More U.S. households now own mutual funds than two decades ago, so pooled funds have become a common way to invest—especially through workplace retirement plans and IRAs. The practical takeaway is about access, not a universal investment verdict: ownership figures do not show whether a household has enough savings, an appropriate asset allocation, affordable fees, or good investment results.
The figures below describe the United States. They also distinguish mutual funds from the broader category of U.S.-registered investment companies, which includes exchange-traded funds (ETFs), closed-end funds, and unit investment trusts.

How many U.S. households own mutual funds?
The Investment Company Institute (ICI) reported that 72.7 million U.S. households, or 53.9% of all households, owned mutual funds in 2025. That is about 54% of households. In 2005, 50.3 million households owned mutual funds, according to the ICI’s 2026 Investment Company Fact Book.

|---|---|---|---|
| Households owning mutual funds | 50.3 million households | 72.7 million households; 53.9% | Mutual funds specifically |
| Mutual-fund ownership among households in the second, third and fourth income quintiles | 43% | 57% | ICI’s middle-income grouping |
| Households owning any U.S.-registered investment company | Not stated (ICI’s 2026 Fact Book) | 76.0 million households; 56.4% | Mutual funds, ETFs, closed-end funds and unit investment trusts |
The 2005-to-2025 comparison is an official ICI comparison, but it needs a methodological qualification. ICI says its survey methodology changed in ways that affect comparisons with surveys conducted before 2022. The increase is therefore strong evidence that mutual-fund ownership is widespread and higher in the published comparison, but the entire difference should not be treated as a precisely measured year-by-year growth rate caused only by households changing their behavior.

ICI’s 2025 survey also found that 42% of households younger than 35 owned mutual funds, compared with more than half of households aged 35 or older. Many owners ages 35 to 64 held funds through workplace retirement plans. That pattern is consistent with mutual funds being encountered inside an employer plan rather than selected in a standalone brokerage account.
Mutual funds are only one part of the registered-fund market
The broader ICI measure matters because it is easy to confuse the numbers. In 2025, 76.0 million U.S. households, or 56.4%, owned at least one U.S.-registered investment company. Nearly 130 million individuals owned regulated funds. Those totals include mutual funds plus ETFs, closed-end funds and unit investment trusts; they are not a second estimate of mutual-fund-only ownership.
At mid-2025, U.S.-registered investment company assets totaled $41.5 trillion, with households holding about 77%, or $32.2 trillion. Those are assets for the broad registered-fund category, not mutual-fund assets alone. The figures show how important pooled vehicles are to household investing, but they do not reveal the balance in any one household or the mix of stocks, bonds and other assets inside those vehicles.

Why the ownership statistic is different from stock-market participation
A separate SEC series measures household participation in capital markets using the Federal Reserve’s Survey of Consumer Finances. The SEC’s U.S. Households’ Participation in Capital Markets page lists 2022 as the most recent survey reference period. That measure includes direct and indirect holdings and covers a wider concept than ICI’s annual survey of mutual-fund ownership.
Consequently, “the share of households participating in the stock market” cannot be substituted for “the share of households owning mutual funds.” A household may own individual shares, a retirement-plan fund, both, or neither. The surveys use different definitions, samples and questions.
What a mutual fund is and how ownership works
The SEC’s Investor.gov defines a mutual fund as “an SEC-registered open-end investment company that pools money from many investors.” Each investor owns shares representing a proportional interest in the fund’s portfolio and the gains or losses that portfolio produces. The fund’s stated objective and strategy determine what it buys; a stock fund, bond fund and target-date fund can have very different risks.

Pooling changes the mechanics of investing. Instead of selecting every underlying security, an investor buys shares in a professionally managed portfolio (or an index-tracking portfolio) and accepts the fund’s rules, expenses and risks. A fund can make it easier to hold many securities, but diversification inside the fund does not remove the possibility of losing money.
Pricing and redemption
Mutual-fund shares are generally bought from and redeemed to the fund, or through an intermediary, at the next calculated net asset value (NAV). Investor.gov says mutual-fund investors can sell shares back to the fund at the next calculated NAV on any business day, minus any applicable redemption fee. “Next NAV” does not mean a guaranteed price, instant settlement or an absence of charges.
This differs from an ETF, whose shares trade between investors on an exchange during market hours at market prices. Both are registered-fund vehicles, but their trading and pricing arrangements are not interchangeable.

