BOXX can be a poor substitute for cash when you need a known amount on a known date. The fund targets the performance of 1–3 month U.S. Treasury bills, but it is an actively managed exchange-traded fund that uses option box spreads. Its share price, net asset value (NAV), tax results and trading costs can differ from a bank balance or a Treasury bill held to maturity.
The fund itself states: “An investment in the Fund is not a bank deposit and is not insured or guaranteed by the FDIC or any government agency.” That warning matters most for emergency reserves, rent or tax money, down payments and any liability where a short-term loss or delayed sale would create a problem.

What BOXX is—and why that is different from cash
The Alpha Architect 1-3 Month Box ETF (ticker BOXX) seeks, before fees and expenses, to match or exceed the price and yield performance of an investment tracking the 1–3 month sector of the U.S. Treasury-bill market. It generally seeks a weighted average maturity below 90 days. However, it does not simply hold a savings balance or a ladder of Treasury bills.

The fund principally uses box spreads made from long and short exchange-listed options, including standard and FLEX options. It may also hold cash, cash equivalents, money-market funds and Treasury bills. The result is exposure designed to resemble short-term bill returns, not a guaranteed cash value.

A bank deposit has a contractual dollar balance, subject to the bank’s terms and applicable deposit insurance. A Treasury bill held until maturity pays its stated redemption amount, assuming the U.S. government meets its obligation. BOXX shares trade on an exchange. You own a security whose price can be above or below NAV and whose underlying positions can be difficult or costly to unwind.
How a box spread generates a return
The four-leg structure
A box spread combines a synthetic long position and an offsetting synthetic short position on the same reference asset and expiration. If all four legs remain intact through expiration, the payoff is determined by the difference between the strikes rather than by the reference asset’s final level. That is why a box can resemble a short-term borrowing or lending instrument.
Fixed at expiration does not mean fixed today
The expiration payoff does not make the position’s interim market value constant. Before expiration, prices can move with interest rates, time remaining, expectations and supply and demand in short-term credit markets. FLEX options may also be less liquid than standard options. Selling a spread before expiration can produce a loss, and closing or changing one leg separately can weaken the hedge against movements in the reference asset.
BOXX can trade spreads before they expire and can use longer or shorter expirations to obtain exposure to implied forward rates. Its return is therefore a portfolio result across many positions and periods, not a yield promised to each shareholder.

Risks that can make BOXX unsuitable for cash
1. Your principal and share price are not guaranteed
BOXX’s cash-like objective does not promise a stable share price or preservation of principal. The prospectus expressly says investors can lose money and that the shares are not deposits or government-guaranteed obligations. A modest decline may not matter for a long-term allocation, but it matters if you must withdraw a specific dollar amount tomorrow.
Even if the underlying box positions are expected to pay a defined amount at expiration, shareholders can lose money by selling shares while those positions are marked below cost, by paying a wide spread, or by selling when the ETF trades at a discount to NAV.
2. A forced sale can occur at an unfavorable price
Cash needs rarely arrive on the fund’s preferred timetable. If you sell before an option spread expires, its market value may be lower because rates, liquidity or expectations have changed. The prospectus says that when market quotations are unavailable, fair-value methods and adviser judgment may have a larger role; the eventual transaction price can be below the assigned value.

FLEX options can add another complication. Their terms are customizable, but they may have fewer willing buyers and sellers than standardized options. In a stressed market, BOXX may have difficulty closing a position at the desired time or price. A calculated NAV is not the same as a guaranteed liquidation value.

3. ETF trading liquidity is separate from the strategy’s objective
You face two liquidity questions: can the fund sell its option positions, and can you sell your BOXX shares near NAV? Shares can trade above or below NAV, incur bid-ask spreads and brokerage charges, or face a trading halt. A limited pool of authorized participants or market makers could contribute to wider discounts or impaired trading.
When underlying holdings are less liquid, the ETF’s market price may reflect that stress. A market order can execute at a materially worse price than the last quoted price. For money needed on a precise date, a limit order and advance planning can reduce execution risk, but neither guarantees a fill.
4. Returns can be low or negative after costs
Low short-term interest rates can leave the strategy with a very low or negative operating return that is insufficient to cover expenses. Interest-rate and liquidity conditions affect both the value of box spreads and the prices available when the fund trades.

5. The tax result is not assured
BOXX is often discussed as tax-efficient, but its prospectus describes important uncertainty. Derivative gains may be treated as ordinary income or short-term capital gains, distributions may be timed differently than expected, and tax character can be reclassified. The fund does not promise that every gain or shareholder distribution will receive a favorable treatment.
The prospectus notes that certain index options, such as SPX options, are currently treated under Internal Revenue Code Section 1256, generally producing a 60% long-term and 40% short-term capital-gain or loss split. That statement does not establish that all of BOXX’s positions or distributions qualify for that treatment. Tax rules and the fund’s implementation can change, so an investor should not budget a tax bill using a universal 60/40 assumption.
For periods ended December 31, 2025, the fund reported a 2.56% one-year return after taxes on distributions and sale, compared with its 4.33% before-tax return. Its after-tax annualized return since inception was 3.74%. Those calculations use historical highest U.S. federal individual marginal rates, exclude state and local taxes, and may not describe your result. They are also not directly relevant in the same way inside a tax-deferred account.
6. Cash creations and redemptions can transmit costs to shareholders
The detailed prospectus says the fund expects a substantial portion of creations, and may make redemptions, for cash rather than in-kind securities. Cash transactions can force the fund to realize gains earlier, increase execution costs, widen spreads or contribute to premiums and discounts. Large shareholder transactions can affect liquidity, NAV and taxable distributions.

