In most cases, a rise in market or policy rates does not change the rate on a fixed-rate deposit you already opened. The contract normally continues at its agreed rate until maturity. The change matters when you open a new deposit, renew a maturing one, or consider leaving early to pursue a different offer. New rates may be higher, but banks and other institutions do not necessarily pass a broader rate increase through immediately or by the same amount.
The product is called a fixed deposit in many countries. In the United States, the closest equivalent is usually a certificate of deposit (CD). Withdrawal penalties, callable features, taxes and deposit protection depend on the country and the specific contract.

What happens to an existing fixed-rate deposit when rates rise?
A fixed-rate deposit is a time-bound contract. You place money with an institution for a stated term, and the institution promises a stated rate or return calculation for that term. If market rates rise after you open it, the original contract generally remains in force. Your deposit keeps earning the contracted rate until the agreed maturity date, subject to the contract’s rules for early withdrawal, compounding and payment.
This creates two different situations that are easy to confuse:

No single rule determines how quickly or fully deposit rates follow a central-bank or market-rate move. Rates vary by institution, product and maturity. A policy-rate increase can make newer offers more attractive while leaving your current deposit unchanged.
Why your return can lag the market
Institutions set deposit rates commercially rather than applying a universal automatic formula to every fixed product. They may adjust selected terms, delay a change, or offer different rates for different balances and channels. Therefore, do not assume that a one-percentage-point policy move will produce a one-percentage-point increase in every fixed-deposit offer.
When rising rates affect your decisions
Opening a new deposit
If you have cash that is not already locked in, rising rates can improve the offers available for a new deposit. Compare the complete return, not just the large number in an advertisement. Check whether the quoted figure is an annual rate, an annual percentage yield, or another convention; how interest is compounded or paid; and whether the advertised result assumes that you hold the deposit to maturity.

Renewing at maturity
Maturity is usually the point at which you can choose a new rate without breaking the existing contract. Before the maturity date, find out whether the deposit will renew automatically, for which term, and at what rate. An automatic renewal may use the institution’s rate on the renewal date, but the exact process is contract-specific. Arrange instructions in advance if you want the funds paid out, moved to another account or placed into a different term.
Considering early withdrawal
Leaving a fixed deposit before maturity can make sense only after a calculation. You may lose some interest, pay a penalty, or have interest recalculated under a different rate. Compare the amount you would actually receive from closing early with the net return from a replacement deposit. A higher advertised rate on the replacement does not automatically compensate for the interest forfeited on the old one.
How term length changes the trade-off
Term length determines both how long your money is committed and how often you can respond to new rates. A longer term can secure a known return for more years, but it also reduces your opportunity to reinvest if rates rise again. A shorter term gives you an earlier maturity and another chance to choose a rate, although its quoted rate may be lower or may change by the time it matures.

Consumer Financial Protection Bureau guidance on US CDs notes that a later maturity may offer a higher rate while requiring you to leave the money in the CD longer. Treat that as a product trade-off, not a prediction that longer terms will always outperform shorter ones.
Recommended Free Tools
| Choice | Potential advantage | Main cost or risk |
|---|---|---|
| Shorter fixed term | Earlier access to maturity and more frequent opportunities to reset the rate | The rate may be lower, and future offers may fall before the next renewal |
| Longer fixed term | Locks in a known return for a longer period | Less flexibility if rates rise or you need the money |
| Variable-rate deposit or CD | Return may increase under the product’s adjustment rules | Return can also decrease, and the adjustment formula may be difficult to compare |
| Callable CD (US example) | May advertise a higher rate than a comparable non-callable CD | The issuer can end the agreement early, leaving you to reinvest at a potentially lower rate |
Fixed, variable and floating-rate products are not the same
Fixed-rate products
The rate is set for the agreed term. A later rise in market rates normally affects what you can obtain on a new deposit, not the rate already written into your contract.
Variable-rate products
A variable-rate CD or deposit can change according to the issuer’s stated rules. CFPB guidance says earnings on a variable-rate CD may increase or decrease. Read how and when the institution can change the rate, whether there is a cap or floor, and whether the product can be closed without a penalty.

Floating-rate term deposits in India
India’s Reserve Bank of India (RBI) rules provide for floating-rate domestic term deposits linked to a directly observable, transparent and market-determined external benchmark. That is a distinct product from a conventional fixed-rate term deposit. The benchmark, reset method and disclosure determine how the return responds; do not apply this Indian framework to deposits in other countries.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What early withdrawal can do to your realized return
The rate printed on a certificate is not necessarily the return you receive if you close early. The institution may recalculate interest for the period the money was held, deduct a stated penalty, or impose both consequences according to the contract and local rules.

