transaction limits and NPCI AI/ML fraud monitoring. These controls help, but they cannot replace checking a request before authorizing it.

Use a spoken check before every payment
Practise the same short routine until it is automatic:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Say who or what is being paid and why.
- Read the recipient name shown after the QR code or UPI ID resolves.
- Read the amount aloud and compare it with the bill or agreed figure.
- Enter the UPI PIN privately only when all three details match.
- Stop and cancel if the name, amount or purpose differs.
NPCI defines the UPI PIN as a four- to six-digit passcode that authorizes bank transactions and says, “Please do not share your UPI-PIN with anyone.” A payment generally cannot be stopped after it has been initiated, so checking before the PIN is entered is the critical control.

Explain the QR-code and “receive money” trap
Scanning a QR code and entering a UPI PIN is for making a payment, not receiving money. A person who says a PIN is needed for a refund, prize, cashback, account verification or incoming transfer is asking the parent to authorize an outgoing transaction.
Reject unexpected collect requests. Do not open unsolicited links, install remote-access or screen-sharing apps, or follow instructions that require disabling security settings. Unknown QR codes, fake cashback pages and urgent messages are common social-engineering routes. When in doubt, end the conversation and independently contact the intended merchant or the bank using a saved official number.

Choose the right level of family help
Independent use
This suits a parent who can reliably read the recipient, amount and purpose and keep the PIN private. Keep limits conservative, leave alerts enabled and review the transaction history together at an agreed interval without asking for the PIN.

A family member can sit with the parent while the parent holds the phone and enters the PIN privately. Agree in advance which payments need a second check, and keep the rule that no helper asks for the PIN over a call or message.

Delegated access
NPCI’s UPI Circle describes a primary user authorizing a secondary user and setting a limit, including a senior citizen who is wary of digital payments as a use case. Treat this as an optional, supervised arrangement: obtain the parent’s clear consent, set a limit, turn on alerts and review the arrangement together. Availability and controls depend on the participating app or bank.

Before authorizing
Close the chat or end the call. Do not make a “test” payment or send money to reverse a supposed error. Verify the recipient through a separate, trusted channel and check the name and amount again.
After a suspicious or unauthorized payment
- Stop responding to the person who contacted you.
- Contact the bank and the UPI app immediately through their official channels and raise a grievance.
- Record the transaction reference, time, amount, phone number, UPI ID and relevant messages or screenshots.
- Call 1930, the national cybercrime helpline, as soon as possible.
- File the incident at cybercrime.gov.in and keep the acknowledgement details.
Fast reporting gives the bank and authorities the best chance to trace or place a hold on funds, although no recovery is guaranteed.
If the phone is lost
Contact the bank and mobile operator promptly. From a safe device, change relevant credentials, ask the bank what account or UPI access must be blocked or reset, and monitor alerts. NPCI notes that the UPI PIN is required to authorize transactions, but still advises contacting the bank after a phone is lost.
Keep a one-page emergency card
- Bank name and its official fraud/support number
- UPI app name and the in-app complaint path
- 1930 and the cybercrime.gov.in address
- Two trusted family contacts
- Instructions: “Never share PIN or OTP. A PIN screen means money is going out. Do not send a test payment.”
Store the card beside the phone, not inside the phone case or a notes app that could be inaccessible during a lockout. The Government of India reported 2,421 Centres for Financial Literacy as of 31 March 2025, which can provide broader financial-awareness support through local programmes.
