What risks should investors consider before buying TSMC stock?

Before buying Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) stock, assess whether you can tolerate a business exposed to Taiwan-based operating disruptions, geopolitical and trade-policy changes, concentrated semiconductor demand, very high fixed costs, difficult technology execution, currency movements and cyber incidents. TSMC can report strong growth while one of those risks is worsening; its historical performance does not guarantee future returns.

The practical approach is to separate risks you can monitor from risks you cannot control, then decide whether the possible downside fits your time horizon, portfolio concentration and ability to withstand volatility. The following analysis describes company-disclosed risk channels rather than making an individualized buy or sell recommendation.

TSMC’s recent results do not remove the downside risks

TSMC reported consolidated revenue of NT$3,809.05 billion for 2025, up 31.6% from 2024. Its 2025 operating profit margin was 50.8%, compared with 45.7% in 2024, according to the company’s 2025 Annual Report. Those are historical results for a specific period, not a promise that revenue, margins or the share price will continue to rise.

A risk review should therefore ask what could interrupt production, reduce orders, raise costs or prevent the company from converting technology investments into profitable shipments. TSMC’s 2025 Form 20-F and risk-management disclosures identify several overlapping channels:

Risk channel How it can affect an investor
Geopolitics and trade policy Export controls, tariffs, conflicts or regulatory fragmentation can restrict market access, technology, talent or supply chains.
Taiwan location, disasters and utilities Earthquakes, water or electricity shortages and other disruptions can reduce capacity, delay orders and increase costs.
Demand and customer concentration A slowdown in major end markets or a change in a large customer’s sourcing or product plans can reduce foundry demand.
Fixed-cost manufacturing Lower fab utilization can compress margins because facilities and equipment create substantial costs that do not fall quickly with revenue.
Technology and competition Yield, quality or development problems can increase costs, delay products and weaken customer trust while rivals continue investing.
Currency and input costs Exchange-rate movements and higher prices for materials, equipment, wages, electricity or construction can reduce New Taiwan dollar earnings.
Cybersecurity and continuity A serious attack or failure at a critical supplier or service provider could interrupt production or expose sensitive information.

Geopolitical tension and trade-policy changes

TSMC’s risk disclosures describe exposure to geopolitical tension and economic fragmentation. Trade disputes, export controls, tariffs and armed conflicts can disrupt suppliers, logistics and customers. Policy changes can also reduce access to particular markets, restrict the transfer of technology or limit the movement of specialized employees.

These are disclosed risk channels, not a prediction that a particular political event will occur. The financial effect could arise even without a physical interruption in Taiwan. For example, a new rule might prevent a customer from receiving a certain process technology, require a different production location or delay equipment installation. A customer could then alter its product design, sourcing strategy or launch schedule.

Why export controls matter to the business model

Advanced semiconductor manufacturing depends on equipment, software, intellectual property and customer relationships that cross borders. Restrictions affecting any one of those links can increase lead times or costs and may force TSMC or its customers to redesign supply arrangements. A rule aimed at a customer, an equipment supplier or a particular country can still affect TSMC’s orders and operating results.

How to monitor policy risk

  • Read subsequent TSMC filings for changes to language about export controls, tariffs, sanctions, conflicts and market access.
  • Track whether customers revise product road maps, sourcing plans or geographic production requirements after a policy change.
  • Watch for evidence that equipment deliveries, technology transfers or hiring plans are being delayed by regulation.
  • Distinguish a one-time compliance cost from a recurring restriction that changes the addressable market.

Taiwan location, earthquakes and utility reliability

Most of TSMC’s production facilities, and many suppliers and customers, operate in areas that can be exposed to natural disasters. The company also warns about shortages or price increases for electricity and water. A prolonged interruption could reduce manufacturing capacity, delay customer orders, cause the loss of important customers and materially affect operating and financial performance.

Evidence of realized earthquake losses

TSMC’s 2025 Form 20-F reports earthquake losses net of insurance of approximately NT$3 billion in the second quarter of 2024 and NT$5.3 billion in the first quarter of 2025. These figures are recorded losses from specified periods; they are not an estimate of the cost of a future earthquake and should not be treated as an annual average.

Electricity, water and expansion risk

Semiconductor fabs require highly stable power and large volumes of ultra-pure water. Electricity interruptions can affect order fulfillment and manufacturing costs, while higher electricity prices can reduce margins even when output continues. Drought-related water restrictions could affect current operations or the pace of expansion. The risk is not limited to a complete shutdown: reduced utilization, temporary contamination or a slower ramp can make expensive capacity less productive.