What rising ownership means for an individual investor
Investing is more likely to be available through ordinary accounts
When more than half of U.S. households report mutual-fund ownership, a fund is no longer an unusual investing route. An employee may encounter one as an investment option or default in a workplace retirement plan; an IRA may offer mutual funds alongside other choices. This can lower the practical barrier to owning a broad collection of securities because the fund handles the transactions and portfolio administration.
Access is not the same as suitability
A fund’s popularity says nothing about whether it fits your objective, time horizon, risk tolerance or existing holdings. A stock fund may fall sharply over a short period. A bond fund can lose value when interest rates or credit conditions change. A diversified fund still has market risk, and a narrowly focused fund may be highly concentrated even when it owns many securities.
Fund diversification is not necessarily portfolio diversification
| Question | What to examine | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Is the fund diversified internally? | Number of holdings, sector or issuer weights, geographic exposure and the fund’s stated segment | Many holdings do not prevent concentration in one sector, country, company or type of risk. |
| Is your overall portfolio diversified? | Holdings in every account, including workplace plans, IRAs and taxable accounts | Several funds can own the same large companies or the same asset class. |
| Does the fund match your objective? | Objective, strategy, benchmark, volatility and intended holding period | A fund can be well diversified yet unsuitable for a short-term need or a different risk capacity. |
Count exposures, not just fund tickers. Two funds with different names may overlap substantially, while one broad fund may provide more varied exposure than several specialized funds.

Costs compound through the account value
Investor.gov explains that a fund’s fees and expenses are deducted from NAV, so investors pay them indirectly through the value of their shares. Before buying, compare the total charges shown in the fund materials, including the ongoing expenses and any applicable purchase, redemption, account or distribution-related fees. A lower published fee is not automatically better if the strategy, risks or service are materially different, but charges are a measurable drag that should be understood before investing.
The account changes the surrounding decision
The same fund can sit in a workplace plan, an IRA or a taxable account, each with different investment menus, restrictions, transaction procedures and tax consequences. The ownership statistics establish that retirement channels are common; they do not determine your personal tax result. Check the rules and documents for the specific account instead of assuming that a fund’s treatment is identical everywhere.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to check before investing in a mutual fund
- Identify the account and purpose. Note whether the purchase is in a workplace plan, IRA or taxable account, and whether the money is intended for a near-term expense, long-term retirement or another goal. The account determines which choices and restrictions apply.
- Read the current prospectus. Investor.gov says the prospectus is available free from the SEC and fund websites. Confirm the investment objective, principal strategies, principal risks, fees, share class and purchase or redemption rules.
- Read the latest shareholder report. Use it to review the portfolio, operating information, financial results and management discussion. A fund’s name or past return is not a substitute for its current holdings and strategy.
- Check holdings and concentration. Look at the largest positions, sector and geographic weights, credit quality or duration for bond funds, and any stated limits. Then compare those exposures with every other account you own.
- Compare performance appropriately. Use the fund’s benchmark and periods that match the intended holding horizon. Short-term returns can be dominated by market conditions and do not establish what will happen next.
- Add up the charges. Review ongoing expenses as well as purchase, redemption, account and distribution-related fees that apply to the particular share class or intermediary. Do not compare a fee from one share class with the performance of another.
- Test the risk against your ability to wait. Ask how much loss you could withstand without selling for an essential expense. Diversification can spread company-specific risk, but it cannot guarantee a positive return or prevent a broad market decline.
- Confirm order mechanics. Find out when orders must be submitted, which NAV applies, whether a redemption fee exists and how the intermediary handles settlement. Mutual funds generally transact at the next calculated NAV rather than at an intraday exchange price.
How to compare funds without treating ownership as a recommendation
If you are choosing among actual funds, compare them on the same set of dimensions rather than selecting the one that is most widely held. The relevant axes are:

| Comparison axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Objective and asset class | Does it invest in stocks, bonds, cash instruments or a combination, and what result is it designed to pursue? |
| Holdings and concentration | What securities, sectors, countries, issuers or maturities drive the risk? |
| Risk and volatility | How large have historical declines been, and what risks does the prospectus identify? |
| Total fees | What ongoing expenses and transaction, account or distribution charges apply to your share class and account? |
| Benchmark and performance | Is the benchmark appropriate, and are returns shown for periods relevant to your holding plan? |
| Share class and sales charges | Are there different share classes, minimums or sales loads available through your intermediary? |
| Account location | How does the fund fit the choices, restrictions and tax rules of the account in which you will hold it? |
| Trading and redemption | When is the NAV calculated, and are there redemption limits or fees? |
What the trend cannot tell you
- It does not show whether individual households are saving enough.
- It does not show whether owners selected an allocation appropriate for their goals or risk tolerance.
- It does not establish the returns earned by owners, because balances, purchase dates, withdrawals and fund choices vary.
- It does not reveal whether households are paying low or high fees.
- It does not prove that broader ownership caused a particular market return, asset-price change or corporate-governance outcome.
- It does not predict future market performance.
Those limits are why a population statistic should be used as context, not as a personal instruction to buy or sell a fund. The useful individual response is to examine the fund’s documents, costs, risks, exposures and account setting.
Bottom line for individual investors
Rising mutual-fund ownership means pooled investing has become a mainstream access point for U.S. households, with especially broad use through employer plans and IRAs. It is reasonable to infer that more people can reach diversified portfolios without selecting every security themselves. It is not reasonable to infer that every owner is diversified across their whole portfolio, paying minimal fees, adequately saving or achieving a suitable outcome. Use the ownership trend to understand how common the vehicle is; use the prospectus, shareholder report and your complete account picture to decide whether a particular fund belongs in your plan.
