Those conditions can leave an order partly filled, unfilled or executed at a worse price than expected.

What “24-hour” stock trading actually means
The label covers several different arrangements. A broker may offer pre-market and after-hours sessions around the regular U.S. session. A venue may provide an overnight session for a limited list of securities. A developing U.S. model discussed by SEC Commissioner Hester M. Peirce in September 2026 describes a market moving toward 23 hours a day, five days a week. None of these descriptions establishes continuous access to every listed stock, every day.

The word “24-hour” is a marketing or shorthand description; the broker’s current disclosure is the operative detail.

The biggest risks of trading stocks overnight
1. Thin liquidity can make an exit difficult
Liquidity is the supply of willing buyers and sellers at competing prices. Extended sessions generally attract less trading interest and may have fewer active market makers. Some stocks may not trade at all for long periods.
With a shallow order book, a small order can consume the available quotes and move the price. A larger order may receive only a partial fill, while an order to sell may sit unfilled when you need cash or want to limit a loss. The risk is not limited to obscure companies; activity can vary by symbol and by night.
2. Wider spreads raise the cost of getting in and out
The bid is the highest displayed buying price and the ask is the lowest displayed selling price. Their difference is the bid-ask spread. Reduced overnight participation commonly widens that gap.
A wide spread creates an immediate trading cost: buying at the ask and selling at the bid can produce a loss even when the quoted midpoint has not moved. It also makes a small apparent price change less meaningful, because the spread may account for much of the difference.

3. Volatility can intensify when news arrives
Limited trading activity can produce larger price swings. Company earnings, regulatory announcements, geopolitical developments or other financial information released outside regular hours can hit a market with few orders available to absorb them.
An overnight jump or drop is therefore not a reliable forecast of the next regular-session price. When more participants return, the stock can continue in the same direction, retrace the move or open at a materially different level. Treat an extended-session price as a price for that moment and venue, not a guaranteed indication of tomorrow’s open.
4. Quotes may be incomplete or inconsistent across venues
Trading systems operating at the same time are not necessarily linked. One venue can display a price that does not reflect another venue’s orders, and a broker may show only the quotes available through its own routing arrangement.

This fragmentation creates two problems. You may pay more than a competing system would have offered, or receive less when selling. A displayed quote can also look authoritative while representing only a small, temporary order. Ask whether your platform provides access to multiple concurrent venues and how it handles prices that cannot be compared directly.

5. Order handling and investor protections can differ
Extended sessions do not always use the same procedures as regular trading. Brokers and venues may limit accepted order types, restrict eligible securities, route orders differently, or use alternative volatility bands and reference prices.
A customer-disclosure exhibit for the 24X National Exchange warns that an extended-hours order may be partially executed or not executed at all. It also describes the possibility that alternative price bands or reference prices will replace certain regular-session volatility mechanisms. Because arrangements can change, read the current terms for your broker and the venue handling the order rather than assuming that regular-session safeguards carry over unchanged.
6. Technology, data and supervision create overnight failure points
A longer session gives trading systems, market-data feeds and compliance teams more hours in which a problem can occur. Commissioner Peirce’s September 17, 2026 remarks raised questions about technology and data-feed reliability, surveillance, supervision and best execution when overnight order books are thin and liquidity is dispersed.

This was a question raised in commissioner remarks, not a finding that every broker is failing or a measured estimate of investor losses. It does show why an overnight service should be evaluated as a distinct operating environment.
Overnight trading versus waiting for regular hours
The safer choice depends on why you want to trade and how important immediate execution is. The relevant differences are structural, not a universal percentage cost that applies to every stock.

Questions to answer before submitting an overnight order
- What session am I entering? Record the precise opening and closing times in your broker’s interface, including holidays and any daily maintenance break.
- Can this specific security trade? Confirm that the ticker is eligible for the session. Eligibility may exclude many stocks, funds or other securities even when the broker advertises overnight access.
- Which order types are accepted? Ask whether limit, stop, stop-limit or other instructions are available and how an instruction behaves when the session closes. Do not assume a regular-session order will be accepted or remain active.
- Where will the order go? Find out which venue or venues receive it, whether the platform displays prices from other concurrent systems, and how routing decisions are made.
- What happens after a partial fill? Determine whether the unfilled balance remains working, is canceled at the session boundary or carries into regular hours. Confirm the same behavior for an order that receives no fill.
- How are volatility controls applied? Read the broker’s explanation of price bands, reference prices, trading halts and any protections that differ from the regular session.
- What will I see if data fail? Check how stale, delayed or unavailable quotes are labeled and how the broker communicates an outage or a rejected order.
Ways to reduce avoidable execution damage
- Use a price you can defend. When the broker permits it, a limit order states the highest price you will pay or the lowest price you will accept. It can still remain unfilled, but it avoids authorizing an unlimited price in a thin market.
- Reduce size when the order book is shallow. A smaller test order can reveal whether meaningful liquidity exists without immediately consuming every displayed quote.
- Inspect the spread before sending. Compare the bid, ask and displayed quantities, and note whether they change rapidly. A wide or unstable spread is a warning that the quoted midpoint may be a poor estimate of executable value.
- Decide whether the trade truly cannot wait. If the objective is to respond to news rather than to meet a cash need or a preplanned allocation, waiting for broader participation may improve price discovery.
- Keep records of session and routing terms. Save the order confirmation and the broker’s overnight disclosure so you know which rules applied if an execution is disputed.
Practical situations and the risk each creates
You want to buy after a late earnings release
The announcement may create urgency while the order book is at its thinnest. A market order can execute across several price levels, and a limit order can remain unfilled while the stock moves. First verify the spread, available size and the broker’s treatment of a partial fill. If the information is important but not time-critical, waiting allows more participants to assess it.

You need to sell quickly overnight
A displayed bid may represent only a small quantity or a single venue. Selling the whole position at once can push the execution price down, while an unfilled order leaves the position exposed. Check whether the platform permits staged orders and what happens at the session boundary before relying on an overnight exit.
The overnight quote differs from the prior close
That difference is not automatically an error. The quote may reflect new information, a different venue, a wider spread or a small trade in a fragmented market. Compare the displayed quantity and venue, and do not infer that the next regular-session open must equal the overnight price.

Recheck disclosures when a platform expands its hours instead of relying on an earlier explanation of how overnight orders work.
How large are the losses likely to be?
There is no single published statistic that quantifies the additional loss caused by 24-hour stock trading across all investors, stocks and venues. The figures often cited for this subject describe schedules—9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time for the regular session and a developing 23-hour, five-day model—not a measured rate or dollar amount of investor harm.
Your exposure depends on the stock’s liquidity, the order size, the spread, the news event, the venue and the broker’s controls. Evaluate those inputs on the specific order rather than applying a universal “overnight penalty.”
A decision rule for investors
Trade outside regular hours only when the benefit of immediate access is worth accepting less certain execution. Proceed after you have verified the session, security eligibility, order behavior, routing and protections, and after the displayed spread and quantity are acceptable for the size you intend to trade. If any of those facts are unclear—or if the order can wait—regular-session trading offers a more established environment for comparing prices and finding counterparties.