Questions for an investor

  • How diversified are production sites for the specific technologies used by the company’s largest customers?
  • What does management say about backup power, water storage, alternate sources and recovery times?
  • After a disruption, are customers accepting delayed shipments, or are they qualifying another foundry?
  • Are insurance recoveries covering only physical damage, or also the lost contribution from production downtime?

Demand cycles, end-market concentration and customer behavior

A vast majority of TSMC’s revenue comes from customers whose products serve high-performance computing, including artificial intelligence, smartphones, the Internet of Things, automotive applications and digital consumer electronics. Demand in these markets can rise at different speeds and can also contract. A slowdown in any large end market can reduce orders for wafer capacity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fast growth in an end market does not make its demand certain. Customers can reduce inventories, postpone a product launch, redesign a chip, consolidate suppliers or respond to regulation. A customer that currently uses TSMC may decide to source a process elsewhere, while a customer that is growing rapidly may still negotiate lower prices or change its product mix.

Customer concentration is more than a percentage

The relevant exposure is not only the share of revenue represented by a named customer. Concentration can also arise when several customers depend on the same smartphone cycle, cloud-investment cycle, automotive program or chip architecture. If those customers cut orders at the same time, the effect can be larger than a single-customer analysis suggests.

What to examine in company updates

  • End-market revenue mix and management commentary on inventory, orders and customer demand.
  • Changes in customer sourcing, product design, consolidation or regulatory requirements.
  • Whether demand is broadening across applications or is increasingly tied to a small number of fast-growing programs.
  • Lead times and order visibility, while recognizing that guidance can change as customers adjust plans.

High fixed costs and fab-utilization sensitivity

Chip fabrication requires substantial investment in cleanrooms, equipment, facilities and process development. Many of those costs are fixed or difficult to reduce quickly. When demand falls and fab utilization declines, the same cost base is spread over fewer wafers, which can materially reduce operating margins.

This creates operating leverage in both directions. High utilization can support strong margins, but a cyclical downturn can produce a faster profit decline than the revenue decline alone would suggest. Price pressure from customers can compound the effect: lower selling prices reduce revenue per wafer while fixed costs remain.

Capacity spending can increase the exposure

Building ahead of demand may be necessary to support customers and maintain technology leadership. It also commits capital before the company knows exactly when demand will arrive. If a process ramp is delayed, a product cycle weakens or a policy change limits the intended market, newly installed capacity may earn less than planned.

Metrics worth following

  • Reported operating margin alongside revenue growth, rather than revenue alone.
  • Management commentary on capacity utilization, wafer pricing and the timing of new-fab ramps.
  • Capital expenditure plans compared with customer commitments and end-market demand.
  • Evidence that lower utilization is being caused by a temporary inventory correction or a more durable loss of demand.

Technology execution, yields and competitive investment

TSMC’s technology leadership depends on repeatedly developing, qualifying and manufacturing new processes at commercially acceptable yields. The company warns that uncertainty in advanced technologies makes expected product quality and yields challenging. A failure can cause lost revenue, additional costs, loss of business or loss of customer trust.

Why yield matters

Yield is the proportion of usable chips produced from a wafer. A process can be technically impressive but economically unattractive if too many chips fail testing or if defect rates force expensive rework. Early production often carries learning costs; if the learning curve is slower than expected, margins and customer launch schedules can suffer.

Competition can change the economics

The foundry market is intensely competitive. Rivals may have different or more advanced technologies, greater financial resources or government subsidies. Even if TSMC remains a preferred supplier, customers can use competing capacity to negotiate price, diversify supply or reduce dependence on one provider.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An investor should evaluate execution rather than assume that current leadership persists. Relevant evidence includes the timing of process qualification, customer adoption, production yields, defect or quality commentary, and the scale and effectiveness of competitors’ investment.

Currency exposure and rising input costs

TSMC says substantially all of its sales are denominated in U.S. dollars, while more than half of its capital expenditures are denominated in currencies other than the New Taiwan dollar, primarily U.S. dollars, euros and Japanese yen. This creates translation and transaction exposure when results are reported in New Taiwan dollars.

Based on 2025 results, the company gives an example that each 1% depreciation of the U.S. dollar against the New Taiwan dollar would reduce operating margin by approximately 0.3 percentage points. That sensitivity is a company-provided illustration tied to 2025 exposure, not a forecast and not a permanent rule for every future period.

How the currency effect can work

If U.S.-dollar sales are converted into stronger New Taiwan dollars, reported revenue and profit can decline in New Taiwan dollar terms. Capital expenditure and other costs in foreign currencies can move in the opposite direction, changing the cost of new capacity. The net effect depends on the timing and currency of receipts, payments, hedges and commitments.