These mechanics are especially relevant when a large investor exits during a stressed market. The costs may be reflected in the fund’s trading or tax results even if you did not initiate the transaction. Check the latest prospectus supplement before relying on detailed cash-creation or redemption language.
7. The strategy depends on active management and functioning options markets
BOXX depends on its adviser and sub-adviser to construct, roll and value spreads, and on counterparties willing to transact at competitive prices. The options are cleared through the Options Clearing Corporation, but the prospectus identifies the remote possibility that the clearing organization could fail to meet settlement obligations.
Active management also means the portfolio may not behave exactly like a simple Treasury-bill holding. The fund can select different expirations, trade before maturity and hold supporting assets. Those choices may help pursue the objective, but they introduce implementation risk and make the result less predictable than a deposit balance.

BOXX compared with common cash vehicles
No single alternative is best for every investor. The relevant question is whether the vehicle’s protections, access and tax profile match the money’s job.
| Cash characteristic | BOXX | Bank deposit | Direct Treasury bill | Money-market fund |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Principal protection or insurance | No FDIC or government guarantee; share price can fall. | Eligible deposits may have FDIC insurance within applicable limits and ownership categories. | Obligation of the U.S. Treasury; value is fixed at maturity, while a sale before maturity can have a market price. | Not a bank deposit; stability and protections depend on the fund’s structure and holdings. |
| Access | Requires an exchange sale during trading hours and brokerage processing. | Usually available through the bank’s withdrawal and transfer channels. | Can be held to maturity or sold through a brokerage; timing depends on the account and market. | Redeemed from the fund under its dealing rules, generally at NAV. |
| Market-price risk before planned use | ETF price, NAV and option values can diverge. | Normally no market-price fluctuation for the deposit balance. | Market value can move before maturity. | Usually seeks a stable or low-volatility value, but it is not a guaranteed deposit. |
| Trading and operating costs | Expense ratio, bid-ask spread, brokerage charges and possible premiums or discounts. | Fees depend on the account; trading spread is not normally involved. | Purchase and sale spreads or brokerage costs may apply. | Expense ratio and any applicable transaction or account fees. |
| Tax character | Derivative treatment and distributions are not universally assured; possible ordinary-income or short-term-gain treatment. | Interest is generally taxable as income; account-specific rules apply. | Federal tax treatment and state-tax treatment can differ from ordinary interest, subject to current law. | Depends on the fund’s income, distributions and your jurisdiction. |
| Fit for a known cash date | Weakest when a specific dollar amount must be available regardless of market conditions. | Strong when insurance, access and the account’s limits meet your needs. | Strongest when the maturity date matches the liability and you can hold to maturity. | Potentially suitable for liquidity, but not the same as insured cash. |
A practical test before using BOXX for cash
- Identify the liability. Write down the amount, due date and latest acceptable arrival date. Emergency reserves and near-term bills have less tolerance for market or settlement uncertainty than long-term savings.
- Decide whether a temporary loss is acceptable. If a 1% or 2% decline would force you to borrow, sell another asset or miss a payment, an uninsured ETF is a poor match for that reserve.
- Check the exit route. Confirm your brokerage’s trading hours, order types, settlement process and cash-transfer timing. Do not assume that a quoted NAV equals the price at which you can sell.
- Review the latest documents. Read the current summary prospectus and any supplement for fees, waiver dates, cash creations and redemptions, tax disclosures and changes to the strategy.
- Estimate after-tax, after-cost proceeds. Include the expense ratio, bid-ask spread, commissions if any, possible premium or discount, and the tax character that actually applies to your account.
- Separate reserves by purpose. Keep money needed immediately in a vehicle designed for immediate access. BOXX may be considered only for funds with enough time and flexibility to tolerate a market sale.
Can you sell BOXX whenever you need the money?
You can generally submit an exchange order while the market is open, but that does not guarantee an immediate sale at NAV or at your target price. The ETF may be halted, quoted with a wide spread or trading at a discount. The underlying options may also be difficult for the fund to unwind, which can feed into the price at which shares trade.
If the date is flexible, a limit order and a sale made before the last possible day can reduce—but not eliminate—execution risk. If the date and dollar amount are non-negotiable, the possibility of a below-NAV sale is itself a reason to choose a different cash vehicle.
Bottom line for emergency cash and near-term bills
BOXX is an option-based ETF designed to pursue short-term Treasury-bill-like results, not a deposit account. Its principal, liquidity, tax character and realized return can all differ from what a cash balance would deliver. It is a poor cash substitute whenever insurance, a guaranteed amount, dependable tax treatment or frictionless access matters more than the possibility of modest tax or yield advantages.