India-specific rule
For domestic term deposits in India, RBI directions state that interest on a prematurely withdrawn deposit is based on the rate applicable to the amount and the period it actually remained with the bank, rather than automatically preserving the original contracted rate. Any penalty component must be disclosed when the deposit is accepted. RBI FAQs also require banks to disclose and follow their board-approved premature-withdrawal policy.

That rule is jurisdiction-specific. In another country, the contract may use a different penalty method, prohibit withdrawal except in specified circumstances, or apply a materially different interest calculation.
A practical break-even calculation
- Write down the balance you would receive if you close the old deposit today, including lost interest and any penalty.
- Calculate the return available on the replacement product for the remaining time horizon, using its actual compounding and payment terms.
- Subtract any fees, tax effects that apply in your jurisdiction, or periods when the money would sit uninvested.
- Compare the net replacement amount with the amount you would receive by keeping the original deposit to maturity.
- Proceed only if the improvement is meaningful enough to justify the loss of certainty, access restrictions and reinvestment risk.
How to compare two fixed-deposit offers
Use the same assumptions for each offer and record the details in writing. A comparison based only on the headline rate can hide a shorter term, a different compounding convention or a severe withdrawal restriction.
| Comparison point | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Rate and calculation | What rate is quoted? Is it fixed, variable or benchmark-linked? How often is interest compounded or paid? Does the advertised yield assume holding to maturity? |
| Term and maturity | What is the exact start and maturity date? When can you next choose a new rate? |
| Access | Can you withdraw early? Is partial withdrawal allowed? What rate and penalty apply if you do? |
| Call risk | Can the institution end the product before the stated maturity? If so, how and when are proceeds returned? |
| Renewal | Does it renew automatically? Which rate and term apply at renewal, and how can you change the instruction? |
| Eligibility and protection | Are there balance, residency or account requirements? Which local deposit-protection scheme applies, and what limits or exclusions govern it? |
| Tax treatment | Is interest taxable, withheld at source or reported differently for your tax residence? Confirm with the institution or a qualified tax adviser. |
What the US rate figures do—and do not—show
The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation’s national-rate table revised March 16, 2026, reports a national average of 1.52% for 12-month CDs and 1.49% for 24-month CDs. These are dated US national averages, not live offers for a particular customer and not evidence of how fast CD rates respond to a policy-rate change. A bank’s offer can be above or below those averages, and the figures do not establish a causal pass-through percentage.
US readers should also distinguish a standard CD from a callable CD. CFPB guidance warns that a callable CD may advertise a higher rate, but the issuer can terminate it early. If that happens when market rates are lower, you may have to reinvest the proceeds at a less attractive rate.
Quick Recap
A decision process for rising-rate periods
- Identify the contract. Confirm whether your current product is genuinely fixed for the full term or includes variable, step-up or callable provisions.
- Mark the maturity date. Note any notice period and the institution’s automatic-renewal instructions.
- Collect comparable offers. Use the same balance, term and return convention when comparing products.
- Check liquidity rules. Obtain the exact early-withdrawal calculation rather than relying on a general statement such as “a penalty may apply.”
- Choose a term that matches your cash need. Keep emergency funds and near-term spending outside a product that could restrict access.
- Recheck at maturity. Rates, product terms and your own cash needs may all have changed; do not let an automatic renewal make the decision for you.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Expecting an automatic repricing: A fixed contract normally does not reset merely because a central bank raises rates. Read the contract.
- Chasing the highest number: A higher rate can come with a longer lock-in, call risk, limited access or a different payment convention.
- Breaking the deposit without a calculation: Compare the actual lost interest and penalty with the replacement return.
- Confusing national averages with offers: The FDIC figures are US averages for a specific month, not a promise from any institution.
- Applying one country’s rules everywhere: RBI premature-withdrawal and floating-rate provisions apply to specified Indian deposits; US CD rules and other countries’ arrangements differ.
- Ignoring renewal instructions: An automatic rollover can commit your money to a new term before you have compared alternatives.
Questions to verify with the institution
- Is the rate fixed for the entire term, and what event could change it?
- What amount will be paid at maturity under the stated compounding or payment schedule?
- What exactly happens if I withdraw early, including the rate used and every penalty?
- Can the institution call or terminate the deposit before maturity?
- Will the deposit renew automatically, and how do I cancel or change that instruction?
- Which local tax reporting and deposit-protection rules apply to my account?