The filing also identifies inflation in materials, equipment, wages, electricity and fab construction as a cost risk. If those increases cannot be recovered through pricing or productivity, operating margins can fall even when wafer demand is healthy.

Cybersecurity, suppliers and business continuity

TSMC says a serious cyberattack could cause data loss, shut down production lines, disclose trade secrets or customer information, and impair commitments and financial results. A cyber incident can therefore be both an operational event and a competitive event if sensitive process or customer data is exposed.

Third-party service providers create another dependency. A failure at a supplier, logistics provider, cloud service or critical-equipment provider can interrupt operations without an incident occurring inside TSMC’s own network. The company’s business-continuity risk management lists disasters, cyberattacks, supply-chain disruption, geopolitical tensions, sabotage, critical-equipment failure and shortages of water, electricity or natural gas.

What makes continuity risk difficult to price

Some incidents are brief and recoverable; others create qualification problems that last much longer. A production line may restart before customers can immediately resume normal shipments if tools require recalibration, wafers must be requalified or a customer has already shifted orders elsewhere. Public disclosures may also lag the operational event.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Monitoring signals

  • Material cybersecurity or data-protection disclosures in filings.
  • Changes in business-continuity plans, supplier dependencies or critical-equipment lead times.
  • Unusual changes in inventory, deferred revenue, delivery timing or customer communication.
  • Whether an incident affects only one site or a shared supplier, network or process technology.

How the risks can reinforce one another

These risks are not independent. A geopolitical restriction can delay equipment, which can slow a technology ramp and leave a customer without expected capacity. An earthquake or utility shortage can reduce utilization just as smartphone demand is weakening, magnifying margin pressure. A currency move can reduce reported margins while construction and equipment costs are rising. A cyberattack at a supplier can delay production during an already constrained launch.

For that reason, an investor should test combinations rather than rely on a single-risk checklist. Ask what happens if demand weakens at the same time that a new fab is ramping, or if a policy change limits the customers for which that capacity was built.

A practical pre-purchase risk review

  1. Define the holding role. Decide whether the shares would be a diversified long-term position or a concentrated bet on semiconductor and artificial-intelligence growth. The same company risk has a different effect at different portfolio weights.
  2. Read the latest filing. Compare the newest Form 20-F and annual-report risk language with the prior year. Look for changes in wording about geopolitics, utilities, customers, technology, currency and cyber incidents.
  3. Map revenue dependencies. Identify the end markets and customer programs driving current growth. Note whether several growth sources depend on the same product cycle or regulatory environment.
  4. Test utilization sensitivity. Review operating margin, capacity additions and management’s comments on utilization. Consider how much profit could be exposed if demand falls before new capacity is absorbed.
  5. Check technology execution. Follow process qualification, yield, quality and customer-adoption updates. Treat a delay or cost overrun as potentially material when a product launch depends on it.
  6. Review policy exposure. Track export controls, tariffs, sanctions and other trade barriers that could affect TSMC, its customers or equipment suppliers.
  7. Translate currency risk. Use the company’s 0.3-percentage-point margin sensitivity as a 2025 reference point, then assess whether your own return expectations can withstand currency-driven volatility.
  8. Set a monitoring plan. Decide in advance which filing changes, margin movements, utilization comments or policy developments would make you reduce, add to or reconsider the position.

Comparing TSMC with another semiconductor investment

If you are choosing between TSMC and another semiconductor company, compare the risk structure rather than simply comparing recent growth. Use the same questions for each candidate:

Comparison axis Questions to ask
Geographic and utility resilience Where are production assets and suppliers located, and how dependent are they on one power or water system?
Customer and end-market concentration Would one customer, product cycle or application account for a large share of demand?
Fab utilization and fixed costs How would a demand decline affect utilization, pricing and operating margin?
Technology execution What evidence supports yield, quality, qualification and customer adoption?
Trade-control and geopolitical exposure Which markets, technologies, suppliers and employees could be affected by policy changes?
Currency and input-cost sensitivity In which currencies are sales, capital spending and operating costs denominated, and how are changes managed?

This framework does not establish that another company is safer. It helps reveal which risks you would be exchanging if you chose a different investment.

What the available evidence cannot tell you

Company filings can describe potential loss channels and historical results, but they do not establish a current fair value for the shares, a suitable entry price, future earnings, tax treatment or whether the investment fits your personal risk tolerance. They also cannot predict the timing or severity of an earthquake, cyberattack, policy decision or demand cycle.

Use the disclosed risks to build scenarios and a monitoring discipline, not to convert a strong 2025 result into an assumed future return. A decision to buy should account for valuation and portfolio fit separately from the company’s operating strengths and vulnerabilities.
